Good to hear your Envy arrived and that you got the keyboard sorted.
Can't help you on the webcam issue. Maybe reinstall the drivers?
-
yea tried that with no luck... its really weird that it was just working close the app opened it again and it was all redish or pink. anyways everything else is in good condition. btw may i ask why you got the 1020-ed rather than the german? because the dutch model is well over priced
-
Are you using HP's mediasmart for webcam or some other software? If you're using HP's software you might try and update it. They have a version now that supports HD resolutions on their website.
-
The 1020ED was still a bit overpriced, but I didn't pay the retail price of €1499. In the last two weeks of September there was a small batch of 1020ed's available at several online shops. This batch of approx 10 pieces sold out in a few weeks and I was fortunate enough to have the money burning in my pocket and instantly bought one when they popped up. I payed €1380 for it, which is probably €80 more than yours, and yours came with a better CPU. However I didn't want to go and replace the keyboard myself. And the keyboard itself would have cost €80.
Thanks for the tip on the HD resolution, going to try it right now.

what do you guys use to clean your screen? i thought i remember reading somewhere that microfiber cloths scratch this screen easily?
i could be wrong... -
I just placed my order for an Envy 14. Now the wait begins.
-
We use baby cashmere.
-
Does anyone know how to fix the issue where E14 wont go to sleep?Running powercfg energy, and it says :
System Availability Requests:System Required Request
The device or driver has made a request to prevent the system from automatically entering sleep.
Driver Name \FileSystem\srvnet
This issue happen yesterday, after installing Starcraft II
EDIT:Fixed, now it sleeps!

This GPU switching software upgrade is a dud. After having no problems for a few days, I just switched to integrated and got a dark screen. What on Earth?
EDIT: Wow. Forced a shut down, tried switching to integrated again. I deleted the original driver since everyone was crowing about how it has no problems. -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
it's a piece of crap.
I've gotten it like a few times.
my only advice is to not be doing anything on the computer before swapping.
otherwise bad things can happen since ati switchable graphics isn't perfect yet.
also, try not to start it up on one gpu and have it swap to the other while booting (say turn it on while unplugged while you were on the ati or turn it on while plugged in while you were on the intel gpu) -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
or are you having a different issue zeth?
the stuff I've had happen is the brightness is all screwed up, making it be very dark but you can sorta see stuff (this is at max brightness) on one gpu.
the other is fine. swap back and forth, the messed up gpu stays messed up til reboot. -
Don't think so. It just went blank.
Went for try #3, no problems this time.
Too bad I need to send it back soon. Off to FedEx AGAIN this friday.
F...M...L...
-
@Zeth
After all the issues you had with your last repair from HP you are sending it back to them again
It sounds like your just having a simple software issue which, worst case, you should be able to just revert back (or re-install) the previous version. Or did I miss a more serious problem your having....

