Try Lenovo G460. the quality is not bad...it is quite sturdy. but screen is 1366x768

Thanks for the help, I plan to take that out of my configuration and get Microsoft Office instead.

abaddon4180 Notebook Virtuoso
Also relatively weak. If you were gonna go that weak I would recommend a U30xJC instead. -
Sorry, I meant LEnovo Y460 -
Some people seem pretty happy with their Acer 3820 and 4820s, too.
-
You spelled Audio wrong....
hehe....
-
Yeah could you also redo the CPU related tests?
Just to see if they're higher than your initial test as well. -
So I did a clean W7 install following the instructions in the HP Out-of-the-Box thread, but a few things aren't working the way they did before I did the fresh install.
When I turn off WiFi or mute the laptop, the LED's in the F9 and F10 keys don't change state even though the WiFi function key does in fact enable/disable WiFi (it stays blue even when WiFi is disabled). The mute button doesn't light at all.
Anyone else have this problem? I installed everything in the swsetup/drivers folder as well as most of the stuff in the Envy 14 drivers thread linked in the first post of this thread, but nothing has got those buttons functioning properly. I'm out of ideas. -
What are the wattages? that is how much power the psu can supply. If the xps is higher that will not be a limiting factor. However, there are 3 other factors: polarity, voltage, and current that need to match.

It seems that installing windows through bootup does not work as the screen goes blank. Anyone know how to delete partitions when doing a new install inside windows?
-
Thought I'd post this from the gaming forum for updating the GPU drivers:
Not sure if this will work to keep the discrete set, but a step in the right direction. -
can you please put large images in spoiler tags?
-
Betcha didn't know there's was an AUDI in your Envy 14, huh?
True story. But only the DPC latency checker can manifest it.
Prolly accounts for some of the dodgy QC issues this unit has been having. -
No significant changes with the CPU scores, so I'll leave them as is. I updated the OpenGL ones, looks like we got our answers. Thanks guys
-
No, not spoiler tags.
The all new image tag! *cue celebratory music and such.

sure, but sometimes you want to read the text which is hard on small images. wide images are just annoying because they make all the other posts wide as well and horizontal scrolling is dumb.
-
And so you click the pic to enlarge. Aww, c'mon, you gotta love that. Oh, and then hit back button to return to the post.
-
yes, i was wrong. didnt know they were clickable. i will never doubt you again 2.0
I assume if someone creates account 2.1 or greater they will be banned? -
I'm nervous about my envy that is coming next week. Is the build quality really as bad as people are making it out to be, or are there some pretty tough people to please on here? I'm on my gf's pavilion dv6 right now, and there is not any keyboard flex. It has the i330m and runs well. The only thing that I dislike is the low res screen, but it's quiet and doesn't really put out much heat. I just really hope I get a good envy...
-
Sorry if this has been asked before but does anyone have heat issues with the i7 720? Mine is coming monday and I'm very excited so I hope it doesn't have any issues

They will be terminated with extreme prejudice.
-
So Windows 3.1 never happened...
-
Polls say (see link on page 1 of thread) that you stand a ~55% chance of getting a good one, a ~25% of minor issues and only a ~15% chance of a lemon that will need to be returned.
-
What's that then?
nudge nudge.
-
That leaves 5% that it will make your coffee and rub your back.
-
I'm willing to take those odds.
Really though, hopefully in a couple weeks I can order. I was hoping to have ordered by now, but $1200 is a lot to drop at once, so I'm still getting the cash together. -
Heck, if it'll make your coffee and rub your back, it's a lot cheaper than a GF or even worse yet, a wife...
(... runs away... evil women with pitchforks ensuing ...) -
I know this is a bit off topic, but while waiting for my Envy 14 to come in I just bought the Synology DS210j NAS with a 2 TB drive so that I will have something to archive to. This thing is very nice, offers a variety of full featured services. If you're in the market for a NAS, check it out.
Before, everyone asks, no it has no flex, unless maybe you try to stomp it with your boot
-
Link and price?
I built a Windows Home Server for < $300 + accumulated 5 x 1TB drives over time and its a nice little setup. Auto system backups, backup data manually, run server services on it (i.e. TeamSpeak, Hamachi, etc), stream media to xbox or PS3. Just another option... -
Yeah, no. Actually, we receive those units and hand them out to staff, mods and their family and friends. But as luck would have it, I got one of the 5% of the 5%.
Oh well. Better luck with Envy 14 Gen 2. I... I suppose.
Goodnight then.
2.0 goes off to cry in a pint of stout. Lamenting his misfortune. His dirty bad luck. His awful lot in life. A terrific pity party this will be. -
From all the envy 15 owners who have i7 X20QM CPU's. They all show a minimum idle power draw of 15.04 Watts, doesn't matter if you disable even 3 of the 4 cores, the power draw is the same 15.04, and the E 15 throttles the i7 on battery to an 7X multiplier (931Mhz). Same issue with i5's, but 5.24W min. at lidle (1 or 2 cores active) and these get throttled to an 9X multiplier on battery (1.2Ghz). The most accurate thing for reading this seems to be Everest but it's also proven with all sorts of battery life tests from notebookcheck, anandtech and other reviews. The best life for the E 15 with an i7 X20QM is ~2:30 on the 53 Wh battery (except for 1 person who claims 5hrs which you can't even get with an 15). Intel was very firmly mute on the issue when all the complaints flooded in on the initial i7 series release.
It was rumored that the newly released i7 X40QM's would have this idle power draw reduced significantly but I can't recall where I read that. IIRC Someone with an 840QM already posted initial battery numbers that I think were in the high 3hrs range, but I give up trying to search for it in this thread with to crappy search engine. -

