    *shrugs* it's the right dimensions

    it's philips head.

only thing that's weird is RC18T

...which might mean it's screws for some sort of RC toy.

also you could just blow $6 and try 'em. otherwise don't bother and just order the screw set for $86 or rma your computer or yell at hp forever and ever til they send you your two damn screws.

I see them on eBay. I'll go through those guys this Monday and have the seller ship them to my new shipping address. Thanks for the tipoff and repped even if it turns out to be the wrong size.

theoretically it should work since it is the same dimensions.

but I mean....the manual could be wrong or the screws could be a bit longer. who the hell knows.

still. it's 6 bucks. try it out

The manual hopefully just uses a different naming scheme. I checked other HP notebooks being sold on CL for parts and it seems as though PM2.0x3.0 is a common one utilized over the years.

$3.68 for a pack of 15 is an obvious choice over paying $4+ for 2 of them.

Judging from the terms used in the eBay listings, it seems as though m2x3 is a very common one for HP notebooks. I'm hoping it's the right one. It's $3 for a

    From one eBay ad:

I'm more hopeful now as another HP laptop manual had its bluetooth module screwed in using the PM2.0x3.0.

Guess it's settled. Making one order this Monday after I call housing services to determine my mailing address.

Does that HP-help program that can be brought up with F1 freeze anyone else's computer? It freezes all the open windows I have.

A clean install is definitely in my near future.

How long is the standard warranty that comes with the computer? Is it still possible for me to buy the extended warranty?

Also, has anyone else had issues with the f2 button (lower brightness) freezing internet explorer or any other open windows? I can't figure out why it is doing this.

Are you on default E14 W7 with all the bloatware? it shouldn't be like that, the program that control those stuff is HP quicklaunch, you might want to re-install it and see if it fixed the issue.

It's not HP proprietry, LMAO. That number is an industry standard descriptive designation. It mean Phillips (P) Metric (M) 2mm (2.0) by (x) 3mm (3.0), and it is not 'sourced by Phillips' (LMAO again) it is a Phillips head screw, as in you need a phillips screwdriver. Simply take one of the other screws out and take that to a real hardware store or a fastener specialty store and have them match it up to what they have. Or even easier use a phone book and call around, with all the time you have spent typing posts, calling HP and complaining you could have had the screws in hand or in the mail.

But hardware stores most likely will not carry these kinds of screws. You will need to go to a PC or electronics repair shop. No hardware store would carry such a small fastener, metric no less (at lest in USA). I've tried desperately for similar type screws in the past and had to buy a small electronic part that I found had the same damn screws.

Hey guys, I added a quick Youtube Video with some initial impressions after using my Envy 14 for ~5days. I compare it a bit with a Macbook Pro 13 (thickness, screen, etc.) and show the Envy 14's "unique" feature to output to 2 external monitors at once:

YouTube - HP Envy 14 Initial Impressions

Please check it out and if you're interested here's an unboxing video I made too:

While the computer geek in me says "wow" to the overall look and feel of the laptop, the engineering side of me says they didn't follow best practice as far as maintaining gaps and flushness. It's like they tried to perfectly line up the trackpad with the opening on the shell and still try to keep flushness and maintain horizontal and vertical centering. There should have been a lip above or below the trackpad to hide gaps, as well as a slight bump following the periphery of the trackpad to elimiate any overflush or underflush.

This also translates across the laptop in several areas that I notice. They do a remarkably good job at it though, but probably why they are having such huge difficulties in maintaining a high percentage of good builds. I'd hate to look at the GD&T for this machine. They must have had a college intern sign off on it!

For me it was only with USB devices, but I tried to get it repaired because I'm going to college in the middle of Aug. I'll probably have to RMA it since the whine will most likely persist.

Great insight but I can't understand how if this case is machined by a robotic mill why there would be gaps when tolerances can reach the hundredths of a mm.

The opening may be toleranced to within fractions of a mm, but manufacturing tolerances are not quite so tight. Only if you had a unibody like a Mac could you get away with it.

It is very expensive to maintain tolerances within hundredths and thousandths of a mm. Machine programmers and engineers have to work harder to achieve the necessary consistency with the program, machine, tool, and jig combinations on the front end. High fidelity machines cost more. Machines must be re-adjusted at shorter intervals and tools must be replaced more often. Tools designed to maintain higher tolerances also cost hundreds of dollars more than lower spec tools. Machine operators capable of running parts with tight spec limits also get paid more.
(Programming automated machines paid for my last two years of college.)

Ultimately, having no noticeable gaps would probably translate to about $100, give or take a bit, more per machine. I would be willing to pay that for flawlessness.

At the same time, very few manufacturers understand how to engineer quality into products. Instead, they still practice the age old technique of: build a part, inspect it, decide if it goes to the customer or gets reworked/recycled. This process is about 10 times more expensive in the long term compared to the short term expense of up-front quality engineering.
(Quality engineering pays my bills now.)

Strange...good thing you mention this, I always use Logitech USB device on my E14 and I just tried to unplug it and there is no whine. Seems to be my unit does the same thing as your second unit.

I'm not sure if I use BT mouse the whine will be fixed. If it does, I will definitely getting a BT mouse...Logitech M555b probably.

Does anyone know if any US stores carry the Envy 14 yet, or will before the end of August? I'm thinking if I want to get it before classes start I'll have to order it next week, but if it's available in stores I can delay it longer in hopes of a better deal.

It never hurts to have one, especially if you like to game on your lap.

That being said, this is a cool running notebook with the i5, I even played SC2 for an hour with it directly on my lap and the temps were still fine. I just made sure not to block the vents

Im having problems with the battery cover :( The little latch thats sposed to slide and free the cover seems to be jammed.

Is the latch meant to slide all the way to the far side oposite the little battery when its closed? Because mine only seems get ~ 2mm from the side without the battery symbol.

And then it will only slide ~ 2mm towards the battery, even with quiet a bit of force. Any ideas on this one? i can see a few people have mentioned this, but haven't seen a solution as yet :S

    1. How is the frame rate on WoW? Can it play on Ultra?
    2. Has there been any word from HP about the high pitch noise the board is making?
    3. How are the temps while gaming?