Question to ya'll:
Does the non-Radiance screen E14 (the 1366x768 reso) have a "glass-screen" like the Radiance one? Specifically, the one that's sold on amazon here: Amazon.com: HP Envy 14-1110nr 14.5-Inch Relic Laptop PC - Up to 3.45 Hours of Battery Life (Carbon): Computer & Accessories ?
Very interesteddddddd, Thx! -
I'm pretty sure it does. Correct me if i'm wrong.
Does anyone know which driver hpdskflt is? I think mine is corrupted or something because it keeps causing a warning in Event Viewer and it freezes my Envy sometimes. -
Additional serious problems
Some dimwit technician swapped out my 4gb single DIMM for a 2gb single DIMM and I'm unable to take apart the inside of the notebook because one of the screws' + hole is so worn out that I can't take it out.
If that wasn’t enough, I received my notebook back with the ribbon cable poking out between the seams near the hinge and a few ugly scratches where the dimwitted technician clearly tried to push it back in but decided just to ship it back to me without giving it a second thought.
To add icing to the cake, the same idiot case manager who's handling my problem sent me a 2gb DIMM instead of a 4gb DIMM, so I need to call him tomorrow and tell him I'm returning it so he can send me a 4gb. Hello, HP! Your case managers should be trained to SOLVE problems, not to AGGRAVATE THEM!
Yes, as you can tell, I'm not very happy with my purchase. -
Are repairs done in China, Taiwan, or Cali?
-
Worse than any of the 3. Texas.
-
Haha. that made me think of this old commercial from Sony. I originally saw it in the Japanese version, but couldnt find it. Here's the english dubbed version though: YouTube - Banned Racist SONY Commercial
Hope it doesnt offend anyone. It's hilarious as f*k though haha. -
Pretty funny commercial. Who exactly is supposed to be offended? Both Japanese and caucasians? Or just one of the 2?
-
I think closing the lid (standby) thn opening it again might solve it. The graphics switching definitely needs an update though.
-
It's a file that's associated with HP 3D Drive Guard. You should disable it because you are using an SSD and they don't need the protection it offers. It's in the control panel as HP 3D Drive Guard.
-
Putting it manually into sleep then ending sleep mode fixes it.
Any chance someone might have a copy of the earlier version of the video driver lying around that's better than version 4.0.1 but not as new as the current one? -
what does everybody use to clean their screens on their envys?
-
i normally use water + surf/ariel solution to clean the screen . this works best for me , better than isoproply alcohol or any cleaning product
-
How do I check what version my envy is, i.e. 10xx or 11xx? All the places I look it shows a Vxxxx alphanumeric product / model number for me
-
getting frustrated here, and maybe i just don't know what i'm doing.
i got this laptop to handle programs we run in architecture school (revit/cad/cs5/3dsmax/etc...). i'm running revit this morning, and it seems more laggy than my desktop that only has a duo-core processor, and is MUCH more dated than this...
are there some settings i need to tweak? i figured it would be ready to go right out of the box. -
I think the number can be found in the BIOS on the first page.
I have no problems running CS5 on my Envy at all, even on the Intel GPU it doesn't really lag. Did you use the Intel or ATI GPU? -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
if that program uses the ati gpu to do stuff, make sure it isn't throttling itself.
it gets confused by powerplay sometimes and runs at 300/300. usually after you swap from ati to intel and back and/or when you unplug and plug it back in.
you can fix the problem by going into the catlyst control panel, picking powerplay from the dropdown menu, turning powerplay off (checkbox), hitting apply, and then turning powerplay back on.
that or just reboot while plugged in and on the ati gpu. -
did that, and part of the reason i think it wasn't performing like i wanted was b/c the power option was on power saver, not high performance.
working fine now it seems. -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
ok.
yeah that might be why.
as an aside, some of the envy computers get a weird artifacting issue if you put it to sleep and wake it up while on high performance.
doesn't happen on balanced/hp recommended even if you make it pretty much the same as the high performance profile.
soo...if you get weird artifacting, go back to balanced.
(this is like static stuff that blinks in and out in a few vertical lines that go across the entire screen). -
If you are just running it out of the box then the problem is most likely all the crapware that HP preinstalls and if it's your first few days after initial boot up your HDD might still be getting indexed by Win 7 which can bog things down.
I highly recommend that you do a clean install to fully remove all the crapware and the dozens of unecessary processes and services that are running in the backround, they just bog everything down. Look on page 1 for all sorts of guides, tips and tweaks to improve performance. Your 720QM should blow away your old core 2 with the complex apps like CAD....
Also make try using the 'high performance' power plan setting to see if it helps.
EDIT: ignore the last line, looks like you figured that out yourself.... -
This is something I've been wondering about: does the Envy 14 in general come with actual glass screens? Because on my Beats Edition, it sure does feel like plastic to me...
-
I'm also getting warning messages from hpdskflt, and I've done a clean install and have not installed HP Drive Guard. Any idea why this warning is occurring?
EDIT - It looks like HP Mobile Data Protection Sensor was installed as a recommended update by Windows Update. There doesn't seem to be any way in Windows Update to uninstall that particular update. -
It's not actual glass, I have the envy 14 radiance screen and it feels plastic as well.
-
Great, thanks. Been bugging me. Not that I really care either way, just like to know that I have what I'm supposed to have.
-
Updated the thread
http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-envy-hdx/524487-envy-14-video-driver-problem.html
Has anyone else experienced the same problem? -
Re:CAD performance... thanks for the tips, JJB. The standard setting seem to be fairly balanced, so not maximum performance basically. I found playing with the advanced settings in the power plans (under the battery icon) helped. Didn't even realise there was a High Performance option 'til I went fishing around for it.
Adjusting the options in the Catalyst Control Center also helps, thanks MagusDraco.
Also, messing around with the graphics settings in the software can make things snappy (in a good way) after doing the above. All depends what you're using, day-to-day, huh? -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
yeah. that happens.
just install hp drive guard and then disable it. 'bout all you can do.
well you could search for the sensor in your device manager and disable it there, but not sure where it'll be -
Mine was automatically disabled, but I keep getting warnings about hpdskflt. Are you sure it's the 3D Drive Guard?
-
Isnt the free fall sensor independent of the software
-
Pretty sure it is. Apparently that driver has given lots of people problems. Maybe you could try removing it to see if the freezes go away.
-
Alright, i'll uninstall it. Hopefully it solves the problem. I wont be able to tell until after a week maybe because the freezes happen very randomly and Event Viewer keeps showing a warning about hpdskflt when it happens.
-
I can see the driver file if I go to Control Panel>Device Manager>Disk drives>double-click on my SSD drive>Driver>Driver Details. I see 3 files in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers: disk.sys, hpdskflt.sys and partmgr.sys. There doesn't seem to be a way to uninstall the hpdskflt.sys file without uninstalling the whole disk driver.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
hmmm...
try to find hp mobile data protection sensor in system devices in your device manager.
try to disable it and see what happens.
oh as an aside, in case things break horribly somehow (though...really I don't see how they could) back some stuff up first. -
HI Guys need help.
got my E14 today from Amazon. (1110nr). i just opened it now and looks like right speaker is not working. what should i do ? -
FYI; you can make custom 'power plans' and save them so all you need to do is click the battery icon to select it when you need it for a specific program. The newer ATI CCC drivers also allow you to create custom 'profiles' (click options tab, top right of CCC panel), a custom profile can even be made to load when you open a specific program so it should automatically use the video card profile you create for a specific program only when it's in use.... Have not actually tried the latter but it seems pretty straight forward in the CCC help info... Doing these should save you several clicks each time you need to run CAD for example....
-
I found it under Control Panel>Device Manager>System>HP Mobile Data Protection Sensor.
If I uninstall it, then I get an entry in the Devices list for 'Unknown Device', but I don't get the hpdskflt error messages on startup any more. -
Can't disable it. Only option is to uninstall it.
I'm wondering if a BIOS update will fix my freezing, but are there any problems that are known on the most recent bios? -
Nice. Auto-switchable graphics... almost behaving like a MBP, only you still have the option to manually switch as you choose (but you also get a screen flash every time you switch, so... pros and cons). I'll give it a shot if/when I get sick of clicking.
