Not sure on that. Would be nice to know but since I'm installing a 2nd hdd in there it won't matter to me anyway.

Eh, it shouldn't work unless there's an adapter somewhere in the cable, because DP is digital and VGA is analog. But considering that reviewers are saying it worked then maybe it does work...
-
Hm...strange, I haven't experiencing any of the things you mentioned but I will take a more closer look at those stuff and report back if I experienced any strange electronic sound/freezing.
Ah ic, the one from X-Rite own software definitely looks better. After applying with the profile you created, grey color does look grey, not that bluish as before. Thanks kingcow!
PS:If anyone wondering how to apply the ICC profile...its pretty simple, windows have color management feature.
Just follow this 8 step and you are set!
1. Download the profile to your desktop or other easily traceable location
2. Navigate to the ICC profile on your hard drive, right click on it and choose "Install profile"
3. To verify that it installed to correct place, look in "C:Windows/System32/spool/drivers/colors. The profile should be in that folder. If it's not there you can copy and paste it into the correct folder manually.
4. Open control panel and choose "Large Icons" in the "View by" drop down menu on the top right (if you don't already have it set like this)
5. Click on Color Management and uncheck the box that says "Use my settings for this device" then click the "Advanced" tab at the top of the Window
6. Click "Change System Defaults" at the bottom left and in the new window, click "Add" near the bottom left.
7. This should bring up a list of profiles among which should be the one you downloaded. Highlight this profile and click OK at the bottom right. Then with your new profile highlighted in the box click "Set as default profile" toward the bottom right.
8. Toward the top of the window click on the "Advanced" tab, then check the box "Use Windows Calibration" toward the bottom left. As soon as you check this box you should see your screen change to the new profile (a bit darker, crisper, less blue) and this profile should remain in effect until/unless you change it. -
it looks like there's a box that would house the adapter on the VGA side...hmm...

This may be a stupid question, but is it bad to constantly switch back and forth between powersaving graphics and high performance? I'm quite new with this graphics switching. Thanks for the replies in advance!
-
It should be fine to constantly switch back and forth.
-
I've been staying on intel graphics and will use the ATI/AMD graphics when I really need it. The temperatures are better running on intel and I believe there's no sense putting extra mileage on the dedicated ATI/AMD when it's not neccessary.

Thanks for the detailed steps. Helps out a bunch! + rep

Thinking of doing a clean install right now but I have not created Recovery Disks as I dont have empty DVDs right now....Can I create them later on?
Please let me know.
Thanks. -
You won't be able to create them on a clean install. But you MIGHT be able to restore if you leave the recovery partition. Notice I said might. You could also try minimized system recovery, lot less headaches getting hardware working, removes some of the bloatware, it is a reasonable compromise in regards to clean install. Also don't forget to back up SwSetup folder. It has all your software and drivers.

damnit. i have the cpu whine when i plug my usb g5 mouse into my comp. -___-.

Excellent, thanks for writing that, I was a bit dumbstruck when I saw it. Now I just need to find a profile for the Brightview screen!

is anyone else struggling to get their windows theme looking alright? I'm coming from XP and I wanted to keep that look and feel but none of the instructions i've found online seem applicable - clicking on a classic theme under personalization barely puts a dent in the ugly 7 gloss -I simply want my neutral grey menu surrounds. Could HP be messing with the personlization?
any advice?
--------------------
i had something similar happening, and once i removed Microsoft Security Essentials and installed F-Secure Client Security, i had the Envy Stardock settings exactly as they should be, i.e. silver and grey theme. Microsoft Security Essentials was messing with the settings somehow, also it Would slow down windows Explorer, and once it was removed, explorer worked normally. -
It can be found Here

my use windows calibration checkbox is grayed out.
..edit: ok now it's working somehow.
my eyes thought they were playing tricks on me with how things looked different -
what do people think of colour profile? I'm starting to like it, but I'm unsure if i prefered the max brightness...
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
yeah the profile seemed a little weird after getting used to the original colors.
I don't really know how to undo it so I'll leave it alone for now and see if I get used to it. -
the color profile made the blue on chrome's bookmark bar look really gray, didnt like it and now i don't know how to switch back. anyone know the original profile that was on the envy 14?
-
Regarding color profile switching: Did anyone try the xRite app that I posted a link to a few pages back? I have heard it works on the Envy 15 very well, and eliminates all the Win7 hassles. Never tried it myself since my calibratio program has it's own version of this built in. The app should let you place all active profiles in a popup type window and just 'click' on the profile you want.
Edit: HERE is the link to my earlier post with the xrite link... -
The screen shouldn't be set to max brightness it should be around 120 nits. If you see it to max brightness i don't think it will work correctly with with those profile.
-
control panel, colour management, advanced, change default, remove the profile
edit: kingcow appreciate the effort, i will leave it for a few weeks and see how it is, but at the moment i'm not sure if i'll stick with it. Colours seem to be a bit duller imho -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
Yeah that works fine. Assuming you pick either the xrite one or the bottom one (sRGB display profile with display hardware configuration).
there's like 8 or more in there that...I dunno they're just partial things that aren't really profiles but it gives an error and you hit ok and then pick a different one.
edit also wow, everything really is grayer with the xrite one. Kinda crazy (but probably closer to true colors. Though I think I like the false, default colors for the radiance just because) -
For those trying to plus in a secondary LCD monitor thru the mini displayport, I've just noticed that the flickering increases with my wifi card activity. So when I upload/download files at high speed, I get the flickering. When transfers are done, flickering become almost noticeable...

