    F.A.Q.: By poster - Htwingnut

CPU - that's the toughest because it all depends on what you want to do with your PC but here's my summary:

i3 - dual core, multithreaded, integrated GPU, no Turbo Boost. Ok for basic desktop tasks like web browsing, flash, MS Office, and some gaming.
i5 - dual core, multithreaded, integrated GPU, Turbo Boost. i5-430 and 450 are similiar CPUs but the 450 is newer and has slightly faster clock speed. Performance between the two in general is probably less than 10%. i5-520m offers some additional instructions for hardware virtualization and AES encryption which just aid in processing more quickly with a few other benefits
i7 - quad core, multithreaded, no integrated GPU, Turbo Boost - Quad core is powerful, capable of processing eight threads simultaneously, clock speeds generally slower than an i5, but have advantage of processing more threads. No integrated GPU means less battery life because it will be using the dedicated GPU all the time. Most likely 50% less battery life.

Screen - 1600x900 Radiance standard option, so not much to say, just it's supposed to be the absolute best.

    Note: Amazon is selling the HP ENVY 14-1010NR (WQ784UA#ABA) = 1366 x 768. Non-Radiance display.

Hard Drive / SSD - Hard Drives = cheap, effective storage while adding noise, vibration, and heat. SSD = expensive, fast storage, with no vibration or noise with minimal heat and power consumption. SSD speed is superior to HDDs in two respects; they write 3 to 5 times faster and have seek times that are hundreds of times faster then a HDD. Current gen SSD's have a long life, probably much longer than you'd ever keep your laptop unless you do constant large read/writes to it 24/7.

TYPE OF SSD USED IN THE ENVY 14: (Both support TRIM)
    160GB = Intel X-25M G2
    256GB = Samsung MMDOE56G5MXP-0VB

Memory = 4GB is sufficient for most. Two sticks is fine. You can get up to a negligible 5% performance benefit running dual channel, or two sticks of the same size and speed, as opposed to single stick. But a single stick gives the benefit of just popping in an additional RAM stick later. Otherwise, if you know you'll want 8GB later then maybe go with single 4GB.

Though, you are best to match RAM sticks as mix-match of RAM manufacturers can lead to problems
    .

So if you don't want to take that chance and you know you'll need more than 4GB, you may want to get it configured with 6GB or 8GB.

A note about RAM usage: There are not many programs that will use up the sum of 4GB. Requiring more than 4GB is reserved for multitasking of powerful programs or for multitasking very many programs at once. Adobe suite products come to mind and well as some A/V production suite programs.

Battery - The slice battery is apparently the "6 cell" battery they offer for $200 at the moment. It basically form fits the entire bottom of the laptop and is thin and gives up to an extra 100% or perhaps more battery life. No need to swap batteries as it works "smartly" with the built in 8 cell battery (59whr, 12.6 oz). Do a search at images.google.com for "envy slice battery" to see what it looks like. The trade off is that the slice adds weight (1lbs 15oz) and depth (14" x 9" x .5").

Preliminary Battery Runtime Results: (without Slice battery installed) (As executed by Stefan HT) Suggested insertion: jfk33

    - WLAN = ON
    - Display brightness 60%
    - standby at 10%: disabled

    Result: 4:10 hours

See Battery Life Log thread for posters with runtimes of 4:40 and 7hours.

Wifi - Important note (submitted by poster e14) - On the German preconfigured model 1010eg, the wifi card is Broadcom and not Intel as HP has advertised. The US version is Intel as specified (Centrino advanced N 6200).

FAN- The unit is set by default to run the fans at all times and at low speed at idle and during normal tasks. It can be disabled in BIOS. Though some users report that disabling it results in fans coming on even few seconds at medium.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT CPU THROTTLING ON BATTERY IN THE ENVY 14:
    - submitted by poster Aleckazee

The processor is able to run at full speed when on battery not like on the Envy 15 where it would be limited to 1.2GHz.

Proof: http://forum.notebookreview.com/6421176-post2308.html scroll down and you will see it.

NOTE ABOUT i7 Processors: They do not allow for switchable graphics. Only dedicated. Therefore a unit outfitted with an i7 processor will consume more power and shorten battery life.

NOTE ABOUT i3-370M Processor: (Contributed by Bronsky and Protiod) Unlike the i5 and i7, the i3's thermal maximum is 90 DegC (unlike 105 for i5/i7). Real world use would not see temps reach that high. But during CPU stressing, it can.

Potential CPU WHINE Fix: (If you experience this anomaly, try one or both of the following)

CPU Whine information and test procedure - by poster M.to.walker
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/6492940-post8941.html
Warning: Do not touch MSCONFIG processor settings!

If you touch the #of processor settings in MSCONFIG/boot/advanced options you will get false # of Core/Thread readings in CPU-Z.
It will also lock your processor at one core and it will run at max speed.

NOTE: Some Envy 14's are shipping with older BIOS dated 4/22/2010

You may want to update to BIOS with date 6/18/2010
You can download it from HP's website:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&cc=us&submit=Go »

Or see Justin's driver thread above for the latest BIOS update.

Be sure to run it as administrator and have no windowed programs running (nothing on taskbar open).
Otherwise you stand the chance of bricking your Envy.

    * Call 1-888-650-1544 or use online chat (details below).
    * An RMA is required for all returns and exchanges.

