Its bigger brother (N53) has a GT 425M... which does not impress me by the name of it, but I'm willing to wait for reviews. (By the way, it is listed as DX10 with 1GB GDDR3, which means it is most likely yet another re-brand, and not an actual mobile Fermi)

In the OP it says that the Amazon model of the Envy 14 is a non radiance display. Does this mean that it is matte?

It means it's a brightview display, which is ok, but nowhere near Radiance screen in terms of brightness and color gamut.

No. It's just maybe, not as bright, and the pixel count is lowered. Goes from 900p to 7xxp.

I will be repeating what other people have said, but I called about my order. She said there are parts that are shorted. She couldn't tell me what part exactly though. My order is definitely delayed but she said I will get an email tomorrow morning and compensation.

It's possible that I am just thick as a whale omelet, but when considering laptops I spent 10 minutes trying to figure out Asus' arcane cavalcade of laptops and just gave up. It's like they didn't want me to figure out what the hell was what. If someone can explain it (perhaps on a different forum) I would appreciate it.

Its going to have a fermi, I think the model will be 460M. Nvidia is about to officially announce this new line of GPU on the 12th, in just a few more days. I am hoping that we will see more laptops using it, ones with good quality screens. Notice how similar that these new nvidia model numbers look to intel CPU model numbers... what the eff is up with that.

Interesting, I heard nvidia was going to release/announce their desktop versions of the 460 pretty soon, they must be incredibly irritated ati is getting so much adoption in notebooks to come out with a mobile version near the same time.

<s>There were some MSI laptops that appeared at a tradeshow with one of these new GPUs in it, this one being a GTX.

I'm so proud of myself for having managed to read through the last 100 pages of thread :p Out of curiosity, how much do you guys think an SSD will improve the performance of the laptop? I'm looking at the screen know, and it's an expensive option, but I could do a 160GB SSD if it makes stuff awesome. Any ideas?

Once you use SSD's, you'll never go back. I don't even consider it optional at this point. Every time i look at a laptop i automatically add $400 to it for a 160gb Intel SSD and assume that's the base price.

you put in part number 602410-001

it'll bring up what we think is the slice. It's the part number found in the envy14 assembly manual. But well...hell if I know when it'll ship or if it's in stock (it may just be in the system 'cause it's in the system)

Wow, that much of a difference? The only thing is that 160 GB doesn't seem like tons of storage, do you keep the laptop hooked up to an external hard drive?

SSD's are not meant for storage - if you use them for storage it is a complete an utter waste (i.e. for movies and such). Do yourself a favor and get a portable hard drive (can be had on the cheap these days).

I seriously don't think that the 460m is going to be a fermi, since the 480, uses a 100w TDP, that is twice as much as the 5870

You can see a review of the 480m at anand they have a clevo barebones

The probability as always is that nvidia will rebrand the same core the g92b, so... a rebranded 8800 AGAIN

Wait, what? Where did that part # (602410-001) come from?

EDIT: Read back a few pages. Saw that the part # comes from the manual. Where do you find the part price on HP's site, though?

EDIT #2: Alright, I found it, but I can't really tell what I'm looking at. It looks like the price is $150. So, $200 during the Envy 14 configuration, while expensive, seems about right since that includes the standard 8-cell + the 6-cell slice, right? Am I missing something?

its not they suck or that ATI is bad and that S3G is going to go back from the grave and take all

    its that:

Nvidia has been doing the rebranding of the g92b core since... its release... its old, but is still kicking it.

Last year Nvidia made the decency of releasing a NOTEBOOK gpu with the g200 core (that is from the desktop gtx 260 and up) there 2 cards that I know that uses this core, the gt240 and the gts 360m. And I have to add that both cards lose to their ''earlier'' version, the gt 230m and the gtx 260m.

Nvidia gpus consume more energy than the ATI performance counterparts, sometimes much more, sometimes just a little more.

The only successful GPU that Nvidia released for notebooks in in 2 years is the 9400m chipset, it offered much more performance than the integrated parts from intel and ATI.

The success of ATI in laptops is visible, the most released gpu of last year was the 4650, this was used and popularized dedicated gpus in laptops.

ATI is becoming Nvidia, it released a rebranded versio of the 4650 and the 4570

The performance of the 5870 is lower than the 480m, but the 480m is VERY limited in terms of battery life, size, and cooling.

