as far as I know ....both the i5 and i7 have 2 slots......
-
You are correct on the i7 using the 4 slots as the i5 has 4 slots but only 2 of which can be used.
-
Every time i post on here w/ my new envy (using google chrome) it attempts to post twice but then says i must wait 20 secs before i can post agian? This didn't happen on my returned envy. Anyone have any idea what the deal is?
-
just sounds like your clicking on the post button too fast lol
-
I haven't been monitoring my temps, just notice the absurd lag.
For what it's worth, I don't think my computer always lagged on battery. It's just the past month or so that it's been doing this.
I thought it was the GPU clocking down but even when I adjust it back to normal, games lag, so that's why I guess it's the CPU. -
So you can put 16 GB in the i7 ? (not that it would help anyway)
-
I could have sworn when I cracked open my last i5 envy there were only 2 slots. Oh well.
My envy shipped today! Will be here on Tuesday by 1030am! -
I guess you "could" but it has a 8gb max so you'd be wasting some money
-
im expecting mine on feb1 but then i checked the shipping/tracking and its out for delivery... so excited.
-
Isn't that the greatest feeling! congrats man!

I just got my envy 14 and I am disappointed! Here are the reasons why:
1.) the top right side of my keyboard is raised for some reason and sticks out. Next to the keyboard on the border between the keyboard and bottom panel there is chipped mark that is noticeable.
2.) My radiance display has a dead pixel near the center of the display. It is very noticeable when playing movies with backgrounds that are white or dark as i can see it.
3.) the fan is rather loud even when i changed it to the intel gpu the level of noise barely dropped and it seems the fans cycles on and off alot which gets annoying. (do any of u guys have this problem??) This is my main peeve with the laptop.
Well anyways i just wanted to share my experience and I am considering returning this. I can live with the first two points but i cannot live with the fan noise as it is bothersome.
I have an i5 560M, 6gb ram, radiance display and rest stock -
1.) Cant help you there
2.) Your display has a dead pixel but if you are lucky you can get rid of it.
try this site, it gives you instructions and 3 different ways. Read everything first. How to Get Rid of Dead Pixels
3. The fan has 2 settings. If you enable the fan to always on in the bios, it should take care of the cycling. I'm not sure though
If that doesn't work try this:
Control Panel>Power Options>Change Plan Settings>Change Advanced Power Settings>Expand Process Power Management>Expand System Cooling Policy>Change settings from "active" to "passive". Save changes.
that should lower it by at least 50%
there is also a proposed fix so you can try this
i got most of the info from this thread: Envy 14 Fan Noise
I tried my best
-
1. Try just pushing down on the part that is raised. My last Envy had a very slightly raised keyboard, I pushed down on the corner (where the keyboard piece sets into the laptop) and it clicked right into place.
-
Oh yeah my bad it is 4gb x 2.
-
I would recommend upgrading to the latest BIOS, and make sure the Intel GPU settings are all for maximum battery life (click the Intel icon in your system tray and go to Graphics Settings then go to Power).
Mine has a few flaws, but ones I can probably live with:
1. There is a strange whine coming from the CPU area. Only seems to happen when the CPU clocks itself down to save power. This however affects a lot of laptops, not just the Envy 14
2. There is a odd sound coming from around the CPU area on the notebook. It sounds kind of like a noisy hard disk drive, but I replaced the HDD with an SSD so it must be the CPU fan or capacitor making the noise (related to the CPU whine)
3. The keyboard is lower in the centre of the laptop than the sides. This is easy to notice when the backlight is turned on. There's also a fair amount of flex up near the 1 and 2 keys
4. The panels at the bottom are not entirely flush, especially the one that covers the battery and hard drive
To some this would probably be annoying, but the laptop is *far* quieter than my previous HP Pavilion dv2 which sounded like a case fan constantly. Also adding an SSD has made this notebook quieter and with lower temperatures. -
So now I've been bumped up to an Executive Case Manager who is telling me they can give me a refund, but it'll be prorated by how long I've had the computer. Since it's 6 months only, they would give me 1/2 of what I paid. .
