3DMark Vantage @ Stock
CPU: Core i5 520M

It is not significant. Vantage runs at 1280x1024. Real games run at 1920x1080. CPU is totally meaningless. The 2.4ghz i5 is faster than most C2Ds, and those had no problem keeping cards far faster than the 5830 filled up.

Here is what I got with 520m. Clocks are on the file name.

I would love the core i5 but we have no option for it in the UK
I have a choice of old i7 for £1200 or new i7 with 5830 for £1350 ($2100)
We dont get the chance to configure like in the USI really want the SSD option too. I hate being in the UK at times!

Will hidevolution import for you?
-
hmm never heard of them. I will go and look into it.
Thanks -
Anyone would know why my windows score for graphics is 4.3 ?
I think it was 6.8 with the 4830 GPU. This is a clean win install with HP ATI driver installed. -
You may need to install CCC too.
-
yes, the HP installer installed CCC. See attached screens.
-
Speaking about that mine shows 5.9 for GPU scores and I did a clean install too. My computer performs as goo as anybody elses in gaming so I don;t really worry about wei score. Do you have issues running any benches?
-
The notebookcheck.net web site has mobile gfx chip rankings and it seems both the Radeon Mobility 4830 and 5830 are ranked a bit low considering the Vantage scores here beats out the nVidia GT 160m. The 5830 should beat out even the nVidia GTS 360m with a slight overclock.

Here are the WEI, GPU/devmng/3D06 defaults:

Will follow with 3d vantage from other machine (did not load vantage on this one)Attached Files:

Running a fresh default run of vantage now. didn't label the scores I saved well enough to know which was a true default run.
Question; whenyou run 3Dvantage at default 1280 x 1024 settings does it always display the tests in full screen 1920x1080 ?? i even tried changing res in CCC to 1280 but the test still displayed full screen?? -
Deafault 3Dmark vantage with WEI (note difference in memory score??) and dev mng scree shot:
here is best vantage run with OC of 566 / 1133: View attachment 44357
This is also the same machine and OC setting I used to hit 10K in 3Dmark06, screen link in signature. -
-
I'm telling ya, the 5830 oc'd came just shy of my 280 run with my M15x.
This thing is very fast for a lightweight, very slim system.
Top notch copper heatsinks on the inside too. Except for the naked GDDR3, but that will be fixed this week -
Does anyone have the USB 3.0 drivers for the new envy? I reinstalled windows, and I didn't save them or it's not working properly =/.
-
Is running at these clocks safe for the system in the long run? Couldn't this decrease the overall life of the laptop? Would it be ok if I only overclocked when playing games?
Also, can you guys perform wi-fi benchmarks, several users have complained about terrible wireless connectivity. -
I'm getting about 7900 in 3dmark 06 on a HP default Windows install. I'll see what I can do with the 2.4ghz i5 on a fresh install soon.

How do I install the strags driver?
-
Just got a pretty good score on 3Dmark05, I forgot to look at the OC numbers before I reset clocks, I think 550/1100

6 CELL BATTERY TEST RESULTS:
2 hrs 52 min.
Power Saver plan (std), WiFi and bluetooth on, screen at 50%.
Usage: full time web surfing in IE8 with minimumof 5 tabs open (up to 10), Included 30 min of streaming std def music videos in windows media player with 75% speaker volume, downloading 84MB file from strags.com and unziping and installing driver file, watching 5 min. of youtube HD video full screen (quality excellent no lag from throttling).
I opted to go with a spare 6 cell battery after having the slice on my first i7 Envy. I did not like the extra 2.7 lbs of wieght, and it did not feel like a 'portable' device anymore.
The other thing I tested was how the computer would shut down. I set power plan to hibernate at the lowest critical battery level and turned off low battery warnings (actions). It worked better than expected, screen dimmed to balck and power light went off after 20 sec. I then swapped out batteries, turned back on and it went right to a 'continue to resume windows' prompt and then opened up right where I left off on the same web page and all tabs intact and online
Conclusions; For light duty use it looks like I'll easily be able to get 5.5 hrs with just 1 extra 6 cell battery that wieghs only .8 lbs. The computer will maintain its thin and light form factor and the extra battery is very easy to stow in my bag. Add a third 6 cell and your looking at over 8 hrs of real world use and will still be packing around over a pound less wieght than with the slice battery.
The only negative I really see is remembering to charge both batteries when back at a power source.
Will be following up with performance tests on battery while doing extensive photo editing in photoshop CS4 -

Is there any reason why hybrid sleep isn't enabled by default in the HP power saving plan? I want to turn it on, but I'm wondering if they left it off because of compatibility issues.
For those that don't know, Hybrid Sleep is a new windows 7 feature that combines the quickness of putting the computer to sleep and waking it up with the back up capability of hibernate. -

What I'm worried about is the memory. Im running it at 1100, which is outside the specifications, but it seems to handle it just fine.
I have overclocked every computer I have had over the past 8 years or so and I've never had a problem. Just don't be stupid, and don't overdo it.
Personally, I can't wait to undervolt my CPU. -

Note: when you first see the 'list of drivers' note the number of 5830 drivers already there (usally 2 or 3) so you'll know when the new one is added. One of my machines showed the new driver as 5800 and the other called it the 5830 (the same as the others) both were the 8.681 version though...
Catalyat 9.12 does not work on notebooks for now, the envy comes with 9.11 so its already up to date. -
Ouch, Notebookcheck charts posted a default 5830 bench for 3Dmark06 as 7410... that just isnt right! haha.

3Dmark06 Default run on new 8.681 driver:
This is on a i5-540M, 4GB 1066, Dual SSD, Factory OS with all bloatware as shipped. Upgraded ATI driver from 8.67.0.5.1 to 8.681. Ran on std high performance power plan and high performance CCC 3D settings with catalyst A.I. disabled.
Looks like I gained 10 points on driver change, now I'll see if it is more stable when OC'd. original driver would not OC even close to my other machine. -

If not, then its just the differences in each and every gpu, some oc better than the other at stock voltage.
I still have a gut feeling that there is much less vdroop inside the Envy power supply unit when using an i5 vs an i7 because of the 15+ watt savings. this leads to more headroom for the gpu core. Mine is stuck at 549..., at 550 its a crapshoot, at 551 itll lockup within a few mins of stress. -
-
New drivers don't seem to have done anything for overclocking. My absolute max right now is 605/1111, but I will run at 600/1100 for when I'm actually gaming.
Still, I will download 3DMark06 to see if I can get over 10k. -
-
i can't seem to get my core up as high after swapping the i5 for the i7-820, so maybe its a power issue as you suggested. that, and my notebook gets a lot hotter. still trying to decide if its worth it to keep the i7. or maybe to get a 620 like Sleey0.
-
-
600 on the core stable? hmm, that's with an i5 cpu correct? i did use diamond 7 compound on the gpu while swapping out the cpu. also going to add heatsinks for the gpu memory. but overheating doesn't seem to be an issue with the gpu. voltage is the thing. its funny that i'm overclocking the envy, but when i play games i never use the overclock, i just like measuring its performance for some reason.
