So i touched the msconfig settings before i saw the post that was in RED on the first page..idk how i missed that and want to know if the number of processors box is checked with 1 processor or not checked at all, i have an i5 520??

Warning: Do not touch MSCONFIG processor settings!

If you touch the #of processor settings in MSCONFIG/boot/advanced options you will get false # of Core/Thread readings in CPU-Z.
It will also lock your processor at one core and it will run at max speed.

Damn this sucks. This is my second envy and i thought i had a good one but now i realize that the only reason i didnt hear the whine was because i had that box checked for 1 processor when i uncheck it I can hear the whine

You should be fine if you havent messed with anything. If you run msconfig go to boot tab then advanced options and you should see a number of processors box unchecked. Leave it unchecked

hey guys i just reformatted my new E14, I expected the quick launch thing to be removed when i reformatted but it is still here. You know, that thing where you have the browser and skype available, then you have to press enter OS to get the computer going? I looked on the front page but didnt find anything, how do i get rid of it?

I have been having messages in the windows reliability monitor that indicate windows is not being properly shutdown. Does anybody else have this problem on their envy or know of any specific software that might cause this to happen? I installed some of the software that is recommended on the first page and wonder if this could be the trouble

BDF92, this is quick web. There is a quick web configuration tool in the start menu. From here you can disable/enable that feature to be on/off. Just type quick web in the search bar and it should find the configuration tool.

Can any of you guys check your reliability monitor and see if you are having the same not properly shutdown messages as me? The computer seems to shutdown properly, powers itself off and so on, but the messages leave me a little disconcerted. I don't want data loss.

My driver version was 8.something.something. They have a graphics driver available on the HP website, but I'm not sure if it is the most current. I haven't been brave enough to try updating to whatever version is current.

BDF92, I also believe there is an uninstall program in the HP quickweb folder if you just want it removed.

I get them when I PROPERLY shutdown windows. I have seen other people in other forums with the same problem, but no definitive answer. My reliability is in the toilet because of it =( On a side note, I LOVE THIS COMPUTER!

The temps on this thing are absolutely GREAT. I can ACTUALLY use this as a LAPtop. Played Borderlands last night for an hour and my temp's didn't go above 60C.

Anybody want to feel good about their purchase just google Macbook Pros overheating and laugh your a** off. It's hilarious how apple fans will jump through so many hoops for an obvious engineering flaw

I couldn't find any quick web :/ I think it's because I have no HP folders because of the reformat. And the reason I don't think it's from drivers is because it was there after the reformat which was weird. Right after I reformatted the computer and it was restarting (hadn't even installed the drivers yet) and the quick launch thing popped up.

Is it just me, or is the 14.5" size and the 1600x900 resolution a perfect combo? I always found the Macbook Pro's 13.3"/1280x800 resolution screen to be too tiny and narrow for my tastes. The Envy overall isn't too wide for my lap as my G50VT is and the font on most webpages is just right!

Yes, I love everything about my Envy 14 so far. Perfect size. I always opted for 15" notebooks because I wanted the faster GPU, but they always seemed just a little bit too big and heavy.

But for the the Envy 14, only two wishes:

    (1) Higher density battery for longer battery life

    (2) Faster GPU. I'm not talking a 550MHz clocked HD 5650 but an HD 5830 like in the Envy 15. Or even a nVidia GTS 260m.

I am thinking a higher density battery will become available, probably from third party, but not sure why HP released such a low capacity 8 cell. Who knows, maybe with a significant refresh they'll add a more powerful GPU. To be honest, I'd still like to see the option of an ODD with HD 5650 or without an ODD with an HD 5830. I understand people wanted an ODD, but not everyone.

How long does everyones envy take to go to sleep when shutting the lid?

Mine seems to take a really long time, like 5-7 seconds, which I know that isn't really long but relative to other computers it is. For example my brother just got a dm4 and it seems to fall asleep much faster like 2 seconds.

    Any thoughts or similar experiences?

