Unless there's some sort of driver issue, you should be able to adjust the cursor speed in the settings, as you can in Windows.

I think its ATI driver or the BIOS, I did the same thing too...I guess all we can do is wait for a BIOS and ATI driver update.

you can fix the legs. check to make sure one isn't out of place a bit.

if so carefully pull it off without losing all the sticky stuff and then place it back on correctly.

I had an extended online chat session with HP Tech Support late Friday evening about the Samsung SSD TRIM issue. They said it would be 24-48 hours when I should hear back from someone. Should I expect Saturday and Sunday to count, or just Saturday, or Monday and Tuesday? I just don't want the clock to keep ticking on this and miss a chance to get this resolved with the Samsung SSD in case I decide to do an exchange or return.

Well, I called right after I posted figuring I have nothing to lose. Just got off the phone 45 minutes later now, and they are going to send me a replacement drive, but they have no way to confirm it has updated firmware. I guess it's just cross fingers and pray.

I did ask if I could get an Intel in its place, but he sounded like it was asking to crucify a cow in a hindu temple. The Tech CSR this time was very good though, from Arkansas, actually grew up where I live, so I think he pushed a little extra hard to make this happen because previously I was told they won't exchange parts, I'd have to send the machine in for repair.

I guess if this one doesn't have TRIM, I'll have to figure out something else. I'm sure I could really push for an Intel drive. Otherwise I'll call Customer Resolution Center get my $100 minimum credit (they offered it without a hitch last time), sell my Samsung drive even for $300, and put that extra $100 towards an Intel 160GB.

If I feel brave I might try the retail firmware update using the method in the Alienware forums.

One more question, how do you do a secure erase on this Samsung SSD? Basically I understand there is a way to reset the firmware so it thinks all blocks are clear without actually passing all 1's over the drive.

I sure hope so. Discuss and vote at The Poll.

I'm getting a replacement shipped to me. If it has updated firmware, then I'll provide build date info as well as any part info if necessary so others can get it. I'm really really really hoping it will have TRIM.

    @htwingnut

Good to hear that you're making some progress with HP and TRIM support. Do you know if they're extending your last day to RMA? I would love to do the same thing you're doing, but it doesn't sound like there are any guarantees.

Lack of TRIM is on the short list of points against the Envy for me. Also on that list: fan/whine and trackpad.

Now that I've discovered the diagonal lines issue on my VAIO Z12, I may finally decide to stay with the Envy.

I too haven't found any resources on how to prolong the life of the SSD without TRIM. Any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks!

I haven't been following the SSD discussion in this thread, but could the SSDs without TRIM have their own internal garbage collection utility independent of the operating system? That appears to be the case on the Samsung (and probably Toshiba) drives in the Vaio Z11s and Z12s. Those drives can't use TRIM because they're in RAID 0, but there does seem to be a mechanism at work preventing degradation.

Unlikely. Seems many Samsung drive owners have had performance degredation with their Samsungs over time, showing there is no GC at work.

If you search for any 256GB Samsung drive seems none have TRIM support that I can tell either. At this point in time this is a long shot. Other than the one user that posted theirs had it and had a crystal disk info screenshot to prove it, none other have had it.

I might be wrong. It seems there's a tech that Samsung calls "self-healing", where it recovers the empty cells while the system is idle. TRIM can't hurt but apparently not necessary.

They did some testing on the Vaio Z's showing almost 90% recovery of write performance. I may do some similar testing myself. Also appears this is why the drive is used with Macbooks because Mac OS doesn't support the TRIM command.

Maybe its not such a big deal after all. I'll see what I can figure out.

It has my OCZ Vertex 60GB I bought something like a year ago. >_>

It's running the latest firmware (1.6) which has TRIM and improved idle-time garbage collection.

It's limited on space, though, so I have to cut out some Windows stuff that I never use (hibernate, for example).

Still considering swapping the optical drive for the hard drive, if carrying it in an external enclosure proves too annoying.

Tried to update my ATI driver (to ATI 10.7) as suggested in the first page of this thread. During installation the screen went black. Waited a couple of minutes and then restarted it, the screen is black again. Restarted again, and it's the same story. What should I do?

Have been reading the forums since part I. Ordered on July 17th and received the Envy on July 29th. All is as it should be--no missing screws, no whines that I can hear, flush trackpad, good screen. The machine is heavier than I had thought it would be but that seems to indicate a sturdy build. The display is excellent but hate the trackpad; hate all trackpads so just use a wireless mouse.

My first laptop so have nothing to compare it with. The keyboard is taking a bit of getting used to. Didn't do a clean install but after making the restore DVD's (only took about 90 minutes and DVD drive worked fine) I did delete the restore partition, deleted absolutely tons of the bloatware and got about 25 gigs back on the pricey SSD (Intel). Will consider a clean install at a later date but seems to be running pretty well for now.

