Install the driver from HP's website and it will have both covered.
-
also, how long does a clean install usually take?
-
Windows 7 install takes around 30 minutes. The rest depends on how many programs you install and how much you configure it.
-
Hey guys,
problem with my E14. It's acting up. Even with just one browser window open, I'm seeing my cpu usage shoot up. It starts lagging like crazy when trying to scroll down a simple webpage. What the heck? My switchable graphics hotkeys don't seem to work anymore even after reboots. Just stays at ATI's GPU.
Ok, WTH. I used revo uninstaller to get rid of a corrupted copy of office 2010 (which I'm STIL having problems with) and now I can't even uninstall programs anymore. I go to control and click on "uninstall a program" but get nothing! -
clean install be too much to do?
-
It's a real hassle. I went through a lot of trouble to make sure all my drivers were working. I'm not 100% confident I have all the drivers. On top of that, class is starting in the morning tomorrow.
And MS2010 is acting crappy and won't let me reinstall after I had to use Revouninstaller to remove it.
NOT my day. -
Dammit, that's it. No choice. I'm reburning Win7(lost my clean install copy) and reinstalling the basic drivers and Office 2010. I need my OneNote and I can't be feeling lost day 1 of class.
-
Same here.
Btw I'm about to do a clean install of my envy 14...will it be a big hassle for the drivers?!
I thought it was a simple process
-
Nah. Just go to page one and install the drivers there.
It's interesting that my GPU drivers started working after the 3rd reboot. And some file removals. Must've been a fluke. Now my E14 is humming along quietly and coolly. But Win7 needs removal and MS2010 needs a reinstallation sans the installation bugs. Oh, and my audio has died for no apparent reason. It's ticking me off.
I'll probably be a bit sleepy tomorrow, but it'll be that way on and off week one. Still adjusting to post-break schedule. -
I totally feel you. I had my microsoft office not work right before an exam and paper day.
I pray that things work out for you buddy. -
I'll be satisfied as long as I don't have to send my Envy in (again) for warranty support. HP's the worst. Period. -
To treat the keyboard after sticky juice makes the keys sticky, did you prop up the entire keyboard or just those few keys?!
-
I got an Envy 14 beats edition with i5-580m, 4gb 1 DIMM, and everything else standard with the 8 cell plus the slim fit slice battery for a total of about $1030 including tax..without tax it would be like $980..good deal?
-
Could anyone please tell me about the newest ATI switchable graphics drivers/software? I think someone said they disabled GPU acceleration? Does this mean the GPU won't be used to accelerate webpage scrolling especially when there's flash? How about youtube vids?
Thanks in advance. My switchable graphics (1st gen) aren't working as well as they did pre-clean install. -
I'd say! How'd you manage that?
-
OK, I had my envy for almost 5 or 6 months now and my screen/keyboard is getting very dusty. Anyone know what's the best way to clean the screen and clean off the keyboard?
-
$1030 is warm, but $980 is where it starts sizzling. Before the double cashback bonanza, mine was $1,280 after taxes back around Julyish. Even though laptops aren't exactly Hondas, the thin/light/performance/premium segment doesn't have too many competitors, so my verdict is that's a great deal. Go for it, and if you're feeling generous, share with others here how you got that price. -
basically i got it configured to $1300 then used $300 off coupon to make it $1000, then there was a $500 off coupon a few days later so i complained to HP and they gave me $100 credit. Then i got a slice battery from the parts store cuz its $150 there. Now im at $1050. Then i wanted to return it to get a dell xps but the rma dept. Said theyll give me $100 credit if i keep it, so i got it down to $950, then ordered a notebook sleeve which makes it $980 total spent before tax. All these coupons are expired now so i guess i got lucky with this price..im still considering returning it to get a vaio S but if u guys think i got a good deal then ill keep it,$1280 is great since u got the radiance..i would pay an extra $200 for it

Compressed air on the keyboard should be good for getting rid of dust in between the keys.
As for the screen and the laptop casing in general, use a microfiber cloth to avoid scratching the glass and metal. -
Anyone notice a graphical glitch in Outlook 2010 64 bit near the top ribbon bar. Seems when I launch Outlook everything looks great, but when I actually click on a outlook folder the ribbon at the top overlays the original outlook ribbon causing a glitch. When you hover over the tool bar (File, Folder, View, etc.) the pop up highlight changes that portion of the ribbon. Hope that all makes sense. Kind of similar to when a computer locks up and the window you just closed overlaps an image. I read somewhere it could be a ATI driver issue. Just curious if anyone else was seeing this. Guess the easiest thing is to re-install Office.
-
Let me rephrase my previous question open to anyone who knows.
My roomate spilled juice (mango) on my keyboard so my left windows and shift key make a crunchy noise when pressed (probably due to the residue sugar?).
