If you configure it straight from HP it would be $1,200 + tax.

Get a new cable I guess? I didn't realize my ethernet cord was dead until I switched it with my brother's and saw a pretty light come on at the port.

That's because YouTube has been lagging lately. I have Verizon FiOS at 20Mbps/20Mbps and the videos have been pausing to load quite a bit recently.

If the ethernet cable is working, the ethernet port lights up with a white bulb. Same color as the backlit keyboard.

On another note, is anyone else's power brick clicking? Mine is making this clicking/tapping noise. It sounds like "dit dit dit dit..."

Sometimes you can hear it from a foot away and sometimes it's kinda soft so you'd have to have your ear next to it. But once you hear it, you kinda notice it all the time.

So i also have a samsung (256gb) ssd with no TRIM. It's very upsetting. I ordered when the 30% BCB was live (if you wanted to know when i got it). So has there been any progress on the TRIM matter? if so, what do i do? And if not, if someone would to be so kind as to PM me if they do make some progress in the near/distant future that would be awesome.

Does anyone know how to re-enable the bluetooth again after it's been disabled? I did a clean install when I got my Envy on Friday and some how I managed to disable the bluetooth where it doesn't show up in device manager under Network Adapters anymore. Everything else works just fine and I'm going crazy trying to figure out how to get the bluetooth working again.

    1. You can try downloading the driver for it and hope it appears or
    2. You can install HP wireless assistant. That should be able to turn on and off your bluetooth.

Well I saved the swsetup folder before I did a clean install and when I try to install the driver via the setup file it just stops itself and says no bluetooth device detected. WHen I go into the Win64 folder and try that way it installs the driver but bluetooth stil never shows up. I also grabbed the driver from the Drivers thread and tried it that way but it just says no Buetooth device detected.

I tried to install wireless assistant but it also fails and says "This version of Hp wireless assistant is not supported on this model. Please download and install the correct version from www.hp.com". Wifi is working just fine but I have no clue how I screwed the bluetooth up

all I can say is try to reboot after installing the drivers from the inf while leaving wifi turned on.

or put it to sleep and wake it up from that after drivers are installed and wifi is turned on.

one of those two got my bluetooth to randomly show up.

And to think I ordered a i5-450, and 500GB HDD, and paid only 900 2 weeks ago.
Without the discount it was 1200.... Why HP you bumped the price 100!

So if you don't care about switching out batteries after putting your computer in hibernation.....is there any advantage to the 6 cell "slim fit" battery? Because for some reason it costs $200 while 2 8 cells costs $75....which is confusing because you get 16 cells for $75 and 14 cells for $200.

Nope, unless you consider a slight watt-hour increase worthwhile. The watt-hour is what matters to most people. There may be advantages to more cells that I don't know about (but regardless in most cases you want the watt-hour rather than cells).

If you need more than 4-5h battery and don't mind switching the batteries in hibernate, get the 8-cell.

I had this problem too. I ended up installing the HP wireless assistant (HPWA) from the original SwSetup folder. Then I started that and nothing happened. It wasn't until I put it to sleep and woke it up again like MagusDraco suggested that suddenly WA was open and I could enable bluetooth. Then windows saw it and installed the driver.

    Hi there,

I know many will not like this question but anyone managed to install Windows XP in Envy 14? If so, could you share the drivers? I know HP provided XP drivers for Envy 15 series but not for Envy 14.

    Thank you

The Momentus XT will absolutely fit into the Envy 14, as it's the standard notebook hard drive size.

You'll still be covered under warranty, but I'm unsure about the hard drive you removed. Either way, you could just put it back in the Envy 14 if it died, there's obviously no way HP could tell. That being said, don't be irresponsible with the hard drive if you take it out, hard drives are delicate. :)

I know right?! That's like, OMG, so Windows 98 or something. Gah! :p

*Clearing throat for impending serious tone.

In any event, one doesn't need Win 7 Pro for XP. They can run VirtualBox for free. It's arguably better VM also.

Yes. Problem is that you will (*ahem* or should) need a valid XP license with VirtualBox for an XP load. With Windows 7 Pro that is included with that license. But from my experience VirtualBox is the better option.

And a 500 cell battery made up of rechargable watch-cells would be both insanely expensive and utterly pointless. It would not give you 80x the battery life of the 6. It would just be one large battery made up of 500 smaller cells.
Watt hours are an accurate indicator of battery life, not how divided the battery is.

And to answer your question: the difference in capacity is less than 5 minutes worth of battery life. You can price match the $200 for the slice down to $150 or order it seperately from the parts store for that price. The part number is 602410-001
I only got the slice because of the ~$100 price tag with bcb and the $50 price match.
I'd go with the additional internal battery as it's much cheaper than buying it seperately.

