So, I just recently bought an Envy 14...
...and I have a few questions!
1. BUILD DATE -- My build date was listed as July 13. Does that mean that the laptop will be completed being built by July 13? Or that they will have just started building it on the 13th? I have standard shipping (5-7 business days), and I'd like for it to be in by July 27 for the release of Starcraft II
2. WINDOWS 7 -- There's so much bloatware on HP computers that I want OFF my system! Right now my computer will be shipping with Windows 7 Home Edition, but I hear that Windows 7 Professional Upgrade is available to Students for $30.00. Now, I don't exactly know how this works, but if I were to install it, will it wipe everything and leave my computer as if it had a fresh, clean install of Windows? Or.... actually I really don't know how this works, can someone help me understand whether this is a good idea or not? Lol
Thanks!!

I doubt it's true - but I think there's some validity to it. However, I think this should only be true for orders that are placed within the same day.
Think of it from HP's perspective. If two people order a laptop, one orders a $1000 laptop and one orders a $2000 laptop, the second person represents twice as much business for HP as the first person. So if two people are threatening to cancel their order - which do you think HP is more concerned about?
You can chirp about morals/ethics all you want, but at the end of the day HP has a business to run and they need to satisfy their highest paying customers first. You yourself are probably getting better customer service than someone ordering a lower end model (like the d series). It's called customer segmentation and it's a proven business model. From my experience, they have been nothing but kind to me even throughout all of these delays. -
I doubt this is true. I went with the 500gb 7200rpm drive- not the most expensive drive option- but upgraded ram, CPU, WWAN and battery to the point where the laptop became very expensive indeed and I got the delayed message. -
Not really. M11x was delayed because of power adapter shortage. All it takes is one screw up or unexpected spike in sales by the component vendor to delay things.
-
So all of the orders that have shipped already have been with SSDs? =(((
-
Build date is built by date.
Save the swsetup folder before you do anythhing. because it has all the drivers and software in it. Then make the backup disks. Then you can do a clean install. A Clean isntall involves reformatting the drive and then installing the OS. Otherwise, all you would be doing is an upgrade install which would keep everything as is except install windows 7 pro components. -
Awesome!
I LOVE hiking in Montana, Wyoming, and the GYE! It's soooo beautiful! -
What do people think would give battery battery life? the lowest Core i5 or the Core i3? either CPU would fit my needs.
-
Doesnt anybody have theirs yet, who can report on battery life, thats the only thing keeping me from getting this thing. Ive heard that it only gets 4hrs w/o slice, but im hoping that that is with dedicated gpu enabled, would really like a confirmation on battery life with integrated only.
-
if either would fit your needs, then save the $$ and get the i3...
what are you going to do w/ your MBP? Seems kind of redundant to get the Envy, esp. since your MBP is an i5... -
That's not very nice. Some of these people may actually NEED this laptop by a certain date.
-
Nah, HP just felt rewarding those who ordered the Envy first with some under-the-table cashback.
-
Hard not to be, after all, most of us have "invested" $1000+ into this laptop - unless that's pocket money to you, I'd be worried.
Think of it another way. A $2000 E14 is on one end of the spectrum-its an outlier, the majority of HP's business doesn't stem from more "expensive" orders. Rather, it stems from the base/or around the base, meaning HP makes most of their money from the $1000-$1300ish E14's being sold. Which do you think HP would be more concerned about - Ten people ordering E14's for $2000+? Or 100 people order E14's for about $1100 (and thats just at base price)? -
Well if it dies a 3rd time I'm selling it for parts.
I really just want to hear about battery life, hoping for at least 5hrs, touchpad and heat. I loved the ENVY15 I tried the touchpad was just TERRIBLE. -
Can you do a clean install using the Upgrade version of Windows 7 Professional? Or would I need to purchase a full standalone copy?
-
Yes you can. As long as there is/was an OS on the drive.
-
I wonder if HP envy will ever adapt to a nvidia processor? Maybe fermi? because CUDA seems to be the fire burning on the dance floor XP
CUDA architecture for mil/aerospace - Data Respons
OR
YouTube - Real time finite element modelling using CUDA
And this just looks cool: YouTube - nvidia CUDA
and this: YouTube - DirectX Compute Ocean Demo Running on NVIDIA CUDA-enabled GPU
plus this: YouTube - nvidia physx test
I think I changed my mind for nvidia..there coming back XP -
Does HP ship with a standalone install disk, or is it a clone/disk image back to their factory default? grr @ bloatware.
-
Did none of you read that the upgrade is not useful if Windows 7 is already installed on your computer.
-
Everything you asked is in the OP or linked to on the OP.
If the MBP is your baseline for a touchpad then your going to be disappointed. Nothing is as good as a MBP touchpad. -
Got notice mine had been shipped...not too pleased with how long it'll take. I requested 2 day shipping from the get go, but the tracking number says it won't be delivered until 7/14
-
No they do not come with OS install media. The disk image is the factory default with all bloatware.
-
did you get ssd too?

