Howard, or to anyone else who has a Blu-ray drive internal or external, I'm curious as to what the CPU utilization percentage is during Blu-ray playback on the GeForce 105M and with which CPU. Any testers?

Mine is not blue ray drive so can't give you that figure, but I played MKV HD file of frost nixon now which MKV is highly compressed and use more of every resource than blue ray dvd would. with my P8700, 4 GB ram and G105m

    Ram usage 30 to 35%
Core 1 usage 20% give or take a few
Core 2 usage 35% give or take a few

So with blue ray movie, the usage should be less than my MKV high def files.
But if you have 4500HD, cpu usage will go higher.

As far as I'm aware of, the Geforce 105M and the 4500MHD both have 10 programmable unified pipelines and are both DirectX10 parts. As far as video acceleration is concerned, there would be virtually no difference between the two.

The 4500MHD has already been reported to completely handle video acceleration:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=380276

As long as you have the proper video codecs installed on your system, it'll utilize your GPU to decode video.

The only real advantage of having a 105M is because it's better suited for games because of it's higher clockspeed (4500MHD runs at 475MHz on the dv3t vs. ~600MHz for the 105M? (That would likely explain the heat some people are experiencing as well.)), its better geometric processing capability, anti-aliasing, and has drivers that are optimized for gaming. If Intel took the time to optimize their drivers for games and 3D performance, the 4500MHD may actually stand a chance, but as of now its 3D performance isn't great due to unoptimized drivers.

Edit: Actually, the GeForce 105M has 8 pipelines, down from 10 in the 9300M, but makes up for it by having a higher clockspeed. The 9300M had 10 pipelines but clocked lower.

I believe MKV is a container usually for H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, at least that's what people usually prefer to use when making MKV's. Blu-ray spec requires support for H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, VC-1, and MPEG-2, so CPU utilization should be the same for an MKV or Blu-ray with the same video quality. But given that people usually save space by encoding MKV's at 720p instead of the native 1080p of a Blu-ray, and definitely at a much lower bitrate, I would imagine it'd take more CPU utilization to playback a Blu-ray.

Currently, my CPU (P7350) usage hovers around 30-40% during Blu-ray playback with a 4500MHD. I'll can out an MKV.

What are you guys using for Blu-ray playback? HP Mediasmart DVD? Whenever I load a disc into mine, it says it is ready to play but nothing happens when I click play. This is after installing Windows 7...anyone know anything I would need to download to get it to work or any other free blu ray players? Thanks

I've noticed that too in Windows 7, but only with Mediasmart DVD 2.20 and later. You can do one of two things:
    1) Switch to the Windows Basic theme and then use Mediasmart DVD to play Blu-ray discs.
    2) Revert back to Mediasmart 2.1 which can be found here. This version will automatically switch to Windows Basic theme for you prior to playback. However, transparency effects for the control menus are not properly rendered and appear as solid black when they pop up. Be sure to run this in Compatibility mode for Windows Vista for it to properly install in Windows 7.

Under Windows Vista, switching to Basic theme appears to no longer be necessary when playing Blu-ray discs, which is why Mediasmart 2.20+ doesn't switch to it automatically anymore, although it seems to still be necessary under Windows 7 before playback is enabled.

Versions 2.20+ of Mediasmart DVD have updated compatibility with some recent Blu-ray movies and correctly render transparency effects of the pop-up controls, so I would probably stick with the latest version and just switch to Basic theme when you want to watch Blu-ray movies.

Update: I found a way to make the latest versions of Mediasmart DVD to work in Windows 7. Go into the Properties menu for the Mediasmart DVD shortcut/program in your Start Menu. Go to the Compatibility tab and check the "Disable desktop composition" check box and click Apply. It should automatically switch over to Basic when you play a Blu-ray disc, and back to Aero once you close Mediasmart DVD.

I was trying to do my updates today and after I did and the computer restarted I kept getting the blue screen. I dont know what is going on with those updates, but I just did a system restore and a virus scan and everything seems to be okay.

I don't know if this applies to anyone else, but I found that the "Realtek Semiconductor Corp. - Storage - Realtek USB 2.0 Card Reader" driver that shows in Windows Update causes my system to freeze and blue screen after installing. Once, it caused the screen to blank out, then the processor, cooling fan, and hard drive to run at maximum, making my system very loud and very hot until I held the power button for five seconds and forced it to shut down.

