ok, i am an official Envy 14 owner, i placed the order a little while ago.

    now, from this point on:

the laptop comes with a corel suite of software. doing a clean install of w7 would remove this suite (unless of course, they include actual discs for the suite). the alternative to getting rid of the bloatware would be to just uninstall one by one. i also have an advanced registry optimizer (jv16 powertools) which i can use to clean up the junk left behind. would this be good enough ?

i hate dirty installations of windows, but this would have to do. my other alternative would be to save windows activation info, blow away the installation, then start fresh.
what's the best guide on how-to for this ?

i also use clonezilla to create backup images of my partitions, so i could always backup the partitions when i get the laptop before i decide to mess around with them ...

everything installed on the computer is in the SWSetup folder on the c drive.

    this includes the corel stuff

edit: this does NOT include the norton trial.

edit edit: Also hp quickweb has a hidden folder in swsetup.

hope people don't miss that one

So, I was going to exchange due to build quality issues (gaps along the top edges) but now I'm thinking of doing a straight return.

    My issues are:

Loud fans - I disabled "fan always on" in bios but the fan is still always on. Has anyone found a fix? The fans, to my ear, are much too loud to be on constantly.

Touchpad issues - I rest my fingers on the buttons while I use the touchpad. I've tried everything in the Synaptics settings to set a "dead zone" but anything I do in the button areas still registers. Any successful fixes for this??

Why did you go with the i7 720QM? I thought the new 17 740/840 were supposed to have greatly reduced idle power draws. Both the 720 ans 820 idle (at 0% usage) drawing 15.05 W. Surprised you got 2 hours with the amount of stuff you were doing during the test, 30W per hour sounds about right when your getting all those cores active and the rest of the system is doing it's thing...

Clean install. Use the Out of the Box tuto. Only thing that I missed from doing a clean install on my dv2610 was QuickLaunch buttons, which are just a luxury to have. Other than that, clean install after reformat is always good.

Also quick question to the experts. In a 2010 lappy, what's the format of the HDD? Is it still NTFS? Or something more hitech?

It's the folder with all your drivers, and hp things that were installed to your computer in the factory.

So. all that mediasmart stuff but also corel and the quick launch UI (that pulls you out of a game if you mess with audio. HP!!!!)

hp quickweb is like a little linux OS that runs if you want to enable it.

boots up in 10-15 seconds and has access to a modified firefox browser (no control on your part of it) and e-mail and a couple other things.

you can also continue on into win 7 proper from hp quick web

i think win7 uses NTFS. still the same FS.

so are you saying hp includes docs/info on how to do a clean install on the machine ? i didn't think they would do that because they have agreements with vendors/etc. so laptop cost to customer goes down ...

    HP doesn't.

this forum does. there's a HP win 7 out of the box 2.0 guide back on the main hp forum on NBR

it runs you through clean installing and stuff and making sure you make the recovery discs (one chance only to do that) etc

my question was whether that folder contains the expanded, already installed software, or is it the location of all the files and setups that are needed to install them in win7 ?

example: the folder contains the software discs/media, or it's the location where the software was installed in win7.

Actually 3 fingers should not move the cursor at all unless you 'flick' them....

All I can say is give it a week or so and you'll adapt and get used to not resting you digits where they will cause the cursor to jump around....

Is there a way to have the touchpad automatically disabled when a usb mouse is attached? I have a synaptics touchpad on my current laptop and it's a great feature. I don't use the touchpad much, but on the occasion that I do, I just unplug my mouse and the touchpad is automatically activated.

I called HP support with my fan problem and told them about my fans spinning on idle all the time. They asked me if I am doing anything and I told them I'm using the internet. She told me that the fans are spinning because I am using the internet and there is nothing I can do about it. LOL
BTW I disabled fan always on in bios.
    I am done with HP

    yeah.

on the synaptics tab of mouse properties, but not in the settings, there's a little check box below those three buttons (enable, disable, settings) that says "turn off internal pointing device when external usb pointing device is attached"

    click that

You can disable the device or you can use the upper left corner and double tap to disable the pad. You can go into the driver and do it per session or always. Not sure if you use a mouse it will automagically do it for you.

thanks fellas for the answers ...
that auto disable touchpad feature in synaptics, does it recognize wireless usb mice ?
my wifes dv6 has a dedicated enable/disable button, which i happen to like.
too bad it was nixed for the envy lineup.
other thing i like about the 14 is the drive is on the left instead of the right where my mouse usually hangs out ....

i think i saw something like 4 hrs in the first post. but no specs listed. i would guesstimate its on an i5 platform. i would buy the slice, but not for 200 .... ill wait for it to drop a bit. 8-9 hrs runtime would be expected with that battery added .... which blows mbp's out of the water, with windows platform thats major

Wanted quad core and didn't think the pricing for minimal performance gain was justifiable. Haven't seen detailed comparisons of power draw and the below show them pretty much the same except for release dates and of course core clock speeds.
