Nope. I just got my envy, but I have whine. The whine is barely noticeable. In fact, I wouldn't have noticed it if I didn't read this forum.

I got my first e14 replaced because of a number of problems, most notably a really loud whine. This replacement I'm on now has it, but it's much MUCH quieter, and it's not always there. I don't know what they did, or if it was just a bad batch of CPU's, but I've definitely noticed a difference!

SSD quality 256 vs 160? I'm debating between the two, but I seem to recall reading somewhere that the 256 is somewhat inferior.

Wow, I didn't realize how reflective this screen is from two feet away (i.e. on my desk instead of my lap). Geez. It's still pretty awesome, but I wish they tuned the reflectivity down a little...

Notebooks based on Huron River (Sandy Bridge notebook platform) will not be available untill Q1 of next year. We will see the first notebooks based on Huron River at CES (January 6-9 2011). Hopefully HP will show us new Envy notebooks based on this platform there, just like they updated the Envy 13 and 15 at CES last year.

Got my envy 14 for 2 weeks now. No whine or visible exterior defect. Really great notebook i have to say. I deleted the hp_tools partition, Did a clean install and everything seems great! My bios is vf5 but im not upgrading since i am not having any problems right now. Dont know any benifit with updating the bios to the newest.

My question is about the beats audio. Is their any indicator that beats audio is on? I do fn+b but no visible indicator if its on or off at all.

my envy has a slight wine for like a couple secs every once in a while. it's nothing. i got mine on the 26th btw.

it might be the hard drive working. idk, i can't tell.

this thing IS a lint magnet, though. makes me ignore my ocd.

Hi guys.. i have a problem with my envy. Two days back, i updated the BIOS from F05A to F12A. Update went fine. But after that whenever i copy a file to pen drive, it copies around 5-8 mb/s. Before update, it usually copies more than 20 mb/s. Do you guys also face this issue in the new bios? any body have any idea on how to fix it. I dont want to move to F05A BIOS before knowing the reason.

has anyone purchased a 3m privacy filter for the 14? I'm thinking of getting one and it'd be nice to know what other people's experience is.

The good news is because the envy's screen is flush with the bevel (whatever the black border is) the filter size isn't all that important (especially because 14.5 is a super non-standard screen size...)

Now that you mention it those 3M Privacy Gold Filters look pretty sick. I think you could use a 15.4 inch one.. Maybe. I dont have a rule where I am but I think it would work.

Successfully OCed my I5 450 with setFSB! :D

Use SLG505YC56DT. My I5 only goes up to 140.00. Any higher than that and it hard freezes.

Confirmed with CPUz and 3Dmark about the new clock speed.

2.5GHz with Turbo Boost @ 2.775 GHz. The temps only increased about 4 degrees.

My chip might not be able to OC too high, but others may be able to get even higher. Enjoy the extra free performance :D

Thanks to Bronsky in the 3820TG forum

How high are you trying to set it?

For mine, I started off trying to set it at 150 and it instantly crashed so I thought it wouldnt work at all. Then for the hell of it i tried at 140 and it worked. Its not much of an OC, but any little thing helps.

Just ordered my envy 14 this morning, got overnight shipping so i will have it tomorrow

    ENVY 14-1010NR 14.5" Notebook Computer
2.4GHz Intel Core i5-450M 6GB (1x4GB, 1x2GB) RAM 500GB 7200rpm SATA Hard Drive SuperMulti DVD Burner ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 1GB Graphics 14.5" LED Backlit Widescreen Display

I did have the envy 17-1011nr,but it was getting so hot that the keyboard was warping and bowing upward from the heat,it actually looked like a pregnant keyboard :) never seen a laptop do that before,i had originally wanted the 14 then i saw what a good deal that newegg had for the 17 with the core i7,8gb ram and the ati 5850 so i bought it instead, but after the troubles with it i got rid of it and back to what i wanted in the first place,i can't wait till tomorrow :D

When I'm doing a lot of typing, especially the faster I type, many of my key presses are not taking effect. It seems that I'm missing about one character for every 10 to 20 characters I type.

I've finally figured out what's happening: When my finger presses on any key, unless I press in the very center of the key or use more force than I'm accustomed to, the key moves down and feels like it's been pressed, but no character appears. For example, if my finger presses the key close to an edge or a corner, the key moves down as I would expect giving me the normal tactile feeling of a depressed key, but it doesn't always move down enough to register.

It seems that the only way round this is to type very slowly, making sure I hit the exact center of the key each time, or bash on the keys harder than I would consider normal. With every other keyboard I've used in the past, if the key moves down, the character appears.

Is anyone else having this problem?

SOLUTION FOUND FOR SLOW SSD SPEEDS!

