Hi I purchased my Envy 14 from online store and received two days ago. (YAY! and about frickin' time) I went through the Official HP Envy 14 Owner's Lounge Guides and such to sort out the bloatware problems and etc. But I would like to do some final touch-up, like undervolting cpu and overclocking gpu (it was VERY disappointing finding out about HP Envy 14's ATI HD 5650's 450 mhrz core speed). Also, for all Envy 14 owners, my fan seems to be on constantly even when the BIOS Fan Always On option is turned off. Is it normal for the fan to be turned on all the time? It would be greatly appreciated if anyone could help me. Thank you in advance.

Someone mentioned it a few pages back, and just to bump it, what's the best way to clean the Envy's Radiance Screen? Is it Glass or Plastic? I cleaned it successfully with Windex thinking it was glass but maybe someone has a better idea?

Yea, so much for 1000$ with i5 and radiance display!!! they're moving in the other direction lol!

I'm still gonna call and try for a $25 price match on the processor, even though it's technically not cheaper for that config anymore lol! I guess I'll do it now... only been putting it off for a month now.

aww man the rep is reconfiguring it... hopefully i can convince him i didnt know about the radiance price bump

*edit* hold music is LOL... every1 in part 1 said it was epic ^.^

And he seems to have ignored the price change due to the screen options being changed, so yay $25 on the way. He gave some number in regards to the money being sent back to my credit card, do i need this? or will the money auto transfer without me doing anything?

So last night I was using my NV and i noticed the left side of the backlit keyboard was super dim...and then later it lit up brighter like it should be on its own...and then it got dim again, and later lit back up
Very strange...the backlight shouldn't be screwed up like that. I'm returning this unit anyway though, so all's good

So I went to fry's and bought a couple different mini displayport adapters to try out.

Tested on a Viewsonic VP201b (20.1" 1600x1200 IPS panel with DVI and VGA inputs), and a HP 2509m (25" 1920x1080 TN Panel with HDMI, DVI, and VGA).

    mDP->VGA: works!
mDP->HDMI: works! (no audio pass-through, of course)
    mDP->DVI (passive): doesn't work
mDP->VGA->VGA-DVI adapter: doesn't work (on either DVI digital or analogue modes)

Forgot to buy a HDMI->DVI adapter to couple with the mDP->HDMI adapter.

Unable to get DVI working with a passive adapter. Not sure why, and Envy tech support doesn't know exactly why either but they acknowledged it as a known issue. An active adapter might possibly work, but I'm not about to spend $100 on an adapter to find out.

CPU whine, which has subsided some, but scared it'll come back in full force. Also, the HP logo backlight is messed up...It actually slides around in the screen, when I shake the computer I can see it move, which is kind of annoying. I placed a new order so I could keep this one in the meantime.

    I am so torn.

To order the Vaio Z I want from Tiger Direct with 15.6 cash back, I need to do it, like, now.

It comes out to a total of around 1575, but, thats with the cash back, and thats going away in like 3 days.

But what if my envy ships perfectly, its already very good for me...

Just got mine today :D :D
No whine No dented slot drives, can't see the mobo through any cracks by the touchpad so I'm pretty excited. I haven't made the recovery discs yet, I dont feel like using DVD's :( I tried using daemon tools to hopefully "burn" the discs to virtual drives and then copy the ISO to an external, but it didn't let me :(.

This screen is fantastic! I hate the touchpad though, gonna try the one hosting on google code pretty soon. Gotta reformat soon anyways. I also just noticed, when I use the webcam a little light turns on! I've never seen that before in a laptop so it's pretty neat.

So Im planning on order the Envy 14 tomorrow. Have to order it from the US since we only got one modell with Radience here in Norway, and that one got 6 gb ram and 2 batteries, which I dont need and dont want to pay for.

I decided to go for the i5-450 instead of the i5-520 and save the 100$. Im gonna use the PC for mostly for school, internett (skype, etc.) and photo editiing. Some HD-video editing and gaming too but not that much so the 520 would probably make no difference for me.

Should I ask for the System Recovery DVD with Genuine Windows 7? Or is this something that it's easy to make by your own? I must have the opportunity to reinstall windows on the PC, so if it isnt possible to make these CD by your own I got to order one. (Taking about making it the legal way, with drivers etc. for the pc)

I've planning on order it with one 4 GB pin, but understand that it's actually better with 2x2gb? Is this huge different? 2x2gb vs. 1x4gb? I dont think the memory will be the problem, but im planning on buying a SSD when it gets a
    little cheaper.

Here's the specs Im planning to buy: Radience 1600x900, 4gb ram, 500gb 7200rpm, i5 450. Any comments on that compared to what im gonna use it to?

Yes. But it would be cheaper to buy the part yourself and install it yourself. Real simple to do. See service manual on page 1.

Help! screen brightness control (fn + f2/f3) doesn't work after resuming from sleep. already contacted HP support and tried: reinstall ACPI Fixed Feature Button, and update BIOS to the latest version. both did not work. does anyone have the same problem?

well I looked on Best buy's website and they seem to have taken down their listing for the Envy 14 (which is odd, since I went in to see it at the store the other day)... In any case, Future Shop has one posted:

    HP 14.5" Intel Core i5-430M Laptop (14-1050CA) - Silver - Future Shop

You can see in the spec sheet that it clearly states 1366*768, so /shrug... Unless you know something I don't, I'm assuming we have the lower res screen in Canada.

Just examined one at futureshop 2 hours ago. Brought my iphone and examined the futureshop website and noted that the item # and price on the website were the same as the item in store. The laptop instore had a resolution (looked at the display properties within Windows) of 1600 x 900.

Wow I think I pulled off my first clean install, much thanks to justin. Really helped me along. I am sure I messed something up since I have yet to test any of it, so I no doubt we'll be back with problems. Right now I have:
    - 133GB free from 148GB
    - at start up i have 49 or 50 (it alternates is that normal????) processes running. Once again someone has to let me know if this is alright????
    - Shut down time: 5second for screen to go black, 7 seconds for power button to be off
    - Start up time: 38 seconds, with me typing in my password asap + waiting for the cursor's loading circle to disappear. This seem a little slow??? Seems like its stuck on the Windows 7 load for really long time.

This is all with no programs loaded on it other than the drivers.

My next step is to find how to get some more free GB from the device from the post that JJB

    Huge Question:
    1. Have people figured out how to get the double tap to turn off the trackpad to work again after a clean install?????????????????

@vladmoney Installing the Synaptics driver should enable the tap to disable area, at least it did for me. I'm pretty sure I had at least that many processes after I did my clean install of Ultimate, don't know about the other things as I didn't pay too much attention.

So, unboxed this new beast and thought to myself, "How to test the gaming performance?".

    "Crysis" was the obvious answer.

I then attempted to get the DVD into the slot drive. Unsuccessfully. Very unsuccesfully. It appeared that there was a disc or something in the drive.

So i used the double credit card trick to see if I could get the obstruction out.

And it did come out. It was black piece of rubber/plastic about 1.5 inches long. Has a little debossed arrow at one end.

Anyone have any idea whether I'm just lucky to get a extra piece of plastic or should I be RA-ing this sucker? The slot drive seems very noisy considering it has less moving parts that a tray drive.

Normally Windows will disable defragmentation, but not the other services.

You can just disable them manually fairly easily.