In Windows 7, it caused entire Windows functions to cease functioning, like Device Manager would not open and my system would not Shut Down completely. The driver wouldn't even uninstall in Safe Mode, forcing a System Restore.

Just wanted to say so far I'm *pretty* happy with my new dv3t…once in a while it seems to freeze up and I just had a problem where the screen went dark so I yanked the battery, plugged it in and restarted and everything *seems* ok.

Only excessive fan noise is briefly when it starts up, haven't checked the temps but doesn't seem usually warm. Fingerprint reader works great to login, although I can't use it for websites yet because the add-on (FingerAuth) is not compatible with DigitalPersona in the latest version of FF.

Also had a little difficulty registering for the Auto Detect feature for the Windows 7 upgrade, but finally solved it by using the 32-bit version of IE (was also the solution for the hp system check plugin).

I deleted most of the bloatware using Decrapifier, and installed BitDefender Internet Security shortly after burning the Recovery Discs (don't use Memorex btw, 3 of the 5 DVDs were unusable).

I got used to the pointer faster than I thought I would (got an MS laser notebook mouse anyway) and the glossy screen doesn't bother me. Only customized option I wish I had gotten was the backlit keyboard—not just for eyecandy but because the little indents on the F and J keys are so slight it's easy to miss them. Ran it once so far on the battery and was surprised how quickly it drained (have high capacity 6 cell) but I didn't want the protruding curve of the 9 cell, or to have to carry around the auto/air adapter *brick*.

Windows is taking some getting used to, Mac's are definitely more intuitive (surprise surprise) but I'm enjoying finally starting to feel like I know what I'm doing when I look at a Windows screen. HP seems to have a "Health Check" feature which checks for updates to drivers and stuff, so hopefully I won't have to worry about non-Mac stuff like "flashing the BIOS" and so on.

I was able to create a home network using Airport Base Station so now my (wired) Mac desktop and (wireless) dv3t can "peacefully coexist". About to take it on my first roadtrip so hopefully everything will go smoothly.

    Hi everyone.

I'm currently thinking of purchasing this laptop and wanted to know what is the best way to save money when purchasing. I've read a few people saying they got 30% off (which I believe is no longer valid) but I appeared to have missed that. Currently I only see a $100 of $899 and $200 off $1099.

These coupons say they're stackable on techbargains but I can't figure out how to use more than 1 coupon code in a purchase.

I also heard bing cashback is possible (how?).

Anyways any insight in how to pay less will be great.

For bing, register at bing.com, sign in and click on "shopping." Search for dv3t and when you get the HP direct shopping link, click through. Configure and buy the computer. Apparently you should then get a notification via your bing account that you'll be getting 25% back in 60 days' time.

If you can get an educational discount, I think you can sign in with HP's academic purchase program and then when you use bing.com to click through to HP you should be able to combine the educational discount with the bing 25% off discount. As far as I can tell it's only coupons that void the bing discount.

The 30% coupons seem to come out around once a month or so; if you wait around you could still get one.

I saw a 300 off around a week ago but it is no longer available. But be patient a 250 or better should pop up. Also, in reading Bing usage rules it states that the cash back DOES NOT apply to HP with other promotions but I could be wrong. As of right now the best deal I see is the 200 off that you referenced. If time is not of the essence I would hold off a week and see what becomes available. GL

I've got a strange problem... The maximum speed while transferring files onto a USB device (its a USB 2.0 HDD, and a USB 2 Memory stick) I get transfer speeds of only 6.0 Mbps or so. Can someone help me get it up to the claimed 480 Mbps. Thanks

Stackable means that you can apply the coupon with the instant discount HP is giving you, not that you can apply multiple discounts. So you would either get 250 off a 899+ pc or 350 off a 1099 pc as HP is giving you 150 off.

I don't think that the language stated "other promotions" would negate the bing cashback, but rather "coupons."

By the way, as I posted in a different thread, bing.com seems to have ended the double cashback promotion. When I check prices now the % of cash back is listed at 10-12% for HP instead of 25%. Bummer.

