All of that seems to be done. Just like on Portal 2, absolutely no lag on power, but on battery its still OK if im looking in a corner but as soon as I open portals or start doing some fast actions, its starts to lag. like i suppose the FPS drops. is this a faulty GPU or drivers? should i do uninstall of video drivers + reinstall?

HyperPi takes 0.1 seconds longer to calculate 1M digits on battery...

But I doubt that's caused by the battery.

Lemme do some tests with Portal 2

Edit: and wow. 140 FPS drops to 70 FPS on battery.

huh. maybe it's all the i7s. Maybe it's the second run of envy 14s.

    I didn't get throttling.

fps for the end of portal 2 on my computer was the same both ways (well the end right before you go for the statemate resolution button to the end of the game before the ending movie)

eafd make sure link state power saving is disabled while on battery (and cooling isn't passive or whatever)

Fail. I had my 20+ CPU power settings the same (took me forever), but I forgot about the powerplay options at the bottom.

Edit: Lol, now my framerate's in the 30s

i mean its playable, but when i turn left or right i can tell its not smooth and it def slows down at high speed stuff

So you're saying that playing section 8: prejudice, i should be getting same FPS off battery as on it? cuz im getting like 10

you should but it could depend on the envy.

it could be some stuff built into the i7 envy 14s that we didn't know about til ..uh nowish.

mine doesn't seem to throttle (but I'm on an i5)

i7-720QM Envies are throttling to 665MHz or ~1300MHz when Furmark and prime95 are running.

    Throttlestop prevents this from happening.
    After about 15 minutes:

    TinyGrab - Simple. Screenshot. Sharing.

HP uses chipset clock modding in the Envy 14. All you have to do is check chipset clock mod to 100% and set multiplier to turbo to disable any sort of throttling.

No lag on my computer, even when running prime95 + Furmark and about 5 other full applications and around 5 utilities.

GPU seems content at around 85-86C. CPU floats at around 90C, but it's probably lower on any other i7 computer. The HP technician botched the thermal compound application on my Envy.

Oh, and the i7's turbo'd TDP is 55W.

i have a question for you guys. I bought a 500gb hard drive, and i wanted to restore an image of an xp that is used for work related onto this drive, but once restored and rebooted and passed windows xp, i got the blue screen.

Now I thought well it didn't work too bad, I guess the hardware is different or whatever I had no idea. However reading stuff about ahci got me thinking. Since the xp image was from a non ahci pc and the envy is running in ahci mode, could that have caused the blue screen?

Also in which cases is ahci enabled on a system? Trying to figure out if the xp machine had that enabled or not, don't know.

    Anyways appreciate any help.

You really shouldn't need XP. Windows 7 has proven itself to be reliable, and Windows 7 Pro and up include an XP virtual machine.
If you absolutely must have XP, try a clean install.

You can always enter advanced BIOS mode and turn AHCI off.

There's a thread (probably still on the first page) that tells you how to do it.

However, I think it's more likely that some drivers or whatever are simply incompatible with XP (same as the guy with the HDX, he had a similar XP problem a little while ago.)

I just got my hp envy 14 beats and I am loving it. I am sorry if this is an old question - I tried searching the forums but had no luck. My hp logo on the back is not lit up - can I turn it on, or is something wrong with it? Thanks!

My Envy 14 has a VERY FAINT glow around the HP logo on the back of the laptop screen. The beats logo definitely does not light up though. Is that back HP supposed to be brighter?

Apparently the logo does light up, but HP blocked it with something. So it might as well not light up

Is the HP logo clear or covered with black? If it's clear, then chances are it's just the light leaking through the display. I know the BV has some leakage through the back of the screen, in normal Envies the HP logo actually shines through the front of the screen very faintly when the computer is shutting down and the screen is off. I covered the back of the logo with some electrical tape to prevent this.

HP didn't quite do a well enough job of covering the light up logo with black tape.

The light you're seeing if the logo is clear could be light leaking out of the display.

Has anyone tried WiDi and had success connecting to your tv with the adapter???

I don't know if the envy 14 is capable of wireless tv, kinda shame as I don't think so. Anyone know if there is any way or someone that had such success?

Na I dont think the Envy 14 supports it which is dissappointing. I know because there was a whole application for it and annoying notifications for WiDi when I had the dv6tse.

Thanks everybody - I suppose the colour is not right so they blocked it, or it was a bit OTT with the big Beats logo. Mine seems to be blocked well - no light seeping anywhere.

