With SSD's you want to uninstall that, it does absolutely nothing for SSD's, just adds 2 or 3 useless processes / services running in the backround. Having the 'Unknown Device' listing in device manager after uninstall is normal, just ignore it....

"Hey your laptop is freefalling LOCK UP THE HDD STOP IT FROM ACTING SO IT DOESN'T BREAK!!!"

not really an issue for ssds since they don't have moving parts

I'm told Apple uses a similar hard drive feature to assess warranty eligibility as it (possibly) measures how the laptop has been moved around and treated.

How did you uninstall it? When I go to device manager to uninstall it, it just re-installs when I restart my Envy.

Sounds like you have the auto update feature turned on, disable the auto and choose for it to ask you before installing updates (Win 7). If you haven't got rid of HP support assistant yet it may be that crapware reinstalling it for you....

Also device manager should have a popup that asks if you want to remove (or delete) it from the computer, if you get this prompt choose to remove it completely.

I haven't had any new problems since the update. I think this one might be pretty good. They still haven't fixed the Recovery Discs, but since most everyone clean installs anyway I guess it's not really important. HP's software takes away the performance of the computer. Really, since installing f.13 I have been having a little bit more stability. I just wish they would offer an option to enable or disable hyperthreading in the BIOS.

Got my box yesterday, packing it off and sending it out Friday afternoon. It should get shipped out Monday morning and arrive in the wastelands of Texas by Tuesday afternoon.

I'm most definitely writing a thorough description of ALL of the problems. I may even enclose laser-printed photos of the problem so even an idiot can see what's wrong.

Why would you possibly want to disable hyperthreading  There is ZERO reason to do that and it may even cause problems in certain 64 bit apps.....

I just wonder if it might improve battery life and get even lower temperatures after I read some things about the added overhead that it brings to the cpu. I've heard a lot of stuff wasn't really good at multithreading yet, I don't use a lot of high demand apps anyway. I've also read that it has negligble performance increase in some apps, and that some applications benefit more from the full core than the hyperthreaded ones.

Mostly just to mess around, virtualization is an option, it'd be nice if hyperthreading was too.

Occasionally (usually after sleep) my screen will be faded out real whitish looking for a while. Does this mean I have a bad video card or something? I think it happens most on integrated graphics.

Yes you can get everything back you have now. There is actually a great guide on the first page that you can follow. It comes down to:

    -Create recovery DVDs
    -Backup C:\SWSETUP
    -Clean install
-Reinstall drivers from either HP website or the HP Envy driver thread

    Good luck

I think its supposed to offend Caucasians. "Cuz caucasians are too damn tall/big." The japanese one was much funnier, cuz it had subtitles haha.

Anyhoo, so what's the consensus on the "glass screen" ? Is it supposed to be "glass" regardless of which version screen one has? Or is it glass only on the "Radiance" version (not non-radiance nor BE)?

Niether one uses real glass, it's an engineered 'glass' (read as acrylic polymer) kind of like what apple uses on the iPhone 4 but lower tech. And Yes it can scratch.

If you're talking about if the screen has the flush, frameless look, i think the brightview infinity display does have that. If you look at the hp dv6t se series, they have the brightview infinity display and has the "glass" screen look

@Both of you. I've seen the dv6 at OfficeDepot, and indeed it has that "flush" looking look, but it felt really crappy plastic. Almost like thin acrylic/polycarbonate plastic. Does the E14 share this? Also, does the Radiance "glass/plastic" differ from the Brightview infinity, or are they both of the same glass/plastic? Know what I mean?

You can use reliability monitor to see what exactly was installed or changed on your computer when the reliability went downhill. I have also installed the Win 7 hotfix for "the computer randomly freezes and you get a program not responding message in many applications" and also uninstalled IE8 compatability view update after reading that someone else got rid of some freezing problems by removing it. So far it has been running a lot better for the past couple of weeks but I don't know if you are having the same type of freezing issues as I was. If it's hard freezes that don't work themselves out you might want to check ram and SSD (not sure how you do that) to rule out bad hardware. Also if you're running on power saver power plan the processor is throttled back to 1.3GHZ, I am thinking that this may have been what was causing my sound problem.

Please consider adding this information on the first thread of the HP Envy 14 thread.

I had done a clean install of Windows7

Whenever, I close the lid on my laptop, I would lose control over the brightness controls on the keyboard.

After some research some people suggested to make adjustments to the power settings, to "do nothing" when the laptop lid is closed.

Someone else said updating the Monitor drivers but did not specify what exactly what to do.