It's not like they've released a new revision of the Envy 14. Considering that mine has a better screen than what's available now, I'd say my laptop is actually a step up from what they have to offer today.
I told my rep I was blown away and there was no way that was acceptable. She offered a different laptop, but I said this was the only on with the combination of screen resolution and battery life that HP carried and that met my needs. She agreed, even HP's 15 inch laptops can't match the Radiance screen.
She's going to "look into" whether they can give me a better rate on the pro-rating than 50% and get back in 1-2 business days.
I've had problems with Dell support, but in the end they always make it right. I'm wondering if HP is even capable of managing to make this right at this point... -
im still trying to get my money back they are sending me from person to person and giving me the same load. 1/2 of what you paid is absolutely ridiculous! one of the people i talked to said that they got more radiance screens but i have learned not to believe a word hp tells you.
-
Guys I have a question. Will this HDMI Capture Card work on the HP Envy 14?
Edit: Guess it would work if I posted the link
http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/ -
Wow HALF refund for SIX MONTHS??
With Dell, it's a FULL refund if they can't offer a comparable unit. I would push for a full refund also. If not I would resort to this argument: Laptop comes with 2 year warranty, so it should be 6/24 = 75% refund at a minimum. This still isn't fair, but it makes sense. Because after the 24 mo is up, you're at 0%. Using the other logic, it's at 0% after 1 year, with another year of warranty left.
I've owned nothing but Dells in my life time (before the Envy) and I've never had a poor offer or bad experience with the CS. They have ALWAYS made things right.
HP is nuts...Since I've been on this board, I have heard nothing but terrible things about HP's customer service... -
Hey guys I just sold my Envy because I was lucky to see 2.5 hours with out slice, but slice did bump it up to over 5.5+ hours but it just made way too heavy and unportable. I ultimately had to part with my beloved envy 14, but I still have the 256gb SSD OEM if anyone is interested, let me know, [email protected]
-
How much are you asking?
-
All Envies have 2 slots.
-
Does the i7 support 8gb modules?
-
does anyone has pics of WWAN antenna's in Envy 14 or any envy range?
-
When I took apart the screen, there were 2 antenna circuit boards, one to each side of the webcam. I didn't take a picture of it though...
-
yes, but its over 1k a dimm
-
Damn...now that makes me wonder if I'm going to be receiving my full check, but my ECM told me shes giving me a full refund (had the laptop since october)
-
funny i too only bought dell before the envy 14 and i switched from dell because of their terrible support and sleazy ways but they seem like perfect little angels compared to hp's nightmarish ways
-
Absolutely. I really thought Dell was bad, but eventually they always found a way to make things right. HP seems to be working hard to ensure that any solution they can provide will only frustrate me further.
-
what i dont understand is why they would send you a check as oppose to just paying it to your credit card
-
4GB dimms used to be pretty high too. Eventually the prices will come down.
-
i hope so. You could buy another envy with that money
-
I'm gonna send you a PM.
-
I'm really disappointed about these stories concerning Radiance screen repairs. I unfortunately dropped mine too (about a month ago), and purchased ADP about two weeks after. I'm waiting a bit so the call for a repair won't bring any suspicion, but it's really killing me after reading all of this. Demanding a full refund seems to be too much trouble, and it would be hard for me to find a replacement laptop with a similar deal.
-
well, if you are willing to wait weeks upon weeks for them to "repair" it...you are risking them trying to sneak in a BV screen.
Do what i did, send it in for repair and then they will give you a date (ranging from 5-10 days). Allow for ONE delay only. If they delay it again, take action. I was fortunate enough for them to delay it twice within a day. It was more relieving getting rid of it than waiting for HP to repair the machine. -
Wouldn't they be suspicious though if I'm asking for a repair a week after I bought ADP? I bought the laptop back in July so I don't want to create any trouble. I felt it was better to wait a bit before I call, but you're right with what you're saying. I plan to call in about 2 days anyway, so I'll see how things play out after that
-
AddictionsolA Notebook Consultant
I doubt they'd call you out on it. Hell I could see someone lucking out and buying that a week before they dropped their laptop.