Ughhh I got my second envy that i bought with BCB and everything is perfect but it has a slight wobble on the front left hand side. Is there an easy way to take off the leg and re-fit? It is just wide enough where I can slide a paper under it..

Okey dokes. Tomorrow, it's down to reversing an idiotically duplicated apartment deposit and and ordering some screws on eBay once I find out my new addy. Enjoying the Envy so far, but still a tiny bit tempted to RMA to see whether I'll get a non-whiney one.

So I have my Envy and I have no whine! I've been using it for about a week and really like the laptop! Its a great size, the screen is amazing, the keyboard is a joy to type on and I can play tf2 all night long.

That being said I have a few questions/problems.

When doing anything intense, the right side of the laptop and above the keyboard on the right gets really hot. I mean burning. Is this happening to everyone else?

On the right side just above the keyboard I feel like the casing is just a bit raised. Like there is a very small bump.Like I feel like I can notice it but other people think I am crazy. Anyone have this?

How do I know if my video card is doing as well as it should. Is there a performance thing I can run that lets me know that my laptop is performing how it should? If so what is it called?

    Thanks everyone!

is there any way to quick switch? Like I would like to have the keys there for when I am just around the desktop but when I am playing a game I need them to not do the specific functions. Having to go in and out of BIOS to do that is quite annoying.

Currently online with customer service completing an exchange because of the whine (mostly cause my sister lent me her laptop for my class).

If you can't stand the whine, call tech support and tell them about the problem. After they determine it's a problem with the laptop, they'll transfer you to home and home office to make an exchange. Do note it will take about 17days for them to finish making the laptop and they say you will get it in 2 business days.

Nope. It's either have it or you don't. I think you can just use fn+f1-12 keys to do the same thing as action keys. You'd just need to push an extra button.

If you're concerned about Bing Cash Back being voided, HP says: "08:03:36 Julia A
Actually, any returns void cashback. However, customers who have exchanged an order due to a technical issue or defect (non buyer's remorse) can still have their cashback honored by contacting MSN at [email protected] and providing all HHO order #s associated."

Since this is a technical issue/defect, BCB will not be voided.

And if you bought a sleeve and think that it's stupid that you won't be able to return it if you end up not having the envy 14, from "08:07:21 Julia A
That is not an issue. Everything is documented here, so we can check on that in case of a return of the sleeve." I'm guessing that it's okay to return even if your return period is over because well, you didn't have your laptop for most of the time during the return period.

Hope my assumptions aren't false and it helped another.

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my Envy 14 and everything is great except the trackpad is a little jumpy and insane. Is there any way I can fix this?

I've just discovered that what I thought were simply blemishes on the top edge on the outer rim is actually a series of gaps that is thick enough to slide a piece of paper in. I don't want to exchange it due to the chance that my BCB might be canceled so I'll have to bear with it. I can't take any pictures at the moment. Just wanted to note this because I'm sure this is a rare occurrence.

EDIT: Alright, it's actually paint discolorations along with the gap. Guess it was a rush job putting this piece together.

I have no idea what happened in the last 50 pages or so, but:

Having returned from abroad, I've now spent a good 10 or so hours playing StarCraft II on my desktop while clean installing and all my Envy 14. (2nd batch? July 22nd ish people)

I made sure to screenshot the Synaptics settings on my touchpad before clean install, and they were identical to the settings after clean install. The settings weren't even very good, as I didn't like the feel of the touchpad at all. I've got it going a bit better, but I see now why people complain about 3 fingers (one on left button, one on right, and one on the large area = almost instant disaster).

Clean install = only 2 unknown devices. One is Intel Engine Management(?), the other is HP 3D Guard Sensor.

I have a slight gap on the left of my touchpad which I noticed last night by light reflecting off the inside, but during the day it doesn't seem noticeable. My touchpad however is completely flush. Pushing left/right buttons makes the bottom corners depress a bit, at which point the touchpad is no longer flush. But my touchpad is flush. Just to add to the old discussion.

I don't have any issues with the headphone-out. My headphones I used on my dv3t sound even better on Envy 14 I think. No white noise. Speakers are just decent, but keep in mind many laptops have mediocre speakers.

My ethernet port is not upside down? I thought some people said it was.

Haven't tried gaming on my Envy 14 yet, but will migrate from desktop to E14 soon.

I am kind of disappointed with the island-style keyboard though. I visited my local Fry's a couple months ago to try the new keyboards in the dv5,6,7, etc.. Now, however, I find I keep missing a couple of keys, because I'm not pressing long/hard enough? If you're looking for flex you'll find flex, but I find with normal typing technique, the P doesn't cause flex.
