hehe i have a 3 year old dv6000 also. i hate that piece of and love it at the same time. only reason i'm replacing it with an envy is cause all three of my batteries already died on me and it can't play sc2 (gpu temp hit 103)
-
Thanks for the link to CPUgenie. Unfortunately it seems a little confused about my 540M, shows it as a quad core (8 threads) with a 6x multiplier (9x is normal minimum) and has the standard minimum voltage showing .725 which is supposed to be .850V. Needless to say it crashed immidiately each time I tried the 'wizard' testing. The one thing that it does show that I have not seen (accurately) in any other app is the actual real time CPU voltage as the CPU changes power states, frequency and turbo, so as a monitor to see voltage it works but obviously it is not a functional app for the i5's.
I sent an email to the support link asking if they were working on support for the i3/i5 series and if so when could we expect something. I will post an update if they repond with info.... -
Her battery died about a year ago and I replaced it with a 9 cell one. Lasts around 4 hours but I don't like how the thing sticks out. Plus the laptop is already heavy, adding that thing makes it even worse.
Other than the battery, we've had zero problems with it. Hopefully the Envy will be just as dependable.

has anyone found an anti-glare screen for this yet? just wondering...
-
As soon as part deux came out it slowed down :/ Mayb people havn't found this thread yet.
-
It's true I'm used to being able to google "Envy 14 Owner's" on my phone because its easier than manually going through a forum.
Now its not the result
-
Has anyone noticed that when you change settings in the BIOS and then you exit & save, the computer powers off? I can't turn it back on unless I pull out the power and plug it back in.
-
does anyone know what happened to the available hp envy warranty plans? It keeps changing
I was going to purchase mine today, but I noticed that the cheaper 2 year warranty plan is gone. Also before that there was a cheaper 3 year plan without accidental damage protection but it's gone too
Every plan is with accidental protection now and really expensive
should I just go without warranty? It seems risky.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
that doesn't happen to mine -
can you guys give me a rating on the laptops 1-10 and if not a perfect 10 why. be reasonable because CPU whine is no reason to give it a 2 if your pc is flawless.
-
...there are well over 10,000 posts on this forum about this laptop, were all those not enough to give you an idea what people think about the E14?
-
I want a rating. An overall "i love this 10stars". The forum before was just taking the good and bad. there are several reviews but not enough for me.
-
LOL. Yours will be here soon. You can rate and review yours then.
If you were a prospective buyer, your wanting an overall from others would make sense.
Now-stop-it.
-
So how many people got their ENVY's from the ebay person???
-
*cough*
--evil glance--
YOUR A MONSTER!!
@sonny there is a feedback on her profile with someone who got an envy 14 and said it was perfect. -
@ Justos
I'd rate the Envy that I had around a 9 if it didn't have the whine.
I'll rate what I think a perfect model would have. (whineless, issueless)
There are some inarguable downsides to the Envy 14 such as
The Bad:
-Long recovery time from sleep (which comes with unnecessary noise from the Dvd slot)
-Comes with tons of bloat ware outdated drivers (easily fixed)
-Heavy for its size (easily fixed by not having pooseee wrists)
-Terrible placement of ethernet cable, its in your mouse space if you're right handed. also its upside down idk why.
-Graphics card comes underclocked and has issues OC'ing, not as great gaming as advertised
Neutrals:
/Tight USB slots. One of my Toshiba's USB slots was loose from the beginning, eventually cords came out too easily with little force because the USB slot was so slippery so personally I like that they're tight. (insert sexual joke i'm too lazy to make)
/Fan noise. I've heard it bothers some people, so I thought I'd mention it, but personally my fan seems to be making a lot of noise sometimes but it doesn't bother me whatsoever. It's so easily tuned out and I'm used to the fan's on my gaming machines going ballistic in an attempt to not have my tower catch fire.
The Good:
+Excellent size. My 15.6" was too bulky, 13.1" too small, this thing is the perfect size, seriously.
+Nice keyboard, I haven't typed on it for gratuitous amounts of time but it feels nice and has a good hotkey set up.
+The screen is amazing. Its very sharp, and I wouldn't listen to the people asking for crazy viewing angles and less glare. Unfortunately Hp doesn't make its screen out of insanium, seriously how much can you ask for.
+Design is nice, it is sleek and high quality looking. I'm not sure about over time, but it looks very premo in it's new state.
+Easy access to the computer's internals, which I like.
I can write more if you want. -
So I installed HP Wireless Assistant after my clean install, and now I'd like to take it off, because it stinks. But it's the only way I know to shut Bluetooth off and on. Does anyone know where else I'd find BT controls?
-
that was exactly what i was looking for; thanks.
Most of the cons you stated dont affect me whatsoever. the 5650 is more then enough undervolted for World of Warcraft. (main game im playing).
Also the heaviness isnt an issue (im not a weakling) & i never put my pc on sleep. -
Alright just got my RMA# and fedex label. Here's to hoping the exchanged e14 laptop I get is PERFECT
-
-It goes to sleep when you close it, once you've had a computer you can put to sleep and wake up in .25 seconds, it becomes pretty annoying that this one takes about 5-8 seconds :/ this is possibly just my model
-Yes, I'm not a weakling either just sometimes moving it can be awkward, its got awkward weight distribution it feels like and can't easily be moved just by a corner.
