Mine says something about WAN miniport in the systems information too. I do not know what it is or means though.

I have a SSD in my Envy 14 and reinstalled Windows 7 + drivers. In device manager there is a annoying unknown device that is gone after I install "HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection". But I have an SSD so there is no purpose for this program I think?
Is it a problem that I installed it? -
not a problem... but you can uninstall it because its useless..
-
thank you, reading all the posts on the quality thread made me reconsider of getting this laptop... i still can't believe almost all the envy 14 owners have some issue with their laptops... This make me want my vaio F back...

I need someones help pretty badly right now. I am having numerous problems with my ENVY at the moment. My ENVY, more than ever, will randomly crash during everyday tasks. Other times, it won't even make it to the homescreen before it crashes again and restarts. It has gotten to the point where I had to do a system restore yesterday, but problems are still persisting. Sometimes it will start up and it will say there is no bootable device, but then the next restart goes fine. I DO have a warranty for the computer so if I call HP, will I need it, and is there a chance I could get a new computer?
Thanks for the help! -
Exceedingly low chance you will get a new computer on the first service. It usually takes 3 to 5 repair service episodes before they offer you a new computer or refund.

anybody interested in a singapore brand new set hp envy beats?

thanks for trying!

MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
that is weird.
have you done the hdd tests in the bios and that system test menu (hit esc at start, pick system tests/diagnostics or something)
I mean it could be that your windows installation got horribly destroyed by something you did (or something a virus that you don't know about did) or ...I dunno something.
did you ever try installing the ps3 controller motioninjoy drivers? those crashed my envy14 every once in awhile when I turned the wifi on (so I got rid of them...by clean installing since they don't like to be uninstalled since they modify your x21usb.sys file and that crashes things). It did the same thing to my old computer...just with less "crash on turn wifi on" and more "crash on boot" -
Hi All,
I ordered HP Envy 14 with Core i5-560M processor. I would like to know whether i5-560M processor will generate more heat and create heat issues compared to i5-460M processor ?
Does anybody has envy 14 with i5-560M processor ? How is it compared to i5-460M interms of heat ?
Thanks in advance -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
no.
should be about the same as the 460m.
the i7s are what generate a lot more heat since they run at a higher max temperature....'cause well, they're quad cores -
Anyone else got a diagonal raster pattern on their screen?
Its only visible on moving objects, if move a window around or playing a game. -
It sounds like your HDD is broken. Run the HDD test as suggested. If your HDD is the problem, then it's highly unlikely that HP's will replace the whole laptop but just the HDD.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
it took a couple calls for 'em to replace the hdd (to get them to send me the hdd and have me send them back the bad one)
first time was the general number.
second time I used he envy/hdx/firebird/touchsmart # here: Contact HP - Phone assistance
and that worked out. it's US only though -
I used to have Vaio F, and I agree with you, the screen is garbage! I cant believe they released that to the market. It so awful, its make my image of Vaio laptop drop drastically.
I too return my F series and get E14, the only minor issue I have is its making high pitch noise if I use USB/BT but that is not even a E14 issue, more into Intel chip. My old acer have this sound also. E14 is a MUCH better laptop. I was thinking getting the E17 at first, but that was too big to carry around..so I'm planning to use an external monitor with my E14 over miniDisplay port to DVI. Thinking of getting Dell Ultrasharp.
Where did you get that info?about most E14 owners have issues? That is completely wrong, there is a pool here that.
Come on dude, you drop your E14, I think you have a hardware failure. -
Hello everyone,
Over the past three days I have been experiencing a very annoying and quite troubling issue.
During normal use my WiFi periodically disconnects for no apparent reason.
I have never had any problems whatsoever in this specific regard after over a month of using my Envy prior to the last three days. I have the latest WiFi drivers installed, have had them installed since my clean format over a month ago, and have not altered anything in that regard since. I have been using the same modem for over a month with the exact same settings and have never had this problem before.
But now, suddenly, seemingly out of the blue I am getting disconnected from the WiFi many times each day for no apparent reason.
Following the suggestions from a post that I found from searching the forums I have unchecked the box for "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" under the Power Management tab in Device Manager. I didn't expect doing this to resolve anything because I always have my Envy plugged in and have never disabled that box previously, and as expected the problem remains. I also uninstalled the up-to-date Intel WiFi driver that I have been using for over a month, restarted, reinstalled the drivers, and restarted again. This too did not resolve the issue.
