Okay so I downloaded the file from the link you gave me and ran it. My envy is now has a black screen and the fans are going like there's no tomorrow. It's been this way for the past 10minutes. Should I force shutdown or is it usual?

    yeah.

    restart it.

there's a chance your version of switchable graphics hates on 11.2 and 11.3 though, never really found out). The original set of graphics (8.713) did this too but the fan didn't go on overdrive.

you may have to start over with this version and put 11.2 or 11.3 or whatever on top of them.

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp50001-50500/sp50027.exe (this is the version I use and it works fine. Screen goes black but then comes back when installing).

you'd have to delete the all the drivers and start over though.

edit: but first just restart and see which version has installed. If you have a version higher than 8.771 then it installed (but you may need to run the 11.3 executable again 'cause a couple things may not have finished)

Some OEM vendors (Sony and Toshiba mainly) tell AMD to not suppor their computers.

The GPU driver downloader from AMD detects what laptop brand the gpu is from. If it is a sony or toshiba it won't download the drivers.

The same thing happens if it uses switchable graphics with an i5 or i3 or sandy bridge.

Doesn't mean you can't just download the drivers manually and try to install them

    huh.

I'm just gonna assume that something wiht the 8.771.0 drivers make them not like updating to 11.2/11.3

I've never had it out right crash.

I also have never had the 8.771 drivers installed

ya. 11.3 is the CCC/Driver version.

Windows reports a different driver version.

11.3 also stands for March 2011 (the month and year the drivers were supposed to be out on...even though they came out in April)

All of my icons in Libraries and half of them in the Start Menu have been corrupted and now just show up as blank pieces of notebook paper (you know, that generic icon for programs). I've deleted my iconcache.db file and restored it millions of times to no avail. Did anyone else have this problem on the Envy? I'm considering just doing a clean install.

haven't had that problem with windows before.

yeah you may wanna clean install.

    couple notes.

If you remove the ethernet cord while clean installing you will not be able to install ethernet drivers without first going into the bios and turning off ethernet power saving.

second note: Please use this version of the hp gpu package ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp50001-50500/sp50027.exe

    from this page: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...s-hp-dm4-dv5-2xxx-g32-cq32-envy-14-intel.html

the rest of the drivers you can use the latest version on that page or whatever you have in swsetup. It doesn't matter.

However for gpu purposes the one I linked is the most stable when upgrading from it to catalyst 11.2/11.3. It doesn't crash/keep a black screen for until you restart/whatever while installing the drivers.

    The others apparently do.

For bluetooth you need to (depending on which CTO you have but it may be most/all of them) install the HP Wireless Assistant from your swsetup directory. From there you use that program to turn on the bluetooth radio (if you ever turned it off with that program) or else you will be unable to install the bluetooth drivers. You also have to have the wifi turned on.

Final note: IF you are reinstalling with the product code for windows 7 that came with your envy 14 you need to use ABR to back up your activation. Otherwise the code won't activate windows properly when you clean install and you'll have to spend a few minutes on the phone with microsoft in order to get a phone activation code.

ABR and other clean install info: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-compaq/432564-hp-laptop-out-box-guide-2-0-windows-7-a.html

Thanks for the tips! Ugh clean installing seems like a real pain in the butt, I'm making recovery disks now.

Hey, how do I keep some of the software HP put on my Envy? Like photoshop elements 8, is there a program to get that back once I clean install?

hey guys i was wondering how does a BIOS update help my Notebook? Cooler temps, longer battery life?

Currently my BIOS is still F.06, 7/21/2010 (have not updated it since the first day I received my notebook)

HP Support Assistant is telling me to update my BIOS Update UEFI. I've heard stories that updating BIOS beyond F.07 or F.12 pretty much renders your recovery discs useless?

What are your thoughts on this? My notebook seems to be running fine so far without giving me much troubles..

    Thanks!

ok if you have adobe stuff on there you need to save your cd key by looking through the registry.

you can either try: If you registered your software, you can choose Help > Registration to display your serial number.

or see if it shows up with About.com: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

if you can find the serial (hp doesn't give you the serial since their license kinda only goes with the initial install or something..but whatever) you can download the trial version of the software and put in that cd key to turn it into a full version.

if you have an original envy/an envy that is pre F.22 or something then yeah updating past F.06 will take away your ability to use recovery discs.

It also will add an option or two in the bios (turn off ethernet power saving which is useful when clean installing. Though you can just not unplug the ethernet cable at all while clean installing. It'll work fine then).

but really if you don't wanna lose the ability to use recovery discs don't bother updating the bios. None of the changes will help you out if your computer is running fine.

looking stuff up the 540m is a bit above the 5650.

notebookcheck's 5650 stuff doesn't quite take into account that the envy's 5650 is clocked at 450/800 instead of 550/800 (though that's really only like 3 fps).

Still both are comparable. It would all depend on what screen resolution your envy had. 1366x768? Probably would fair the same as M11.

