can't get it above 540, will run 3dmark and then fail during the arctic test scene.
-
Well thats sums it up, the i7 takes alot of power away from the envys PSU compared to the i5. That leads to less stability/increased Vdroop on the 5830 cores power circuit.

hmm, well I really don't get any subtantial performance increase increasing the core anyway, memory is where its at. i did what sleey0 posted about, and put mini ram heatsinks on the gpu memory. probably not even necessary. temperature isn't the issue.
-
What heatsinks did you use for the GPU memory?
-
Well if you can pull off 575/1200 and you have an i7 then i guess my theory is JuNk.. haha
its all just luck of the draw like desktop video cards... some are "higher binned" parts as they say. Just a better peice of silicon.
Congrats on having one of the best ones. -
My desktop 4830 runs at 575/900, and it only has 640 SPUs as opposed to 800. If it wasn't for that damn 128bit bus, this thing would actually be faster than my desktop!
-
I actually run mine at about half the default clocks to save power and reduce fan noise when just browisng hte web. Something like 47/90 instead of the default 100/200.
But ya, it is stable at 600 through multiple vantage/furmark runs. It has actually never crashed on me, I just stop going higher when I start seeing artifacts. -

I don't think it is Vdroop. I've got an i5-540m and all i can get is <520mhz on the GPU.
-
Don't sweat the 256-bit thing since those chipsets will drain your battery in no time. While the 4830/5830 uses only 24W.
-
What version of GPU tool are you guys using to overclock? I downloaded 0.9.8 and it said it didn't recognize any hardware when I tried to run it.
I'll try to find a more up to date version.

There's a slightly older version that's been updated to work with the 5xxx series. -

I only hope I get those kinds of overclocks... what kind of heat output is it? Any major differences?
-
69C max for GPU. 65C for CPU.
-
I am pretty sure people with 820QM can get 11K.
-
Sorry to ask but did you tweak up your system mem wise or anything? Since you don't sig your system specs was curious. I guess I'm gonna have to dig up Mark06, have a registraition somewhere but I just figured it was rather date compared to Vantage so hadn't given it a try.
-
No real difference in heat. Video card fan will run at full blast, but it stays below about 70. These cards can easily handle a hundred, so it is totally fine.
-
I just did a clean install and overclocked the GPU. That is it. It is in high performance mode of course. See the attachment for my vantage run with lower OC.
-
ALLLLLL depends on if they get a good 5830. CPU influence wont make up for half of that.
-
-
Looks like i've got a good one and a really bad one. My other machine won't OC woth a damn, memeory even crashes above 900 at standard core speeds??
When do you fire up the new memory and blow the numbers out of proportion? -
Haha, my GPU is never gonna go higher than 550. Im ok with that, as all of our top benchmarks are within 1% of each others.
The new system ram didnt/wouldnt affect the 3dmark score in any neglible way either.
Im glad that these 5830s posted 5%+ better 3d performance than the 4830s we all had. Im so happy with this refresh!
Just got my new 5Ghz Simultaneous Dual-Band Linksys Router connected up and am enjoying being connected at 300mbps all around my house... -
My score is still better than yous.
You have a faster CPU and RAM. Try turning all of the services off besides driver and OS stuff. Also make sure that there are no external gadgets connected. Turn aero off and then try again. You should be able to squeeze another 200 points. -
Have you tried Memory speed of 1200 at 600+ core speed? Can you run 3d Vantage on that? I haven't broken 575/1200 yet
-
Baaaah, don't get me wrong as I'm glad to see ppl getting some performance but to go thru all off that just to get a tiny bit higher score seems overkill for me. Beside, I know in my case at least, I don't usually shut everything down before I play a game so a score with all the background stuff running seems more valuable. That said I sure hope my replacement has a good GPU. hehe
-
Well I can get up 633 +- core but memory seems to max out around 1133, It gets really finicky at these speeds, either totally stable or crashes 1st 10 seconds.
Just got a 6200+ 3Dmark vantage and running a PC mark Vantage now. Will post those shortly then I'm done with the benchmarks for now, very happy with performance i'm getting
@ alitunay;
Thanks for the tips. But I'm in the same school of thought as 'bratboy', Don't want to mess with all the extra settings which really won't apply to real world use. I was just having some fun seeing what this machine is capable of, and I must say I'm very impressed! -
A few seperate Benchmarks:
Wifi transfers over the intel 6200N is sustained at 13.4MBps downstream and 12.8MBps upstream over 5GHz N. Tested using 3GB files, dividing that by the actual time elapsed. The windows7 ETA was very accurate btw.
USB 3.0 sustained transfers: 205MBps from a Intel X25-m G2 80GB in a SIIG Superspeed Enclosure. Tested using same process as above.
Wish i had something faster to try and test USB3s 5Gbps claims...
-please note the size of the B or b in my wording as bits and bytes. thank you- -
Here are my final (for now
) benchmarks for my Envy 15 i5-540M. I am very happy with the results and pronounce this machine a keeper

