You can configure Quickstart in Windows, there is a small tool for it..
The button to get to choose about BIOS STartup and other tools is escape, just press it a few times when the computer starts booting up..

    I dunno.

however the click zone doubles as the horizontal single finger scrolling zone (I turned off double finger, don't like it. I may turn it back on later if I don't like single finger. It's a bit iffy on the far right corner for vertical. horizontal works fine)

you can also control the size of that single finger scrolling zone (how big/small it is. just noticed that).

well now if I can get coasting to work again...

    ok.

disabled quick start in the bios.

disabled action keys in the bios

disabled fast charge in the bios (don't have a slice. rather it just charge 100% on the main).

Enabled Hardware VT in the bios. It comes disabled.

edit: and that's really it in stuff you can control in the bios besides the fan always on or passive or whatever and well..there's a hard-drive and memory diagnostic you can use.

you can setup the boot ordering and you can turn booting from cd, floppy, and network adapter on and off (cd is on by default, other two are off).

...and you can set a delay time for hitting esc or whatever. F10 is go into bios.

If you use the 2 finger scrolling you only need 2 fingers to get the 'scroll' started, and then you can switch to 1 finger and use the whole pad to scroll with, no need for a 'scroll zone' or sizing it. Repeat -- once scroll is started with 2 fingers , as long as one finger remains on pad you are still scrolling and you can even switch fingers... It a little different at first but ince you get used to it the 1 finger scrolling seems terrible and very 'old school'....

Really?? I have seen that a lot with HDD's but not sata opticals! unfortunately mine is not here yet to check :(
the sata optical drive is a standard pin out, so even if they use their own interposer the sata dvd/caddy should plug straight into it

Sounds about right for an i3, IIRC I got 2.3 That test really shows off the advantage of the multi core CPU's for rendering. The 5830 got 37 FPS for graphics (40 with OCing), how did the 5650 do??

Edit, An intersting test would be to run that cpu test with the IGP and then with the GPU to see if using the IGP inhibits any performance on the CPU since it is using some of it's power....

    Battery update!

I started with 100% full battery, screen brightness at 100%, integrated graphics, bluetooth off, wireless on.

I just did some internet surfing and downloading/installing some programs.

I ended up with exactly 4 hours and 20 minutes.

    (520m, 160gb SSD, 1 dimm 4gb, for reference)

    Fastest unboxing ever imo.

For cinebench, doesn't the R11.5 gives you a 6xxx ish cpu score only like the ones that are on notebookcheck cpu comparison list (multi threaded) ? If not maybe you need to run Cinebench R10 rather than the new one. http://downloads.guru3d.com/CineBench-10-download-1708.html

I am looking at pictures of the internals of the e14, and the DVD appears to be using a proprietary connector, not sata. Its a blue ribbon cable with a white connector tip that plugs in between the fan and connector for the slice near the marking CN5004.

of course that's where the hdd is. The GPU is more on the back right next to the right vent, but it doesn't come through the keyboard all that much I don't think

Has anyone tried replacing the existing hard drive with a new SSD? For some reason when I boot up using the Win7 DVD, it looks like it is working and then the screen just goes black and never comes back. This is super frustrating. I have been following the instructions from page one links exactly without success... :-(. I would appreciate any suggestions.

    thanks!

have you tried disabled hp quickstart in the bios?

that might be mucking things up

you can get to the bios by hitting esc (gives you a selection) or f10 as the computer boots

also the palm rest DOES get warm while doing this.

but it's the right size only and well...it's up to you to decide if it's uncomfortably warm.

I mean it isn't hot. But it is above room temperature

I checked specifics guys, sorry I linked you the newer version of cinebench, actually the R10 is way better to gauge cpus because it uses a bigger point scale.
So if you guys arn't tired of benching try running a cinebench R10 multicore cpu only test to see more accurately how 450m and 520m are performing.

and it also may just be the hdd head moving or something.

You're spot on with some of your points. I agree with you on the screen but fault for the CPU whine goes to Intel. That aside, HP raised our expectations for a PC notebook of all things. I was personally keeping my expectations low as I knew I was gunning for specs and good build quality.

Now overall craftsmanship overall seems to earn a score of 8.5/10. It loses points for substituting glass for plastic. Battery life could be better as I'm sure HP with a little more investment could've invested in software for touchpad gestures and battery life as both were created by companies other than HP.

On the bright side, if the opinions shown so far are anything to go off of, HP has improved drastically. But I'm expecting better things.

well just opened and started it up. first impressions...

build quality is excellent no visible dents or scratches despite the fedex delivery guy DROPPING the box right before he got to my door LOL

touch pad will certainly take some time getting use to. the clickers are a bit more stubborn than i am use to.

keyboard feels nice but there is flex especially around O-P. but it doesnt bother me at all.

the bottom is even, doesnt rock side to side at all.

the hp logo lights up all the way.

also, this laptop is VERY wide. almost as wide as my 17+inch laptop. go figure.

it looks and feels very nice actually.

its tough to stick items in the USB port. idk if that is a good or bad thing.

Been following this forum for a while now and just received my Envy 14 in the mail today so here is my first post. I wanted to post my initial impression of the new computer. I purchased a separate SSD drive since I didn't trust what HP would put in there. I ended up just getting a Corsair p128, I have used a few different brands of SSD and this drive seems to work well.

The box and packaging are top notch. My wife said that the laptop looks girly due to the engraving, I somewhat agree. By far my biggest issue is with the keyboard and the touchpad. I am used to business LT's and currently have a Lenovo t410s, which has a fantastic keyboard. I may just need to get used to the island type keys. There is much more flex in this keyboard then on my Lenovo or my other Dell e6500. Weight seems acceptable and build quality otherwise is good. I have the i5-520m and don't hear any whining noises which is good. Fan is a bit loud but not too bad. Screen is nice, reflection is annoying though. After I get Win 7 reloaded on my SSD I will post more impressions. I really wish Lenovo had a better discrete graphics option since the thinkpads are a great computer.

I wonder if this would be true with SSD users? The only spot that's gotten even warm in my use is the top right, but that's where one of the exhausts is.

I'll get more detailed results when I have SC2 in my hands and I can do some real world stress testing.

you MAY have to do a factory default setup on the SSD.

and then clean install win 7 through..well..windows 7 initially.

I already posted about a similar problem. Start the installation process from your pre-loaded copy of Windows 7. The HP QuickPlay app probably is messing with the MBR. Starting the install from Windows fixed the problem for me. You could also try nuking your MBR.

edit to clarify: That is, boot into windows, insert your CD/USB key, auto-run to start the installation process and let it do its thing. I had the same problem as you are having now: It would boot up, load files from the CD, show the little Windows 7 animation and then hang at a black screen.

That's the beauty of buying a product from a company that actually wants your business and will fight for it. Toyota products for a very good reason have plummeted in Consumer Reports rankings while Ford has reached the top. I never thought I'd live to say this, but damn...that 2011 Ford Mustang looks sexy.

    Apparently there's two solutions :

    Tom's Hardware Forums [...] g-notebook

Or yea you could just boot on seven cd and use the repair tool and eventually the MBR repair commands if windows doesn't fix it itself.

Ok maybe you did say there is an option to set deadzones, I do recall someone saying that. But Ive also read a number of ppl saying that they cant find any option to set deadzones in the synaptics utility. Maybe the drivers that come with the e14 dont have this feature and you need to update the drivers?
