I'm sad. I didn't jump on the 30% BCB because I wanted reviews.
Not I want to buy but there is no BCB, which is a bummer but not a huge factor...
But now they raised the price of the Radiance screen, no good.
I'm going to wait till the screen matches the original price $1099

He already shipped it to HP. It is currently in HP's possession. He's complaining about how he was lied to about when he would get it back.
-
I was using skype the other day and noticed that there was a very noticeable red tint throughout the picture. anyone else have this problem?

ODD > HDD replacement went mostly smoothly for me. Just a few things to note are that:
1. Be careful with the delicate connectors!! Either get yourself antistatic equipment or remain in contact with some metal!
2. The service manual is NOT entirely accurate. I don't know why, but maybe it was a prototype Envy 14's manual or the Envy 17. Regardless, it wasn't a huge issue, it just showed the incorrect position and number of some screws, and the location of the keyboard light.
3. Make sure you remember what screws go where...I unfortunately messed up at one point and slightly dented the area to the left of my touchpad (that was the only issue with my installation though). If you know how I could possibly un-dent my Envy let me know

This is the "OBHD" that I got: Optical Bay HDD Caddy to replace Slot-Loading Optical,9.5,SATA [OBHD9-SATA-SATA-NF] - $42.00 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks -
Good, thanks for the update. I was looking to see if someone had done this yet. I'm thinking of getting a good deal on an Intel 40GB and using that as my boot drive and the existing Samsung as my data drive.
-
Yeah, I ran into similar problems but it worked out perfectly. It was also pretty hard to plug back in the touchpad connector.
$42 for a caddy... I think I will stick with the duck tape + adapter
-
any idea why the LED for my mute button is delayed by a second or two after i did a minimized recovery? the caps one is instant and i feel like the mute one was too before the recovery. i also deleted all remaining hp bloatware after the recovery including all mediasmart programs.
-
shut down, unplug, take out battery, hold down power button 30 seconds, plug everything back in, and try it.
I had a similar problem with my Wi-Fi, and thanks to 2.0 with that info, it fixed it for me. Kinda odd, but whatever, it worked. -
I would absolutely purchase this- BUT
I cant configure it to my needs in Canada...anybody know if this will shortly be available? -
Well how bout that, it fixed it
. Thanks! Repped.

What kind of SSD is used in the Envy 14 (160Gb and 256 Gb versions) in terms of brand and type? Does it have TRIM?
-
man the envy 14 screen sure is a lint magnet
-
I would like to know if there are any other pre-built models in the US beside the 1010nr? I know the envy 17 has the 1010 and 1011 where the 1011 is the more full featured pre-built.
-
has anyone installed a SSD drive in place with the regular HP drive? I did it and now it says "no bootable drive found" . I called HP and they said i can't replace a SSD drive for the HDD because they have different slots or something... I've replaced my MBP HD with a SSD before. Do HD and SSD take different sata slots or something in the envy?
-
Is there any way to get the Envy Windows theme back after a clean install? I rather liked that theme.
-
Windowblinds, Stardock, Rainmeter? Izzat what chu mean?
-
Whoever told you that was a big idiot. A SATA bus is a SATA bus, regardless of the internal workings of the drive. All three revisions of SATA are backwards compatible, so unless you are trying to use a SSD that is something other than a 2.5 inch SATA drive the connector is not the problem. Of course, you may not have it connected well.
There are several causes for this effect. The drive does not have an OS loaded and you did not insert a boot disk. The drive is not formatted correctly. (If it is the same drive you had in your mac you may need to reformat since the file systems are not the same.) You have the boot from internal drive disabled in the bios, your drive does not work, etc.
Tell us a little more about what you have going on and what you have done so we can help you out. -
They are listed in the first post of this thread.
-
Thanks for the info. I'm planning to go this route myself. Just curious if you've had a chance to check the read/write speeds yet and what SATA revision the expansion port is. I'm trying to determine if the ODD is connected to SATA1 or SATA2. I'm planning to build a cable to internally connect the drive to the eSATA port if the expansion port is SATA1. (Haven't received my E14 yet.)
-
I'm thinking about going a slightly different path. Since I'm a sucker for lightweight, do you guys think removing the DVD drive could shave off a little bit of weight? Would it be worth it?
-
Slot load ODDs are pretty light. It will save you a tiny bit of weight if you take it out, but I doubt you will notice it since the machine will still weigh over 5 lbs.
-
Heres my read/write benchmark (98% free):
http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/3338/hddbenchmark.png
How could I check to see whether it is sata 1 or 2?
According to SIW, it seems to be SATA2, but that's probably just info on the drive itself rather than the controller:

