the i7-640M has yet to launch. since the i7-640UM has integrated graphics (ref m11x), does that mean this one will too?
edit: my bad, 640M is only dual core

If any encryption is being used in an application, it is likely the AES cipher. So, everyone keep that in mind when buying a processor.
Edit: HTTPS encryption often uses AES as well, which could explain the Comm. suite score differences. -
I'm on a 4 to 5 year cycle. But I stagger my purchases. So I'll buy something powerful as my main. Then a year or two later something else to supplement it. Then a tablet every 3 years.
So later this year, I'm in the market for a new supplement and next year a new tablet.
But this all depends on what's out, for how much, and if I can afford to do it at the time. Otherwise, I'll resort to upgrades and/or mods if it's cost effective. -

I'm on a 3.5 year old Asus G1 with a fan that's makes a loud clicking noise that annoys anyone who listens to the webcam's microphone.
it also idles at 60 *C
heheheh and has a battery wear level of 65%
Man this thing is bound to the wall now. Having more than an hour of battery will be nice. -
I got my company to buy this one.
I convinced then to rent a Precision M4500 and they offered to buy my new notebook to get out from under the monthly payments.

can somone please just quickly tell me for running games any game (modern warfare 2, crysis, dirt 2 ect...) which processor is better the i7-720QM or the i5 520M? assuming heat and battery life arn't a factor.
-
2.0, how did you get banned dude?
-
Nice find. I'd link in the OP but I want to wait for at least one more confirmation even those it is what would be expected. I'll update the OP to reflect a range of percent increase in battery life with the slice. Plus that it adds weight.

hey can anybody tell me if its possible to disable turbo boost when on battery and have it auto come back when plugged in to ac?
thanks -
Those games you mentioned take advantage of the GPU more than the CPU. Later games will probably take advantage of both GPU and CPU.
-
First I'd like to know why you want to do that? It's been pretty much proven that with turbo boost you use less power because the tasks finish quicker. The i5's have a very good power savings mode and idle at the same wattage with or without turbo boost.
You can disable it with a free app called i7 turbo from techpowerup.com, or with an app called ThrottleStop HERE -
So has anyone else gotten an Envy 14?
I want more reviews,
My friends going to buy a comp and I'm trying to recommend this mean while in the back of my mind I'm still only 3/4ths game, might use the 21 day return y'know -
im literally in the same exact position mtowalker, i wanna recommend this laptop to my friend but im still not 100% sure of it for myself. why does hp have to be so insecure with their products and not allow reviews until like 3 weeks after. thats literally total bs it makes me think somethings up since they dont want it reviewed so bad.
-
Aswell as what JJB said ^, Windows has functions for limiting the CPU load, but it really isn't something you should worry about, Intel CPU's in particular are very good at dropping their battery demand very quickly once the CPU begins to idle.
-
oh..well the envy 14 doesn't have to be the choice...its an open question. So is the GPU job just to render? So data manipulation, analysis, research, and all that stuff in scientific/engineering computation (on like cad, 3d, cfc, fluid dynamics, FEA, research on the unknown
, video/audio analysis, data from sensors, etc.) are done by the CPU? I mean couldn't having a top of the line gpu and using say OpenCL or CUDA allow more supercomputer like performance? Would I have to rewrite the whole program using that language in order to use it, or is the just a simple add-on download?
-
I've got a 6-year-old Compaq with an AMD Athlon 3500+ (1.78 GHz), 1 Gig of RAM, integrated soundcard and an ATI XPRESS 200. It's literally falling apart.

The i5-520M supports AES New Instructions and applications need to be written or recompiled to take advantage of it.

This is one application that would benefit from that proc.

Since we're all talking about how long we've had our previous computer I figured I'd post mine as well. That's me on the left and this was taken when I first got the Harwell, which we call WITCH.
Needless to say I'm looking for something a bit faster and more portable. The Envy 14 hopefully will fit the bill. -
is the oem memory high quality or am i better off taking my upgrade money and going to newegg?

Okay I finally found this forum after looking for a while for reviews on the Envy 14. I was close to ordering the 15 until I saw that the 14 and 17 had been released and had solutions to some of the concerns people had with the 13 and 15. Like ostartero said above, it would take me ages to read all 593 pages so I apologize if this is somewhat repetitive. The only questions I have right now are where is everyone ordering their laptops from exactly to get the money off and student discounts? Secondly, have any significant issues been reported yet for the E14 like the heat issues were reported for the 15? Thanks in advance.

This is my desktop
And this was my laptop

Here was mine, before my Acer 3820TG got here on Friday.

