I have a question, is it safe to delete the recovery and HP Tools partition and merge the space into the main partition, and if so, how would I go about doing that?

If I want to return the laptop, would I have to restore the laptop to its original settings? If so, how would I do that?

If you want to hook up two external monitors, you will have to use the mini display port.

I bought a generic mDP>DVI adapter from Fry's today, and consistent with the theme, it won't output an image.

The ATI control panel does detect and show the model number of my connected external monitor (I tried it on two different monitors, in fact), but the monitor(s) show 'no signal', regardless of projector mode (desktop clone, extend, or external monitor only).

I'm going to exchange the mDP>DVI adapter tommorow for a mDP>VGA adapter and see if that works, since I believe erathostenes was able to make that configuration work with a VGA dongle.

Has anyone had any luck with a mDP>DVI adapter?

so i just got off the phone with hp...i have to send my unit back for repair  :( I could NOT for the life of me get the ATI card working after a full system recovery, numerous windows/driver/software installs. I think its a hardware problem...so another frickin 2 weeks and hopefully ill be able to enjoy this badboy. I think its worse that i actually have it in my hands now and have to send it back.....blah!

Any way you can automatically add a banner at the top of each new page that says in big bold letters: " Before you ask: See page 1 for answers to 90+ % of your questions."

Or if not that how about: "Welcome to the Envy 14 Department of Redundancy Department"

Just a thought from someone on a veeerrrrryyyy slllllllooooowwww 3G modem ( currently 4Kb/s )....

I was removing a bunch of HP Mediasmart crap and lost the ability to use my volume hotkeys on the keyboard. Anyone know what I need to reinstall to get that back?

EDIT: Nvm, I didn't lose the ability, that stupid screen doesn't pop-up in the background and minimize my other stuff now, nice!

See first page of the thread. There is a program for that called 3RVX. Make sure you go into the settings and change the hotkeys the volume up and down buttons and change monitor to display1 in the display settings.

This was probably already posted elsewhere, but can I return the laptop while still retaining my 30% BCB? On the phone, they said the BCB would be voided.

Also, the HP guy online flashed a new BIOS for a battery fix onto my computer because for some strange reason, he thought that would fix the whine. Now, I can't turn wifi off with the keyboard shortcut...

Can anyone spread some light on how to install the webcam after a clean install... I cant figure out what folder/installation it is, and dont wanna end up installing all that bloatware again. :swoon:
Also, can we get the community to put together a list of what each folder is and what it does, and sticky it at the top of the owners lounges, or the HP Page (Assuming all laptops come with SW_SETUP folder)?
    Just suggestions.

So after 4 or so hours of use. I still think this is the best laptop i have ever used.

Touchpad takes getting used too. but im getting used to it. If there is a "version two" envy im pretty sure i have it, and a damn good one.

Seriously, can you delete those repeated questions? For people that want to keep up with this thread it gets frustrating to see the same damn question repeated literally 10 times in one day. When the answer is in the 1st post there is no excuse for asking the question again.

Hey guys, thinking about selling my ssd on ebay but I have a few questions for you all first. If I sell the ssd and replace it with a different hd will my laptop still be covered under the accidental warranty I purchased? Also is it possible to make a copy of the recovery partition besides just making the discs so that I could have it on the new hd?

My reason for selling is personally I am not being wowed by the ssd, atleast not enough to justify $330 (what I can sell it for on ebay). I'm looking to replace it with a 500gb 7200 rpm drive.

Not sure about those, but I would just make the recovery discs. I got the ssd and I'm not really being wowed either to be honest. Startup time doesn't seem that great (I didn't do a clean install but still), applications don't load instantly, and really barely any faster than my desktop hdd. However, I do love the fact that it makes no noise at all, stays super cool, and has no moving parts so I can shake the laptop around lol...those 3 things alone IMO are enough for me to still love this thing.