Hopefully you won't have to set things up the hard way
-
See first post in this thread.
Nice. I hate this. Walks away with $53 Million. Any other employee caught with the accusations walks away with boot print on their butt.
HP is wrong. Drive is probably blank. Insert your HP Recovery Disks, or Windows 7 DVD, and it will format and install Windows for you. Drives don't come with any OS on them. You may have to hit the ESC key repeatedly while the system boots up to bring up a menu that will let you select the boot device, then select your DVD drive, or just set up boot priority in the BIOS.
I'm certain it's SATA 2 or SATA 300. SATA 1 or SATA 150 is the older standard phased out a couple years ago. SATA 3 or SATA 600 is the new 600 MB/s standard. -
everything is working fine now with the minimum recovery! all i did was install a regular copy of windows ultimate (no real cd key though) then i redid the minimum recovery and it worked for some reason. My envy does not have the whine, the hp light is aligned, and the touchpad is also aligned. it came perfect! yay -
That answers it. Most WD SATA 300 drives require a jumper to run on a SATA 150 controller. I figured it was SATA 300, since the motherboard will have only one SATA revision. I just wasn't sure if the internal SATA expansion bay was an older budget SATA 1.5 controller interfaced via a PCIe bus. I've seen that before and its disappointing.
-
I wil be getting my envy on monday. I have a doubt. If i partition my hard disk, will i be able to recover only my C drive using recovery manager?
-
Strange. Usually drives are just limited to the bandwidth of the controller, are backwards compatible, and have one controller chip on the motherboard. But those benchmarks definitely look like it is capped.
-
Hey guys, so after following the threads since early July till now, and reading the many numerous reviews i've finally decided on the HP Pavilion dv6tse, it was close but it was the ports i tell you, lol and the chance i might get a lemon
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
have fun with your dv6t:se.
in other news Awww c'mon this time you locked up just while downloading stuff with jdownloader.
3rd time now. What the hell laptop. I also keep forgetting to look at the hdd to see if the hdd is having constant activity.
man I wish I knew what was causing this hard freeze crash thing. -
Backwards compatible, yes. Is it that simple, no. WD, for example equips most of their drives with autospeed detection that allows the drive to automatically adjust its bandwidth depending on the bandwidth detected. Not all SATA 150 controllers recognize said WD drives and a jumper must be manually placed to limit the drive's bandwidth to 150. Then the controller will recognize it.
I also noticed the 100MB/s limitation and thought it strange.
System info claims the transfer mode is via SATA 300, but system info is quite dumb most of the time. -
The benchmarks of the HDD in the ODD bay? They look fine to me? I mean, what you would expect of a conventional HDD?
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
would a bad cluster cause windows 7 to freeze for no apparent reason?
'cause my hdd had one (it was adjusted and the like after running chkdsk on boot) -
A little more variation between between larger and smaller file sizes. I'm used to seeing about 20MB/s difference between the 16k read file and the 2048k read. The bandwidth being similar across the board makes it seem like there is a limiting factor in play.
-
I actually restored the C drive using the image backup I created under Win7. Its not like a system restore thing.
It could be, but less likely I would say. I have SSD and not sure if SSD can have bad cluster/sector too since they are totally different in many aspect. I remember I was downloading the Free MP3 download offer from HP for six months. -
2.0, "on the cant update the BIOS" in first page, you did not mention how to extract the .exe files. BIOS F.06 is out and seems to be fixing the issue with the slice, however like everyone here that do clean install..it wont update it by running the .exe file. Anyone know what step by step instruction?
-
Would like to know if there is a fix to this as well. I'll run the WinFlash.exe to update the BIOS to F.06 and it'll start then shut my computer down.
-
Use a program like winrar.

SSDs are broken down into pages that contain blocks. Most newer SSDs have wear leveling and bad block management capability programmed in. Wear leveling attempts to spread erase and write actions across the available blocks so that they all reach their maximum erase cycles limit at relatively the same time.
It is not uncommon for blocks on an SSD to go bad. Bad block management reserves a small amount of space per block. For example, pages with 512KB blocks will usually have an additional 128 bytes per block reserved for the bad block manager to re-map to when blocks begin to malfunction. This usually occurs at start up. SSDs slowly shrink as the bad block space runs out. It won't be noticeable unless you are anal enough to notice losing 2MB of space over the course of two or three years. -
So.. the HDD caddy... is it a good choice? I mean... I'm not really interested in the performance aspect, that's what the SSD is for. But will a storage HDD run "fine" in the caddy off the ODD interface? I mean... I don't want to wait 15min for a picture to open off it.
And the installation go smoothly? What did it take? Any pics? can you tell there is an HDD in there rather than an ODD from an aesthetic standpoint? Thanks so much. -
I want the desktop wallpaper, the envy login screen, etc. I was hoping the Envy theme was available somewhere in the SwSetup folder or if I could somehow save it off of my 2nd envy 14.
-
Even if you extract and run the InsydeFlash.exe as an administrator, it still won't work if you have have a clean install. Based on the other thread (can't remember the person who stated this), it only works if you change the .ini settings to "ForceFlash".
I'm not too sure what ForceFlash means though. -
Wallpaper is found in windows/web/wallpapers. There's also a link on page 1 of an uploaded wallpaper and other Envy theme items.
Themes: C:\windows\resources\themes
Sounds: c:\windows\media -
I just have a quick question. How does HP track all the computers with warranty and stuff? Does each computer have like a serial number?
-
Yup, a serial number.
-
For the bad blocks thing, remember it's also very possible for the bad block to be caused by software. When that's the case, the HDD/SSD can't know it's bad, only the OS can.
Hard locks often are more of a RAM problem than a HDD problem, though. Magus, if you still get hard locks, try running memtest. -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
okay. could be HP gave me bad ram.
it's a bootable iso? -

I had this pop up just yesterday. I was a little concerned, so I chatted with hp online. I sent the screenshot to the hp chat person and after 20 minutes back and forth, I am getting a second powersupply. Personally, I don't think the powersupply was the problem, I just think the hp software was being dumb, as the powersupply easily charged my main battery and I didn't see any signs of throttling. Hey, free 2nd powersupply! -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
*runs the memtest iso, watches it auto-reboot around 45% done on test 7*
that is not encouraging. -
Thanks, I found the HP Envy wallpapers there but changing my account picture was more interesting. I wanted the "HP" account picture and only found it within some temp directory on my 2nd Envy. Anyways, then I noticed my login and logout screen backgrounds were still the Windows default blue ones. I tried following the instructions here but the login screen background didn't change. Any ideas?
