the envy can use ddr3 1333 but it will downclock it to 1066
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
that being said, HP just sticks DDR3 1333 in the envy regardless of the processor.
-
the price difference of DDR3 1333 and DDR3 1066 is minimal, sometimes the 1333 is actually more cheaper and they are backward compatible. So HP just put 1333 on it. As far as upgrade, check your memory stick using a program or just remove it physically, identical match is the way to go. Got mine for about 70-80 bucks (4GB Samsung).
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
yeah. you want to use a similar/same stick as the one that's already in the computer.
so check it out.
same brand at least. -
Is their anyway to get sound through a HDMI cable? my ps3 can do it . I connected it to my tv, so any help would be appreciated
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
it should work.
check your IDT control panel/beats control panel while the hdmi cable is plugged in to your tv. It should have an option to set it as default playback device (it will only be available when you plug the hdmi cable in) -
hey guys any news about the serial numbers for the adobe photoshop?? no luck here , cannot find it.. need a little help.
-
thanks and were can I get the other cord to connect it to a monitor/tv not the HDMI one can't remember what it's called
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
uh...dunno. hdmi should be audio and video.
the other type of cable is a minidisplay cable and I don't know much about them -
The sound through HDMI cable is automatic, I connected my HDMI to my TV and it just work. The driver is ATI through, not IDT. If it doesnt worked out, you must have issue with the HDMI audio driver.
I dont think you would be able to install it by yourself, if you wanted it back...you have to use factory restore. Cant do it through clean install due to copyright issue. -
thanks for responding. i guess i don't need to install it then.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
yeah the hdmi audio driver comes from the video drivers but the settings and stuff are controlled from the sound properties (both idt/beats and then windows sound settings stuff when the cable is plugged in only)

I see that, in Canada, Future Shop has the 14-1050ca with radiance screen reduced back down to $1299.99. I think that just about every FS and Best Buy in Canada has them in stock. Best Buy shows $1499.99, but they'll price match FS, which is owned by BB.

Hi All,
Does anybody know whether $400 off envy coupon will come back again before christmas ?. How much chance is there to see envy $400 off again?
Thanks in advance -
So.....i have an idea....let's put the 16x9 resolution truely to the test...
Can someone add 1366x768 to their desktop resolutions? Then take a shot of it, and take another shot at 1600x900....
It'd put a rest to my worries (and maybe other peoples worries) -
taking a picture and looking at it will do the actual quality no justice. you may see a slight difference in brightness, but you need to see the radiance in person to see how good it looks. its pretty much the deciding factor that made me buy the envy.
-
I dont care about the radiance, i'm more worried about screen real estate. And if the envy didnt have the radiance back then...which laptop would you have bought? I'm still uncertain.
-
Ok, so I've had one BSOD, a No Boot Device Detected message, filesystem corruption, and events listed in Event Viewer about the hard drive being abnormally slow and needing to contact my hardware vendor for further assistance in diagnosing the problem. The Event Viewer messages have persisted over 2 installs. All the HP/BIOS software says the HDD is good to go. I am currently backing up all my data onto an external HDD. What should I do? It passes the tests, yet Windows seems to insist on it's faultiness.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
ask the hardware forum. they might be able to help you out. 'cause I'm kinda "that sounds bad but...it may be a connector to the hdd bad not "hdd dying" bad
but I really don't know. -
Just wanted to share some of my initial impressions of my awesome new laptop:
Here's my laptop specs for reference:
Just played my first game (Bioshock 2) with my new Envy 14 and I was blown away. I've only been playing with a 512 meg video card in my desktop for the past 2 years and the envy's blows it away. Can't wait to tackle other great games.
I have noticed that the fan is on pretty much all the time and that it does get a bit warm (I have the core i7). I've had it on my lap for the last 30 minutes playing Bioshock 2 and the heat was not excessive. In fact, it felt kind of good in my cold living room.
The battery life is abysmal as I anticipated. Doesn't concern me since I'll be near an outlet 99% of the time.
It definitely has some heft to it and i can't image adding a slice battery to increase the weight. Maybe sometime down the line when they're a little cheaper.
The brightview display is by no means awesome but it's passable. The colors certainly don't pop as they probably do on the radiance and the blacks are certainly not great. The resolution doesn't bother me much since I'm coming from a netbook as my primary laptop. In fact, I'm still adjusting to having so much screen to play with! I will most certainly be on the lookout for a radiance display to upgrade to when/if they start to show up again.
The bloatware on this thing was insane. Once I cleared it all out it has been running a lot smoother as others have noted.
The keyboard is pleasant to type on and the backlighting is very welcomed (although the brightness fluctuates between keys)
So far I am loving this thing. Build quality is solid, games run smooth on high settings, and it's fast!
My main gripe so far is the trackpad which I seem to have remedied with the reil fix. Once I found that application it has been working a lot better although I still prefer an external mouse.
I have to say, I feel like I ripped HP off getting this thing for 850 out the door. Hopefully everything holds up over time.
Cheers! -

Just because I see it being brought up again:
I just purchased a refurb E14 from eBay with Radiance.
Absolute BEST screen I've ever seen on a laptop. I like it better than the RGB screen on my old m17x, and that's saying a lot.
The vibrancy of the colors is astounding. -
SaosinEngaged Notebook Evangelist
And I'm giving up my m11x because there's simply no going back.
The Radiance screen is so good I look at the screen on my m11x and my eyes bleed.
Off to eBay with you! (And I loved that little beast) -
I get it about the radiance display; it's amazing, colors are vibrant, contrast....etc
I just want to see how big the difference is between 1366x768 and 1600x900. -
Take a screenshot of your desktop, then resize it to 1160x650 and put it in the upper left corner. The part of the screen that isn't covered by the image, is what people with 1600x900 can use and you can't.
-
The link to the user manual on the first post has passed over to the other side. Could someone please repost it?
-
SaosinEngaged Notebook Evangelist
Fairly big. I can't imagine going from Radiance resolution down to 1366x768. Would seem very sub-optimal.
Keep in mind, only my opinion guys. I'm sure many of you have the lower res screen and love it. Again, in MY opinion, Radiance is more than worth it.
The resolution on the screen fits the laptop PERFECTLY. -
I just want to see how small/big and clear everything will be....i'm coming from a 15.6" @ 1366x768..
Does anyone know where i can find the envy with the radiance display for 1000~? -
SaosinEngaged Notebook Evangelist
Here's a pic of my desktop.

