Is the screen on this edge to edge glass? If so do I have to get the radiance display to have this?

Its happened to me but I dont think its the same issue. I was at the HP screen on the boot up when the caps lock light blinked but it wasnt getting past the screen. It took me 2 boots to realize that my phone was connected on usb and it was probably trying to boot from it :\. Probably not the same problem or you would have noted it haha

I was actually talking about some command line. The problem with the option you posted is that even if you have the critical level at 1%, it will still shut the laptop down or whatever at 7%. But this command line allows it to actually get down to 1%.

    Ahhh... here it is: http://forum.notebookreview.com/5943846-post468.html

GOT MY ENVY TODAY AND YES IT'S NEW AND I DON'T KNOW WHY IT WAS SO DAMN CHEAP.

    1400 AUD so about 1250 USD for i5 520m 1600x900 radiance 4gb, 500gb, full invoice and everything!

currently i'm really happy with it, the keyboard doesnt flex at all really, and no whines temperature wise it's warm on where my hand touches the right side when typing=)

Can anyone tell me what i need to do if i want to overclock the GPU? and what bloat-ware stuff i need to remove?? or can remove? sorry a real noob at this stuff. thanks!

Does anyone know how to replace a hard drive on one of these things? I'm clear about the hardware part, but how do you get all of the pre-installed software (windows, photoshop) onto the new drive?

well. You first make some recovery discs.

you second backup the swsetup file to a dvd or two or external hdd just in case.

do a minimal recovery install from the recovery disc. But if you bought microsoft office 2010 or something you may wanna look around more so for it since it might not be in the swsetup folder and/or the product key may be god knows where (all the other stuff is somewhere in swsetup though..for the most part)

this is weird but when i play old school games like wc3 or counter-strike 1.6, the envy 14's 5650 should hold up well and play with 100 fps. I do get 100 fps but occasionaly I get lag spikes that take the fps down to 25 fps and then it goes backup. I notice it happens when the fan area is really hot. Is it due to the video card getting too hot? It should run these games fine since my older computer ran it with no problems.. It happened with a minimal recovery with stock drivers and a fresh install with the new drivers. Can't seem to find a fix. Can someone tell me their GPU settings? I set mine all to the left for performance and box for anti aliasing.

edit: Just started playing and after 5-10 minutes it spiked again. went all the way down to 15 fps for like 5-10 seconds before going back up to 100 again. whats going on!!!

Other users mentioned this before too. I'm on f.06, pretty much the same battery life as f.12. I don't think f.12 was completely tested or something, I got an ACPI error on f.12 that caused the computer to not function correctly. I've thought about going down to f.05 to see how the computer functions on that one.

For more anecdotal evidence, I've been getting really good battery life recently, and the only thing I've done is upgrade to f.12. I'm talking near 5 hour battery life.

Your SSD probably helps that a bit... but it might have better battery life . I just don't like when my computer messes up and an error message indicates that it was the bios... plus the recovery DVD problem.

Check on pg 1, there is a method that works for all, even clean installs. HP TOOLS partition not neccessary with the method. Aleckazee used it on their clean install and it worked well.

I'd like to buy a second AC Adapter, but the info is a little confusing. The chart on HP.com only shows the Slim 65w adapter as compatible with the e14, but when purchasing I had the option to buy a 90w Pavilion ac adapter, which I'm pretty sure is what it shipped with.

Does anyone know which is the proper ac adapter?

    thanks

I'm having a strange issue with the Synaptics Touchpad driver v15.0.24. It seems like when I am in Internet Explorer quite often the mouse refuses to move although I can left and right click. Even if I switch to other applications the mouse won't move. When I quit IE I can move the mouse again. It's a pain to uninstall and reinstall driver versions because I have to set all of the synaptics settings again to my liking so I hope there is some other solution here.

Happens to me very occasionally (maybe once every 2 weeks) in IE8, a reboot fixes it for me.... You can also try clearing your cache in IE8, it can cause freeze ups...

EDIT: Have you noticed an IE8 information bar popping up recently on this forum that says "An add-on for this website failed to run" ? Says to check security settings but can't figure out what is not 'running' correctly, it only happens on some NBR threads and is very irritating when it beeps each time I refresh a page....

If anyone is looking to enable remote desktop server on win 7 home premium:

    Missing Remote

I tried this and it works. You have to manually allow the default port to pass through windows firewall (port 3389). The installer does everything else automatically.