So far the screen glare hasn't bothered me but I use it in a darkened room--might have to apply one of those anti-glare things if it gets to be a problem. I tried a few things I had here (hobby, printing sheets) and none of them worked. Wondering if the Viewguard sheets can be cut to fit. Intend to call them when I get time.

I too get that black screen after shutting the lid a while and when it comes on it says something about "User being locked" or something and have to switch users. Do all laptops do this?

Just wondering if anyone using the Samsung SSD has called Samsung to see what they have to say. I had to call them a while back about my cell phone as ATT was useless and the Samsung tech couldn't have been nicer nor more helpful. He was on the East Coast somewhere and solved the problem very quickly. First time I had ever called Samsung support although I have several of their products; thought the support was excellent. Might be worth a shot to see if they have any ideas on the TRIM situation.

By the way, I have named my computer P----.

OK, so go ahead and ban me--we all strive for more eP--- all the time! Consider me another satifsfied Envy 14 user--have already recommended it to my sister and a nephew.

    Later

It's so disappointing that BatteryBar is broken by the language bar in Windows.

I really liked the program, but switching between languages (Japanese, in my case, as the language bar gets significantly bigger) moves it, and it gets stuck.

I suppose I could submit it as a bug to the developer...

Went into BIOS and reinstalled the drivers. Everything seems to work okay now.

Received my Envy today. i5-450, 6gb RAM, 640gb HD, 1600-900 screen. So far satisfied with the build quality: feels very solid, flush touchpad with no gaps, no whine, minor keyboard flex when pressing hard, but a non-issue for me.

So something is totally wrong with either my Envy or my battery. I've been using BatteryBar, and even with integrated graphics, bluetooth off, and the "hp recommended" profile, I get 2:30 minutes of life web browsing. -18K mW right now

I can boost that to 3.5 hours with power saver and WiFi off as well, my system sitting totally idle. (task manager shows my CPU flat right now, typing this in in Firefox offline mode).

I have run the HP battery test, and it says my health is fine. Yet I can watch my battery sucked out of me right now. Latest version of BIOS (verified). Updated fully. What should I do?

HP, I hate you once again.

You'd think that if I was clearly upset the first time and RMA"d my first one, they'd read my comments and put a little more into the second one they send me.

    False.

My second machine has WORSE cpu whine, keyboard flex, off center HP light, track pad completely off center and can be clicked (with no click effect) in the middle...

Significantly worse than my first. I'm so disappointed right now I don't even know what to say.

I'm RMA'ing this second, then proceeding to never buy anything from HP again. I'll probably disappear off this forum, I just wanted to say how ridiculously disappointed I am and how useless I think it is to have to go through this process.

I highly DON'T recommend HP, or the Envy 14.

Honestly, a laptop shouldn't have worries or hassle the second it comes out of a box. The reason the Envy 14 seems so affordable for such a high quality model is because they cut corners and have terrible build quality.

    Useless.

With the one I sent back for an exchange and the E13 I saw in stores, you could click the center of the trackpad much like that of a Macbook, but it wouldnt register as a click. I believe other people have said this as well. I don't know why you're raging about it.

Is the keyboard flex pissing you off that badly? I think you are too caught up in your anger so your typing is more aggressive, thus noticing the flex.

I never knew there was a middle clicker until you mentioned it, and mine does nothing at all (not that I ever us it)

Anyways, I just had a chat support with HP about the CPU whine. He wanted me to send it in for diagnosis. Its not bothering me that bad for me to send it in. I guess I'll wait a few months to see how I can put up with it.
On my old HP dv6000, after 1.5 years of usage my wifi adapter died. After some online research, I found many users with the same issue and discovered an extended warranty just for that issue. Sent it in, and received a laptop with a new motherboard :d Maybe they'll replace something new for my troubles haha

I got my Envy 14 today, and while running through the HP Support Assistant I noticed that the firmware version number was F.06. The last I had heard, F.05 was the most recently released version.

Does anyone know what was updated in the F.06 release?

Maybe you won't see this, but I feel for you. I would send a politically correct letter to HP telling them to get bent and describe your issues. I agree that any laptop, regardless of cost, shouldn't have the issues this machine is having. And I also find it ridiculous that you have to order a whole new machine if it is a specific part that is easily replaceable (i.e. HDD, SSD, RAM, battery, etc) by the user.

It took a lot of pleading and persistence to get HP to ship me a replacement SSD. They just wanted me to get a replacement laptop. I absolutely didn't want to do that because I didn't want to risk my Bing Cashback or risk a crappy build because mine is actually really good.

Sorry for your troubles brother. Sorry to see you go also. :(

Hope you find a notebook that... is not like this one and that satisfies your needs and expectations.

For what it's worth, I feel for you.