That's what I told Timeline X owners. If you're not gaming, it's not about the specs only.
-
Alright, so i saw a youtube video of the beats edition and i can confidently say, this screen looks perfect
Sure, it's not 1600x900 but the way you guys were describing it made me worry.
But then again....i can easily get the xps 15 with the B+RGB LED screen for the same price........but it is quite larger... -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
in general screen's fine for both versions.
radiance is better (after taking into account the color profile screw up) but I mean. that doesn't mean the brightview is bad, at all. -
Is there a thread/post on how to correct/change the default color profile?
-
Folks act like Brightview is insufferable. Are there any other 14" laptops with the 1600 x 900 res anyway?
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
-
Thank you very much.
-
The Sony z series, which is like 13", has a 1920x1200. but i get your point. still, the envy's are "top of the line" notebooks and should be judged as such.
-
Hi, just wondering, are you using the default software for battery monitoring or you installed something else? It looks nice.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
that looks like battery bar which...well...the estimates it makes can vary wildly but hey, the % is on target
-
Hi envy owners,
Does Envy 14 Beats edition is better than regular envy 14 ?. I know beats edition costs little bit extra for same configuration.
1) Does beats edition screen better than regular 14 ?
2) Does beats edition audio is good than regular 14 ?
If you are willing to pay extra money does envy 14 beats is worth ?
Hi envy beats owners
Any comments ?
Thanks in advance -
Slightly off topic, but I might be replacing my HDD with the Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid HDD and i have a question. according to the specs....
Capacity 500GB, 320GB, 250GB
Solid State Memory, SLC NAND (GB): 4
Interface: SATA 3Gb/s NCQ
So is there only 4gb of SSD on the drive? does this mean i need to cram my OS and programs all on that much measly space? -
Anyone? I'm looking for something more quantifiable.
-
I like that battery monitoring software, too. That screen saver is also very nice.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
what it means is that it's got a slc nand that it loads stuff in on its own with some sorta algorithm to speed up the parts of your computer you use the most (OS mainly, couple programs you use a lot, etc) -
Does anyone have the Manual for replacing the screen in on the Envy 14. Is it a replacement of the screen or the entire lid if you are going to change the screen?
Thank you in advance. -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
maintenance guide on the first page says:
so all of that.
pretty much you have to remove the top cover (keyboard, stuff keyboard and trackpad are on, that thing) and the wireless stuff first.
and then you take the entire lid off. -
So I went to the HP United States parts store to see the availability of the Radiance screen tonight. I put in the search for part number 608366-011. It came back with the part SPS-DSPLY 14.5 LED HDAG WVA WBC MIC FG. It shows it in stock when I go to check out with a price of $338.20. It shows that a refurbished screen (608366-001) is priced at $256.50.
So I just did a chat with HP parts:
Chat InformationWelcome to the HP Parts Store Pre- Sales Chat Service.
Chat InformationYou are connected with HP's Parts Store Pre- Sales Chat Service. My name is 'Mary'. How may I help you today?
you: Is part # 608366-001 available as refurbished or new?
Mary: Hello! Welcome to the HP Part Store Chat Support. Please tell me the nature of your visit today.
Mary: Glad to help you today.
Mary: Let me check, one moment please.
Mary: Thanks for waiting online
you: sure
Mary: Both new and refurbished parts are available
you: at a price of 338.20 for new and 256.50 for refurbished?
Mary: Yes, you are right
you: Thank you very much
So does this mean that the Radiance screen is now back in stock - apparently, and can I put one in my Envy 14 (and how hard would it be and are there any problems with installing it and booting back up fully functioning) which is supposed to be delivered on Tuesday? -
Some rumors say it will be coming back in December, but i am skeptical. what you see in the parts store are the last few spare replacements SOLELY for people who already had a radiance screen. this is what i was told up at case management. -
So this display would only work for someone who already has a radiance? I don't see how it matters if you already had one or not. I am thinking of buying the refurb myself but I only have the brightview display. I guess I could order it and see for myself.
-
What I did not post and was the end of our chat (which was emailed to me) was:
Mary: You are welcome.
Mary: May I be of any further help to you? Would you like to purchase this part?
you: Are you sure that I could purchase this part right now without restriction?
Mary: Yes you may, would you like me to help you with your order?
you: I will think about it - thank you very much
Mary: Thank you for chatting with me.
Mary: I hope you are completely satisfied with my service.
Mary: It was a pleasure to help you. If you would not mind taking a moment to complete the exit survey by clicking the "End chat" button, I would personally be grateful for your positive feedback. Take care and bye. -
I too am thinking about buying this part this morning, but the new one not the refurbished part. My only question is within the Service manual I have from Sept. '10 to seems to indicate that the lid containing the screen and "display panel cable, webcam/microphone module and cable, 2 WLAN antenna cables and transceivers, and 2 WWAN antenna cables and
transceivers" would be within this part. Is this the case and I would have to take the lid off and replace it with the purchased lid - reboot and I am good to go?
