Could you elaborate on what drivers you actually needed to reinstall from the HP website? For the rest, Windows takes care of 'em, right?

I always hibernate my system and while I haven't had a black screen (I don't run auto-switch either) I have had some weird things crop up. Sometimes the auto-fn stops working and I have to hold fn to get brightness etc. Also I have had a strange thing happen sometimes on shutdowns. I will get the HP splash screen for hibernate instead of the HP splash screen for starting up. The press esc to enter startup in the bottom left corner dosen't show up when I start the computer.

When are they going to release the envy 14 with the new touchpad and the return of the radiance screen??

I don't think anyone knows. The new touchpad is coming soon for sure, but we don't have info on the Radiance screen. It seems to me it was too expensive to make and package into a lower-priced Envy 14.

Maybe the new touchpad is coming sooner than expected, since there is a $400 US coupon that can be applied to the 14".

I am very tempted in buying it since I missed out on Bing but still no Radiance option.

Im surpirsed Why would hp offer a $400 coupon on their superhit laptop? Can we blame the absence of radiance?

Brings it in line with prices from Amazon for me. A same specced Envy 14 from HP and tax minus 400 with coupon comes out to be the same price as Amazon normally for me (no tax)

Just picked up my refurbed unit, it seems flawless bar a tiny mark next to the headphone jack. Really happy so far and the Radiance screen looks great.

Will try and fit localized keyboard and then I guess I will make a minimal recovery.

Just saw that. And I just configured an i5-560 with 4 GB and a 256 gig SSD for $1,380 shipped to my door.

If I could get the Radiance on that, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Now I'm wondering if maybe a 14.5" display running at 1366x768 isn't so bad.

Hey i dont know much about the subject but i was thinking is there a way to connect a firewire device to the eSATA connector on the HP Envy.... like an adapter or something.
i know the HP Envy doesnt have firewire connection but eSATA is supposed to be faster right?

Im about to make the recovery discs and try a minimal recovery. Is the intallation much faster from a USB so its worth making a USB recovery disc instead of putting it onto DVD's?

Also, is the whole recovery automated or is it somehow possible to reformat and re-partion the discs as you can during a normal installation?

Btw, if its possible to reformat the discs what about the SWSETUP folder, can this be put onto a DVD or USB or will it only work having SWSETUP on C:?

Managed to swap the US keyboard for a Nordic version last night, all went smooth except the US didnt survive the operation as I managed to tear the backlight cable against a sharp edge. :(

i put mine on a USB stick, it took about 15min also you can put the SWSetup folder anywhere you like. It doesnt really matter. and how did you manage to rip the backlight cable? :S i also switched out my keyboard but there werent any sharp edges anywhere :S... i mean those cables are pretty strong haha

Starcraft 2 has abolutely no lag and beautiful in normal gaming , however should you ever play Nexus War or those battle scene with hundreds and hundreds of units, it will lag significantly, but then even my I7 920 + GTX 480 (destktop card) lags a bit in that scenario. Overall its fast.

Has anybody had issues with not being able to switch graphics cards? For some reason when I click "Power Saving GPU" nothing happens. This tends to be accompanied by the brightness keys not functioning.

Brightness is broken under the latest ATI video drivers. Revert back to an older version to fix that.

The card switching thing happens when you unplug or plug in during standby. restart to fix it.

you probably broke one of the pins under the key... they are very delicate. you could order a replacement key. you could try looking up websites that sell replacement keys on google. i was able to find quiet a few with envy 15 but you probably ave to call and ask about the envy 14. you can try here.

    PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:

It appears that posters, especially new posters, are not using the owners lounge for help with their system but are instead starting new threads for help. That suggests that owners lounge regulars are ignoring their posts or are in some ways intimidating them. What's more, many of their questions have been answered before either on page 1 of this thread or in this thread.

So, if you could, take the time to answer their questions whenever you see them. If they make new threads, point them to the answer especially if the answer is on page 1 of this thread instead of answering their questions in the threads they create which only fosters more thread creation instead of using the owners lounge.

    Thanks.

You mean the noise that the DVD drive makes when you turn the machine on/bring it out of sleep/hibernation? If so, I don't think its possible as it's part of the drives power on sequence... although it shouldn't be ejecting whatever media is in the drive at the time.

So today is the first time I have tried to hook up a mic to the headset port on the side of my laptop. I don't have the port's mic muted, and when I plug in my headset I can see the bars bounce but they stop once it is plugged in all the way. If I try using it partially plugged in, nothing happens their either. When I bought the laptop I re-installed the bloated OEM OS and installed Win 7 Pro, but I have all my drivers including the IDT driver from the driver thread on this forum. I already tried re-installing my driver to no avail.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be or what else I could check, or is my port defective? If so, will HP refuse to work on it since it doesn't have the OEM Win 7 install?

Also I tested my headset and know it works...

    Thanks for any ideas!

Haha yeah it's a bit noisy but there's not much that you can do... believe me, it's a lot quieter than what it is on most slot loading machines like the Dell Studio, you'd swear the thing was about to eat someone alive when you turned on it...

eh, really that noise isn't a cd check so much as a "dvd-drive turning on"

you can disable the bios's cd/dvd check and it still makes that noise.

what's up guys!... I'm back to the forums after a bad experience with a vaio F series, i sold that garbage to buy a good laptop... So before i do my next purchase i want to do some research first... I'm very impressed about the hp envy 14 beats edition laptop, i have an old hp dv2000 that have performed like a champ for 4 years now. I'm studying system engineering so you should know i'm not a common user that only uses a laptop for making a document or playing some games... I want something that could go on with my lifestyle(that's why i sold that fragile vaio)... So the questions:
    1. Should i get an i5 or an i7 laptop? (I have read some issues with the i7 processors so i want to know your opinions).
    2. I want to know about the build quality and the posibilities of receving a laptop with issues and about the wordwide warranty(This is very important to me because i'm from Ecuador and i'm getting the laptop with the help of a friend that lives in the US, and i don't want to get a laptop without support in my country).
    Thanks in advance...

^maybe go back to the default 10.3 drivers? It seems to have the least problems out of all of the others, imo.

Also, I too, would like to know how to disable the cd drive because of that noise...

FWIW, it's most likely in all slot-loading drives. My roommate's MBP makes an identical sound at bootup.

i5=better battery life i7=more horsepower/more heat. I think the build quality is quite good for my Envy 14, but I can't say anything about the Beats Edition. There is a quality condition poll on the first page you could check out. Can't comment on the support for your region.

There may be an eSATA to firewire adapter, but you can get an external HDD case that has an eSATA port on it. eSATA is theoretically much faster than firewire and USB 2.0.

Are you using HP's Mediasmart webcam software, or some other webcam software? Have you checked device manager to see if it is showing up as installed? Mine usually comes on when I start up the webcam software.
