Aarrggh.. I have OCD when it comes to laptop screens and there's some kind of dust on the inside of the laptop screen?
Like the smallest dust bunny imaginable that you can only see when the laptop is off, but still. I know it's there....

Those should be about normal for light usage. You need to check Task Manager > Processes tab > click the "CPU" text at the top of the CPU column and it will show what is using your CPU in the backround. After you complete a task it should drop to 0% usage in 1 th 2 seconds....

Not to make you jealous but here is my i5 540M temps after a few hours of light work:

    i5 540M temps.PNG

Probably much lower than the E 14 due to the 2 dedicated fans for the CPU and a seperate GPU fan, plus the Intel IGP is not being used at all (no switchable graphics).

Can someone tell me if the card reader on the E14 allows an SD card to sit flush with the notebook exterior when installed, or does it stick out a bit?

It's not totally flush. I mean why would it be?
It sticks out a little. It really isn't that big a problem. If it wasn't totally dark right now I'd break out a ruler and measure the amount that it sticks out for you. But really its nothing.

in other news I have discovered the dark side to switchable graphics.

damn radeon 5650 didn't fully wake up and was maxing out at 300/300.

rebooting fixed it. I swapped to dedicated shortly after the first time I booted up from being on battery til like 20% so *shrugs* who knows why it didn't work right.

How are your temps so low honestly??
I have 69 processes running (Honestly. I do.)
My CPU usage is just about 5%
    And Physical Memory about 38%

Yet my temps for the CPU are about 95 degrees Farenheit!
Laptop still feels cool tho. So its not too bad but still.

Thanks, sounds like it'll be ok. I just prefer to stick in an SD card and leave it in during transit. If the cards stick out too much it worries me that the reader may get damaged if something bumps the card. I've had some readers that allowed the card to sit almost flush and others that half the card sticks out.

It's just a minor convenience factor to not have to take the card out before bagging the notebook.

yeah the card sticks out only enough for you to push it in a second time to eject it.

I kinda forgot I had that 2gig sd card they give you in there for the past week.

Good night all... I'm going to bed frustrated. My Samsung SSD has no TRIM, but seems the newer systems have it. Waiting for a rep to get back to me on what they can do about firmware update or exchanging SSD. I feel I can't really use my machine too much because either a firmware update or exchange will force me to do another fresh install. sigh.

Yeah I know what you mean, my last laptop would get bounced around a bit and the SD card would be ejected after awhile. But the card reader is a lot better on the HP Envy. It should be fine. Especially if you use a laptop bag or something like that as I do now.

Interestingly if anyone wants to know the Incase 15 inch MBP messenger bag fits the Envy 14 perfectly. :D. All the perks of having an MBP without having to go OSX. Though I'm pretty sure OSX86 will support the Envy 14 in a bit.

Yes, I know. My temps typically run into the 40s and I'm missing 2 screws. Others are posting low 30s, so about 10 degrees lower.

*checks something* you checking your temps plugged in or on battery.

'cause plugged in with the 5650 turned on I get 41/42 C for the cpu and 49-50 for the GPU

Maybe I didn't clarify completely, first of all I have an envy 15 with a much better cooling system (3 fans) and I have only 49 processes running at boot up. Also if your cpu is at 5% when your not doing anything then you ahve some serious backround activity going on, it should drop to 0% within a second or two after completing any task and then it may occasionally blip up to 1 - 3% for a second or two, anything more and you have things using your cpu that shouldn't be....

BTW, 95F is by no means anything to worry about, what the 5% usage will do is kill your battery life, the temps you have are not an issue.

The 5% was because I was chatting with Digsby. My CPU does go idle but at the time it wasn't completely idle.

Temperature and such have never been my strong suits with computers but I guess its just a learning experience.

If I might ask, have you done any playing around in speeding up Windows boot time? Mainly disabling Windows services?

    @ColdHeat

Yes, quite a bit of tweaks since I have SSD's. My boot time is down to 18 seconds and my full restart time is 24 seconds.

This ' guide' has some good tips and tweaks to reduce boot times. Use caution and make sure to set a restore point before trying some of the advanced stuff....

Edit; forgot to add the link above, oops

Edit 2: My boot time was ~ 24 seconds and when the F 2A BIOS came out it mysteriously dropped the post time by 6 seconds on the envy 15, somone with an envy 14 and SSD tested the post time and it did not get the 6 second reduction for some reason, he was at like 30 seconds IIRC. So I guess you shouldn't expect to get as quick of boot up as I am.

Well. A little perusing through the manual shows I am indeed missing two "Phillips PM2.0x3.0" screws that line the bigger bottom plate. Replacing it will require I pay $43 for a complete misc screw replacement kit or look on Craigslist for dead HP notebooks. I am majorly pissed. In order to make sure I don't lose any of my BCB dollars from demanding a partial refund, I'll have to demand at least $62.

HP, until now, I had moral qualms about forcibly asking for my money back. But now that you've gotten me mad, I'm going to gun for a $100 rebate this monday.

EDIT: Found a broken notebook seller on CL. I'm bored. I'll give them a phone call tomorrow to see whether I can salvage it.

    @zeth006

Just call a fastener specialty company and order the screws, you have the dimensions in your manual, I bet the postage will cost more than the screws, unless they have a minimum order. A large regional fasterner company in the NW is Tacoma Screw Products, Inc. :: Main, I order oddball fasteners all the time that I can't find in Alaska.

So last I heard, some HP Techs are working on the whine right. I sent my envy in for repair due to whine, and I want to make sure that HP is actively pursuing a fix/investigation for better feed back if I contact them again. Please any info would help.

I remember reading a post, may have been in the original owners thread, about someone contacting HP and receiving a response that some techs were working on it. I talked to a envy support rep who at first said she knew nothing of the whine and after talking to a supervisor said that HP techs are working on it. I'm pretty sure this was in reference to the whine but later on my CSO order I saw where the rep had entered the problem as fan noise so I don't know if she misunderstood and thought fan cycling.

Found a broken laptop listing about a 20 minute drive from where I live. I'm on a time constraint, so I'm going to just have to drive over there tomorrow and pick it up.

Any advice on how to deal with a broken laptop being sold on Craigslist? I'm for sure only bringing the amount the laptop's worth and meeting at a public location.

I remembere reading a long time ago, in the first or second owners lounges for the 14, that white noise is present in the audio, if youre using headphones with a really low Ampedence (or somthing like that). Im getting that noise. Is there a fix for this, or do I have to live with it. This thing is suppose to have good audio, but i know "Beats" is uselesss.

(kidding- I have a legal clone of an OSX install that <s>runs</s> works fine in VMware, I don't need to hackintosh it)

The first time I leave this thread for a couple days I miss getting a free pair of awesome IEMs :(

EDIT: that got me thinking... since the envy 17 has a Blu-ray slot load drive... then it should easily work on the envy 14.. right? or is the envy 17 drive thicker??

Sorry guys! I already sent it back! I needed that money back on my card ASAP. :(

As you stated, I never touched the firmware. That's exactly how the thing came. I didn't even touch any of the bloatware loaded on the system. It arrived 7/30 with a build date about 4 days earlier, so assuming they fixed something and new SSD's should be good (and have TRIM) now.

It sucks cause josh replied that his came with the right firmware but his arrived on 7/30. Mine had a build date of 7/22. This rollout has been quite messy from HP. I'll try contacting them too about getting the new firmware since I am also holding off doing a clean install until I get that.

Does anyone have any idea what to do about this?? Can HP do anything??