One questionable part of the driver uninstall/reinstall process is that after I uninstalled the driver and restarted, Windows automatically discovered the device and installed it. When I then checked in Device Manager it indicated that I already had the most up-to-date driver installed. I ran the installer again anyway, but this itself spooked me a little bit because I wasn't expecting Windows to (I assume) automatically install the driver I had downloaded a month ago and stored all by itself.
Either way, I am still experiencing the issue as I expected seeing as I hadn't changed anything on my Envy which had been working flawlessly in this regard with all of the same configurations that were present when this began three days ago.
I apologize if this post sounds aggressive or overly worried, I'm really bothered by this because my sister owned a Pavilion a few years back that ended up completely frying and the first sign of problems was her WiFi going haywire.
Any help would be most appreciated! Thanks as always! -
Sometimes some programs messed things up, like windows update...some patch might create some issue. You wanted to track back what kind of software you installed before this happen, worst case scenario is to recover the C drive from the backup if you have it or do a clean install again if you dont. Did you try to restart the router/modem and see if that have any effect?
-
Thanks so much for the tip on the converter for the headset port and my mic. I ordered the part. Another question is anyone knows: is it normal for the keyboard to flex all around the K key? If so, does HP recognize this as an issue? I have their 2 year extended service plan. I'd love to get that issue fixed.
-
Thanks for the reply.
The only software that I have installed since this issue started to occur has been Microsoft Office and an update to my IDT High Definition Audio Codec and both of those installs took place over a full day prior to the issue beginning. The only Windows updates which have taken place anywhere near the time when the issue began were all for Microsoft Office. I am doubtful that these would cause a problem with my WiFi connectivity?
I have not as of yet taken any steps regarding resetting my modem, because every time that this has happened I have gone to check the WiFi status of another computer in the house and this computer was working normally. I will try that now nevertheless.
In the mean time, any other suggestions on what might be the issue and/or what I can do about it?
After everything I try I find myself constantly watching the WiFi connection icon waiting to see if the connection is going to drop and it is driving me crazy. It is random, so it may be fine for hours at a time and then go down. Thus I can't ever check to see if it's "fixed" I just have to hope that it will never happen again.
Thanks again! -
Yes that laptop was very bad, everybody told me to think twice after getting a vaio, but i made the opposite... Beacause of that i'm trying to do all the research for my next laptop, but looks like it won't be te envy 14 either, i'm very concerned about the issues and problem that some users reported...
-
Keep in mind that the ratio of users with problems who post about their experiences compared to users who are perfectly satisfied are like 15:1; it's just human nature and for the most part those who arent having any issues and are enjoying their notebooks don't always tend to write about it.
I, for one, absolutely love my Envy 14 and haven't run in to any of the issues that have been pointed out.
1. The build quality is excellent with no flex on the chassis, and the bottom panels don't move or rattle.
2 The screen is very good in terms of brightness, viewing angles, and resolution (I think 1366x768 on a 14.5 inch display is perfect, 1600x900 would be too hard to read without cranking up the DPI and you'll get better gaming performance at native resolution this way as well)
3. I haven't encountered any CPU whine.
4. The keyboard is a joy to type on, very smooth keys with excellent feedback; and no issues with keyboard flex in any areas during normal usage.
5. No issues with cooling at all, in fact the machine runs much cooler compared to a Pavilion DV6 with similar specifications - maximum temperatures that I've encountered for the CPU and GPU were 86*C and 69*C respectively, whereas the Pavilion performing the same tasks reaches around 94*C and 72*C, respectively (these temperatures were recorded using HWMonitor while running Windows Media Player, IntelBurnTest on Maximum Stress and FurMark with Displacement Mapping, PostFX, Xtreme Burn Mode, and MSAA 8x turned on running at a full screen 1366x768 resolution for an hour and a half non-stop). The fans aren't as high pitched compared to the Pavilion's fan running at maximum speed, either.
6. Excellent audio reproduction from the line out jack, very clear with bass in just the right places and quite loud compared to the audio quality from the Pavilion at the same volume settings playing the same track. The built in speakers are better than the Pavilions, but do lack a bit of bass although they remain very clear for notebook size speakers - however, this is to be expected on a unit that doesn't seem to have a subwoofer and I wouldn't say that it holds the Envy back in any way.
