In a way, it is. It means it's not your processor, motherboard or GPU that's hosed. It's far, far easier to swap out some RAM than an entire mainboard ;)

Try running memtest a few more times and if it consistently reboots at a specific area, try to identify which RAM dimm is responsible. Remove it and retry the test. If it succeeds, then you have your culprit.

is anyone using the apple-like volume controls with the program 3rvx? I'm using it but it like lags. Press it like 3 times consecutively and it only does it once and it takes a few seconds for it to come back up again. With my macbook its very fast and doesnt lag.

Go into the 3RVX settings and change the hotkey controls for volume up and down to the volume up and volume down buttons. Should fix your problem.

I got it extracted using winrar as winzip wont do it. Here what it extract.

I captured what is being extracted (left) and what is being extracted by shaolinx for F05 BIOS. And here is what need to be done.

Instructions for future bios updates from shaolinx:
    Download .7z file above
Extract it to "C:\swsetup\SP49571" <-- no you cannot choose your own location
    Download new bios from HP
Run it but hit Cancel when it asks you if you want to update the bios
    Go to "C:\swsetup\SP#####\" <-- not C:\swsetup\SP49571
Extract Winflash.exe instead of running it
    Copy 01436.bin
    Go to "C:\swsetup\SP49571"
    Paste and overwrite 01436.bin
    Run InsydeFlash.exe as administrator

    What things pop up?

2.0, The instructions on page1 is insufficient and will not work for the bios. Please update to this.

    -Download .7z file(
http://sites.google.com/site/androidfilez/SP49493.7z). This has a modified Config file.
-Extract it to "C:\swsetup\SP49571" <-- no you cannot choose your own location
-Download new(or old) bios from HP
-Run it but hit Cancel when it asks you if you want to update the bios
-Go to "C:\swsetup\SP#####\" <-- the location of the 'new' bios, not C:\swsetup\SP49571
-Extract Winflash.exe instead of running it
    -Copy 01436.bin
    -Go to "C:\swsetup\SP49571"
    -Paste and overwrite 01436.bin
    -Run InsydeFlash.exe as administrator

Could someone comment on how the backlit keyboard is controlled ... ie. is there
a light sensor that turns the backlight on and varies the output of light and does the backlight turn off after a period of time..... thanks.

The F06 BIOS indeed create SP49571 folder on SWsetup instead of SP##### you mentioned. I supposed all new BIOS will be extracted to SP49571 folder.

UPDATE:I managed to update the BIOS to F06. But I encounter a problem where the bin file cant be found and wanted to add something to the instruction.

-Extract it to "C:\swsetup\SP49571" <-- no you cannot choose your own location
-Download new(or old) bios from HP
-Run it but hit Cancel when it asks you if you want to update the bios
-Go to "C:\swsetup\SP#####\" <-- the location of the 'new' bios, not C:\swsetup\SP49571 ----------> The new BIOS location might be the same location as SP49571
-Extract Winflash.exe instead of running it
    -Copy 01436.bin
    -Go to "C:\swsetup\SP49571"
    -Paste and overwrite 01436.bin
    -Run InsydeFlash.exe as administrator
-If Insyde Flash cant find the bin, click option and browse the bin file to SP49571 folder manually

so i saw something about minimized system recovery or something like that as a clean install. has anyone tried that? how well does it work as compared to a clean install and/or just uninstalling bloatware?

    I did install

"Essential System Updates for Microsoft Windows 7
    2010-04-30 , Version:5.00 A, 7.91M"

From HP website, it includes some hotfix specific to HP products. Tried that ans see after the patch if yours still freezing.

There is a toggle on the F5 key (by default its F5, but you can change the bios setting so you can use fn+F5)

It's a keyboard button that switches it on or off. No timers or sensors. EDIT: Ninja'd.

I used a Minimal Recovery and I absolutely recommend it. It's faster than both clean install and uninstalling bloatware (uninstalling is a long and tedious process, recovery is a one-click automated job) and it's a lot easier to use as it reinstalls all the drivers for you.

The only con I can see is that the MediaSmart stuff is installed in the recovery. I just uninstalled them in a few minutes and never saw any performance hit. Use Revo Uninstaller and CCleaner to properly remove the few MediaSmart applications.

I'm interested in this...how do you go about doing this? Do I use the system recovery discs I made? Also, I made the sys rec discs with my first Envy, which I RMA'd...will those work for the second envy that is coming in the mail, or do I need to make new ones?

I have heard too many issues from people who do clean installs, and I've never done one before, so I'm scared of that.

    eh...who the hell knows.

I'll figure it out eventually (or well I'll check and see if it's the hard-drive or something the next time it happens by seeing if the hdd light is blinking non stop or something. Push comes to shove I'll just do another clean install (but do a minimal install from the recovery disks so I don't have to mess around with drivers and the like)

Reboot and press Escape quickly. I think the option you want is F11 (Recovery), then there's an option for minimal recovery. Follow the on-screen prompts and you should be alright.

I didn't need to use any recovery DVD, only the partition on the drive. It doesn't remove it, either. I know someone else had issues and only managed to get it working with the DVDs, but I'd try the HDD method first.

man the LED for my mute button is sucking again. i think it was good when i first got the laptop. then i did a minimal recovery, removed remaining bloatware and the LED was delayed by 1-3 seconds every time i push it. i tried the fix suggested in here that was the shut down, take out the adapter, remove battery, hold power button for 30 secs, reconnect everything and turn it back on. well that seemed to fix it last night but now tonight im getting the delay again. while i had SC2 open the LED wouldnt even light up at all. so whats the deal? do i need to install that smart menu crap again?

EDIT: reinstalled hp's smartmenu that didnt do anything.

Alright, so I get back from vacation on monday and my exchange envy 14 is at my house there waiting for me.

How do I go about updating my video card drivers to 10.7? Is it a simple uninstall/install like other computers or is there something special due to the integrated graphics?

    something special.

and by special we mean "go make and eat a sandwich"

you don't uninstall the HP drivers. Doing so will break the switchable graphics.

you can't download the 10.7 drivers from ati's downloader. it won't let you like it won't let sony people. Instead you gotta get 'em from a direct link.

    https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/920...mobile/10-7_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc.exe

    there's 10.7

then when you install your screen will go blank. wait for like 5 minutes for the hard-drive light to stop blinking (for everything to be installed) then shut your computer down by hitting the power button.

if your power button is set to put it to sleep...whelp. hold it for like 10 seconds to do a hard shutdown

    - CPU's seem to vary. At one point they were only offering quad cores. Now only dual cores. Probably just exhausting their inventory.

How much of a difference in battery life is there after a clean install/minimized image recovery? Without having done either I'm lucky to make it past 3.5 hours.

From what I read for some people doing a clean install actually had adverse effects to the battery life by increasing the discharge rate of the battery.

If you go over to the battery life thread you can get an idea of how some peoples battery lives vary. That seems about right for people who haven't done clean installs. But I haven't read the whole thread so I would head on over there and check it out and ask the people on there. :)

All I installed was HP MediaSmart and that brought back the LED on/off functionality for the mute key albeit with the delay. I see a MediaSmart folder in the start menu but nothing in "programs and features" in the control panel.

There's a lot of misinformation regarding this. I don't think Quicklaunch has anything to do with the mute button because I don't have it installed and it still works. And to my surprise I noticed my mute LED is responding instantly now; I have no idea why.
