But in all seriousness, yeah that kinda is a slap in the face for all previous i7 owners. But, thats technology for you, becoming obsolete before you even unlock its potential.

Hey guys I have a pretty simple question. Can I use dual layer dvds to create a recovery disc for the hp envy 14? Or does it have to be a single layer dvd-r? Also how many discs would it take?

First I had a Rep, called in to send it in for repair -> Supervisor when they had trouble processing my case, so i called for a case manager after that -> Case manager, when I had the delay I asked to speak to someone of higheer power -> Executive Case Manager (ECM)

I didn't forcefully demand the refund, I just explained to them that I got an email saying "Due to an overwhelming response to our Envy 14, the Radiance display is no longer being made by our supplier. We regret this occurred and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you."
And they called me earlier the week saying that my part has been baack ordered, so I explained to them that it did not make and sense to delay my product until 2/24 and await for the part to arrive when HP clearly stated that the company is out of business. My ECM, just told me she had no idea what I was talking about, and just knows that she cannot do anything unless they just put in the "next best screen"
Then, I said, "would it be possible to compansate with a new laptop?" Almost instantly she told me that is not possible. So I said, "Well, I had the Accidental Damage Protection which is supposed to have "fast and reliable" repair service on my laptop but I'm clearly not getting that. You told me that I would get my laptop back in 3-5 business days, and within a week you delayed my ENVY for a whole month. I cannot go without a laptop for a month. Could I just get a full refund....because this is ridiculous."
Apparently she didn't hesitate to process it because she agreed to just give it to me. To my surprise I wasn't expecting her to process my ADP warranty refund either, but she did. She told me that I will get my check in the mail in about 15 business days.

Sorry if what I wrote jumps all over the place, my friend let me borrow his netbook, its hard to get used to.

Does anyone know if you can get a keyboard cover for the Envy 14 without the US keyboard? I live in Canada and have the keyboard with the enter key that looks like a 7, not a flat line. I believe its considered an "EU" keyboard? I've found covers for the US keyboard on ebay but I cant seem to find any other versions. Anyone know of a site that sells them?

I have my first "complaint" :p
    I got a dead pixel
But otherwise, I've had this for nearly 5 months now, and it's the only bad thing I've encountered.
I have a question/request though, is there a program that would allow me to turn the screen off/on ?

One of the fn keys does. It's around where the f5 key should be (sent my envy back so can't look). It has a picture if a rectangle on the key.
Not sure about a certain program though. I'm sure one exists.

Well my case manager offered me a replacement laptop, but of course I'm not going to be happy with it unless it has the Radiance display.

He's going to look into it and get back to me tomorrow.

At this point I'm trying to decide which option gives me a better chance of getting a refund: pointing out that I'm not happy taking a lesser display and demanding a refund or accepting a replacement with a lesser display then returning that new laptop within the return period.

Hey everyone! Quick question, I as well as everyone else in this thread, am thoroughly disappointed with HP customer service. I have been waiting for my laptop for two months since I sent it in to be repaired. If it is delayed again I am going to ask for a refund.

SOOOO if I do get a refund when approximately will the new sandy bridge laptops be coming out?

some people said they may be announced late february, some others said september. I doubt the later as other brands are already rolling out their SB's (asus, lenovo, clevo...).
So if it get announced in late feb, maybe expect em in march or april ?

Yet, this is pure speculation ...

Hey guys. Another question here. How much does the envy 14 weigh? Because i have looked at sites like engadget, bestbuy and the hp website and the listed weight is different for each of those sites. Engadget states 5.2 and best buy states 5.6 lbs which is a pretty big difference to me. Any owners out there that compare the weight to a macbook pro 13 or 15?

I weighed mine (460M/4GB RAM 2 DIMM/BV Display/640GB HDD) on my very precise kitchen scale, and it was 5lbs 12 oz - 5.75lbs. I have no idea how it could possibly weigh in at 5.6 lbs much less 5.2 lbs.

HP lists it as 5.69lb for the Envy beats and 5.2 for the regular Envy, although they all seem to be ~5.7..but the thin form factor makes it a little easier to handle

reg envy = 5.2 as it comes (no additional options)
beats = 5.7 as it comes (no additional options)

according to the same company that advertised 7 hour battery life

I think the shell has a lot to do with that. It doesn't feel that bad when you carry it though - I would say it feels more "solid" than "heavy".

It's 5-6 lbs. Unless you're facebooking while biking moab I dont think anyone is going to have a problem carrying this thing around. Also, you have to remember this thing is 6 lbs and metal while other 4 and 5 lb laptops are crap plastic.

I weighed the regular Envy 14 at my work's lab using a scale precise to 0.1 gram. I got 2540 grams , which converts to 5.5 lbs.(it was i7+ 6gb+ 640 hdd + BV screen)

I'll weigh the next one when it comes.

The weight is really dependent on your build I think. I have the 460, 4GB, BV screen, and 640 HHD and although not as light as a feather, it's still easy to carry around and hold in your hand. Although sometimes I can really start to feel it weighing down on me after working for a while with it on my lap. If it's just on my lap for an hour or 2 even it's fine, but when I do programming for a few hours straight I often end up having to put it on a desk because having 5.5 pounds on my lap + the heat becomes somewhat of an annoyance.

if you plan to make use of the battery life, try nod32. It's not free but it has the smallest CPU footprint.
All the free antiviruses are power hogs (avast, AVG and antivir). I guess they are probably poorly programmed.

Another thing to consider, the internet browser. Chrome and Opera are much more efficient than IE and Firefox.

...Following on from this, i've now reformatted my Envy with a new retail version of Windows 7, everything in device manager seems to be installed, is it worth keeping the SwSetup folder that I copied earlier? If I ever plan to reformat in the future, I could just boot to the recovery partition, do a minimised install and the folder would be back right?

Also in regards to the graphic drivers, I see that AMD have released 11.1, so far i've only updated using the drivers HP have listed on there site (in the support pages) which I THINK are quite old now (in CCC its listed as version 8.771.1), is the best way to update them still to follow htwingnut's guide on the first page?

Nope no cpu whine and i can't even hear the fan unless i change graphics and it runs for 3 secs and back to not hearing it. The only thing is tht my right lower side of the track pad is ever so slightly raised. I mean the smallest amount you could raise it form 0. It doesn't bother me in the least bit but i know some folks are pretty crazy about stuff like that. Other than that its a perfect laptop and i wouldn't even consider that a defect.

Sweet, congrats! I'll report in next week when I get my sweet, sweet Radiance. I honestly couldn't care less if the touchpad is slightly raised, but for the love of god I hope there is no whinnnnnne.

I'm wondering how much I'll have to lower game graphic settings due to the higher native resolution.

Mine was a regular envy and as previously noted, it weighed 5.75lbs with no additional options. That HP understates the weight doesn't surprise me in the least, but what does surprise me is the unit to unit variation that's being reported in this thread. How is it possible that my unit weighed 1/4+ lbs more than other nearly identical units? That can't just be mfg variances and it's not a scale error on my end - my scale is calibrated with a deviation of no more than a tenth of an ounce.

I am having some problems with my HP, so Im going to do a fresh install.

How do I create my recover disks? With toshiba there was a program, but I cannot find a recovery disk creator. There is a folder called "recovery manager" but its empty.

Is there something im not doing right?

I tried many different ways of getting it back, but to no avail, so I am just going to use the recovery manager through the BIOS.

I dont think i ever had the program on my computer. A few weird things like that has happened with this computer.