7. The machine runs like a champ, it boots up quickly on a clean installation of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and handles anything you throw at it without skipping a beat.
All in all, I'm very impressed with the Envy 14 and would highly recommend this notebook to anyone who wants a well rounded blend of performance and portability inside of a chassis that will hold up against every day usage.
Take the complaints with a grain of salt... remember, you do have a return period to decide whether the machine would be a good fit for you and if it has any issues you could always send it back if need be. -
I completely agree..E14 one of the best laptop you can buy out there...not to mention, the most sexy too, the only windows based laptop that have metal chassis.

I might have some good news
A Danish vendor has confirmation that the Envy14-1090eo (radiance screen model) will come back in stock 12/10.
As its completely sold out at the moment, this must mean that HP has found a new supplier of the radiance screen and that it will be available sometime in December. -
Is it correct that I cant disable the touchpad when I use Envytouchpach from Reils?
I have to disable the Tab to click in Synaptics otherwise I can't use single click, but after disabling the option to disable/enable the touchpad doesn't work anymore.. -
AdvancedCorpseTumor Notebook Enthusiast
Since i keep having all sorts of minor issues with hibernation (like the screen resuming in black with a freezed mouse cursor) Im going to disable it.
Now i also noticed that im getting static in my usb soundcard after i resume from hibernate, i have to unplug/replug to get it working fine again. :/
Temporary solution: Turn off hibernate (for those looking for answers to this issue) If someone has a better solution ill take suggestions. -
You are correct. When using Reil's app as you describe, the tap to disable/enable the touchpad feature is disabled. I've been running his app for a while and I think the benefits of what his app provides outweigh the disadvantage of not being able to tap to disable the touchpad. I'm also running Paradisoft's touchpad locker, which disables the touchpad while I'm typing. The two apps seem to work well together.

Unfortunatey even after resetting my modem and once again uninstalling and reinstalling my Intel WiFi drivers I am still experiencing random periodic connection drops.
I am at a complete loss. I have done still more research trying to find what the problem could be and have visited multiple other sites and forums finding multiple people who have experienced a similar issue but no solid results.
I am baffled as to why my connection would suddenly start dropping multiple times a day completely removed from what kind of load it is under when I have not changed anything relating to my WiFi for over a month and it had never dropped signal before.
Anyone have some additional suggestions?
If not, does anyone know if/where I might be able to monitor my system in Administrative Tools (or elsewhere for that matter, I'm just assuming that it is somewhere in there) in an effort to find a correlation (if there is one) between something going haywire on my system and the signal drops? I have filtered through Event Viewer a bit but in honesty I am not nearly as familiar with deciphering that information as I once was. -
Oh here you are! You might not remember but you gave me some tips on how to use the HP Business Outlet to try to find a good Envy14+Radiance combo... Long story short THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
I just purchased my baby and I'm awaiting it patiently. Wow, what a laptop hunt! But it was worth the research and the wait. Now I only pray customs don't leech on me too much. Otherwise I'll just resort to asking someone to bring it instead.
Thanks again. -
If you have other computers and it was working good and you did everything regarding the your wifi on the computer and modem, that leave some few possibility:
1)You are too far from the modem.
2)Your might have brick construction or fluscerent light nearby.
3)Your modem/router is not liking your N adapter on your E14.
4)Your E14 adapter is defective.
Hope that helps. -
Thanks for the reply.
I am using my Envy in the exact same location in which I was using it prior to this issue occurring, about 20 feet from the modem with Excellent connectivity and no brick or flourescent lights in the vicinity.
My Envy has until the last few days always worked perfectly fine with my modem.
So I guess that sadly leaves only the last option.
Thankfully at the moment I don't absolutely need flawless WiFi connectivity and the problem is not so intrusive that it is constantly causing me to lose signal. So for now I will live with it and then perhaps try some more radical software and driver changes when I get the time. Hopefully it just doesn't get progressively worse until I can do all of that. Even more hopefully I can eventually resolve the issue myself without having to send my Envy to HP.
