Crap - I got my MacBook Pro 2 weeks ago, just because I though 8510p will be in September.
I guess I can make my gf very happy and give her MBP and order 8510p for myself![]()
Unbelievable...
-
I forgot if it's 14 days or 30 days, but if its 30 days for you to try out the system, then you could return the MBP.
-
Meh, it's 14 days with a 10% restocking fee for open items.
-
Just enjoy the MBP...its a really great machine.
-
MBP is nice machine, but - it is not a LAPTOP - it is a desktop (just because it runs so HOT that you can not have it on your lap - and have to have it on a desk)
Also not all drivers for Vista are available (not bad for x32, but bad for x64). And I use it solely on Windows (osx is useless for me - do not bother trying arguing)
Also I prefer built-in fingerprint reader and 1680x1050 screen on HP. -
So did anyone receive theirs yet?

Except that if it's at Sam's Club there's little doubt you'll get the best price available... I was reading an online article the other day about ways to save money and one thing they suggested was buying a Sam's Club membership if you're thinking about a major purchase... said the savings on ONE major purchase over what you'd pay at regular retail would pay for MANY YEARS' membership.
I have some PROBLEMS with Sam's Club, too, but WHEN they something I want, there's no need to go price shopping -- UNLESS someone else has a REALLY GOOD SALE going you'll never beat a Sam's price on big items... The issue MIGHT BE, however, that the particular t61 they stock might not be configured like you want it, but it's worth at least taking a look, I think.
Jeff -
Great news! The 8510p is now customizable! Finally I can get what I want and add 4 GB RAM and a shiny 7k200.
Edit: Ok, saw the price... that's depressing. -
yea, definately better off getting a pre-configured model. If you want to upgrade any part of it later, it would probably be economically wise to just order the parts (RAM/HD) and install them yourself.
-
good old HP
Looks like the base model is still the best (and only) deal :\ -
Yeah it does suck to see the price increase on the customizable. Nice to see that the ATI is gddr3 though. I do have a question...what are the video card options mean? Specifically, what is the different between ddr2 1d price + 350...and ddr2 2d price +130??? It states its gddr3, and i the options it says ddr2? Is that contradictory or no? And again, what is the difference between 1d, and 2d, and why is 1d so much more? Also..which version of this comes in the base model?
-
Also..what is with the centrino pro option? What in the world is that...I thought we already get a centrino pro.
-
Centrino Pro = 802.11n capability, as far as I know.
-
That makes sense...thanks teraforce. What about the video card options...what is with the 2 options with 1d, and 2d?
-
It actually tells you what centrino pro is....Intel® Centrino® Pro10 processor technology helps reduce the total cost of operating and managing your PCs with built-in remote manageability and proactive security. N capability is in a different option box.
-
The 1d and 2d options means one dimm or just one 2 gb RAM stick, while 2 dimm means the 2 gb RAM is split with 2 1 gb RAM sticks.
-
oh okay thanks. didnt realize they were talking about the ram.
-
I configured an almost identical speced out machine as the MBP, with 2.4ghz and its actually more expensive (with MBP student discount). Just going into the customizing option increases the price by ~300 bucks without even adding anything...pretty sad.
-
Yeah because they force you to get an HD and RAM upgrade which costs 200 right there.
-
i don't get why hp makes it more expensive to customize the notebook...
-
Because the laptop is no longer a stock configuration that HP can just put on an automated line...
-
Ugh, I ordered it and also bought 4 gb of patriot ram and a 7k200 to go with it. Thankfully I won't have to buy another laptop anytime soon.
-
Is there no WEB CAM on HP 8510p ?
-
No, probably because it's a business model. Lenovo, however, does offer the option. The reason why most business models don't have a built-in webcam is because many business do not allow them.
-
H.P should given us an option whether to have it or not.
-
Customized shipping date is also way far off. But GDDR3 confirmation is all I was waiting for I think...maybe time to pull the trigger :O
-
I was messing around with a NW8440 today, because I am considering a 8510p and thought it will be similar in built. Everything seemed pretty great, but when I went to open the screen upward it felt a bit loose. It definitely could have been stiffer. Even when the screen was in its upward position if i shook the laptop the screen would wobble slightly due to how loose it was. Can anybody confirm this in other HP models, like the 8510w? It could have been because the laptop had been abused (was at a verizon store) but I am not sure.
-
The customized shipping date seems about right to me, 2 weeks. About the screen wobble, most of the laptops I've seen will wobble if you shake them hard enough. Then again, I've never really used a business model so I don't know if they're much stiffer. Also if the laptop was there for the public, then, yeah, it probably was abused. While HP should give us the option to put in a camera I don't consider it a deal breaker. I usually like to have more options as well.
