I used the portable. I was just wondering though, I installed that HP drive guard or whatever since it was the only missing device with a fresh install. Wonder if that has anything to do with it?

I'll try running the installed version.

Not a fresh install. I'm just sending this guy back, so I'm not going to put in the effort.

Ran the installed version, and ran as admin.

hmmm, I did a fresh install and its not working. Seems like this shouldn't matter though, it should be within the drive itself, right?

I even checked if Windows TRIM is enabled:

a result of 0 is supposed to mean its on.

Could be something blocking the SMART command pass through. Like Intel matrix or rapid storage technology driver.

In device manager under IDE/ATAPI controllers, do you have the standard ACHI 1.0 Serial ATA controller?

That just means that windows will pass Trim commands but not that TRIM is enabled on the drive.

The first post needs to be edited, because the Radiance is no longer the default screen - its now a regular Brightview panel with the Radiance as a$200 upgrade....

I don't get why they would call you in particular and offer you about 800$ worth of upgrades. Maybe they're trying to give you a prototype lol dunno.

Btw, my best friend finally recieved my 3 envys and checked for every single hardware/cosmetic problem there could be, it's all clear ! (there's just a slight touchpad flush issue on one of them, anyways he's the one going to keep that one ahahah I made him a price : 800$ for a slightly unflushed 450m radiance screen). Now it's just a matter of time before I get back to the us and start ing up the ODD for good with tape and .

Here's my device manager for ATA/ATAPI (unknown device is the drive smartguard I just uninstalled):

I certainly think that's the best choice on performance alone. And even more so since they're charging an arm and a leg for the Samsung and the Intel is such a great price.

I found the reason for the 6.7 vs 6.8 Processor and Memory Windows Experience Index discrepancy. I was running Granola on the original machine. I pulled it off and now they both show 6.8 for Processor and Memory.

Anyone else find that Granola is worthwhile? I didn't see any discernible increase in battery life, so I'm removing it.

Right click that and hit uninstall (check delete driver) then reboot. You can always put it back later as it was installed with the chipset driver. Then see what it puts in its place. It should be the standard Microsoft ACHI driver. Then run CrystalDisk to see if it recognizes TRIM.

    Still no TRIM... hmmm

edit: I uninstalled THAT one and now it says Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller

    But still no TRIM showing

Yeah. That's what I usually do, but the other time when I open the lid, it doesnt want to wake up, so I have to press the power button for the windows to resume and that thing with AMD came out. After that it works like usual. Not sure what that AMD program does.

Did you install the Intel Rapid Storage Manager BTW? Justin has it listed in his driver thread.

Don't know what to tell you bro. Either something is missing or the drive needs to be reflashed.

I'd like to see if someone else who did a clean install with the Samsung has the same issue.

TRIM may be enabled and it's not reporting it but time and activity has to pass in order to tell.

Problem is where do I get the firmware? Also, I plan on doing a fresh install again anyhow. I might just for giggles install the HP load and see if TRIM shows up, then a fresh install and see what I get.

I peeked over at the Alienware forum and some of the Samsungs show TRIM and/or % of drive life left and some neither.

    Here's the thread i was reading: http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...-samsung-pm800-ssd-trim-now-available-14.html

Before you linked that I was wondering if maybe they used an HP firmware that would disable some features or not work as intended if not with the HP load. Apparently it is an HP specific firmware.

Seems some have TRIM and some don't and looks like you could brick it fairly easily trying to use the official Samsung firmware update. I think I'll just have to have HP send me an new SSD to exchange if they'll do it. Either that, or I'll just take an Intel 160GB and have them refund me the difference. I don't want to return it because I don't want to fubar my BCB or risk getting a machine with other issues.

I did a fresh install (so fast of USB HDD) and still no TRIM. I'm doing a reinstall off the DVD's. Nice thing is there is an option for a "minimal install". We'll see how well that works. It'll be nice if they just basically load drivers and the basic apps needed to run the system. May save lots of people the frustration of doing a fresh install themselves.

It works well enough in conjunction with the fingerprint reader. Though it only works best for brightly lit environments. Photos don't work.

During night time though, you'd have to use the fingerprint reader.

I used to have to press the power button to get my envy out of sleep too, but now, i just noticed that all I have to do is open the lid and it wakes up. It seems a lot faster now to come out of sleep as well (2 seconds vs 10-15 seconds before).

The only thing I remembered doing was uninstalling all of the HP mediasmart bloatware, including the smartmenu stuff. If you haven't uninstalled that stuff yet, you might want to try that and see if it helps.

I'm deciding between the Vaio Z, Envy 14, Envy 13, and MBP 13. The Envy 13 and MBP 13 don't have the performance I'm looking for, so those are last resorts. But, how bad exactly is the Vaio Z in terms of screen flex? Did you get the Metal Mosaic option?

I'm just curious about this. Whenever I toggle hardware virtualization in my BIOS and exit&save, my computer shuts off for about 30 seconds before I can turn it back on. It's a negligible issue but does it happen to everyone else?

I'm interested in this also, the screen looks great but even in low light environments reflections are a problem with anything dark on the screen.

I'm probably going try those ViewGuard things before my 21 days runs out, so I'll report back if I get to that. I guess I'll have to try something for a 15.6" screen, since 14.5" is pretty uncommon?

to anyone who had issues with their Envy:
I have contacted HP support many times and here are the problems that were not fixed by the methods provided by HP.
    1. screen brightness control (fn + f2/f3) not working after resuming from sleep/hibernation *( the AC adapter disconnected)
*HP support suggested I update BIOS to the latest version(did not fix), also to reinstall ACPI Fixed Feature Button using Device Manager, under System devices (did not fix either).
    2. screen blinks for a second (turns black and comes back on) when right-click on the desktop background after resuming from sleep/hibernation. I don't know what the issue is. I've contacted HP support but didn't get a reply.
    3. In the BIOS setup, turning off "Fan Always On" option does nothing. Fan starts running from the push of power button.
Please help me fix these issues. I love the laptop. I would hate to return it.

I didn't want to sign up but this comment that inkwell says may very well be true. I actually received a call from the HP research dept asking about my envy and my report of whine. I told the caller that I had already sent in my envy for repair. He said sorry to bother you and said goodbye.

Is this how the other RMAs with BCB worked?

2 Dimm performs about 5% faster. You'd have to find another stick of ram to make the 1 Dimm perform the same.

There is no best brand, though I'd personally avoid the no-namers as I'd much rather not have to go through the hassle of RMAs for duds.

Corsair, Crucial, OCZ, and Mushkin seem decent. But if my 4gb stick turns out to be a Samsung, I'm just going to get a matched one off of eBay. Samsung sells important parts of DRAM sticks to the 4 brands listed above who rebrand and attach their own components to the parts. I'd expect Samsung RAM to be equally reliable.