As a side note, I have noticed recently that someone near me has set up a new WiFi connection that seems to sporadically change from a secured to unsecured network. The signal is weak and I have never tried to connect to this network before, but is there any possibility that its status could be messing with my Envy somehow? I know it's a long shot, and I haven't seen any direct correlation between this other network changing and my signal dropping, but I did notice it. -
There's a WiFi Gadget you can run to continuously monitor the strength of your WiFi signal and other networks around you. You might want to look at what channels the strongest adjacent networks are transmitting on and set your router to use a channel as far away from there as possible, e.g. if your neighbor with the strongest signal is using channel 1, then set your router to use channel 11. Cordless phone use can interfere with WiFi signals (even if it's in the next building), so changing channels may help with that. Also, see if your router has an option to adjust the power level of its transmit signal, and check that your PC is operating at its maximum power level: Control Panel>Device Manager>Network adapters>right-click on your WiFi adapter>Properties>Advanced>Transmit Power>set to 5. Highest.
Also, do you have the latest WiFi driver? See the NBR Drivers and Software Forum -
Thanks for the reply belltown.
I do currently have the latest drivers installed, and have checked my modem and Envy WiFi settings and both have their transmissions settings set to the maximum.
I will certainly look into your suggestions about the transmission channel and will research how to do all of that when I get the time. But if it isn't too complicated or time consuming could you (or someone) give me a quick rundown on the repercussions (if any) of changing channels on the computers that are all connected to the same WiFi network?
The channel setting for my modem is currently "Auto Detect" (default) and three different laptops use it on a regular basis, so I am a bit apprehensive to start messing with modem settings on the fly without previous knowledge of what all happens in doing so. Any information you (or someone) could provide would save me a lot of time in digging online for manuals and explanations, but again, if it is too involved don't waste your time. I'll surely get around to it eventually. -
There shouldn't be any repercussions when changing the channel that the router broadcasts on. All your laptops should automatically receive on whatever channel the router is broadcasting on. There is no need to change any of your laptops' configurations when you change the channel on the router.
-
Alright, awesome! Thanks a lot for that. That information alone will save me what would have been some substantial time researching. I will have to try that.
As an update, I took a little bit of time to refamiliarize myself with Event Viewer and found a few things which I will be keeping an eye on in respect to when my connection drops:
Under Windows Logs -> System in Event Viewer the following errors listed as "Information" seem to coincide with the most recent time this happened, listed in order.
1.
The TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service was successfully sent a stop control.
The reason specified was: 0x40030011 [Operating System: Network Connectivity (Planned)]
Comment: None
2.
The TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service entered the stopped state.
There are seemingly corresponding logs of "Information" messages for WLAN-Autoconfig, Dhcp-Client, and DHCPv6-Client around the same time in their respective files under Applications and Services Logs -> Microsoft -> Windows in Event Viewer.
There may be other corresponding messages in other specific application/service logs, but I haven't done an exhaustive check, I only looked at those which seemed reasonable to investigate.
In Googling some of these errors I have found others with similar problems and there seems to be some consensus that it is an as of yet unaddressed Windows problem. But I haven't found enough information to convince me of anything yet. Either way, all of it is a bit strange and at the moment over my head.
Any further suggestions or insight into these messages I am seeing in Event Viewer would be much appreciated. I'll be keeping an eye on these logs from now on when I get disconnected and will research their meaning and implications more fully when I have the time. -
Having trouble with my Radiance screen and wonder if anyone else noticed a diagonal pattern? It pretty much consists of very thin lines at a 45 degree angle. Almost like a moire pattern but with straight lines.
On a static display its perfect but as soon as something moves on the screen the lines turn up and kind of blur the object. Not much of a problem when moving a window around but watching a video or playing a game makes pretty much the whole screen covered with these lines ie quite a blurry experience that seems all but radiant.
I also noticed that the lines turn up if waggle the screen itself so perhaps its some kind of electrical issue or does the screen have a filter?
Will try and see if I can catch it on video tomorrow but I doubt it will shop up well as lines are very thin. -
I haven't noticed this happening. Does it happen no matter which graphics option you're using? Maybe change resolutions to see if it's happening on different resolutions. If it happens on both graphics chips, and any resolution, it could be a bad screen or a screen that's about to go bad.
-
Anyone have any insight on the flex? If HP doesn't recognize it as a repairable issue, is there a way to repair it yourself?