Ok a couple of questions. Has anyone undervolted their dv3t with a 105m and what were your results? also, the other day i downloaded a bunch of microsoft updates. and to my surprise i kept getting the blue screen upon boot up. a lil tinkering in safe mode told me that one of the updates was indeed causing the blue screen. i did not however write it down, but could anyone shed some light on why a windows update would cause me to get a blue screen? o_O

If you're having problems with updates you can always uninstall them. Just go into your programs/features and uninstall all updates if necessary and turn off automatic updates. If they updated the drivers, you can also uninstall/delete them and pick up some fresh ones at the manufacturer's site.

Greetings to all. I am new to this group and ordered a DV3T on Friday 9-4-09.

    My order is as follows:

HP Pavilion Entertainment dv3t customizable Notebook PC

    • HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

My last 3 notebooks have all been 13 inch top of the line Sony Vaio products. However, reading reviews of the comparable Sony right now, I found many, many folks posting bad reviews of the machines they had received. There were several bad reviews on Sony's own site.

My son got an HP notebook last year and was very pleased, so I thought I would give this one a try. In addition to what seemed like some truly valuable discounts with the system order, I was able to find a coupon that gave me an additional $660 off.

I also got HP's usb video docking station (VE022AA#ABA). The dock has already arrived and I was surprised at how well it works with my current laptop. The interface for installing the software (which seems to include firmware built right into the dock) seemed a little clumsy, but once installed it is working great. The video output (DVI) seems even better than what I was getting with a dedicated Sony docking station.

Today I was notified that my DV3T has been shipped from Kunshan China. I have elected 2 business day shipping. I live on the west coast in south west Washington state;does anyone have an idea of how long it will take for the machine to get to me?

Check www.techbargains.com and sign up for either Bing or Fatwallet (as well as the hp site for the model you want).

I think most models (all?) are shipping with a coupon code that entitles you to Windows 7 when it's released, there's no reason to wait unless you're worried about upgrade issues (which you shouldn't be, from what I've read).

Thank you Zachary. Hopefully this means I'll get it Monday. :) I checked the FedEx tracking number and found out that it went from Kunshan to Shanghai and just a little while ago got into Ankorage Alaska. So maybe is will get down to me over the weekend for delivery on Monday! It's coming to my office so there won't be a delivery on Saturday, but that just builds the excitement.

I ordered mine on 8/10, it shipped on 8/14, and it arrived on 8/19, so I haven't even broken the one month period yet. It's still brand new. :) I just passed the 21 days from delivery mark, so there's no turning back for me. This is actually the second one I ordered. This first I had the same config but with a T6500, but returned it and ordered this one when I found out about the 25W TDP of the PXXXX series Core 2 Duos compared to the 35W TDP of the TXXXX series.

My general opinion on it: I LOVE IT! It exceeds my old dv2000 in every aspect as far as I'm concerned. The one thing that really stood out to me is that this thing has AMAZING battery life. I'm able to squeeze out just over 7 hours of usage with wireless enabled on a 9-cell battery and over 4 1/2 hours on the 6-cell, which is twice what I'm used to coming from the dv2000. Of course, this is in Power Saver mode and I manually adjusted each advanced setting to my liking. Having the GMA 4500MHD helps in that area too. Usually, I would opt for discrete graphics, but after some research, I found that the GMA 4500MHD is probably the first Intel integrated graphics chip that everyone will be happy with if they don't play the latest 3D games. That, and I now have beef with Nvidia. If they offered the ATI 4330 on the dv3t, I probably would have opted for that for the sake of having some improved 3D performance.

Not to mention, it was one heck of a deal. For my configuration, it came out to $840 pre-tax.

Just wait until yours arrives and play around with it. In the end, I think you'll love it. :)

ya i went to best buy and played around with there display and i really liked it. but i wanted the nvidia card so i ordered it on hp website because no store around me had that option and they all had the Txxx processors and i did not want that one. i hope that nvidia has there stuff strait now. i have had my dv8000t for 3 years and it has the nvidia 7600gs card and i have never had a single problem with it and i hope my DV3t will last just as long...
thanks for sharing some info and the pic. now i just wish FEDEX would hurry it up...
