There are a few pictures of the two models side by side, of course you cannot appreciate fully but it looks like the DreamColor is much brighter.
As for the 8730w, the main improvement to me looks the quad-core support. I notice they used DDR2 memory, probably a good choice to contain the overall cost, considering that the performances of the DDR3 don't look so much better.
I didn't find info about the FX 3700M, is that going to be a major improvement over the 3600M?
Regardless the specs, I'm happy with this release : I hope that this will call for a price reduction of the 8710w, which is already a really good machine.
-
You mean these pictures... in case anyone hasn't seen them yet.
Anyway, I'm not sure that I like the new "I really wanna look like my little (adopted) bro Pavilion" design, but I will have to see it in person first.
Also, they moved the mic/headset jacks on the front for the 8730w, which is a trend that I dislike. -
Well this is looking pretty **** good in my opinion.
I actually dont like the look of it - but hopefully in person it looks better.
But it looks thin - so far.
Anyway, did I read that right? it said it will be available this month?!
Where did people get September.
I take "later this month" to mean the month were currently in. -
From HP website looks like the 8730w is for this month, while the 8530w is for September :
http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/newsroom/press/2008/080811xa.html -
I know the press release said that the 8530 models will start at $1499, but what kind of base config can we expect at that price? Looking at the current 8510 laptops, a decent config pushes the price up quite a bit!
-
The FireGL Mobility V5700 is most probably based on the Radeon Mobility HD 3650.
These are the only benchmarks from the ThinkPad W500 that we have so far.
http://66.102.9.104/translate_c?hl=...ge=0,3&usg=ALkJrhiteJBdMCQvsQuuV5KAT3Aj4gQaoA
It may start at 1700$ but that will be with the "cheap" FireGL V5725, then you can add like 1000$ just for the Quadro upgrade and there you go. -
So if the laptop has no firewire, and I want to still use my firewire drives, then do I have to buy a card for a firewire interface - do they make that?
sorry for dumb question. -

Now it should be Dell's turn to show its new Precision workstations and complete the picture. -
However the W700 is a bit bulky compared to the HP : 410mm x 310mm x 40.6-41.4 mm
-
The size:
8710w: 1.3 in (at front) x 15.5 in x 10.8 in (33 mm (at front) x 393 mm x 275 mm)
8730w: 1.3 in (at front) x 15.5 in x 11.1 in (33 mm (at front) x 393 mm x 283 mm)
-
If there was a 8730p model available, then the 8730w would start above 2200$. -
The good:
They have finally decided to use PC-Express card instead of old PC-cards that are getting outdated.
They have moved the headphone socket to a place where it doesn't is in the way of the mouse.
The bad:
They haven't added digital audio output. Possibly through HDMI but a seprate output would help.
They decided to remove 2 USB ports compared to 8710. I've never used all at them at once but 6 USB ports were quite cool. -

So the picture is almost complete, and we finally have some pretty good competition. -
This looks like the year of the mobile workstation, with so many completely new designs all at once.
-
-
Plus, the ThinkPad and Precision will have dual hard-drives, and probably there will be other things to consider as well.
We will see, but the Dell looks nice at this point. -
That's right, however I'm often traveling for work with the laptop, and then a thinner/lighter machine is always welcome.
I still dream of a reliable 15.4" with the 3600M : not going to buy the m15x but I'm very curious to see how it will manage with that video card. -
Yeah, I like "thin & light" notebooks too, that's way the HP 8710w was my favourite 17" notebook.
Btw, have a look at this thread...

Sacry stuff indeed. But is the Inquirer a reliable source? I noticed the threads about the Nvidia GPUs in the past weeks but I didn't think it was so serious.
If it is true, it would be very disappointing. I have nothing against ATI but their cards seem to be quite behind Nvidia ones at the moment. -
Not really behind this time. The HD 4000 desktop series is beating nVidia with power and cost. Hopefully the mobile version can do a good job too.
-
They are on the page now, not yet for sale though. Hopefully soon!!!!!!!!

For me eSata is a big plus, since I'm often running virtual PC's from an external HDD, and eSata performs better than both USB 2.0 and firewire.

It's so much easier to just plug in an external HDD directly, than to have carry with me a docking station.

Dang.... looked at the specs. Don't get me wrong, I knew my laptop would be out of date in a year, but still
Now I feel like getting one of the new HP business models or one of the new Thinkpads. Oh well, that's how technology goes.
-
Btw, the adapter is a cable that costs like 30$, so that's a non-issue.
rolleyes
notebook is hardly a significant upgrade, so I'm not sure what exactly you're complaining about...
-
Which notebook would be a better choice- the HP 8530w or the Dell Precision M4400? Both of them look very tempting...
-
Wait for the reviews...
-
-
Too bad they didn't add the Dream Color display on the 8510w.

Which laptops have you used in the past?
How's the keyboard? Flex?
Does the trackpoint work well?
How's the noise level under normal use? Under load?
What do you think of the LCD brightness/viewing angles/quality?
Any build quality issues?
Thanks! -

Hello everybody, I am just looking for a notebook to replace my current Vaio A317M. In the end, I am deciding between a Vaio AW series and a HP 8730w. And here is my question: my chosen 8730w has a 1680x1050 anti-glare LCD: does anybody know whether the LCD that is used is a TN display or a MVA one? How does the picture quality compare to the superb X-black Vaio LCDs? The DreamColor configuration is out of my budget...
Thanks for all replies! -
There is a coupon code on the HP website now (CTO8730w), which gives 18% discount on the 8730w until the end of the month. A pity it's only valid for US ...
