NBK4267893 works, but only on Envy 14 and it must be configured as $1399 or over. Won't work on 17.

so you're hard core like me then? :p I feel nuts not buying this...but then I would not be happy in the end, so I know that its the right decision.... The Envy 17 3D SB edition has my name on it! The only concern I have....I want a fat coupon on this and not have to spend too much money..

no not that hard core. I am not too much in to that 3D stuff, may be fall for it in another 25 years when I am 50 lol. I am all for envy 17 with 1080p and 6850. Very true, I have made impulse buys to save a 100 or 200 bucks, and I hate regretting my purchase and then end up having to sell it.

    totally true !!!
I went for it head 1st, I dont think SB will be such a big step forward. Moreover, don't expect a fat coupon on them for at least 6 months after release (which is still unknown).
The best bang for your buck is now I think, unless they come up with -600 or more coupons. Anybody has experience with previous years promos before next gen releases ?

As for big gaming laptops, anything bigger than 15" seems silly to me. I am better off having a killer desktop that is twice more powerful than similarly priced laptops and have the Envy 14 on the side to get a good gaming while on the go.

I like this configuration, but I would suggest:

    (1) Switch to the 4GB (1 DIMM) option. This will allow you to upgrade to 8GB later with the purchase of a single stick. With the 6GB option, you'd need to replace both sticks to upgrade to 8GB.

    (2) Consider the 256GB SSD. I know it'll add to the price, but the performance is honestly worth it, and tiny external drives are so commonplace and cheap these days that you don't really need an insane amount of storage internally.

Both changes would raise the price to $1,394.99. Just a thought.

the 6gb RAM is actually 4+2, so you only need to replace the 2gb to upgrade to 8gb. And what can you do with 8gb of RAM? RAMdisks come in handy...a lot faster than any SSD you'll find

4+2 disables dual channel memory I think , unless I am wrong ?
I think both sticks need to be of the same type to have dual channel memory.

Having over 4 gigs of RAM helps save a bit of battery life as it wont have to drive swap as much.

The upgrade from 4GB (1 DIMM) to 6GB costs $55 with HP.

    A 4GB stick from Crucial costs $49.

Your call, but I'll take 8GB for less money.

Edit: didn't think about 6GB being 4+2 (brain fart there!), but I stand by my recommendation.

Does anyone know if the lid is silver or bronze? Seems different in some of the photos. The Hp stock photos looks silver while some user photos show it as bronze. I know its a small thing but If I am going to be using this every day , looks are important :)

You've both got it nailed. It's almost never a good idea to buy the latest thing within 6 mos of its release: it's going to be overpriced and, knowing HP (bless their accommodating little hearts), they will have problems engineering the SB cpus into the refresh and there will be a whole new set of Envy 14 problems. And no one will be getting Core i5 SB cpus with GPUs about equivalent to the 5650 with Radiance displays for $900, not even close! The prices will go up and the $500 coupons will be gone for the new models for months, and there may or may not be any more Radiance displays. Act now, or weep.

Sandy Bridge chips are actually cheaper than the older cores for Intel to produce and the prices are the same.

Look how cheap the dv's are with Sandy Bridge... and the %500 coupon works with them too. For me the only decsion is to get the dv quad or wait till the Envy refresh.

Envy is HP's high end laptop line, there is no way they will wait more than a month or two to refresh with SB.

3D does nothing for me, I'd rather have a touchscreen.

Ok, enough is enough! If I don't get out of the house and get some air to clear my head I might actually buy this thing (Envy 14) LOL.... I woke up this morning and went to YouTube to see people unboxing the Envy 14, reviews...just to see the "size" of it and if it was too small for me to live with it..... It seemed to play Battlefield BC2, Starcraft nicely..... but it ultimately came down to the fact that is has no 1080p display, no bluray, and of course no 3D.... so....

I know as mentioned, I could connect it to an external display, get an external bluray...etc...but it will still not be portable that way... so NO. I'm going biking to stop this insanity! :p Please HP, just get on with it and bring out the SB edition of the Envy 17 3D.

As an aside, I really am happy the radiance screen came back with the $500 coupon... many of you guys are in heaven and that's cool. :D All you peepz that have been wanting this, enjoy it!

    Are you being serious?

I know its never really a good idea to buy it, after my experience with buying the Samsung Galaxy S first day it released. Had it since August, and its broken twice already, i haven't had the phone in over 2 months. stupid repairs.

My plan was not to buy a brand new laptop, but apparently SB is worth the wait. Does HP actually screw up that badly on their engineering? Should i just go off and buy the old Envy 17 3d?

Reason i am waiting mainly is because cooling is suppose to be better. If the old systems cooling was good i probably wouldn't wait.

You won't be able to cancel it, but you will have to do a return, which is easy enough. HP will email you a link to Fedex, print the label, stick it on box, and drop it to Fedex. Anyway, enjoy the laptop, I am a bit jealous that you will get it soon...and I don't have a laptop in site yet

Excellent points. By the time I can get an ENVY 14 with a 6570 and Sandy Bridge and Radiance for $950, I will have have already enjoyed my envy 14 ordered today for a year. Of course, this assumes we will get a new envy 14.

Help me decide, i5-460, 480, or 560 or 580? Im leaning towards the 480, I don't know how much of a tangible performance advantage the 560 and 580 have as they are both clock at 2.66.

How hard is it to upgrade the ram on this laptop?

Ram upgrades are very easy, you get access when you take off the battery. The performance upgrade between the 3 i5's is minimal. I opted for the 580 just because it put me right at 1400.00 which is what you need to use the $500.00 off coupon. but if I were buying it w/o the coupon I would've went 560.

SSD won't give you more than 30 min of battery life, getting the i5 over i7 will pretty much double your battery life when using integrated graphics