Also, seems that HP has managed to get the QC right with the Envys. Mine doesn't have any of the issues reported in these forums and shown on youtube!

hey guys , the option for go to sleep when closing the lid is found in bios , right

what about somewhere in power options, i recently sold my desktop computer and am using envy as a replacement, got it hooked on a 32 inch philips fullhd lcd and with a plugged in mouse and keybord, so i would like to keep the lid closed all the time while in this type of setup

the option to put it to sleep when you close the lid is in power settings.

however the computer still does dumb stuff when you close the lid (it resets to a different screen/projector setting for whatever reason)

    Hi,
I was wondering how the gaming performance is with starcraft 2?
Does the quad core make a difference compared to the Dell 15z?

    Thanks

If you want a laptop, wait for the SB processor update for the Envy series.

Don't get the Dell XPS 15z for gaming, its Nvidia GT 525M is ranked lower by notebookcheck than the current GPU in the Envy series.

if you really want a laptop for gaming that's from HP, go grab a DV6t sandy bridge with the radeon 6770 mobility (GDDR 5 version if there's a choice between DDR3 and GDDR5) and the 1080p screen.

    Reason: The bios is retarded

Solution: Sadly, you gotta just not close the lid. Also apparently the heat flow is worse when the lid is closed (somehow..just notice that the computer is warmer with the lid closed whenever I do that hdmi out thing)

The lid keeps heat in, blocks the main source of air for the GPU fan (through the keyboard), and sort of blocks the CPU fan.

ok. I have a serious issue with my screen. I'm guessing maybe it's tons of dead pixels? I'm not sure. I'll post some pictures to see if anyone smarter than me might know. I didn't do anything to it, it just happened, and the dead pixels (?) started spreading and getting worse but have now kind of settled. I do have accidental damage protection, though, so no matter the issue, I should be able to get it fixed. I bought my envy last September and this happened probably around Christmas but I've been so busy with school this past semester that I just figured I'd wait until summer to send it in to be fixed. Anyway, my question (other than what on earth the green blobs on my screen ARE), is will I be able to have it replaced with another radiance screen? I'm just realizing that HP no longer offers the Envy with them and am really pissed off at the possibility that I might not be able to get it fixed. I wouldn't even have bought the laptop if I'd known I'd be stuck with a low-res screen if anything ever went wrong. Maybe this has been addressed before, but I couldn't find anything about whether HP will replace a broken radiance screen with another radiance screen. Anything anyone could tell me would be greatly appreciated :)

    wow.

ok that's the second radiance screen this has happened to in a month or so.

and those are either dead pixels or mold. gonna say dead pixels . you may just be out of luck with new radiance screens. Not sure what you can get done.

I know other people who have had to send their E14s in have gotten 256 gb SSDs or something in compensation.

Ha, well, I already have a 256 SSD. I honestly can't think of anything that would satisfy me other than having the screen replaced/fixed. I saved for years and bought a top of the line laptop and a great screen was at the top of my list. I'd honestly would want to just return it if a replacement isn't possible, although, since I bought it last September, I'm guessing that isn't an option. Ugh.

I know where you can buy JUST the Radiance panel itself.

It'll be tough to swap out, but it should work.

    Costs around 120 bucks.

    Edit: 135 now

And no, Radiances by themselves can't be found on eBay as of the last time I checked

    Hey Guys!!

My HP Envy 14 Beats - Envy 14 1190eo screen is cracked..

I wan't to replace it myself, but I have searched for a guide for days now - with no result.

Do any of you have a guide? Maybe with pictures?
I really don't want to crack the front glass.

I'm pretty sure it's not possible. Otherwise, people would be able to record with the webcam without turning on the light.

hi, is there a guide/heuristic for getting the envy 14 to run at anything like an acceptable speed.

this thing was slowing markedly after about two weeks, often taking a couple of seconds to change tabs in firefox, even when windows plays sounds they will often come out distorted if the cpu is under any load

a clean install didn't work because this one (1190ea uk version) uses some custom broadcom drivers which wouldn't install independently, so i had to use the recovery disks with all the hp bloatware trash. there's very little other software installed, disk is defragmented etc.

i hate this computer, only bought it because my old vaio was dying and i needed it immediately for work. i can't be bothered with this crap just to be able to browse the internet.

Do a minimized image recovery, that's minimal bloatware.

Look into the envy 14 throttling problem. I think it was a few pages ago, but also read into the envy 17 sb throttling problem on the front page, because both problems are similar.