-
Has anyone had a problem with the web cam? I cant find any solutions for it. Every time I start it up it says I need to turn it on. I reinstalled the drivers and I don't know what to do. =/
-
Alrighty, another update. I have been watching for the results to come through Event Viewer when my WiFi goes down and it just happened a little bit ago. I've only included a skeleton of the errors for ease of reading and so that it doesn't take up too much space. I also left off the messages near the end of the sequence when it seemed that it was just going through the reconnect process.
Anyway here is the sequence that takes place when my WiFi goes down:

I don't know if this information is actually useful or helpful in any way, but it does seem to indicate that WLAN-AutoConfig kicks off the whole process. Any ideas?
I have since changed the channel for my WiFi from "Auto Detect" to "11" (the furthest from that of my neighbors, both of which are "1") as suggested by belltown. We'll see if that makes a difference. I just wanted to get some definite documentation of the error in Event Viewer before I changed anything else. -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
it seems like some sorta mixture between your wireless, your router, and the security your using is breaking everything.
I dunno. downside is you can't use wireless n speeds without security (I think) -
Can you bring your E14 to friends house or starbucks, etc and see if this happen on those kind of scenario?
-
Yes, it certainly does seem to be a nasty stew of errors, although it seems to me that whatever WLAN-AutoConfig is doing and its ultimate failure leads to all of the subsequent messages in a predefined sequence of automated shutdown given certain conditions. This is all speculation of course, but given the series of events it seems reasonable.
I could potentially try this, but the problem is that the disconnect is so sporadic that I have no reliable way of testing it. I might have to wait for a few hours or longer for it to happen.
Regardless, this is my current plan of attack:
I most recently changed the channel for my modem as suggested by belltown and the connection has not dropped since, but it hasn't been that long. I will keep an eye on it and if it drops again I will then...
Change the "Roaming Aggressiveness" under the "Advanced" tab for the device in Device Manager from "3. Medium" to "1. Lowest." I am thinking that this may make a difference given my neighbors and their crazy sometimes secured sometimes unsecured network. Although the signal strength for that connection is low and the strength for mine is high I suspect that perhaps if their connection strength spikes when unsecured around the same time that mine takes a dip my WiFi may go haywire. Just speculation however. If the problem still persists after that I will...
Change the "Subsequent failures" option under the "Recovery" tab for "WLAN AutoConfig Properties" in Services from "Take No Action" to "Restart the Service." Currently the options for "First failure" and "Second failure" are both set to "Restart the Service." Given the sequence of events that I posted from Event Viewer and a brief post that I found on these forums from ages ago that lead me in this direction, I am thinking that if I never allow "Take No Action" to be the result, perhaps WLAN AutoConfig will never fail and thus the WiFi will never drop.
Again all of this is speculation, and I am simply doing one thing at a time in an effort to pinpoint the issue.
As usual any ideas or suggestions of any kind would be most appreciated! -
Hey wilsgrant,
I feel bad for dominating the past couple pages of the Owners Lounge, so although I don't know much about your issue I figured it only courteous to respond in some way. I too have some flex in my keyboard although mostly on the upper right-hand side around the O, P, 0, - area. It is slight, however, and I only ever notice it if I am looking at the keyboard and press down firmly. I know that others have voiced issues concerning keyboard flex in the past but from what I've seen the consensus seems to have been that it is minimal and generally not noticeable in day to day use. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. -
Hey Uh-mazing,
I personally have not had any problems with my webcam. It has worked both before and after my clean install of Windows with no issues. Could you explain a little more thoroughly what your exact issue is? How are you trying to start it up? Are you trying to use the webcam through Skype or some other program that uses a webcam? I can't give you any advice concerning the HP webcam software because I don't currently have it installed, but perhaps if you give a bit more detail on exactly what you're trying to do and what isn't working I or someone else can provide some insight. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. -
There are some helpful people on the NBR forums, but if you don't have any luck solving your problem here, I've found dslreports.com to be an excellent resource when it comes to any kind of networking issues.
-
Thanks belltown. If I can't get to the bottom of the issue here in the Owner's Lounge I was thinking of taking it to the networking section of these forums. But I will certainly consider dslreports as well if a definitive solution continues to elude me.
-
anybody have any suggestions/fixes for the cpu whine?
i've attempted the things listed on the first page of this thread and i've been unsuccessful in my attempts... -
Can anyone help me????
-
What webcam software are you trying to use?
-
Maybe check and see if your router has some updated firmware. Longshot, but worth checking out.
