Should I update my graphics drivers and BIOS to the current ones on HP's website for the Envy 14? Any known problems with these updates?

f.12 is kinda iffy and also breaks the recovery discs verification thing (doesn't think your computer goes with 'em)

When I was calling tech support the guy made me update my BIOS to f.12, but I still haven't been able to make recovery disks (don't really need 'em since I've got a legit Windows 7 Pro key anyway), but I'm thinking that it only breaks the verification if you made the disks before updating the BIOS. Otherwise HP is even more incompetent than I thought.

f.12 breaks more than recovery discs, I have posted in the new owner's in paradise to not update, its a bad beta BIOS. It is faulty on the hardware level. I recieved some awful electronic noise when listening to music and there was an entry in event viewer about the BIOS incorrectly communicating to the embedded controller and that causing the computer to function incorrectly. Stay away from f.12...

Using the newest version of SetFSB Freeware with the SLG505YC56DT clockgen.
You have to go up in small increments though.

I moved the top bar up to 90/760 (83 originally) which OCs it to about 2.775 Turbo boot.

Then i moved the bottom bar by 1 increment and ran Wprime after each move to see if it was stable. Eventually got to 100/190 which resulted in a 2.75 normal with a turbo boost to 3.05GHz.

Thanks to bronsky in the Acer Forum for advice.

If I had BIOS F.02 do I have to update to F.04, F.05, F.06 and then to F.12 to get all the fixes or does the F.12 one contain the fixes from the previous versions?

    Thanks!

Unfortunately it does not work on my Envy 15. It just freezes the screen when I try to set the FSB, and a hard power down is required to recover. I have the i5 540M with the "Chipset; Intel Ibex Peak-M PM55, Intel Ironlake-M" (or Arrandale-3M). The read me mentions needing that info and MOBO name etc. but I do not see anywhere to input that info, or it could just be the info they need to develop a specific clock generator?

It does read my current FSB info with no problems...

    Any ideas?

Thanks for these, which file do you recommend using? This is for the Radiance screen, right? I don't really know much about calibration but it feels like the colors are off on the Envy 14, maybe a little oversaturated or something like that.

This is the first time it has happened to me, but has anyone had any problems with random disconnecting with the ethernet? I was doing some graphics intensive work last night and the fan was blowing out hot air and the computer was getting hot and my ethernet shut down for no reason. The light was off, but the wireless still worked so I had to revert to using my much slower wireless connection until i restarted and replugged the ethernet.

Its all trial and error. How high did you try setting it? When I first did it, i tried going one by one on the top bar and it just froze. Then just for the hell of it i tried 90/760, and it worked

Also, try SLG505YC264BT as the clockgen. Maybe youll have some success with that one

Hmmm I have one single dead pixel in the center of the screen.. Its hard to see, took a while for me to discern it wasn't just dust... Do you guys think i'd have better luck w/ an RMA. I kinda wonder if its worth it. Doesn't look like much except on a white background. Any others out there who experienced dead pixels? What do all of you guys think?

Does this ever happen to anyone? These lines come up after I come out of sleep mode and they go away if I open a window such as My Computer. It also happens when I'm on Power Saving Mode and the screen goes black to save battery and then I touch the pad to turn it back on. At the moment I am using Intel graphics but I am not sure if it happens on the ATI Graphics as well.

Does anyone have issues with their brightness keys after coming out of sleep mode? Mine simply don't work after coming out of sleep (sometimes...not every time) and I have to reboot the system to get them to work again. The other function keys work, even fn+esc for the system info.

Is there any way to get them to work again when they go dead?

i noticed one other person saying something about this...when I opened the box for the first time and plugged in the machine as directed I got a blinking white led for the battery, and it never stopped. I assumed that maybe it had charged - since the only instructions said to wait for a white light - nothing about blinking. when I tried to turn it on I got absolutely nothing

I plugged in a second time and got a solid white light and immediately hit the power button, but then the light went to amber. I quickly hit the power to turn it off - I am really afraid to do damage to the battery's capacity.

What is going on? Should I return the machine?