No, I got the 320GB HD. I think I will get delayed. I got all base configuration. -
better chance it wont be delayed actually

HP overnighted me an HP Envy 13 for my trip so my Envy 14 will arrive while i am gone....
So just some thoughts on the Envy 13..13 screen size is small so glad Envy 14 has 14.5 screen. Expecting build quality to be the same which is very impressive....my biggest gripe with this machine is the touchpad...i feel its absolute crap. I don't have anger issues but I almost smashed this thing on the ground in frustration...lol
i am use to a touchpad with 2 click buttons...these are one giant touch pad so if your used to having ur thumb on the left button to click, and do things faster you will have a hard time adjusting to this....basically if ur thumb touches it, its going to jump around...ontop of that just moving the cursor does not seem precise and just clunky...i attribute this to the dragging type surface they are using here, ur skin drags on it. it has a rubber texture to it....
Our German Envy 14 owners....do you have any insight on the Envy 14 one, is it the same as this....i reverted to a mouse immediately but i might not always be able to use one... -
Actually i got all base...mine got delayed... -
Kangu, what are your impressions on the sleeve, i am thinking of getting one.

I like the look (thanks for the picture, kangu!) and it seems strong enough to hold the laptop without ripping the seams. -
Acer TimelineX 4820T review -- Engadget
in case any of you wanted to see an official review i know alot of people were comparing this acer 4820 to the envy 14 so i hope this helps =D -
heres one other laptop that might be quite nice when it gets reviewed, still love the envy 14 but its nice to have options. competition makes the world a better place haha

hurr durr no dedicated graphics

Wrong thread to ask, but I'll answer anyways. As I have said before, I don't have my Envy yet, so I cannot tell you how well it fits. But what I can tell you is that, personally, I think that it is pretty good quality. Its pretty slim, won't add much thickness so that I can still stuff it in my backpack, and it provides a cushion where the zipper is so that it does not come into contact with the laptop which I think is a nice touch to it. And when you zip up the bag completely, the zipper lining is not visible! I'll add a couple of pictures with it open and closed to show you guys later when I get off from work if you guys want.
(Please note that I have never owned a sleeve before so my comments on this may differ with more experienced people, this is just my opinion)
EDIT: As IKilledYourHamster mentioned, I think he is right about the sleeve not ripping. Everything seems solid for me. -
No it's not, I see nothing in there about actual battery time, or if the trackpad is as bad as the 15's is, and I see nothing about actual heat on your lap.
HP's press release numbers mean nothing to me I want to see REAL numbers. -
Many thanks Kangu for your quick reply, just what i wanted to know.
-
Np....I'm like on this site every moment while I'm awake to read updates xD
-
Aaagh figures
-
Updated album with new closeups of the sleeve. Primarily the zipper area.

I can't wait! My parents just moved up there (Whitefish) so I will be flying out of Atlanta and the day I arrive is the day I also am supposed to get my new laptop! It will be a very exciting time haha. We'll be hiking around Glacier National Park and I know we are going up to Calgery one day (passport came in today, more good news since they said 2-3 weeks which would be the week of me leaving.)
More on topic, what would the benefits be of purchasing Win7 Pro as opposed to home? I'm entering med school this August and they have a great deal on Microsoft software and am wondering if it would be worth it to wipe the drive and upgrade the OS. -
Ok, sweet. I will do this tomorrow, since I'll likely be calling about it not shipping.
Dazed, I just got back from a 2-week trip in Yellowstone and the Tetons...it was awesome.
Hope you have a great trip. Oh, and get used to traffic jams being buffalo/bison/deer/elk/bear crossing the roads!
To answer your question, I am getting W7Pro for its VPN settings. My school has a setup where we don't have to buy all the software (MATLAB, CAD/CAM stuff) if we log into their virtual machine. W7Home doesn't allow that. There are other things in it, but I personally won't be using them.
Here's a comparison chart: Which one is right for you? - Microsoft Windows -
Cheers for the pic update
-
Not sure about Envy 13/15 if they upgraded to the newer trackpads but I do know the Envy 14 has the same trackpad as seen in their newer lines of HP's I saw at BB like dvt6 etc. So I assume Envy13 has the same plastic touchpad..

Anyone bought from Ebay and then had it shipped to Canada? Would that work?
-
a bit late here with updating u guys about the delay notice stuff, but I ordered the 740m 4gb ram 1 dimm and the 320gb hd delayed from the 7th to the 12th
i called and she also said that everyone got expedited shipping. I then got another email later with a $25 coupon. It wasn't in the original delay notice email. Sorry if this is old news to every1, since i missed the last 35 pages or so. -
Hey guys, a little off topic, but is FLOPS important for scientific/engineering computation? or is Integer operations more important?
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
HP Parts Store - HP Computer Parts - HP Printer Parts - Compaq Parts
yeah it's in the hp part store for 150.
damn man why does it cost $200 if you order it with the computer. We may want to double check and see that this is the right serial number -
FLOPS = FLoating point Operations Per Second
Integer Operations are just what they sound like
If you take a look here wikipedia does a great job of explaining the difference between int and float. For heavy engineering/science, I'd say they're probably using floating point operations more just because you get a significantly higher level of precision...that said GPUs tend to excel at FLOPS whereas CPUs tend to excel at integer operations (someone please correct me if I'm wrong on that). -
I know what they are actually, I was just making sure, because wikipedia says that FLOPS are used in scientific operations and integer operations are used for data manipulation like if A equals to B or if A is Not B then C is A type thing. I was just trying to make sure if flops is truly the best in operation power, performance, speed and precision?
-
I'd say that scientific/engineering applications will likely be float-heavy, but it really varies based on the program itself and how it was designed by the programmer. Is there something in specific that you're thinking of?