-
Anyway, I've had the nc8430 for about a year. As stated in the review I wanted a tech to tighten it up a little bit...they did and it was definitely a little better. It hasn't been a problem for me ever, but yes the laptop will wobble if you shake the base. Almost all do.
I also worked with the 8510w and the amount of 'wobble' was about the same as the nc8430. I think they use the same screens across the generations as well, so it should be nearly identical in quality.
However, over time my screen is still as steady as it was before...the wobble has not gotten worse. -
Hey greg...i know you worked with many of the HPs. How do you feel about the max brightness level..specifically on the 8510 and nc..do you feel it is acceptable? I ask this because it has been a complaint for other business notebooks such as the lenovo. Any information on this would be great. I guess the wobble isnt bad on it, it just felt way to easy moving the lcd panel...I felt like I needed more resistance.
-
The new 8000 series HP business notebooks are finally available on the HP canada site. But they won't let you buy yet...and "find a reseller near you" doesn't seem to work at all. Prices are higher too (more so than they should be with the current exchange rate) :\
-
If there isn't a review up when I get my laptop I'll write one. Okay I really just wanted to know where you AV is from Ackeron. I think I've seen it somewhere, but I can't place it.
-
Well, I'm the bearer of bad news, so don't kill the messenger. I placed an order for the 8510p model RM269UT in the morning of 8/6 and it was supposed to ship 8/11. I called HP yesterday for a tracking number since they didn't email me one yet, only to find out that this lovely computer has been placed on back order. They "think" it will ship out on the 20th, but my faith with HP is slipping.
I called them several times over this summer for the release date of this computer, since the "Coming Soon" banner was raised. First it was the first of June, then end of June, mid-July, end of August, then finally someone got it right and said the 6th of August. The only reason I need a notebook so soon is I'll be going to grad school in about a week and need one by then since the college I went to provided us with computers. However, the t61p is starting to look nice, too, if it didn't take 2-3 weeks to customize and ship. -
-
-
The MBP is looking like a better and better alternative with all these delays with lenovo and HP.
-
Damn that delay does suck. I was waiting for 100% confirmation on the GDDR3 and maybe some benchmarks, but considering I really can't use the t61p's WUXGA...I don't seem to have too many other options
Jin, the picture is Alice by Ken Wong ( http://www.kenart.net/) -
I ordered a T61 on 8/6 and of course was immediately told it would not ship for at least 30 days. So I ordered the 8510p from hp because their ship date was 8/11. I spoke with a rep on the phone to place the order and he assured me they were in stock. LIAR! I've heard various ship dates from various reps since then: 8/13, 8/16, 8/23. Total garbage!
Then, ironically, I get an email from Lenovo yesterday and my T61 shows up today, exactly one week and one day from ordering.
The rub is that I can't open the Lenovo without having to pay the 15% restocking fee, so hopefully the 8510p will show up soon so I can test it out before opening the T61. -
-
Supposedly my laptop is shipping in three days business... supposedly
-
-
-
Again I somewhat doubt they'll actually ship it in 3 business days. I ordered it on Mon or Tues. It was a custom order as well which makes me doubt the 3 day thing even more. If I somehow get it before anyone, I'll at least post some benchmarks the day I get it since so many people want them. I figure I'll just do the typical free ones, 3dmark06, 3dmark05, hdtune, pcmark05, and superpi. Do you guys want those numbers with or without the upgrades I'm putting in? I'm going to put in a 7k200 and 4 gb RAM, though only 3 will register since I'm installing XP pro (hate vista). If there are any other free benchmark programs that you want to see just post them. Again make sure they're FREE.
-
Mmm...well I don't want to inconvenience you too much, but it would be interesting to see the difference between stock scores and what you get after the upgrades. Maybe just the ram? I don't know if you want/have time to install several benchmark programs twice
Personally I'm most interested in the GPU. Ram type, clock speeds, a benchmark or two, maybe some game test results if you have time, etc. -
Yeah, don't have any games yet. All I play is Starcraft right now.
-
Oh, and pictures of the screen! I would love to see how the brightness and the viewing angles are, because Chaz (i think) was a bit disappointed with the brightness and the viewing-angles of the 8510w.
Btw: which screen did you order? 1280x800 or 1680 x 1050? -
I just had an idea, lungboy: Since you ordered both a T61 and an 8510p, perhaps it would be neat to do a head-to-head comparison-type review here on NBR. Then again, if you do decide to return the T61, there is that restocking fee... :/
Just a thought. -
Of course, if notebookreview wants to cover the restocking fee, i'd certainly do the review! -
I ordered the WXGA screen, and I'll try to post pictures of the screen too if it's different from the 8510w. If it's not, which I'm expecting is the case, then I won't.
HP 8510p available!