Would each screen be made slightly differently so that the ICC for one Envy 14 wouldn't necessarily be the best for another? If this is incorrect then I second the request, lol. It would be nice to know my screen is calibrated.

It's very probable that each screen is different. The big thing, however, is by how much. If the screen is already calibrated roughly okay, then the profile would essentially shift your bad calibrations around, but if it's way out of whack, then it'd at least recenter you towards a proper calibration even if it isn't perfect.

That's the kind of data someone who's done the calibration could tell us about.

The original calibration is definitely "out of whack" for photo editing - it has a bluish tone and dark gamma for blues generally. You can test your current calibration here: black point ( http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/black.php), white saturation ( http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/white.php), and color gamma ( http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/gamma_calibration.php), among other things. My current ATI settings that match best with these tests are: 22 brightness and 86 contrast for all channels, 85 gamma for red and green channels, and 75 gamma for blue. I'm still not happy with it though - the blues tend to be underexposed and I don't know how to fix it without affecting the other settings.

I think maybe the actual Quick Web OS may be installed on here for good as it seems to have survived a reformatting. Do you have the SWsetup folder? If so you may try installing HPQWEENY (not sure if this is exactly the name of the folder but it's something like that) so that you have the interface to disable the quick web boot up thing. Or maybe go into BIOS to disable it, there is a setting under boot options to disable it also. Now that I think of it I had to install it after doing a minimal system recovery. I have some theories on my question I asked earlier about Windows not shutting down properly that I am gonna test out tonight.

I was wondering if any of you guys have the 720p display? (Not the "Radiance" one)

It's 200$ more to get the Radiance display, but i don't care about the resolution since I chose this laptop mainly for its gaming capabilities... Is the other screen as good for contrast and color? That's way more important to me.

Also, has anyone tried to change the thermal paste for the CPU and the GPU for some after market stuff? Are they even accessible? This could give me a bit more OC headroom for the GPU.

I've heard the Envy 14 has some bios issues that are killing battery life / causing other problems right now?

I also heard the released a new bios for it that supposedly fixed up some problems?
can anyone comment on this? thanks!

I haven't heard of anything of the sort. The sole issue related to the battery is the slice battery incorrectly reporting its charge and/or disconnecting randomly. This should be fixed by the recent BIOS update that was released a few days ago.

yeah, i'm also having the -black screen on wake- issue, but it's not too hard to close the screen and open it again. I thought it had to do with plugging it into my external monitor.

on a different note, anyone know if apple mini display port to vga adapters work? I know the one to dvi does tho from a user video.

also, I just realized there's something slightly wrong with my envy...
the lid of the laptop is positioned about 1mm too far to the right... =(
It shows when you close the lid comparing the sides, and also slightly on the alignment of the hinges... oh well. I just can't let it bother me. I wonder if anyone else's is like this. Haha, us ENVY owners are so damn picky!

So that fits 9.5mm HDDs? Not 12.5mm, right? No way to cram a 12.5mm drive into that space?

Also, how did you dent it during the installation? Just so I can be more careful if I end up doing it.

    I don't think 12.5mm will fit.

I tried using too long of a screw underneath the battery. I fixed it after trying to screw it in once, but it still left a visible bump to the left of the trackpad. If anyone knows how I could fix this, let me know.

It's very slightly lifted, and I can barely feel a bump even why trying to find it, but it's visually noticeable depending on lighting. Kinda annoying :(. I still love my envy in just about every other way, except graphics overclocking performance (especially love the most recent trackpad update and the people willing to improve and share the software)

    Just got my envy !

First impression is it's a lot bigger than I expected!

There are no imperfections that I can see. Touchpad is completely flush, and there is minimal keyboard flex. I am a happy camper!

Ah, I do have a bit of CPU whine though :/

Hey fellas. I ordered my E14 a few days ago with the i7-720QM and after reading through this thread along with the older one I notice that a lot of you do not have the i7. Now is this due to the price jump from the i5 to the i7, or is this more related with the heat/battery issues?