-
So I bought my Envy 14 and I love it! ... there is just one thing I wanted to ask though. Right now I currently have 3RVX installed to have the volume indicator show up - I was wondering if there is the similar app but for brightness instead?
-
Waiting for my Radiance Envy 14. Did some reading on OSX86 but looks like no support for the ATI video card used in it... Anyone have any luck with this?
-
prices for 4gb dimm are already low . it might increase in coming times
-
i just got y envy last Friday... i just finished doing a clean install and already customized it according to my taste. what can i say about this baby?
A-W-E-S-O-M-E piece if machine. i love it. just some questions tho... my Fn+B does not work anymore. i did use the audio driver on the HP site. beats logo wont show up now. not a big deal but it would be great if its there.
another thing is i only got a 4Gig 1Dimm... planning to buy another one. is the brand matters? i mean does it have to be the same brand or it really doesn't matter? any good recomendation where to get a RAM tho?
thanks... i think im few of the lucky ones that the envy came in a good perfect condition. (radiance screen is so sweet) -
did anyone encounter this problem before??
its happen to me thrice already, it will blackout your display or hanged the display while playing videos... is my gpu gona fried soon?
-
try re-installing the drivers, but first, delete the driver you have right now with revo uninstaller so there are no conflicts.
btw that used to happen to me a lot, and then my graphics card died when i got a BSOD. I tried re-installing the operating system and drivers to no avail. Eventually I gave up and had to return it. Luckily i ordered from Costco, and I had a 90 day return policy. I hope your not as unlucky.
anyways, once your done installing those drivers, run a stress test to see if your system is running smoothly -
try the latest quicklauch-sp50681.exe...uninstall HP tone control if it is present .
most of 4gb 1333mhz dims are on hynix chips. buy corsair -
Curious, what are the benefits of a clean install and how long does it take? Also, given HP does does not ship win7 how do you install?
-
You can either do a clean install using a Windows 7 disc or a "clean" install via HP's recovery manager.
Most HP's come with a recovery partition that you can activate from your boot screen when you computer first turns on. You have to press a specific button when the boot screen flashes (usually F10 or Esc), and then follow to prompts to run the recovery manager. HP gives you the option to perform a minimal install, which is supposed to install only drivers and other software necessary for the computer to operate (many people take advantage of this).
The benefits of a clean install are mostly that you won't have any of HP's "bloatware" (they give you a ton of unnecessary programs) on your computer. Without these programs you computer should startup faster and have a cleaner O.S all together. Just note if you find a windows 7 disc and perform a clean install, you'll have to go to HP's site and download all the drivers. You'll also have to make sure that you have the same version that you computer came with otherwise the serial on your laptop won't match and it won't activate as genuine software. (If you haven't noticed, it's easier to use the recovery manager).
Now my question that someone can hopefully answer. After a minimal install I noticed that both Adobe Premier and Adobe Photoshop Elements were not installed. How do I get these back with out buying them? -
I use Avast. It works well (i.e., no viruses or trojans have broken through and I've noticed no material system slowdown) and is free.
I'm not sure what others are using. I've not heard anyone complain about specific issues with any of the brands and the Envy 14.
-
Very informative. Thanks. I wasn't aware of the bloatware... Haven't bought a PC in a long time. -
clean install is not that long to take... what i did is download all the drivers first and put in the usb and backup my activation of the OS.
i do a clean install not only just tohave a clean OS but i dont like that recovery partition that is shipped with the laptop. i want to use all the storage on my drive. so i delete that and do a clean install.
there are many ways to do a clean install... instructions are on the first page of this thread.
LOVE MY new toy ...
-
quicklaunch...? does that have anything to do with the audio? particularly the FN=b that makes that beats on the center screen?
and regarding RAM... so i must buy a hynix chips? ill try to look @ crosair... thanks tho...