ATI gained grounds in the notebook market, in a way that it holds now 50% market share, basically it gained more than 10% market share. That is not something that you can gain in a year without the competition giving you the way.

The other thing is that physx, for me this is such a unknown quantity even at this point several years after it was released.... Most game companies use a third party physics engine instead of this.

And ATI uses the open CL and another physics engine, both are open software.

I seriously dislike the way that nvidia has been led in the past few years, but I do want it to stay healthy, competition is always a good thing

Nvidia makes a finished and polished product, then supports it throughout its entire lifecycle. ATI makes trash and gives you the privilege to buy it and beta-test for them, and gives very poor support. Thats been my experience. Case in point, check out this green quake4 glitch... only on an ATI my friends.
    Quake 4: Everything is green! - dslreports.com

How do I fix the Green graphics bug in Quake 4 at FreakyGaming

ATI simply made a list and said the cards affected aren't supported to play that game, leaving gamers themselves to find a workaround to the problem, no driver update, their solution was for you to go buy a new ati card or new laptop.

ATI has been gaining ground lately because they've been making good performing chips that run cooler than Nvidia's and are generally less expensive. However, there are some things about Nvidia that are still ahead of ATI. Nvidia has much better driver support, and there chips can utilize some additional features like CUDA, which can be very useful in pro apps.

If you're looking to game only and are looking for a good price/performance ratio as well as good cooling, ATI is probably the way to go.

If you're doing professional 3D work, then Nvidia is the best way to go. The Quadro series outperforms the ATI FirePro series by far, because of superior drivers and more features.

I'm glad HP and other companies are using more ati gpus in their notebook lineup. At the moment they have the better cards, and generally use less energy for performance gained.

As a side benefit, it sends more money to amd so they can do another ati refresh and help with bulldozer and fusion.

I grew up playing Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake (never played Quake 2)...

Though really, saying ATI releases "trash" and "beta products" is ridiculous. NVIDIA has been releasing its "finished product" ever since the 8800GT. By that I mean, they've been repackaging the 8800GT all the way up until this generation. :)

My back in the day story on nvidia is more recent, and I have a lot less of a fanboy ethos because i heard about it at their nvision conference (set a world record at that geForce lan - epic sh!t): the thing with the faulty die sealing on mobile gpus that caused them to just fail to death. Especially if you consider that ATI is widely regarded to provide a better cost/performance/energy usage/noise combination at the moment, nvidia just isnt what it was back when the 8800gt came out.

I'd be more inclined to nVidia's Optimus if there were a way to enable/disable Optimus itself (i.e. go to manual switching when desired). Unless there is a way to do that, then all they need is DX11 and I'm not so focused on Envy 14 or Acer 3820TG.

It would be nice if Optimus had a manual switching mode (it should be a simple driver update). Even better, if Optimus-enabled laptops had a dedicated hardware button for switching GPUs.

Really though, it only would benefit the power user. Optimus was designed to be as user transparent as possible.

ATI beta products? that's something that I'm waiting to see.

since they moved to the new naming scheme the gpu are actually getting better and better.

A quake 4 glitch is not something that concerns me at all...

And yes I played with wolfestein and duke nuke when I was 10 or something.

    e14..... tsc

And better drive support? thats something that still gets to people via the lame begin of ATI. That is not something that is in any relation to reality.

Actually the verde program is worse than the current ATI mobile program, since that they update their drivers in a much more spaced way than the current monthly bases of ATI.

Well, you get the standard 8-cell battery either way, so $200 doesn't actually make sense if they're willing to sell the slice separately for $150. One of the two prices on their part is wrong, so I had them go ahead and price match it.

In my experience with ATi and nVidia, ATI has always been consistent. I have only used desktop graphics up to now so this may not have any relation to mobile graphics but my observation is that the nvidia cards tended to overheat and artifacts began to form. I bought a 9600 GSO and it was great until I researched to find it was just a re-branding of an older graphics card by them. I now use an XFX 4850 in my desktop for games and I couldn't be happier. The fact that it's ATI that's going into the ENVY 14 was a huge selling point for me. I do like the automatic switching of nvidia but manually switching between the 2 isn't that bad either.

I saw it posted on another part of these forums that if someone gets a good deal, you can call HP and ask for the exact same deal they got, all you have to do is tell them the customer transaction number, and they will look up the other transaction and price match you to it. Not sure if you have to match the whole order this way, or if they will let you do it item by item.
