Im scared of buying the Radiance screen and then in a month or 2 they will drop the price :(

*PS - Has anyone paid the $300 Radiance upgrade?
Seems like everyone bought it when it was $100 or $200

    Do you regret your purchase?
If you could go back would you rather get the bright view display and save the $300?

The price just seems too steep and way outrageous, I've never seen this much $ upgrade for better screen.

I bought my Envy when the radiance display was the only option and it's nice, I really like the 1600x900 resolution. I'm not exactly sure if it would be worth the $300 though. Until I somehow have a brightview Envy to compare it to, I can't say much other than it looks A LOT better than my 3.5 year old Sony VAIO's screen, lol.

Yeah $300 is way too steep. Apple offers their hi-res screen for $100.

I'm not exactly sure I know what you mean? It was the Toshiba that gave me problems, the HP hasn't given me problems yet, and hopefully it won't. Can you elaborate?

So I'm not the only one that thinks this computer is better than a Macbook Pro. I returned the 13 inch to the Apple store after 3 days. This computer is a much better alternative.

    Hey guys,
Im trying to install Reils touchpad program, but i have a missing dll or something. I went to the trackpad discussion and someone posted a link to the missing dll, but I cannot seem to do anything with it. when i double click i get a warning that i am trying to modify a dll file blah blah blah. The poster had said to click start with windows and youre good to go... i am a total noob...what do i need to do step by step...please?

    TIA

You don't open a .dll, you simply place it where it needs to be so that whatever needs it will use it.

    thanks again :)

edit - i downloaded .net and installed reils software thx!

    i don't want to do 4+ quotes...so here goes

thanks for the clarification on the colors, JJB. i must've remembered incorrectly
    thanks russel for the info
and thanks friendly fire for stating that gimp is better (i have it on my desktop)

i probably won't install either of them, but when the time comes, i'll choose.

it's like that. i had to hard reboot, and so did magusdraco if i recall correctly. it works fine afterward and the version is updated
what i'm wondering is: how can we get hydravision on the ati software? for my 4770 on my desktop, there is this mutlidesktop part of the ati catalyst drivers that let's me have multiple saved desktops on one monitor. to switch, you'd scroll up/down on the desktop wallpaper. anyone know how to get this into my laptop? i miss having multiple displays.

and yes, zman, i believe this beaut' is better than the mbp 13 too =]

is reil's that much better than the googlecode? i'm very snug with my settings right now....with the synaptics drivers, my top tap zones are turn off touchpad and refresh, and on the bottom, back in a browser and minimize. the two finger scrolling works well, and the 1+1 right click works well most of the time.

should i try out reils anyway?

I'm wondering if I should try the googlecode or reils. I have no problem with my default touchpad settings.. but that's probably cause I use my mouse most of the time. Do these make a big improvement?

Also, does anyone know how to disable the CD drive so it doesn't make that noise when I turn on my Envy?

Don't be so quick to register. Wait until after your 21 days because after you register for that, you might not be able to return your Envy if anything is defective or if there are any issues that come up.

I have reil's installed now and had a question...

is there any control panel for his, or is it all behind the scenes? Can i make adjustments? Do I still use the synaptics control panel? I left the synaptics one finger scrolling and tap zones turned on...is that kosher?

Also, how come a single left click seems to always register as as double left click (not using the button put just tapping the touchpad once)

I have had my envy 14 for 2 days,i have the envy 14-1010nr model,I love it,but it is driving me nuts, yesterday evening,I had to factory restore because it said a corrupted file from a download software package was causing errors ,one of those errors was no Internet
,it would connect to my router but no Internet access, the only thing I could do was factory restore, then today,it installed those first set of windows updates and restarted and started to do a disk check but coudn't said there was a corrupted file from a software package, and another thing is everytime I plug my iPhone 4 into it it can't install the driver,it says driver installation failed then USB device not recognized,so I restart and it tells me must restore to an earlier time because of corrupted file because of recent software install,so I try to install prior to windows updates but it won't let me saying a disk check must be done first,so I finally got it to do a disk check and it restarted normally no more messages,I restarted twice more and it started fine,so I am not sure what is going on,is it something in the windows updates or something else? I don't want to keep restoring it over and over.

In a dilemma guys. I'm currently on my third Envy14 that I sent back for repair cause the touchpad was making a clickety clackety sound. Other than that it was pretty much perfect except for a slight whine which came and went but didn't get to check cause when I heard the clickety clackety I called tech support.

But then again, I did pay a premium price for a "premium" laptop and expected it to be nearly flawless. HP's QC is sliding down a steep hill for me and I'm starting to question if purchasing the laptop was a good decision or not. At the time, 30% off was the the primary reason why I bought it, but with the time spent having it built, shipped, shipped back and repeat 2x possibly 3x, that 30% doesn't seem to be worth it any more.

Any advice guys? I'm pretty much at the end of road waiting for HP to deliver on a quality laptop...

Try running the diagnostic utility, press esc at startup and select f11 and check your HDD (if you have an HDD) It could be a corrupted drive that is causing the errors. It will run a disk check, and if it comes up with any errors, you have a bad drive. This is not Windows disk check, it is an HP disk check.