Step 2: Print your Return Label
    * You will promptly receive an email notification from FedEx that your HP Home & Home Office pre-paid return shipping label is available.
    * Follow the enclosed link to FedEx and print the label as soon as possible. This label will expire 5 days after issuance.

Step 3: Prepare your package for return.
    * Replace the product in its original packaging, making sure to include all items originally in the box
    * Remove, mark-out, or cover any original shipping labels and affix the new label
    * Write in bold letters on the package: "RMA [your return material authorization number]". For example: RMA R123456789

Hey guys, been creeping for longer than I can count. Figured now that this thread is up might as well start posting.

So theres been a lot of chatter on the other E14 thread but how many people are actually planning on ordering on launch day? I am, I'll be in the states untill July 14th, if its not there by then I'll have to get someone to ship it to Canada for me, anyone know what the procedure/cost is for that?

I know I'll be ordering it on launch day.

What upgrades is everyone going for?

    Personally...

    Screen upgrade (1600x900)
    i5-520m
    160gb SSD

So I'm guessing it'll be $1525 before my 25% BCB and 10% academic discount.

Well I'm buying my gift card tomorrow.

But this is my reasoning. Worst case scenario, I don't get any BCB, there's no tax or shipping on the e-gift card so I lose absolutely nothing.

So for a few hundred of dollars in cash back I think it's worth a try.

    I'm also up for

1600x900 screen <<<----- must have for me.
i5 450M or 520M depending on the price

450m vs 520m - as far as the benchmarks I've seen are concerned, they don't seem to suggest too much difference in performance between the two. I know 520M has AES and other instructions enabled, but I'm skeptical how they translate into real world performance.

These are exactly my specs! I am curious what you will pay. Let's compare prices when you know, just to figure out the prices difference between the US and Germany. I've paid 1299 EUR without coupons and 1197 EUR with coupons, makes a total of 969 EUR (~1160 USD) without tax.

Why start an owner's lounge when there are no owners yet? It will just fill up with speculations and discussions about what kind of specs everyone is getting, just like this thread.

Why can't HP release some definitive info about this laptop? We're less than a week away from the release day and there is still speculation regarding this laptop.

For one, the academic discount and BCB cannot be combined. And I also wouldn't count on the 25% BCB lasting 4 more days. Last time it came it only lasted for 3-4 days total, iirc, and it started again yesterday.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I think a few of us on the forums are going to try to get 25% BCB on a gift card, and then use the academic discount and the gift card while buying the laptop.

That sounds cool but how do you plan on doing that?

Edit - Oh, I see. You buy a gift card from HP using BCB and then use the gift card to buy the Envy 14. But that won't work

I want to know, which is faster? The 640 GB 5400 rpm or the 500 GB 7200 rpm? I'd assume they'd be about the same speed due to the higher density of the 640 GB, despite the lower rpm.

Iir I read something that said the battery life and performance difference between 5400 and 7200 laptop drives was more or less insignificant.

I'd use the Envy 14 for HD video editing (Adobe Premiere Pro). Is a SSD really recommended for this purpose?

hey all! i'm pretty new at dealing with / understanding laptop specs, so i have a few questions...
i'm not a gamer -- i'm just getting the envy 14 so i have a nice laptop for college. so here are my questions:

what are the pros and cons of getting an SSD vs. HDD? which is more expensive? which do you think would be better for my purposes (mainly internet use, watching tv and movies, listening to music, and other general laptop uses)?

i'm pretty sure i'm gonna get an i5, but what exactly are the differences between the i5-430M, -450M, -520M, and -540M? (those are the options i see available for the Envy 17) again, which do you think would be better for my purposes?

    thanks!

SSD is more expensive, has less space, but is blazing fast compared to regular hard-drives (which have more space. we're talking compare 160 gigs to 500 gigs space wise).

i5 differences aren't that noticeable unless you're doing video editing and/or other processor intensive activities. 430m should be fine.

According to things I've read, 520m gives a relatively big performance increase in respect to the 430m while maintaining the same power draw and (possibly lower) temperatures.

it just may not be a $100 bump. depends on what you can afford

It's called paisley. It's a droplet-shaped vegetable motif of Indian and Persian origin. It used to be hugely popular as a design for men's ties, so really I believe it's considered to be masculine.

Not like that it matters, I think it's subtle enough to be interesting without being distracting.

The benefits you're likely to see with an SSD are faster startup times, faster loading times for your programs, and, potentially, a small boost in battery life. However, even with Bing Cash Back at 25%, you're not likely to get the upgrade to an SSD (with half the storage space) for less than $200 over the price of a regular HDD. If you don't need to blaze into Windows and your programs, or if you need decent storage space, then you definitely don't need the SSD.

It sounds like your processing needs are basic, unless you count 3D animation or video editing as "other general laptop uses". You should be totally fine with the i5-430. If you want to upgrade the CPU, you'll probably get more bang for your buck by going to the 520 - it should be a $100 upgrade and offer a better clock speed increase per dollar than the other upgrade options. That's probably not necessary, but if you want it, there you are.

Say if one wants to max out his lappy's potential in playing PCSX2 or Dolphin emulators, should one opt for a 540m? Or will a 520m be completely sufficient for those CPU intense tasks? In b4 going to PCSX2 forums, cuz they dont know squat there about laptop cpus.
