If anyone would actually read the tutorials and use the 'sample' test screens they would also know that this has already been completely done by Synaptics, with a link right on the device setting page -- Synaptics

    I just got my Envy 14 ...

Am I supposed to keep it plugged in until the white light stops FLASHING and then turn it on? The manual says to keep it plugged in until the white light turns on ... but once I plugged it in the white light already came up.

Has anyone purchased the slice via the parts store? They confirmed its the right one for 150.00 and they offered me 10% off so I may just buy it through there.

    Hello all,

Just registered. Thanks to everyone in this thread for their advice and insights so far and to 2.0 for keeping house.

I just got my Envuy 14. The screen is amazing. The touchpad is awful but I'm sure I'll be able to tweak it to be fine.

My question is on build quality - my Envy has a slim gap on the left side where the top panel meets the body. The right side is flush. Also, the right hinge is not exactly centered, while the left hinge is.

These seem like cosmetic issues, but still annoying on a $1000+ laptop. I'm trying to decide if it would be worth exchanging for such minor issues. Has anyone else got similar body issues?

I am using a windows 7 ultimate from my technet account.

I had Zero problems with fresh reload using a Corsair p128 drive. Only issue was finding drivers. Make sure to backup or copy the sw folder.

Common issue. Leave disk in drive, hold power button until it powers off and restart after a few minutes. You can also try making the dvd drive first boot device.

Hope that is the case. I can't rest my thumb even slightly on the button area of my new dv6tse without screwing up the cursor movement.

I don't seem to have any of those issues, but if I did I would seriously consider sending it back to them seeing as how I'm hoping to use this laptop for the next 3-4 years.

My 9800M GS, which has a higher TDP, runs rather cool in SC2 in spite of my room's swamplike climate. Here's to hoping the 5650 runs even cooler!

if anyone is interested the laptop does fit in the sleeve with the slice battery attached. it is quite snug though.

the slice battery does make it pretty heavy.

Actually each core runs at 2.4Ghz and both threads in each core also runs at 2.4Ghz. That's why if you open task manager you see what looks like 4 cores, which are actually the 4 threads (all at 2.4Ghz) when max turbo boost kicks in it is only on 1 of the threads to 2.93Ghz. If you get a 100% load on all 4 threads then you will get a maximum Speed of 2.66Ghz on all 4 threads, the 540M is 4 threads at 2.53Ghz, 100% load on all 4 threads at 2.8Ghz each and maximum on a single thread of 3.06Ghz...

Well I just got my laptop in today.
For a laptop thats supposed to be the top of the line from hp, the build quality for mine kind of sucks.

The top right corner of the keyboard is coming out farther then the rest.
When i press the P button it flexes so much it actually makes a sound when coming back up.

At the dead center of the bottom of the laptop the material which covers the bottom isnt flush with the edged metal on the rest. So for about 2 inches there is a gap there, small but easily noticible.

On the bottom left side above the audio jacks there is a mark on the material that looks like someone took a file to it. Same thing above one of the usb port. Its about 1.5 cm's wide and is on the thin part of the bottom material. Easily seen if put into the light since everywhere else it reflects silver but in these spots its dark grey.

Wait now that I look it, I also have that at the bottom right above the esata port.

If you guys want I can take some pictures but this is kind of rediculous. I used to complain about the asus ul30 about problems like these and returned a couple of them, now im getting them in a 1200 laptop?

As for the rest of the laptop, the screen is nice but im not huge on photo editing or anything like that so its not that important to me.

The keyboard feels alright besides the P and buttons around it.

The trackbad is fine but I can't stand scrolling with it, the asus ul30 imo had a better two touch scrolling detection. This one half the time doesnt respond its like i have to be moving perfectly parrallel.

So many people are complaining about their envy's cosmetic issues. Is a laptop suppose to perfect? We should be talking about pros and cons, but getting worked over minor cons isn't worth complaining about. Jeez.

so far my laptop was perfect out of the box minus the touchpad.

five minutes in the settings, one new driver and the touchpad is perfect too.

Some of the phsyical damages actually sound pretty sucky. I'm OK with mayb a tiny scratch (not on the screen). but dents and "file marks" would me off. I mean you don't see apples products like that.

In fact apple tosses anything that is blemished. Then some ebay companies get their hands on apple's "trash" and sell it for dirt dirt cheap. (iPod chargers shipped for like $2.80... basicly free?)

Ona side note, mine is beautiful! I will inspect it more after recovery disks are done, but so far no quirks at all. Windows 7 reinstall later tonight / tomorrow. (gotta download a disk image of home premium)

But I have (what seems to me) a tremendous amount of keyboard flex around the W, A, and S keys. Kinda worries me. I'll take a video of it later for you all to see.

This is more like a moderate push. It moves with normal typing pressure. It doesn't really affect typing, but it looks bad. I'll probably have a vid in a few hours, soon as I get some batteries for my camera.

I'm actually not home right now but I'll take a couple of pictures later and post them up. For someone that is not picky and doesn't notice little imperfections it probably won't be that big of a deal. However when you pay 300 -400 dollers more then a acer with the same specs besides the worse screen but much better battery life. Your hoping the quality would be the main reason to keep it. Not sure if I want to get it replaced or get a timelinex or wait for Asus n82jv. Kind of sucks since I already bought a 4gb stick of ram and a momentus xt for it.

    Quick question
I notice that my Envy14 has a strange problem and I want to know if anyone is having the same issue. When you shutdown the laptop, does the envy power back on by itself or powers on when you unplug or plug the power. It sort of seem to me my envy power back on when i touch it. I took out the battery and plugged it back in and the laptop powered back up. I was unplugging the AC adapter it powered back up. I plugged in my usb HD and it powered back on. Is that happening to anyone else?

Am I the only one who got a defective one?
So basically, I had to order ANOTHER ONE, and use the defective one until it arrives. And then I return it for a full refund.
Damn. This truly sucks. Thanks HP -_-

P.S. PM me please if you have the same "wiggling" problem like I do. And if your HP logo's lights are misplaced.

    no wiggle.

keyboard flexes with moderate/heavy pressure (this is beyond regular typing pressure)

Nope, the only flex I have is on the right side of the keyboard near the aforementioned keys. At first it really annoyed me, but it's the only imperfection I've discovered so I can live with it. Plus I don't really notice it while I'm typing which is the important thing.

I started a thread about my "g" key wiggling but have gotten no responses. I was wondering if anyone in here knows if there is a guide to removing and replacing a key on these chiclet style keyboards? Maybe a Macbook keyboard repair guide? On my old Dell, it was easy to to pop a key off and reattach it but these island style boards are a little different.
