Well, seems my Samsung 256GB is without TRIM.

That really just ticks me off. There is no excuse for any SSD manufactured this calendar year that doesn't have TRIM enabled. So I guess some Samsungs do, some don't even with the same firmware. Not sure how that's even possible.

I guess I'll be on the phone tomorrow trying to explain to some yahoo CSR what TRIM means and why I need them to replace only the SSD and not the whole dang machine.

Does Samsung even have a garbage collection utility?

I'm pretty sure the other dude's firmware is newer than the one already flashed on our drives despite the cryptic versioning scheme. I'm going to try to update the firmware on my drive in the next day or so.

Did you call technical support to tell them about your whine? If possible, I would love to have my whine fixed cause that appears to be the only thing wrong with my E14. If they offer to give me a better E14 that'd be even better.

Argh, I wait for reviews to come out and they go and raise the price of the Radiance screen. Probably still worth it, since I don't see any other laptops near this size and resolution and price, but very annoying. Wonder if enough people complain like they did for the CPU upgrade options they'll lower the price of the Radiance to $100.

Update it with what? If HP has firmware released for the SSD then I'll try that. But otherwise from what I've been reading, Dell Samsung 256GB SSD's have been marginally effective, and many have bricked their SSD's. If HP gives us a utility I'm more than happy to oblige. Apparently it will blow away all data on your drive though, but not a big deal for me as long as they issue an update soon.

    edit: Nevermind, firmware IS different:

there's a whole 'nother topic for the gpu stuff and HP never gives a straight answer and in the end it's not gonna be resolved ever since well....it won't. it's part of the motherboard.

they'd have to redesign the computer.

so maybe envy 14 gen 2. but *shrugs* not for ours. oh well. big whoop.

Yeah, so I wonder if joshmcx updated the firmware himself or if he got it that way from HP. I had in my mind that we would be able to easily update the firmware because of this post I'd seen in the original Owners lounge thread.

I called the envy support line and asked to have it repaired because I didn't have the time line to RMA due to college. I was also happy with my case due to only a small credit card thick gap between touch pad and palm rest. However i doubt it will be fixed and will end up RMA'ing it.

That firmware is specific to HP hence the "H" in 1A H1Q, Dell has a D there, etc.

On chat right now with what seems a reasonable tech. He's checking on getting the firmware and a way to update it.

edit: LOL. He says: "TRIM feature is an additional feature that is available on SSD's. This feature does not improve the performance of the SSD. This is a feature which by operating system can wipe the data completely from the hard disk when it is deleted or formatted."

"As of now, there is no firmware update available for the Samsung MMDOE56G5MXP-0VB Hard drive."

So my laptop came with the HP logo messed up as some remember. I've since traveled with my laptop, and when I took it out of the case, I noticed that it was even more messed up than before! lol! I figured out that if I shake it around a little, the backlight thing is loose inside the display and can slide around. Here's a pic of how it came:

As you can see, it's only slightly off, wasn't a big deal
But here's what it looks like now:

not even half the backlight circle is visible. Terrible.

On another note, does everyone's display flex this much when pushed down? I didn't notice this at first but it seems to be very flexible.
YouTube - HP ENVY 14 logo issue (and display flex?)

(BTW I'm returning this laptop, another order is in production now, so hopefully my new one comes with none of these issues)

Ok, a few questions. The fan on my system is fairly noisy and it seems be on all of the time. It's a 520m.

I can't really stand the touch pad. Two finger scrolling is completely worthless and whenever I try to right click I have to click down hard which tends to move the cursor since the entire thing including the buttons is a trackpad. Is there a way to fix this? I may return it for this reason alone...

Also, I'm confused about the whole SSD Trim thing for the samsung 256gb drive. I checked mine out and it says that I don't have trim... Is there a way to enable it and is it that important?

And finally, does anyone else have a gap at the front of the laptop where the silver meets the gray? It's small, but I can imagine it getting dirty and being unable to clean it since it's right there.

    Thanks for the info everyone!

Yes, it's important. Think of it as a sort of defrag for SSDs. Without it the write performance degrades significantly over time.

Yeah, Donut3 also has a non TRIM Samsung SSD:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...marks-brands-news-advice-597.html#post6538566

I hope they just let us update the firmware. I don't want to deal with any physical exchange if I can help it. But an SSD exchange would be fine I guess as long as its a cross shipment.

I mean, anything manufactured this year should all be TRIM enabled. SSD's are pretty much useless without it, and Samsung doesn't even offer a garbage collection tool we can run manually either.

Just finished online chat with tech support. They said the problem was probably due to the CPU fan. They recommend: 1. hard reset. 2. Update bios. 3. Reinstall the Power Management.

Unfortunately this did not fix the problem for me and they said I'll probably have to send it in to have it fixed. But I will call tech support later on and hope that I get a phone call from HP research department. Just for giggles.

    SO i have a problem.

When i play a video game and i do not mute my computer it will freeze after a while. This ONLY happens when its not muted. Makes no sense to me.

This happens on Alien Swam, TF2, however it does not happen on league of legends.

Specs in the sig, not a fresh install.

This is really funny because I clearly stated the whine was not a fan related problem, yet on my Service Order the problem was stated as a fan noise. I called the envy support line again and restated the problem and they said that the notes stated the cause of the whine, but because it was already under repair, the claim would need to be escalated, which I seriously don't think happened. Also wait for research dept. call before return/repair. As I said earlier I got the call but didn't get any details once I told the rep I sent it in. Here's to hoping I get to be a surprise guinea pig.

This may be answered already. No need to open it up just use CPU-Z and the 'SPD' tab, gives you brand, P/N and timings... Or for even more detail try the 30 trial of Everest it's a great app with benchmarks, burn in tests, and even CPU power draw etc. etc. It gives you more system info than all the other free apps combined.

Strange request. Does anyone know whether HP offers extra screws? It seems to me my Envy is missing 2 small screws for the larger bottom plate. I'm reluctant to RMA it, but if I have to, I'll do it.