1600x900, fps will drop some compared to the M11 but you also are at a higher resolution so that is expected.

All I'll say is that in general the 5650 has been fine but it IS a mid level card. It's also getting a little bit old.

How long are you gonna hang on to your computer? 'cause if possible I'd try to get a sandy bridge laptop if you wanna hang onto yours for 3 years (I bought my envy 14 10 months ago, it'll last me for a couple more years but after that I'll probably go after something new)

Better thermal compound was shown not to help by much (maybe 1-2 degrees) by someone a while ago...

According to 2.0 the paste they use is Shin-etsu microsi. Apparently it's not that bad according to a few reviews (although they do make various versions. so they might not be reviewing the one that's in the Envy)

edit: I found a guy in the envy 15 forums that says the same thing, and 2.0 says that the compound is the same across all HPs

double edit: cool, the forums automatically makes "envy 15" link to some page about it

Bluetooth drivers are the latest but i my computer still doesn't sleep automatically.
Could it be the Graphics driver?
As stated in my earlier post, i'm using the i7 version and updated my graphics driver straight off ATI's website.
Never tried Hp's driver yet though..

anyone know if they are going to do a sandybridge refresh and bring back the 1600x900 screen in the envy 14? With the 1366x768 being the only screen option, I just can't help but feel the dm4t is the better laptop thanks to the cheaper pricetag and exact same hardware offerings.

I'm in the market for a laptop and seem to keep coming back to the HP since I get a huge discount through an employee incentive program from my employer.

I dont think HP is going to announce the Envy refresh, if they would, they wouldn't be able to sell the current gen as people would just wait for the refresh. I believe they'll just announce it when it is out.

I've had two isolated incidents here on my Envy that have been resolved by restarts, but make me wonder if there might be something wrong:

Each time the issue occurred after waking the computer up from sleep mode (which I do several times a day). With the exception of a couple programs the first time, though I don't remember which, any keyboard input caused the selected program to enter a non-responsive state. In other words, I try to type something, and whatever I'm typing in stops working. I can confirm that the problem occurred in Chrome, Skype, IE9, and QQ (Chinese instant messenger client).

Anyone experience anything like this, or know of anything that might be causing it?

I don't know if this has been discussed before but do any of your Envy 14/Envy 14 BE have a white light under the J, K and L keys?
Its hardly noticable when your facing your laptop normal but when if you tilt the notebook such that you can see beneath the keys, you can see this white glow under those keys. Best is to put your eyes just above the track-pad. I have no idea where the light is coming from could be the wireless light but those key are already pretty far away. And when the wireless is disabled and the led changes to orange, the white light under the j, k and l keys don't change to orange.
Weird that they put a led under the keyboard which serves no purpose..

I have a regular Envy 14 CTO 1000 model, and I see a little point of light under the K key when I look at it from just the right angle. It's probably something internal that has an LED indicator primarily for diagnostic purposes, but don't quote me on that.

Have you actually tested the time?

It could be a bad battery. Incorrect BIOS discharge reporting shouldn't affect actual tested times. If it has a 51K discharge rate, it should only last maybe an hour or so.

Is anyone having internal microphone problems/have a fix?

Haven't used the mic (or webcam at all), but just now tried to do a voice recording and it has lots of background noise/sounds like I'm in a tin can. I'm using the Audio Output Tweak - from JJB and other stuff doesn't sound this bad (listen to link below) so I don't think it's my playback settings.

Vocaroo | Record and send voice emails (the room was dead silent at the time of this recording)

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Go into the Recording options Integrated Microphone array and try turning off the mic enhancements. There are some enabled by default that make recordings sound... interesting. They also have it boosted by about 10 db by default too. Try turning that down, it's under levels.

Hi, looking for UK envy 14 owners who bought the German envy 14 and are stuck with a German keyboard. Willing to buy or swap with US-keyboard!

    well that's odd.

I guess run the battery test in the bios and see what it says.

The battery could have gone bad on you. Otherwise, maybe there's something always running and draining some cpu (go to the task manager and see what your cpu usage is while idle). If the cpu usage isn't like 0-5% something is going on.

I have a quick question I am hoping someone might be able to help me with. I just purchased a new Envy and the hp logo part of the screen bulges out a bit at the bottom. This isn't so much the viewing screen bulging out as the black part at the bottom with the logo, and it's not terribly noticeable, but I can almost get my fingernail underneath it.

While this is almost entirely a very slight cosmetic issue, I am also worried about dust getting underneath the screen. Is there any sort of adhesive I could use that won't interfere with anything? Anyone else had this issue before? I can post pics if necessary. Thanks in advance!

mine sticks out like a millimeter or so.

if yours sticks out more than that *shrugs* Take a picture of it at an angle (like with the screen flat so people can see how far it sticks out).

I don't believe I can get a fingernail underneath mine since the plastic goes down a bit