SC2 ultra 4v4? I assume by no lag spikes you mean besides the fact that the game is running at 5fps??? My desktop can't handle SC2 at ultra (well, I get ~30fps but that's something of a disadvantage in multiplayer) and it's got a significantly better graphics card.

Well, I wasn't getting battery life this good before and I've always had the SSD, so I dunno. It's also equally likely that I've just turned the brightness lower than I used to. And some people said maybe f.12 seems dimmer to them, although I also switched to using the x-rite color profile which might also have an effect. Bottom line, can't really jump to conclusions based on one person's experience.

Quick question to a reversed problem that I have been reading here.
Everybody seems to have a problem with the computer waking from sleep.

Now mine won't go to sleep (sometimes that is).
I have mostly the intel gpu (because I'm working at uni) on.
I want to go from class to class (example :p), so I shut my lid, so it's supposed to go into sleep. But everything expect the fans shut off, the lights stay on. My hdd light stops but my power light keeps burning.
And to get it working again I have to force the shutdown by keeping the power button pressed, and the start it again.

I reproduced this with the ati card, and with the inter card right here on my lap.

It doesn't matter if it's plugged in or not ... nor does it matter if I close the lid or I go start -> sleep.

I did a clean install of windows, worked good for a few days ... and now I have it again.

Oh and btw: in the power settings, at the media sharing option, I have set the option to let the computer go to sleep.

So any clues as to what's up?
Driver issue? I ran ccleaner as well. Found problems in the registry and cleaned up everything (including my hdd).

    So any idea's?
ps: I'm on the f.12 bios

It's been a while since I've posted here.

Quick question though. Is there any reason my CPU temps sometimes go haywire? My CPU temps which normally stand at roughly 35C have suddenly decided to hit the low 60s and my fans as a result have kicked into higher gear. All I have going on is my browser.

Ok, our problem may be a common occurrence. I rebooted and my temps are lower than before, though hovering between 45-50. My GPU is always set at integrated since I don't game.

One other issue I've noticed: My screen DOES touch the keyboard when I close my notebook. My keys leave imprints on the screen which I haven't tried cleaning. I hope they're not permanent. Seems to me the rubber lining around the screen isn't high enough!

I get the impression HP is still learning the name of the game. Glitchy GPU software, well-documented build construction problems, a screen that still hits the keyboard, and underdeveloped touchpad software are a few problems to name. I mean seriously. They allow Synaptics to leave out a feature that's found on other laptops that allows you to disable the touchpad while typing. Even Apple has that feature by default!

If you want my honest opinion, I'm sort of starting to regret my purchase. The palm hitting the touchpad issue is more annoying than I thought it'd be even with palm check maxed out. The screen size and resolution were the main reason I got this over the Macbook Pro. Now that I think about it, I may have made a bad decision. I don't recall having problems with my fingers hitting the touchpad when I had the MBP. :(

I just would like HP to bring the house down on Synaptics and tell them to tell their engineers to add a few lines of code into the software that allows for turning off the touchpad while typing. Tossing in a 1-2 second delay every time a key is pressed would be sweet. I suspect OSX has some kind of implementation like this.

Anyhow, I'm guessing HP was quick to service your HDD?

Interesting story. Friend's Envy 15 had heating problems. Turns out 1 of the 3 fans had died long ago. He got it serviced pretty damn quickly by HP.

EDIT: This may be a waste. But I am tempted to go back to the MBP. I'd miss the beautiful screen, but I wouldn't miss the touchpad or the random CPU running like crap. One problem: I love Win7 TOO MUCH.

If there's any way someone would input code into the Google touchpad software to input the feature I mentioned, that'd be NICE.

How does the 620M run in the Envy 14? How are the temps under stress? I'm putting a 540M in mine this weekend. I hope it OC's as well as this 450M has.

What kind of thermal paste did you use? Temp difference?

    quick to service my hdd?

nope. I haven't gotten them to agree to send a hdd alone and/or send me a box for the hdd instead of the entire laptop yet.

I mean they were gonna send me a box for the entire laptop but well I declined that after reading bacchus's experience with 'em where the ship back date kept getting pushed back by a week. for a month. Before he got fed up and had them send him back his envy still broken (cpu whine)