EDIT: Clock for 1 & 2 625 / 1125 for #3 625 / 1110, All using 8.681 driver.
EDIT 2: For reference my default 3Dmark06 (No O.C. or Tweaks) was 8050
Note; I found that turning off B/T, WiFi and CCC power play helped and I used 3D performance settings -1 (1 notch from highest setting on slider) and turned the catalyst AI slider to 'Advanced' which seemed to help stabalize performance. In all these runs my GPU never got above 69C. -
Could you update the post with what clocks you used as well as which graphic drivers? Thanks
-
Well I sent them some numbers and a link to this thread, seems like a rather generic response page on thier site. Hopefully they will update the rankings for the 5830.
-
They responed to me, and said they will take submissions of stock clocked scores. said itll be a couple days.
-
Too bad we don't have any benchers with 820qm. We could see the best potential of these machines. As a note, we are not trying to show how nice these computers are, we are trying to show what is the max potential on these machines.
-
I have one and did post some preliminary ones earlier in the thread. Waiting now for my new build to show up before I re-download install new mem and tweak it.
-
I think you would be hard pressed to find anything faster than the Intel SSDs for benching the USB 3.0. The only 1 I could think of is the WD VelociRaptor drive. Crucial announced they will be coming out with a SATA III SSD drive using a proprietary firmware.
-
my 820qm 3dmark06 score isn't much higher than the i5-520m. vantage score is definitely higher though.
-
Done................
-
Pc vantage or 3D vantage ? what were the scores?
My pc vantage gets skewed do to the dual SSD's so it is not a realistic score to compare to with HDD's. -
The new USB3 Thumbdrives push 300MBps, but are a lil expensive for me to get one to test.
If i had a brand new intel 160 ssd it would push 250, so that would be a lil bit of a bump to test.
What im looking at getting is some enclosures i saw while at CES from icydock. They do raid with 2 2.5" sata drives and push it through usb3. Wont be out for a few months tho.
I have tons of WD 300GB Velociraptors hangin out. They are great at access time, but maximum sequential throughput wont even hit 140MBps. The new 600GB Velociraptor is on the horizon too, but it still wont come close to even 200MBps.
Some 256GB/512GB Sandforce based SSDs will push 300MBps+ and when they drop a little bit i will grab one for my primary ENVY external storage i guess.
Thank goodness for uncle sam paying for all these habits... -
Tweaktown has a review of the Crucial SSD and its a doozy http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/3118/crucial_realssd_c300_256gb_sata_6gbps_solid_state_disk/index.html with a 350MB/s Seq Read speed.
Super Talent is coming out with a RAID thumbdrive but it'll be expensive. Thermaltake is also coming out with a USB 3.0 RAID docking station. -
as long as i can play mass effect 2 at highest settings, and 1080p, with AA at max, and get 30+ frames the whole time, i'm happy (memory oc'ed to 520/1080)
-
should i get 1x4GB stick of transcend memory (have 6GB, upgrade later to 8GB), or 2x2GB of Kingston Hyper?
-
2x2
There is no way you will ever want to have 4x4GB of RAM. It is just plain excessive. Even 4GB is more than anybody really needs, and 8GB is twice that already. 16 is just crazy unless you have a specific app in mind. -
Speak for yourself! MOAR POWER! Seriously though... running a 64bit OS, if you're doing serious gaming and such 6-8GB is not a horrible idea. I mean, just my media center needs 4 to keep files properly cached so it doesn't lag, and all it does is play movies.
-
for the ssd raid benches, i was getting around 370mb/s for the sequential... i wonder why the gap?
-
