I'll be getting the 540, better screen, slice, was going 8gb ram but now I think I'll go 1x4 gb and buy another and install myself. What do people recommend for aftermarket HDD?

I would highly recommend an x-25 intel ssd over a HDD, you'll see more significant improvement than any ram/cpu upgrade trust me. If you are wanting a good HDD then I'd go with the 500gb seagate momentus XT, a good hybrid drive allowing ssd speeds for programs/applications used very frequently (e.g. OS) and 7200rpm for the rest of the stuff on the drive; e.g. music, games and video's which really don't benefit from the speed boost an SSD provides

a question to someone who's a bit more in the now how than me when it comes to SSD, what's the limit %wise of data you can put on your ssd before it affects performance?

    Interesting! Thanks for sharing.

I like my tech tight and simple, so I'm not a fan of the paisley finish.

Where can I pick up a momentus XT? I looked online and couldn't find it anywhere.

    Well said.

I like the paisley design, but wish HP would provide buyers with additional options like a cool grid pattern. As the Envy's design matures I believe consumers can expect different surface designs on future Envy's, just take a look at HP's previous foray into finishing patterns on the plastic laptops.

unlikely. HP has different designs but never offers consumers the option to choose a design

    Never? Look here & here.

2 different laser (chemical whatever...) etched designs would be nice. Imagine HP offering Envy CTO options that provides user selected etched designs in the aluminum... beyond the paisley. ;)

no thanks i prefer the paisley finish. i find skins to be extremely tacky looking, similar to dice hanging from the car mirror.

I think the BCB is back to 10%, or atleast that's what it's showing me when I try it, can anyone confirm or deny this? If it's 10% I'm just going to go with hp student discount.

Still showing 25% for me. Go to Bing's home search page and search "hp" and then click on the banner with the BCB symbol next to it.

Notebookcheck: Review Intel Core i3/i5/i7 Processors ?Arrandale?

"If you consider the criteria price, performance and power consumption, the Intel Core i5 should be exposed as the obvious winner."

According to this review, there is a noticeable performance increase between the 520m and the 430m. The 520m also seems to use the least amount of power which means cooler temperatures and longer battery life.

Just FYI if you're still deciding between CPUs.

Well considering we don't know how long the 25% bcb will last, and that extra 15% is quite a bit for a college student, I want to order as soon as possible.

Ya, it's 5% if you turn off ad-block. It's 10% if you leave adblock on, and go to Cashback Stores > H > HP Direct.

    So sad so Sad.

Just teasing you! I can almost guarantee that it won't go back up to 25%, they know a large group of early adopters are going to be buying the envy 14 with or without BCB.

I read somewhere they have agreements worked out. It's precisely for this reason there were brief periods of downtime for bing cashback on eBay.

Yep you're right, they did. HP coupons and Bing cashback have been completely independent of any new releases. They may or may not be there but the release of a new model doesn't portend anything.

Where some you guys are coming up with statements to the contrary is beyond me when pass evidence over the last year+ have proven otherwise.

Oh please stop spreading that myth.