Hey guys... I remember reading somewhere in this thread about people's systems hanging after waking from sleep... I'm having the same issue with my DM4. What was the fix for it? Thanks!!!!
-
I just clean installed windows, but when I am trying to activate windows by using the key on my laptop, it does not activate....
Can someone tell me how to activate this? -
I had this happen to me.
Basically I had to activate it by phone but it was very simple to do so. It will take less than 10 minutes and is completely automated. Just choose the option to activate by phone and hopefully it will work for like it did for me. -
I think kingcow ICC profile have better true color representation then without any calibration on radiance screen. The grey should look grey, not bluish. That's what calibration does, some people might get used to the screen color without the calibration.
-
new_vaio_F is absolutely correct grey has to be nuetral or all the other colors will not be accurate. As an easy example use this forum page your looking at, the 'grey' bar on top of each post (with time and permalink #) should be a light uniform grey with no blue tinting at all, the 'quote' 'multiquote' and quick reply buttons should look even lighter grey (only blue is the text) and the very top of each page along with the thick grey bar where the ads at the top appear should be again just a light uniform grey with no blue tint at all. The 'user CP' 'FAQ' bar at top should be a darker blue/grey.
The best test of correct colors on this page is the backround color where the your username and avatar appear along with the same color backround that shows in quoted items in the posts, believe it or not that should appear a very light shade of 'frost green' with no blue at all, and the backround for your message should be the very lightest shade of blue grey. My guess is all of you are seeing this as an shade of light blue.....
HP has a very bad habit of using a very old default sRGB color profile on all there notebooks and i would be very surprised if they changed it on the E 14. Once you spend some time viewing the proper calibration if you switch back to the original one it looks blindingly terrible.... -
You should've saved the OEM certificate + backup the OEM_SLP key. Easier to do and avoids activation hell. But well, yeah, just like the other guy, using the key under the battery is just fine.
-
Wait.. do i have to buy microsoft words, powerpoint? why dont they automatially come with freakin windows 7..
-
It comes with MS Office, not the OS...

Okay so after sending my laptop in for repairs due to a clickety clackety track pad (which was suppose to be delievered back to me today 9/7), I get the news that it's being delayed till the 21st. For. A. . Touch. Pad. They aren't running out them any time soon (looking at you radiance display). You'd figure that they have a pile of them laying around. But no. (The delay may not mean they're out of the touchpad, but what else can it be? The technician lost his tools to unscrew the back of the laptop?)
Anyways, I was directed to HP sales cause well, they said to expect to get my lapto back at the end of the week. Except my 21days ends at the beginning of next week and they can't guarentee i'll get my laptop at the end of the week. So they gave me 30 days instead. But schools starting soon and I can be playing cat and mouse with HP. I'm feeling just exchange it cause it'll just arrive sooner.
Any inputs? -

He JJB, did you guys ever finalize the newer SSD tweak? -
It's common for the service department to not have or run out of stock on parts. They have a totally seperate p/n and supply source than the factory in china who I'm sure has 1000's in stock, they are a subcontracor and order direct from the manufacturer for production volumes. HP service orders in much lower volumes in the US and most likely from a distributor not the manufacturer. That is alo why the price is so much higher for replacement parts at the HP parts division.
The only suggestion i have is to escalate your issue up to the HP resolution people, call back whatever department you talked with and tell them you need to escalate it to a resolutions manager. FYI in my experience it is best to be nice and friendly, getting upset does nopt help. Just explain your situation and that the end of the month is not acceptable and if that's the best they can do you will have to cancel / return etc, they will either offer you a discount or possibly an advanced replacement. -
Does anybody else's caps lock light blink 3 times when booting up before the HP screen?
-
I'm curious about this also, please let us know once you get it.
Although I think the adapters work better, personally. The only VGA device I ever need to use is probably those VGA projectors in classrooms, and sometimes they are set up so that there is just a cable that is dangling around already hooked up and you just have to connect your laptop to the other end. Having your own cable in such a case would be a pain, and maybe even impossible. I might give monoprice's miniDP to VGA adapter a shot; I hope it works. -
Yes.
I'm not sure how many times it blinked, but I just noticed that too. -
It comes with MS Office Starter which has word and excel only.
-
Getting very close, looks like were down to 4 or 5 adjustments with little to no extra power draw (~0.5W) and 3 to 4C temp increases. Stay tuned....
-
My display went blank after I switched to integrated graphics after unplugging the notebook from the wall. I had to restart and the display came back on. Has anyone else had this problem?
-
Yeah I've had a few cases of my display blacking out lately.. not too sure what the deal is. Kinda sucks this isn't as on-the-fly and seamless as Optimus is.
-
anyone have a program to run in the background when i plug in my house? i have the hideous whine when i do plug in my g5.
-
That happend on a few E 15's and the fix was to use a different USB port... You can aslo try changing the advanced power plan > USB settings > USB selective suspend setting
-
how do I get my envy to display when I close the lid...if i close it for a extended period of time (like going to bed) everytime i open it I have to restart for the display to come on properly this is on ATI graphics
any ideas? -
has anyone else's screen been blacking out randomly sometimes when they right click on the desktop?
-
Would love to hear any ideas abt this too...
Guys, there was this utility or code or something that allows the battery to keep working until 1% rather than having the computer sleep/hibernate at 7%...anyone have any idea what it's called? -
happens on all 3 ><"
i saw that setting today. will mess with it tomorrow morning. -
Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Power Options>Edit Plan Settings>Change advanced power settings
-
guys, i would advise all to use the xrite software icc profile that kingcow has made is very good. After using it for a few hours, switching every now and then between this and the default profile, I must say the colours are a lot better with this profile, especially for videos and photos