Anyhow, to clean the keyboard, do I have to remove the entire keyboard or just the particular keys that have a problem?
And what do I use to clean it?
Thanks so much! -
Update:
Apparently it was the Envy Theme that was causing my issues. Went back to Std Aero Theme and all is well again... -
Oh no, it was $1,280 before the cashback bonanza. Original cashback should've been only been roughly $350, but I ended up getting $700 back.
Plus you have to consider your processor got a nice upgrade.
EDIT: Also, don't forget the Radiance compared to the current 1366x768 display only gets you higher pixel density. I'm told brightness and color reproduction levels are nearly identical (Go HP for finding a good replacement?). -
What was the cashback bonanza?
-
no idea, but I'm pretty sad I missed it
-
The cashback bonanza was an incident in which Microsoft accidentally (or not?) doubled the cashback reward for those of us who bought an Envy. I recall my friend who bought an Envy 15 several months before the rest of us getting double cashback too.
-
I bought my envy back in august....I got my bing cashback check but if I did get the bonanza...was I supposed to get another check?
-
Not sure if supposed to. Guess not everyone got their CB doubled.
-
just curious...has anyone completed a minimized image recovery and noticed an increase in temperature on your cores? seems like mine are now running about 10-20 degrees (celsius) higher than they were with all the factory installed bloatware...
any ideas on how to remedy this? -
Hi!
I have the HP Envy 14t-1000 CTO notebook with switchable graphics and decided that the Intel HD graphics might suit me well since I am not much of a gamer. I enabled the Intel HD Graphics under "Configure switchable graphics" and found that the HDMI output no longer works. When I connect the HDMI cable from my notebook to my TV, it says something about this feature not being supported. I know Intel HD graphics supports this capability, so how do I enable it? -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
you can't, not with the envy 14.
the hdmi only works while the ati gpu is turned on (it also uses ati hdmi sound drivers so yeah...it's definitely ati only) -
That is correct. I don't have the link or page #, but off the top of my head, I recall this was confirmed a couple of times in the past.
I personally think this is a bit ghetto. It's already bad enough HP (allegedly) gimped down GPU hardware acceleration in the more recent GPU driver updates. This is one of the reasons I'm still using the 1st generation drivers. -
Hey guys, I just did a clean install of my envy 14 and there are a few issues:
1) the minimizing opening of windows is jerky, as if it lacked drivers but I installed the drivers fine from HP's site.
2) The BIOS flashing tool is consistently completely freezing my computer.
Once I click start, it freezes my computer and I cannot click okay to start the process.
3) Sounds are weird. I installed the sound drivers but windows does not make the sounds I know its supposed to make...
This is a fresh install with almost nothing but drivers done to it. -
the integrated graphics support hdmi out but hp set it up in a way so it can only be used with the ati..same goes for intel widi, it has all the hardware to support it, but for some reason hp disabled it
-
Tried flashing BIOS once couple of nights ago and got a freeze, will try again tonight.
-
I just got my Envy 14 1110nr from Amazon. After 30 mins I called up Amazon and told them that I wanted to return it. The clickpad makes wierd sound when i tap it. The front bezel of the laptop has a gap on the right side where it does not cleanly meet the palmrest. A metallic plate at the bottom of the machine is loose and makes a clicking sound when the laptop is picked up or kept down.
I have ordered an HP Envy 14 1111nr from Microsoft Store instead. I have also opted for the expensive but bloat free Signature Image on the laptop.
Hoping for better luck this time.
P.S. - There are 3 areas in which this machine surely beats current MacBook Pros: 1. Heat Management 2. Keyboard feel 3. Keyboard Backlight. -
you forgot to add peformance and price.
-
Anyone here have the Accidental Damage Protection actually put it to some use yet? As I had posted before, the metal casing on the right corner of the base is damaged, and the screen is broken.
My question for those who have ADP is did you get your laptop repaired or replaced? Also, could you include how bad the damage was?
A case manager will be calling me in a couple days...and I am really hoping to persuade him/her to replace it with the Beats Edition since I know they will not be able to replace my Radiance Screen.
Thank you all for your replies, I really appreciate it.
Kangu -
Why not buy it from Microsoft for $799? And is amazon allowing you to returning it without the restocking fee? If they are, can you tell me what reasons you gave them and how you persuaded them to waive that fee. (If possible, I'm trying to return my Amazon Envy 14 for the Microsoft one :/ ...
Oh and some very minor gripes I have after using the Envy for a few days:
It's louder than I thought it would be even when it's completely idle and the 5650 turned off.
It can get a bit warm near the heat vent area even when I'm just doing light tasks like browsing the web.
