yeah, my name changed to my dad's name as well from using his cc. But since then, i bought a mouse (for free with my coupon) using my cc, so after that, the name changed back.

I also hope I can do that w/ squaretrade as well...
do you think the accidental damage w/ squaretrade is worth it tho for the extra $200? I men with that much dough i could get an HP warranty.

Accidental damage is a plus, and if you search the web you can find a 20% off coupon for squaretrade.com. That's what I did so my 3 years warranty + accidental damage was 239.99 when all was said and done. Plus with sqauretrade.com I believe you have 60 days to cancel and still get all of your money back if you decide to return the laptop.

As far as I know HP doesn't modify their orders. And I think they ship components separately, too. I ordered the sleeve, a cable lock and an HDMI cable. The cable lock and HDMI cable came in one box and the sleeve came in another.

LOL. the Booooing is rather effective....and yes, i'm frugal enough to not spend another ~$200 for an ssd down the line, yet also willing to spend $1100 on the spot for a laptop....i consider it a four year investment haha.

i think i could live without an ssd...i might just stay on boat with the envy 14...BUT

i remember reading the dm4t has about a ~5 hr battery life, but the envy14 has 4! well...i'm waiting for an official review (from liek engadget or something), cause i need it by Sept. 20th...so i needa decide by august 20th.
also, did any of the current owners get the HD webcam to work?

    Based on the dimensions given on HP's site... 14.01" (W) x 9.33" (D) x 1.09" (min H)/1.11" (max H)

... I used sizeasy to compare it to the dv6t (15.6") and the MacBook Pro in 13.3" and 15.4" sizes. It does look slightly smaller but how "noticeably" so is subjective. :)

If you want to do your own comparisons, just replace the items using the "my items" tab.

Anybody get an i7 on their Envy 14?
If so, any complaints about overheating? I'd like a first-person point of view opinion on this =D

Only the germans have gotten theirs so far and none of them got an i7, so no word yet on that.

    Don't know yet really.

    hello all,
goin to buy envy 14, but have some questions about RAM.
first of all, searching in this thread, can't find the manufacturer of envy's ram, can anyone tell me?
and second, regarding 6gb ram(1x2gb+1x4gb) i'm worried because of non matching memory size(2gb/4gb), how much will be it better then 1 stack 4gb?
if there's not much difference, maybe i should go for 8gb.
    thanx

I was going to do the same thing, HOWEVER, I read that most of those services do not cover opportunity theft. Meaning, if you have the laptop just sitting on your desk in your dorm and you leave to go to the bathroom, leaving the door open and it gets stolen, it wouldn't be covered. You'd have to have a police report showing that you did everything you could to prevent the theft...in this case lock the door.

I'm not sure if the one you're looking at is like this, but I'd check to make sure first. I'm personally going to get LoJack + Squaretrade. Hopefully I'll never have to make use of either.

I have a noobish type question.

Ive noticed several Envy buyers here in the forum have mentioned that they plan on doing a clean install of Win 7 Pro, replacing the Win 7 Home Edition that comes preinstalled on their machines.

So, what are the advantages to replacing home version with Pro?

well if you do a clean install then you don't have all the hp bloatware, more Hard Drive space due to all the crap that's now not on your computer which is pretty important if you have a SSD which doesn't have that much room. Less stuff running in the background lets your processor idle and not be constantly stressed so you get much better battery life and faster running computer.

With Pro you get XP mode which gives you compatibility with XP software,
Connect to company networks easily and more securely with Domain Join.
In addition to full-system Backup and Restore found in all editions, you can back up to a home or business network.

How much better is the Envy 14 screen vs the Envy 15? Screen brightness/resolution is my #1 priority and it seems like Envy and MacBookPro are the only players in that game near as I can tell. I'd prefer the extra centimeter of height with the Envy 15, but it doesn't have the "Radiance" display, whatever that is. Is there really much practical difference? The 14 strikes me as the better computer all around (back lit keys, non-weird function keys, two fans) but that extra centimeter is really, really enticing. I'm paralyzed with indecision.

i don't think the 15 inch screen will be that much of a difference. the envy 14 screen is supposed to be really good, and you can always connect to an external monitor if you want a bigger screen. me, i'll be connecting to a projector for my movies/tv shows and games, so i prefer a slightly smaller size for the portability factor.

it's a big difference. not that the 15 is bad (it's really really good from what i've seen) but the 14 is a significant amount brighter

    15 has more resolution, though

pick your trade off. 14 has better color gamut and contrast ratio.

All CTO orders ship from Shanghai, China. Nothing moves through HP's shipping depot. All are direct ship.

Going back to the Win 7 Pro, would you recommend selecting Pro on the configuration and then calling HP for the price check or selecting Home and then calling and have them change the configuration?

I use my Macbook on my lap, and on my chest in bed. Will that work with the Envy 14, it having its ventilation on the bottom?

Would the 6GB ram option for this laptop run dual channel or do the sticks need to be identical (ie 2+2 or 4+4)

Not true. It's around 15-20%. But even them the slowdown is not noticeable except via benchmarks. Still significantly faster than a HDD.

No not true, it may lose a few MB/s as you fill it up but it is still going to run circles around any HDD ever made. With Win 7 automatically running TRIM in the backround it maintains the performance levels to 90+% of the brand new, out of the box levels...

You may have read about issues before TRIM was available in older OS versions...

Man having a hard time deciding whether to get the i520 over i450 or opt out for the 160SSD over the 500GB.

my real worry is that 160GB won't be enough for me, but I don't really play games anymore its just the music + fairly large PS files I work with on my spare time.

I'd opt for the i5-450m and get SSD if you can only afford one or the other. Although if you can eek out another $100 somehow, it will really only cost you $70 after BCB.

160GB SSD is just the Intel G2 160GB. You can buy it anywhere, but not for $315, most likely minimum $400. And the slice who knows if/when we can order it separately.

does this mean the memory sticks need to be the same type or size?

DISCLAIMER: Dual Channel is supported only when the system is configured with DDR3 symmetric memory (e. g., 2x1024MB).

hard time deciding whether to get the SSD or not, garrrrrrrrrrr.

I already asked to cancel my first order, but since its already shipped I am going to have to wait for it to come before I will return it. I just put in my sister's old computer and its still very good so I don't think I will even open the E14 when I get it.

Let's simplify the decision. Do you need more than 100GB? Yes? No SSD. No? SSD.