Edit: I meant f2 for system diagnostics, sorry...

I feel your pain. I returned two of these as well, until I finally received an acceptable one (which is by no means perfect). The first went back for crazy crazy keyboard flex and whine, second went back for the same clickety clackety noise you got on the touch pad.

My third envy, and the one I am keeping has a very very faint clickety noise, but luckily only on the right side of touchpad, which i dont use so much. Also, the keyboard backlighting is uneven (Y, T, U H, J, 6 and 7 are all much more faint with light than the rest of keyboard)

That being said, with BCB I paid just over $700 for this thing, and while it was a hassle to send two back (they credited me and addtl $50 for my trouble there) there is nothing else on the market that can compare.

I understand your frustration thought, but I would hold out a little longer.

Hopefully it comes up good, but some users have recieved units with defective HDD's, so it shouldn't hurt to check. I wasn't recieving any errors, but I ran the hardware tests just to be sure nothing was defective. It could be a bad recovery image, if the errors persist, you might try and get HP to ship you a free set of recovery DVDs.(it shouldn't be hard to convince them to ship them free, though I could be wrong) Another place you could check for info about disk errors is the Event Viewer in Windows, it will usually report read/write errors, or bad blocks.

hey.. does anyone in here know about the official launch of HP Envy in New Delhi, India?
i've been wanting to buy the Envy 14..
also does anyone seem to have any idea of the approximate price in India?
i've checked a few websites and they don't seem to know.. they just keep pointing out that it's for $999 in the US.. the specification that i'm looking for is:
i3 (maybe even i5 if its not too expensive)
    4GB ram
    320 GB HDD
    ATI 5650
and the rest i suppose to be standard..

    thanks in advance

Ever since i installed reils touchpad program, I have had some issues - I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, can anyone help?

Tapping the touch pad always induces a DOUBLE left click. Holding finger on clicker and trying to move cursor always does pinch and zoom now....

Do i still use the synaptics software even with reils installed...im confused. SHould i disable certain things in the synaptics software, so they do not interfere with reils???

If it is frozen, you should be able to hard power down (though hard powering down can mess something up, when it's stuck you really have no choice), it sounds like something is faulty, which test is it doing this on?

I am a bit confused too, it does this to me, I have touch zones enabled, and when I touch to quote or something in the forum, it opens up a 2nd browser window, don't know what's wrong.
The pinch zoom seems buggy, even with default synaptics driver, if I touch the grey lines with pinch zoom enabled, instead of 2 finger scrolling I get pinch zoom, but it is only when I touch the grey line that it does this.

i had that too. its cause you have single click enabled for both reil's and synaptic. what i did was disabled left click on REIL's software. Enabled 2 finger right click on REIL's software. Enabled 3 finger swipe down for win-tab. Enabled 3 finger swap right/left to go back/forward on SYNAPTIC software.

Try a memory test too, to rule that out, something has got to be wrong with a piece of hardware. If it is freezing on the diagnostic, it's not a Windows only problem...

well it makes it louder, that's for sure.

though in some cases you need to lower one of the settings to make it not buzz (don't remember which one it was..shoulda bookmarked that post..it was a week ago in one of the threads)

edit: It buzzed for me over my logitech speakers but not when just playing out of the envy's speakers.

it buzzed for me on headphones through the logitech speakers..didn't check headphones just in the envy.

You think it'd be better to use the tweak? I really don't want to be changing any settings whenever I listen to different songs either through the Envy's speakers or through my pair of headphones.

I did it. Volume increased but I don't like the distortion so I just began to bring the levels down in the Beats control panel. I was able to still get a volume boost before any distortion. Try it. You can A/B it with the default flat levels.

Hey guys, starting to have some newer, more frustrating problems. It all started a couple of days ago my microphone went from being perfectly fine, to not working at all. My sound then stopped working, so I disabled the microphone (seemed to be overriding the sound) and then the sound worked again, but the microphone would not. When I boot up a message appears that something is wrong with my c drive and that I should allow a scan to fix the problem, which I do, but to no avail. I get a message that says the scan could not complete and then it boots up.

Well this was all that was the case until last night, when I went to boot up, the computer got stuck as windows was booting, so I tried again, same thing. I am writing this from the HP Quick Web, or whatever it is called. Any opinions would be great, and I would love to return this computer (I am within my 21 days), but I am in another country without the original receipt

I wish we got more than 1 custom option so we could have settings tailored to specific speakers and sound systems instead of playing with the EQ every time. 1 custom setting is kinda weak, and different speakers hit different sounds better/worse than others. Here are my audio settings that sound pretty good on the built in speakers, I left 24 bit 96000 hz from the audio tweak, I have bass at -4 and treble at 0, in Beats I have +5, +3, +7, +7, 0, 0, +5, +5, +5, +7 all enhancements disabled (I also like rock)

Edit: It seems the speakers heard us talking about audio, now intermittently, I get a buzzing during songs. It has once made the computer freeze up for about 30 seconds and it eventually worked itself out. Anybody got any ideas on why it would do this or had this happen to them? This is my first audio problem on the computer.
