the difference between top notch and 2nd to top notch is a whole lot! (for the envy) :)

It drove me nuts in the pictures. However in real life they do not look flowery at all (in pictures it decisively DOES), and I've actually come to love the pattern. Makes the palmrests feel nicer too.

Trying to do a clean install to Win7 Ultimate x64 from Win7 Home Premium x64: *I've read the 1st pg of this thread but a question about partitions. Is the SYSTEM partition something I should get rid of? I see two partitions: Local Drive and SYSTEM. (I have gotten rid of RECOVERY and HP TOOLS) And if I do get rid of both (format and delete) I would end up with 1 unallocated partition, right?

Yeah, it will merge them into one big unallocated partition.

Ok. I'm talking to an HP CSR right now. Wait-time was short. But check this out:

In order for them to replace the screws, I have the option of RMA'ing or creating a new order. Either option would waste them $100+ bucks when they could just send me a screw replacement kit for $40 or less or just send me the 2 screws for a few pennies!

EDIT: Someone's pulling my leg. They claimed they could recover my BCB.

Oh well. CSR gave me $70.

Honestly, I would've been just as happy if HP had sent me the 2 replacement screws and spent $5 total to do so instead of crediting me back $70 just to prevent an RMA. Inflexibility I tell you!

Ive noticed that when I am on battery power and doing light use the fans keep going on and off non stop. Has anyone turned gone into the BIOS and turned "off" where it says fan always on? Does that have any effect?

Just got off the phone with HP concerning the whine. Tech support said that's not suppose to happen and an exchange is in order.

    So if that helps anyone...

Do note that an exchange will take 3 weeks during which time you won't have a computer.

same here. but I experienced the fans going on and off when switched to integrated graphics. when running dedicated, fans are always on. even with BIOS Fan Always On option turned off. so no effect so far.

Trying to do a clean install to Win7 Ultimate x64 in hopes of faster/bloatware-free laptop:
*I've read the 1st help pg of HP Envy 14 thread but a question about partitions. I see two partitions: Local Drive and SYSTEM. (I have gotten rid of RECOVERY and HP TOOLS)

    1. Is the SYSTEM partition something I should get rid of?

    2. What's on it? (I did some research and it is something NO ONE should touch)

    3. The clean install help link didn't really help me, since it is not directly referring to HP Envy 14's. I've had issues with my old HP dm4t clean install to Win7 Ultimate and failed terribly with drivers and all so I'm trying to be sure.

Just go to the page with all the E14 drivers and install them down the list. You might want to skip over the ones that are optional.

Which one? I visited BestBuy's Geek Squad. I visited Home Depot. I visited OfficeMax. I even visited Walmart! Any suggestions?

The screw I'm looking at is HP's very own proprietary screw named PM2.0x3.0 sourced by Phillips. eBay doesn't have them and I've found may no-name 4-5 websites that sell screw packs for $30.

If you're going to ask whether I'm being obsessive, the answer is YES. If I can't solve the problem by Monday, I'm RMA'ing my unit. It came with two tiny nicks and I don't like where the temps go.

There's a reason for that: I don't know anything about that.

Would you rather I give you misinformation? I can do that:
Just delete everything on your harddrive before doing a clean install. Anything that HP gives you is . Hell you can just RMA your E14 and say "I'm RMA-ing because you're giving my sh-y I don't want. Until you decide to not load each and every laptop with useless software, I choose to boycott your products."

    Was that of any help?

    Justos, a few things:

    1. Two-finger scrolling along with clicking and dragging the cursor around are fluid and nice if you
    a. Update the drivers show on page 1 and
    b. Use the revised Google Code shown on page 1

    2. I like you and all. You seem pretty cool. But that comment right there was utter epic phail. Real gamers don't use touchpads.

    For you:

    And for derpderp and htwingnut:

barring that write down the type of screws you need and custom order 'em from somewhere if you can't find 'em at ace hardware or something.

though ace hardware is apparently just a florida chain of hardware stores so *shrugs*

I have about an hour and a half before my dinner get together. I'll give 'em a call.

Any suggestions on were I can custom order them? I'm willing to pay some of the cash I got back from HP to get them. That other website you listed the other day doesn't have them.

Why can't screws just be standardized instead of allowing for proprietary measurements to pop up!

EDIT: Ace Hardware doesn't have them on their website. They're a competitor to Home Depot, so they probably don't do electronics screws, especially HP screws.

Problem: My notebook besides the screws and the two teeny weeny nicks is near-perfect. The touchpad is actually flush with palmrest and when I take into account other flaws people encountered, I'll willingly put up with higher temps as I'm planning to buy a Square Trade Warranty anyway!

I guess you could just spend $40 and have some extras or rma and get a new one (kinda overkill for two screws

ok. the screws are actually standard...well standard by the ISO metric screw thread.

It is a Philips Metric 3.0x2.0 screw. or PM 3.0x2.0 or PM 3x2

edit: I have no clue where you'd buy two though....may just have to check at some hardware store or something.

I called 866-408-5408 which is the HDX, Envy, touchsmart and the firebird hotline.

Exchange is slower than RMA and reordering. If i exchange I'll get it sometime the week of 23. By reordering, I can get the new E14 by the 20th at the latest. I kinda want to reorder but since I paid with my moms credit card (cause it's an AmEx), I'll need to talk it over with her.

That's what I'm leaning to as well Tee.Kay. But with the price increase cause Radiance is no longer standard and my $100 credit for not cancelling might not carry over. And reorder -> RMA might not go so well with BCB. So I might just have to go exchange and stick with a 3 going 4 year old Vaio NR (the cheapest vaio they will ever make).

Wow you were lucky to find someone who understood the whine. I was just told to send it into repair. Supposed to be back on Weds. but I highly doubt it was fixed due to your comment of an exchange. Hopefully the HP techs didn't mess with my envy and screw it up. Will probably RMA the next day if still present.

Yea, I didn't use BCB, did get a $200 credit though after the fact, and she assured me that they would give that to me once the new one shipped. My 5% fatwallet is questionable though, but eh, who cares.

Edit: dam steelcloud, I ordered july 5th and got it on the 19th...can't believe you haven't gotten yours yet, that's awful
