This article may be of interest to some of you. I'm not a bit Tom's fan but this article is pretty good.

In my opinion, with only 4GB of RAM installed, there does not seem to be an overwhelming reason to move to Vista64. The net RAM you would gain (around 250MB) just does not seem worth loosing the compatibility of hardware and software.
If you are using > 4GB in your computer then the move to V64 makes more sense to me.
I can forsee me going to 8GB soon as the prices are getting lower every day and I do use virtualization heavily so V64 may be the way to go in the long run.
When my 8510p shows up today I'll test it with both versions.

For what it's worth:
My laptop shipped with the Feb. 2008(F.0F) BIOS and I installed 4GB of RAM and Vista64 Business. All 4GB are recognized in task manager. I have flashed to the June 2008 (F.13) BIOS and all 4GB are still recognized.

I had the same problem on my 8510w notebook. Only 3GB RAM ( 3070 MB exactly) in vista x64 were accessible. Finally I found the cause. In my case it was the drive encryption software (Safeboot) used in my company. After uninstalling Safeboot whole 4030MB of ram are accessible. I think that HP drive encryption software provided by HP is based on safeboot. So probably the cause is the same and uninstalling drive encryption could help.