Here is the solution that I've found.

    Go to Device Manager
    Go to Monitors
    Select Update Drivers
Browse my computer for driver software
Let me pick a list of device drivers on my computer
    Unckeck "Show compatible hardware"
To the right of "(Standard Monitor Types) - select "Digital Flat Panel (1920x1080 60hz) or 1600x900 for some people.

Now try setting your power setting to sleep and close the lid. You should still be able to adjust screen brightness from the keyboard without any issue.

This issue has nothing to do with the ATI drivers from HP or AMD/ATI Mobility 10.8

I had installed and uninstall numerous times the video driver. Only to find out it was the Monitor Driver at fault!

I've got a strange problem with Media player and the Windows Live mail.

All the task bar areas and window frames are completely white with only the black text from the button showing. Similarly the play/pause/skip controls look strange.

I've tried reinstalling media player but it didn't help.

hit esc when you start the computer up.

hit the button for system diagnostics (hope you still got your system diagnostic stuff still setup)

run the hdd one. run the memory one.

if niether finds stuff run the bios versions to make sure.

if still nothing, run memtest+ overnight to totally rule out the ram. (from a usb stick since from a cd at least for my computer tends to reset for no reason sometimes. 'course it seems my envy has some cd loading issues in general and I still dunno why. I can't load hiren's boot cd at all on it)

I installed F13 the first day it was available, and I haven't had any issues. I have a clean Win7 x64 Ultimate installation. Note with F13, HP updated the installation file to 'force flash', so it works fine on clean installs (previously had to change force flash manually for clean installs).

I've seen this happen twice now over the course of a few days.

The screen will flash green, then pink, then go back to normal.

it's only happened twice. have no clue why it's happening.

I know that's a sign something is probably wrong. I'm using a radiance screen.

    aww man.

Same for me. I've been running F.13 A after a clean install of Windows Home Premium. The only issue with BIOS versions later than F.06 A seems to be that System Recovery does not work with these later BIOS versions. I have been able to revert back to F.06 A, however, and test that System Recovery works under that BIOS, then re-upgrade to F.13 A.

    yeah. it's a pain.

I have a feeling the reason why tiny xp mode doesn't work is because well...hey their switchable graphics card that absolutely, positively won't support Windows XP.

the dos stuff though. it's like the cd drive just stops working after awhile.

When I try to hibernate, all that happens is that the display goes blank. Sometimes it will stay blank, sometimes after a few seconds of blankness, the Switch User screen appears. The power & wireless lights stay illuminated and all keys seem to respond. Pressing Enter gets the normal desktop back. But no hibernating seems to happen.

Any idea how I can diagnose this problem?

Did you ever figure this out?

When plugged in, Windows boots with the ATI graphics running and the X-rite ICC profile is automatically loaded immediately. Switching to integrated graphics also keeps the X-rite profile. Everything's good when plugged in.

When on battery, Windows boots with the integrated graphics and the default sRGB color profile NOT the X-rite, even though I've set the X-rite profile as default with the method someone previously typed up beforehand for both integrated and ATI graphics. I have to use DisplayProfile and manually change it to X-rite every time I boot on battery AND every time the display turns off after a few minutes idle for power savings or I shut the lid and it goes to sleep and then open it up again. It gets pretty annoying to have to do so. It won't stick when on battery.

Is there maybe a way we can insert the video driver into the ISO? The Dos worked for me, but I didn't mess with it for more than 10-15 minutes. Mini Linux booted up too. Mini XP is the only one that doesn't work.

I ran a system info program in DOS and it ran ok, now that I think about WinXP, I remember using a BartPE disc one time, and I was thinking maybe it isn't the video drivers, but the AHCI drivers. WinXP can't see the Sata drives in Raid or AHCI, it has to have drivers f6'ed into the installation process. Maybe if we could include our sata drivers in the ISO it will boot?

I sent my laptop for repair and it has already been delayed from oct 4 to oct 15, I got no call like I did before when it was delayed so I can hope that my laptop will arrive tomorrow?

As the status still says: HP Estimate Delivery date: October 15

Should I expect laptop to be here tomorrow?

Anyone know why my scrolling/typing are starting to lag up? Started happening today. Occasionally my characters typed don't show up for 2-3 seconds or the up/down scrolling that I initiate doesn't take place for 2-3 seconds.

Any suggestions/tips would be appreciated! (If not, oh well, I'll try to figure it out though I'm a bit busy, have to also send the Envy to the depot tomorrow afternoon)