But I understand that this is an extremely powerful laptop for it's size, so it's not a big deal for me. Just minor complaints. Besides that, the laptop is great. If only other companies besides Apple and Hp can learn to build laptops that look and feel as great as the Envy. -
Just installed a second 4gb Corsair stick. I almost ordered a second one until I saw that the first stick uses almost the exact same parts as the second. Interesting how the Corsair stick is for the most part just a rebranded Hynix 4gb stick. I've got them both running in dual channel mode.
Once I find a super sweet deal on a 120gb SSD, my Envy 14 will be a super mobile beast! XD -
I have already ordered the Microsoft one.
When I called up Amazon, I simply told them the issues I have mentioned here. HP made a good laptop in Envy 14, though it took them the debacles of Envy 15 and Envy 17 to reach here. But the problem with almost all notebook vendors and especially HP is that they do not have strict quality control. It totally depends on your luck if you get a good one or bad one. MacBook Pros though not entirely perfect still have much higher build quality and consistency. Samsung is the only other vendor I have seen in recent times which has a great level of quality control. -
Anyone having issues with the touchpad where it will stop registering tap to click, two finger scroll, etc.? I think it started a while back after updating the synaptics touchpad drivers but I've updated several more times since then and the issue remains. I have to hibernate the laptop and resume it and the touchpad works properly again. I'm on synaptics driver version 15.1.16.2.

I've seen little tidbits in my adventures across these forums, but I haven't really encountered a good thread that has this kind of information condensed in one spot.
For those of you who have owned your envy's for awhile, what tweaks, drivers, bios, etc do you recommend to someone just getting theirs or reformatting.
(I just ordered the beats edition and a nice little android sticker to cover the gaudy beats logo) -
i give you my bet, you have to replace the top cover (keyboard). costs appr. 75$. you can try take the top cover off and rinse it with some alcohol. (something that absorbs before you replace your spilled topcover)
-
Page 1 is a good starting point. However, tweaks are individual and subjective. So a thread for it is not a good idea. Everyone is at different levels of understanding. Some inexperienced posters could mess up their rig trying out some tweaks.
Anyway, just ask around in this thread and read around the forum for tweaks and tips. Many tips are not Envy specific but are OS specific. -
Hello msweeney,
I have experienced similar issues with my touchpad from time to time, however, I have not traced them back to any specific driver version. In fact, I have had this problem periodically arise with every driver version that I have used, from initial release to current.
When such occurrences have happened on my Envy, I also noticed a coinciding revving of the fans which would remain until I took some action to resolve the problem. Have you noticed this as well?
Although at first I too resolved things by hibernating or restarting my Envy, I noticed after some experimentation that I could get the problem to go away simply by closing Internet Explorer. Now, I haven't experienced this problem very often, perhaps somewhere around five times total, and thus I cannot be sure that it is a direct issue with my web browser, but doing this has consistently and immediately made the problem go away since I discovered it. The actual resolution to the problem may be closing all open applications, however, seeing as I generally only have my web browser open, I cannot say for sure.
Unfortunately my similar experiences are all I have to offer at this point. I posted about the issue myself a couple of months back and received no replies, but just ended up forgetting about it due to its relatively quick fix with closing IE and its infrequent occurrence.
I too would be interested in a response from anyone who has managed to track down a more lasting and/or explanatory resolution to this issue. -
I was hoping to avoid that by just popping the entire keyboard up and cleaning it up with alcohol.
And to clean the keyboard, do I have to pop it up as a plate (all the keys together assuming they are connected) or just the specific keys that need cleaning?
EDIT UPDATE:
Help on my clean install. Even after installing the drivers on HP's website, certain functions such as fn + esc do not work, functions that worked before my clean install (hp functions mainly).
Also, I cannot connect to my phone (android with barnacle wifi tethering) for tethering anymore although it worked before my clean install...wifi is working and drivers are installed... -
Hey All,
On my new Envy 14 I was getting about 3.5 hours of battery life.
I did a fresh install of Windows 7 and up graded the hardware drivers only. Did not install any other software from HP.
I upgraded my hard drive and memory:
OCZ Vertex 2 OCZSSD2-2VTXE120G 2.5" 120GB SATA II
OCZ 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333
Not only did my WEI score go from 5.9 to 6.9 it boots from start to desktop in 30 seconds! BUT the real extra bonus is the battery life now is 6 hours!
Installed BatteryBar and tweaked my power settings to do:
Dim the display: 1 minute
Turn off display: 2 minutes
Put computer to sleep: 15 minutes
Adjust plan brightness: set to 50%
has anyone else noticed this kind of difference in battery life after an SSD upgrade?
My system Specs before upgrade:
Intel Core i5-460M Processor 2.53GHz
4GB DDR3 System Memory
640GB (7200RPM) Hard Drive (SATA) -

What kind of a load were you putting on it? Or is that just stand by? -
It was just web browsing with the graphics card switched to intergrated graphics.