This happens to me as well. This isn't a hardware issue, it's an issue with the drivers. I found a way to reproduce this problem. This is on a clean installed Windows 7, with stock 10.3 drivers from HP. First, switch to Intel graphics and change power settings to "high performance". Now, to get the artifacts, you have to leave it idle until screen turns off, or you can simply reboot the computer. To fix that problem, just right click on desktop and hit "refresh" or reboot your computer (after changing power settings).

Never had a blinking white light but the white on initial plugin then changing to amber (5 - 10 sec later) is normal. Amber means it's charging and it turns white when fully charged. The initial white is just until it senses the battery needs to be charged. I think your OK to just plug in and use it. Just hover your cursor over the battery icon (or click it) and it will show the charge percentage.

    yeah what this guy said.

however as an aside it doesn't happen if you use the balanced and/or hp recommended power scheme. So...*shrugs* I dunno why high performance causes it.

I had this issue when I just got the Envy also.
I left it on all night with the blinking white LED and it was still the same in the morning. I finally just decided to turn on the machine and that's when it started to charge. Oh well, there's nothing I could do about it at that point. Haven't really tested the battery life yet to know whether or not it took a hit, but we'll see.

Not too sure, but my Gigabyte motherboard manual warns against flashing up too many versions. It says to do it in increments of 2, ie. f.02-f.05, f.05-f.12. I would also suggest not going to f.12, it has many problems, I tried it for a while but got some issues and have downgraded back to f.06.

When I'm on battery, shouldn't it tell me how much longer I can be using the battery for when I hover or click the battery icon in the taskbar? It shows me on my Dell which has Windows 7 Pro like my envy, so why doesn't it?

I havent found any issues after updating to F12. Could you explain more, how to check the F12 BIOS defects. So far the system actually running better with F12....but could be because I havent done things you've done to test it.

When listening to music, I got a weird electronic sound from the speakers, froze the screen for nearly 30 seconds several times, then once the freeze was over, I went into Event Viewer to see if anything was logged. I had an ACPI error that said something to the effect of the BIOS was incorrectly communicating with the Embedded Controller and that it could cause the computer to function incorrectly. I also filtered for ACPI specific entries and the BIOS was the cause of a CD I had tried to rip not ripping. Not to mention you lose the ability to use the recovery discs you created. It took some time for the audio error to happen. I had been on the BIOS version for a couple of weeks before this had happened. Until I see otherwise, I blame BIOS f.12

I have googled about this and cannot say for certain. Some have said it is because HP skimps on batteries, that the battery dosen't have the circuitry to do this. This is speculation, but most users have installed battery bar as a runtime estimator. I have tried to find information on maybe a registry entry or something to get it to show up but have had no luck... I would rather have Windows estimate the battery runtime myself.

The vertical lines are artifacting, and pretty bad one at that. Thing is... It should only happen during overclocks.

The only thing I could see would be the clocks fudging up for say half a second, raising past the safe limit and causing artifacting on the desktop before going back to normal. Maybe the clock's trying to go to 550Mhz? :p

    Hi

Please forgive me if my post is in the wrong thread

Have ordered a dv6 with the following specs:

    Intel® Core™ i7-720QM Processor (1.60GHz, Turbo) 1333MHz/6MB L3 Cache
    15.6" Diagonal High-Definition LED HP Brightview Widescreen Display (1366 x 768)
    640GB-7200 RPM
    4gb 1333Mhz RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5650 graphics

I am in a dilemma as to cancel this order and go for Envy 14 quad core. is the display on the dv6 very bad compared to radiance?

any of your comparisions are greatly welcome

    thanks geeks.

I get around 4 and a half hours on f.06 or f.12 (I think I get better on f.06), a couple of posters in the battery life log had mentioned talking to HP reps on the phone and the reps saying that the BIOS people at HP were working on a BIOS that was supposed to improve battery life. They also said this was a BIOS that would be newer than the f.12 but this is speculation. I have been visiting their driver page pretty regularly now waiting on the update.

Its actually both calibrated with x-rite display pro 2 but with different software. One of them is using x-rite own software the other is using coloreyes.