Unlike with a desktop, you won't see any appreciable differences in notebook RAM.
-
Those pics are hilarious BTW!
-
No heat issues have been reported for the E14 and no other unanticipated flaws. This is only based off of two models from our friends in Germany. Early this week people should be receiving them in the US and I anticipate plenty more reviews are on the way.
-
Most are ordering from HP. Some Ebay, Amazon and Costco.
As for the discounts, see the first page of the thread. The other thing is, some have called in to "complain" to HP and have received money back. Range of refund varies from $0 to $100.
No significant issues reported from our German mates who received their Envy notebooks already.
See first page for their in progress review. -
I might be wrong, but the only real worry people have right now - one not fully substantiated by tests - is battery life, which is reported around 4 hours, less with intense use. No problem for me, but might be for you.
-
As mentioned before, nobody really knows how the Envy 14 performs because not many people have it. Most people will be getting theirs starting next week. Mine ships out next week (assuming no delay). So expect lots of reviews and impressions from the Envy 14 from many people here that have been anxiously waiting for their Envy to arrive in about another 2 weeks at least.
-
This is what I'm coming from:
if the ENVY14 doesn't live up to my computer now I will call them and ask for a $1000 rebate. wish me luck -
This'll be my first laptop. I've been using desktops my entire computing life and never really needed a laptop badly enough to spend the money on one, but that has changed recently. This will be a compliment to my main desktop system: Intel C2D e8500 oc'd to 4009 mhz, 4gb ram, Radeon HD4870x2, 2.75 Tb storage, 37" LCD 1080p monitor, 5.1 surround. Went with the E14 because it was the best combination of performance/design/mobility, and I think it will fit its role nicely.

I just wish there was a list of which tasks and programs actually use these encryption protocols. That would make the decision much easier. -
wait whats with these protocols? will it effect me in my tasks?
is this protocol so NSA backdoor? I mean my field is pretty security and high government level. So is it gonna be a problem? Also as some says any ATI GPU will be fine or nvidia..So if its cpu dependant...will the i5 be worth it? I man the only reason i ask is because will 2 physical cores, 4 logical cores, 2 threads and around 4mb or 3mb cache enough? and how does the i5 help the protocol
-
Alright, just got a Logitech v220 mouse (blue) with my delay coupon for a whopping charge to my cc for $0.00! =P What's interesting is that without the coupon, tax and shipping raises the final costs to around $29, but if you get the price down to zero before taxes and shipping (it was $22, and I used my $25 coupon), the shipping becomes free. (and of course tax on something that costs $0 is, well, $0!)

I'm on a 5 year old dell inspiron 6000. though the only original parts still in use is the frame and screen. Throughout the years I've added a 1.7 ghz pentium m, 2 gb of ram, swapped the hdd, replaced the motherboard to add a 128 mb ati x200 graphics card, and replaced the keyboard. It still runs decent when it doesn't have any problems loading windows. I went out and bought an asus ul80jt at bestbuy after the i6000 crapped out yet again 2 days ago (I'm back on it now after reinstalling windows), though once the envy comes in the ul80jt is going back to bestbuy.
-
I swear I'm in a shootout because I'm dying to the pull this damned trigger already. Things keeping me back:
chance of an i5 540 processor
higher capacity 8 cell battery (I'm not sure why the heck the Whr rating is so low, they could have put so much more juice into the battery)
some kind of discount
different colors
whether to get an SSD or not, I have the budget for it, but maybe the money is better spent on accessories or towards a new desktop
some miraculous and sudden release of a refreshed Envy 15 with switchable graphics and a Radeon 5830 or higher -
It's like you read my mind.

Let me get this eyefinity thing correct. My little Envy 14 can hook up 2 external monitors correct? So technically i can have 3 monitors? If so then I see a place for my envy between my 2 19" monitors
-
The thing with Eyefinity, is that it makes the externals one giant monitor. I think the E14 was quoted to support up to 2? (someone correct me if I'm wrong). But if you just want "regular" externals so that you can have multiple screens, it can handle up to 5: 1 through hdmi, 1 mini display, 3 usb; 6 if you count the laptop monitor.
If you want to see Eyefinity in action, go youtube hands-on E14 and E17 with the product leader. Towards the end of the clip, he moves onto the E17 and you can see Eyefinity being used -
How long are you willing to wait? Cuz I have the exact same problem
-
I just want 3. Meaning externals on each side and the laptop in the middle. Is that possible? I sure do hope so because gaming with 3 monitors would kick butt. 2 monitors, not so much.
-
Again, not gonna happen, they have the mobo designed around the PM55 chipset which does not support switchable graphics... And the 5830 performs flawlessly with reasonable battery life
-
Ok, After I exclude Asus N82 because of the Nvidia Optimus
I'm down to Lenovo Y460 and HP Envy 14
I'm not sure what to order because those 2 look tempting.
To clear things up, I used to own 15.6 and I'm tired of the semi big size and i'm acutely planning to build a pc soon, but I want to have a portal laptop with 14" size
someone make full review on Envy 14 D: -
AFAIK you cannot run external displays out of a USB port, so I think you'll be limited to 2 externals plus the E14 display, or you could 'mirror' an external to another one but it would be pointless for gaming.
Should work but you might get a headache from focusing from the E14 to the externals on each side... -
Pretty positive this was discussed before and there are adapters for external displays via USB such as:
Tritton SEE2 USB 2.0 SVGA Adapter - Review, Specs, Prices -
Well all I would use the side monitors for is peripherals in mw2. I'd be aiming with the envy's display. I hook up a keyboard and gaming mouse so I can sit back and play. Man i hope this combination is possible. I've been dying to play with 3 screens on my desktop but my stupid card doesn't support eyefinity. I knew I should've waited.