NOTE: THIS WORKS ON THE ENVY 15 AND SEVERAL OTHER PM55 AND HM55 CHIPSET NOTBOOKS AND HAS BEEN CONFIRMED ON INTEL, SAMSUNG AND VORTEX DRIVES. SHOULD WORK FINE ON THE ENVY 14 AFAIK. I AM COPYING THE FOLLOWING FROM MY ENVY 15 OWNERS LOUNGE POST....

This is a solution to fix the slow 4K R/W speeds of the intel and other SSD's in the Envy series. It actually appears to affect all CPU's using the PM55 or HM55 chipset. The negative impact of this 'fix' is that it will cuase your CPU to idle at full speed under no load in order to override the 'C1E' power savings state which is the culprit that bottlenecks the SSD speeds.

Here are my 'normal speeds' vs. improved speeds with this tweak:

    View attachment 55236 original speeds

View attachment 55237 speeds after disabling idle state

The good news is you can easily set single (or more) power plan settings to use when you want (or need) maximum SSD performance and switch back to normal by changing power plans. Bad news is while in this mode your temps will be high even at idle. My 540M idles at 65C when in this mode but still just gets lukewarm to the touch after an hour, those of you with i7's may have much higher temps.

CAUTION! This is a registry edit tweak and should be done with extreme care. Back up your registry so you can reverse it if you make an error etc. Not responsible for errors on your part.... (Just covering my a**).

    1. Go to "regedit"

    2 .Locate: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Power \ PowerSettings \ 54533251-82be-4824-96c1-47b60b740d00 \ 5d76a2ca-e8c0-402f-a133-2158492d58ad

    3. Change Attributes from 1 to 0.

    4. Then go to any Advanced Power Plan settings, select Processor Power Management, There will be a new option 'processor idle disable'. This will show in all 6 default power plan settings (3 for plugged in and 3 for on battery)

    5. Change this to 'disable idle' on the plans you want to have full SSD performance

NOTE: Doing this will cause the CPU to idle at full speed at 0% load. It also works on the battery settings but will kill your battery life, my 540M idles at ~19W in this state vs. 5.5W in normal mode....

Some people are attempting to see if this can be adjusted to just disable idle on 1 core or ideally on just 1 thread which would reduce heat and power draw significantly, probably be a full time fix while plugged in. Will update here if any improvements are found.

PS: I really do see a big improvement, for example, in my Nikon photo viewing app. I can now scroll through a 500+ 20MB image folder at full screen full resolution without any pauses or skipping (grey out) of any images. Never been able to do this before, the whole folder takes like 65 seconds to scroll through.....

Well, right after I received the Envy 14 I did the old keyboard response test where you open notepad or some place to type, then hold down both shift keys and hit all the characters. Response was pretty sad--thinking it missed about half the characters. The Envy is my first laptop so have nothing to compare but the keyboard response is way worse than any of the desktop keyboards I use. Would be curious if some of you with other laptops could try this and see what kind of response you are getting--are laptop keyboards just notoriously cheap and bad or is it just the one on the Envy?

Can this same thing be done by using RealTemp and disabling C1E there rather than using a change in the registry? I often disable C1E with RealTemp on my desktop and messed with it on the Envy and it seemed to work--or is there something else going on with the registry changes that I am not aware of? Haven't bothered to download AS SSD Benchmark to the Envy so not aware of my read/write speeds with the Intel SSD just now--they seem to be pretty fast but will try disabling C1E in RealTemp and check. Can also disable Turboboost there, too. Not much on changing the registry unless I have to.

keep in mind that the processor'll be running at max all the time (so it'll get warm)

Hi guys, has anyone been able to use the recovery discs they created with a different HDD/SSD other than the one that came with the system?

I created my recovery discs with the 500GB Scorpio Black that came with the Envy 14 and can't recover it to a spare smaller 160gb HDD I have lying around. It gives me some error that the disc is not compatible with my system.

I assume it's because it's not the same capacity so it can't recover through the disc image? If that's the case, then can I recover through installing my own Ultimate OEM disc then using the HP Recovery software?

Are you on BIOS f.12? My recovery discs stopped working when I updated to BIOS f.12, I have the same HDD and it says the discs are not supported on this computer.

Edit: LOL Magus beat me to the punch.

Does it work fine if you update the BIOS BEFORE you make the recovery USB stick?

    ...

    you know.

I don't know. It might, but the bios update might somehow change the envy's identifier in the bios or something (which the recovery discs check) meaning it won't matter.

'course changing back to f.06 might make it work again.

Guys I left my E14 on idle (plugged in) on Intel graphics and I noticed that I got artifacts all over my desktop. I right clicked, refreshed, and back to normal. What's going on??? Please don't tell me I have a bad unit. Please tell me it's just a minor fluke.
