Mine's coming next week supposedly: shipped to her earlier this week.

From what I have seen, most others seem to be the same.

    Envy 14's 5650 is clocked at 450/800
    dv6tse's 5650 is 550/800

ATI's specs for the 5650 is 450-650mhz for core

Envy 14 supposed to be a premium laptop compared to dv6tse.
    Why are they doing this?

We're not sure. You can probably clock your 5650 up to 550MHz on the core with a little effort.

Check out the Envy 14 Gaming Lounge for more information on overclocking.

Oh, and where are the Windows 7 Product key labels on the laptop? So I can do the clean install right when I get it.

Just use the program located here:

    download: http://directedge.us/files/abr/ABRbeta.exe
source (scroll down to the beta version): http://directedge.us/content/abr-act...up-and-restore (thanks orev and justinkw1)

-make sure you keep the program and the backup file it makes on a flash drive or cd so that you can restore it once you reinstall
This will back up your original OEM cert and key, which will allow you to reactivate without the mess usually necessary to activate with the key on the bottom of the laptop.

Pop in the DVD/USB drive and install Windows 7

Once the Win7 has booted up after the reinstall, use the program above to restore your OEM activation.

I'm looking at the Scoprio Blue 640GB and the 750GB version for ODD replacement. I would appreciate the extra space, but it seems that the 750gb version performs noticeably slower in systems that do not support "4k sectors." Does the Envy 14 have 4k sectors, or the older 512b sectors?

You've misunderstood what a "4k sector" is-- it's the hard drive that supports 4k sectors, not the Envy 14.

When they say "systems that support 4k sectors," they are referring to the operating system. For example, Windows XP does not support 4k sectors. Windows Vista and Windows 7 both support 4k sectors. I would not worry about it.

If this is a storage drive (not going to have an OS installed on it), I wouldn't worry about it either way.

Heavy for its size? lolwut? It's pretty darn light. Show me any other laptop with these guts and size and that's lighter. My current 15" weighs over 7.5 lbs. That's heavy for a 15". The Acer 3820T weighs 4 lbs with no ODD, a much smaller screen (lighter), and made all of plastic.

Related to this, I would like to see someone remove the Envy 14's ODD and weighing the Envy 14 without it, so we can see how much weight it is adding.

I wonder if it would be lighter than the Envy 15 (I would assume so).

Quite a bit lighter without it. The E 15 is only like .15 lbs lighter, also the the intel SSD saves aver an ounce compared to std HDD. Just look up a data sheet on an internal slot load drive to get an idea of the weight...

two things you need to check for high contrast mode.

first. control panel --> ease of access --> ease of access center --> make this computer easier to see.

disable the turn on or off high contrast stuff.

next, go to the themes and make sure you didn't pick a high contrast theme in personalization

I have a few questions regarding my reinstallation of windows 7 on my envy. First, what driver or software do I need to reinstall to get the volume bar to show up in the center of my screen when I push the volume keys? Secondly, I botched the backup of my activation key when reinstalling windows, is there anything I can do to avoid calling microsoft to reactivate my copy?

I don't know much about these 3DMark Scores -- I suppose the test holds the screen image to some default resolution. But I notice that the difference between 9000 and 6500 is almost exactly the difference between the number of pixels between the two machines.

Can anyone help me understand, functionally, what is the difference between 6500 and 9000? For example what difference would I notice in a certain game or in watching videos. (I suppose regular processing will not notice the differences).

Also -- can anyone tell me if the touchpad is OK? I went to the store and used this new type of touchpad on a DV6t, an ENVY 17, a DM4 and an ENVY 14. The pad on the DV6t was so hard to press it was basically unusable. The ENVY 17 and 14 were both also, somewhat hard, but tolerable. The DM4 was a dream. Are these touchpads variable in quality like that?

Also, I found that the cursor would jump and hop around and not be cooperative on the ENVY 14 or the DV6t. Is that fixed with driver upgrades?

If you use the touchpad where you rest your thumb on the button, and move the cursor with your index finger, then this touchpad is fairly uncooperative. However, some have found settings that make it reasonable for them, so YMMV.

If you use tap to click, then you should find the trackpad excellent -- especially after getting the google code link that should be on the first page. I love the trackpad after having changed the way I control the cursor.

So, its been 2-3 weeks now. Aside from the folk who had to immediately RMA their machine, how are you guys liking it after living with it for a while?

I have heard of a couple of problems
    1. Touchpad is weird/obnoxious/tolerable
    2. GPU is undervolted and slow
    3. sharp edges or some fit and finished not refined.

Anyone have anything to say to a person on the fence? I'm looking at this machine, a DV6t and and Dm4. Macbook Pro is in the back of my mind also although really, I prefer to run windows.

Hey guys, I have an external monitor that only accepts VGA and DVI-D inputs. Since the E14 only has Mini-Display and HDMI, what would be the cheapest option to be able to continue use of the external monitor?

I wouldn't mess with DisplayPort, many people have troubles with it.

Luckily, HDMI and DVI are electrically identical. You should just need an HDMI to DVI adapter, which are passive and cheap. Most video cards come with them. Hell, I have a couple of them sitting around the house.

anyone have any good recs for a wireless mouse? I'm looking for one that might have customizable buttons, and a forward back buttons would be cool - also midsized.

also - anyone use any kind of laptop caddy that they can recommend?

Would you recommend getting just the adapter if I have a DVI cable or should I buy the DVI-male to HDMI-male cable?