Ps, I added moar to the review just a tad.
@Cheers to that, I also RMA'd mine and ordered a new one and hope mines perfect too, I'll be soo happy lol. -
I know.
True story. -
tornbacchus GO leafs.. Wait, Nevermid
Whats the number for the HP direct line? The good one?
-
Is this what happens to a thread on the NBR forums when you divide 10000 posts by zero?
-
I have an interesting question,
This will take one of you pro's who knows more about mobo's than me XD
Is there anyway I could take out the slot loader and leave it empty for weight and to prevent random obnoxious noise?
Everyone's heard the noise I'm sure, such as when you come out of sleep and it goes vzvzvzvvzvzvzzrrrrrrtttttt.
I want to remove the slot loader, but keep it somewhere like an external that I can easily plug into my laptop and then use.
Possible? -
I have disabled B/T because i don't use it.
IIRC ther are 2 ways once you get rid of hp wireless assistant, it will sow up in the 'hidden icons' (up arrow) when off and if turned on you can set it to show in taskbar. You can also right click on battery icon and open 'windows mobility center' will give you control options. Also you should have a B/T icon in the control panel.
Note, if it does not show in the hidden area> right click on the little up arrow > properties > customize icons > set how you want it to behave.... -
Beautiful, thanks!
-
Out of curiosity, what have the machine's temps been for you guys?
I've been doing a lot of video encoding this last week and I've noticed the temps really gettin' up there. At idle, my cores 0/1 hover around 39-44. Under load, they get up to the low-to-mid 80s. Is anyone else seeing this? I'm trying to determine if this is normal for most of us or if I should consider RMAing it in favor of another one.
My CPU is the i5 450m. I did a clean install of Windows 7 Pro using all of HP's original drivers. -
Encoding and getting into the 80's isnt unreasonable, but I would like to see it stay mid 70's. Idle temp is fine.
-
Please explain this a little better, under load have the temperatures been consistent or have the temperatures been increasing?
-
CLOCKMOD forums | trying to undervolt i5 mobile. i can see one p-state only
Taken from their support forums. DiveDr is a moderator there. So apparently no i3/i5/i7-support
-
I'm pretty sure I did...
They pretty much hover in the 83-86 range, under load. -
By getting up there I thought you might have meant the under load temperatures had been increasing, as in
day 1: ~70 degrees
day 3: ~75 degrees
etc. -
Ah, no, nothing like that. I just meant the temps are gettin' up high...higher than I thought they would. And I just want to confirm that mine is not a unique case.
-
Of course. Just open it up, remove the ODD, and leave it empty. You might want to tape down the SATA/power cables that so they don't bounce around.
You could also do as I suggested and put an SSD in there, and well, duct tape it down or something. -
So, theres a SATA/power cable it connects to.
Would there be an easy way to connect/disconnect it in?
I feel like it would make it slightly lighter and make sure the noises don't go off
But I'll probably have to open my computer everytime I need to connect or disconnect it...
Or maybe I can go through the external SATA slot? -
There are enclosers that you can buy but they're pretty expensive, you're better off buying a new external dvd for $40 from new egg.
-
Has anyone converted the optical drive to a secondary hard drive bay?
-
Hey guys I'm trying to get the rebates from Fatwallet or Mr. Rebates, but I can't find out how they will work? How do they know I made the purchase?
Also, is it normal if none of the coupon codes they are telling me are working because of the student discount? -
Yes this is normal. I am in the same boat with the student discount and cannot use any coupons.
-
I believe some people determined it is just a regular SATA cable. I don't know about the power, I'd assume it's also just a SATA-power connector. As for disconnecting it, I'm pretty sure you just pull out the connectors.
This has been discussed many times. Some are planning to do it, though as far as I know, no one has actually done it and posted back as of yet.
Yes. Virtually no coupons are compatible with the student discount. I just skipped the coupons and went with my 10% student discount. -
Ah ok thanks
Finally, I cant get the $30 proffessional upgrade to work
Windows 7 Student Discount as said in the OP. They said I'd need a coupon code of some sort.
-
Should I be concerned if one of my cores is 10 degrees higher than the other?
-
I'm not sure how many actually got that to work. Seems kind of silly though, because if someone is a student they could just buy an upgrade copy for $30.
Honestly, my university gave me two free copies of Windows 7 Professional, though that is because I'm an engineering student. I also have a Windows 7 Enterprise key from MSDN, which I intend to install on my Envy 14 when it arrives. -
I think some on has made it into an SSD drive,
SSD (as you know) has no moving parts, they're much more tough and wouldn't get damaged, HDD would require way more stabilizing in place, if it rattles around it could mess it up XD
Does anyone know what kind of slot loading optical drive the Envy 14 has?? -
Wow thank you for reminding me of that - i had forgotten my college offers 2 free windows 7 ultimates...
-
what are the advantages of having professional? i may buy a copy if it is wort the $30
-
All the time? I havent looked into TurboBoost but I assume that to be the cause if its boosting one core up.
-
Just found this odd bug with the HP website. I went for the student loan but didn't get it. Be careful anyone using this discount, make sure you get it!
As far as I know these laptops are identical.
-
I have an i3 :/ , and yes it's like this all the time.