    Nah, I wouldn't do that for a few reasons;

    • When a poster logs on and clicks this thread, they are directed to the latest post or if they read the thread before, the last page they were on.
    • New posters or posters that hung out in the shipping thread may not know page 1 exists or exactly what's on it since it is updated periodically.
    • An issue with their system might make some panic a bit and want the answer quickly and/or personalized.
    • Not every Owner's lounge has a post like the first, so it might not be expected.

Just have to bear with it for a while and keep reminding folks to look on page 1. After a while posters will become familiar with it and what's on it.

    Walk good. :)

Webcam doesn't need a driver. Win7 has that built in.

If you mean software to use the webcam... that's a different story.

All HP notebooks come with SWsetup folder. But it's somewhat unique to the model since different components have different drivers.

One way to figure out what is what is to look at each directory in there. There's usually enough info in there to figure out what each is. Also you can match or look up the softpak numbers on HP's FTP directory. (Link on page one under driver section.)

Someone could make a guide, but if one is doing a clean install, all you need to know is what is driver to use. You can find that out by looking at Justin's drive thread.

Does it matter if we fully charge the Envy when we first get it before we turn it on? I know this has been asked, but I don't think it was answered. Doesn't seem like it would make a difference at all, but does it? Just trying to make sure.

Looks like I missed some discussion on clean install. I had some issue too.

What I usually do is use Gparted Live CD. It's a free open source program, that boots into a linux environment and lets you resize, create, and delete partitions. I just blew away all the paritions. I guess you shouldn't delete the BIOS partition though (can't recall what that was named) because apparently you can't update the BIOS without it.

I still had a little issue. Sometimes it would get past the intial loading screen then go blank. I had to reboot, and try again, then it worked. Odd intermittent issue.

You can update the BIOS without the HP_tools directory. You have to unpack the BIOS softpack and run the Bios file as administrator. Better instructions are on page 1.

for the people that use your pc's alot during the night... I highly recommend trying this software out..

F.lux: software to make your life better

It just makes the screen warmer and so much easier on the eyes its unbelievable. Its really light on recourses too. Just dl, and put in your location. (I played around with it and set the lowest setting to 3500k at night)

It looks weird at first but just try it for 5-10 min and then turn it off, you'll see how amazing it is.

You can get a Vaio Z at MicroCenter with same specs: i5-520m, 4GB, 1600x900, 128GB SSD for $1700. But with BCB the one at TigerDirect is ~ $1573 + shipping (or tax if you live in one of their store states, I don't :D ). Plus keep in mind that if you can manage to get ahold of a running laptop with Pentium 2GHz or faster you can get a $300 trade-in with sony. So even if you have to spend $100 on a laptop to trade-in from eBay or Craigslist, you can get the price down another $150-$200, making it ~ $1400.

If it weren't for the crappy performance of the HD 5650 that HP threw in the Envy 14 I probably wouldn't have considered the Vaio Z, now I'm looking at it too. I played with one at MicroCenter a few weeks back and it was very nice. Very light. But I think the screen is almost too small for my needs. But seems the GT 330m can be overclocked to a 3DMark06 score similar to the 5650.

    htwingnut I like you,

Also, I think that I may just get a screen to use for when I am at home or dockable, or just use a tv screen.

My laptop is for school I might as well get a tiny one, the screens not eye hurting or anything, so I think it will be perfect, and when necessary I'll plug in an hdmi cord and presto good to go.

    Also
Not really, but I did think that the ratio of the laptop (width to length) was significantly more length than most, so, that has a lot to do with it. (length of a 15'' laptop, width of a 13'')

So I think it got lost in my boring post before, but how does the glossyness of the E14 compare to other laptops? This is my first laptop, but it really seems unnecessarily glossy to me. I may have to consider getting one of those anti-glare film thingys.

I remember reading that the default wifi drivers are terrible, but should I be having to reboot the computer to get it to come back (sorry if this has been covered before, I've been trying to keep up)? Or does that point to a bigger problem?

    Thanks.

I requested an RMA earlier this evening and I was told to send an email to [email protected] with my RMA number and product number, however when I did so I got an automated email response back saying the inbox was full. How is it that microsoft allowed their inbox to become to full? Am I doing something wrong?