I saw that 3 hours and 21 minutes hiding in the board somewhere too jjb
but yeah I don't think that guy's come back -
Nice, definitely a nice option for someone opting for a 160GB SSD and need more space for backing up files. Make it quick and painless for the most part since it's networked, not to mention periodic backups.

Whew, waaaay too expensive for me.
My router ASUS RT-N16 cost me $90, has two USB ports for sharing printers or hard drives, gigabit LAN, and Wireless N. I use DD-WRT on it, and I haven't actually tested to see if DD-WRT supports sharing devices via the USB ports (I assume it does).
Still, I feel like it'd be easier to buy a router like this and get an external HDD and share that way. Sure, it's not as fast, as it's over USB 2.0, but it's less expensive, and very multifunctional.
I know many people want a dedicated NAS though-- I would get one if I had the money. Even easier would be for me to get an old PC and hook up some drives to it, and run it on the network.
Edit: I did some research and a quick test, and DD-WRT definitely supports it. However, to make it as seamless as a NAS, it would require some work (setting up a samba server on the router itself), which obviously isn't for everyone. A NAS is much more pain-free, so I understand why it is an appealing option to most. -
That's kinda a high rate. I mean I'm happy with my own luck, but for HP they need to do better to "fight" the MBP. Anything 40% rate of issues (minor / magor combined) must be twice what the MBP's get?? Sure HP lets you return it no questions asked, but that doesn't make people feel better/ still wastes their time.
In it's 100% state this thing is really close to being a 100% MBP equal. It would really only need a few tweaks and some QC to make it full on equal. Value wise? Still way better deal. Reminds me I need to call and ask for $25 cpu price match and $25 cash instead of coupon.
EDIT: wifi issues fixed with driver update. Add this to FAQ page 1 if you havnt! -
oh man i should have it in my hands in the next 20 minutes, i cant wait
outside of the wifi driver, are there any other fixes i need to make? i'm doing a clean install on a ssd i bought so want to make sure i get the right files on it, outside of the sw-setup folder -
That's the thing. If you have an older PC, buy a copy of WHS = Windows Home Server ($89-$99) or free if you have TechNet, buy a couple 1TB drives, and you can add drives later to expand storage. One note though, make sure the drive that you install WHS on is fairly large, 1TB should be fine, because you can't swap out that drive without reinstalling WHS and it relies on that as somewhat of a cache for your files.

Yeah, I agree and I thought about that. I can say that for me it's worth it. One thing to consider is that devices like these are more power efficient than having a PC on. This may not matter so much if you have a WOL setup, but I put WD Green drive in and with it's other power savings features I think its cost will be offset within a couple of years. One of these days I'll have to get a Kill-A-Watt and find out much juice it really draws.

whats this about a wifi driver? could this be the solution to my internet randomly disconnecting

HELP I SCREWD UP!
I used 2.0's "legal" download of Windows7 and installed Ultimate on my E14.
It says it's not genuine beucase my key was expired or something and now i cant connect to the internet. please help -
Seriously, one can't follow this thread if they ever leave the house lol
frickin nuts -
I have the same issues with the fan. I've tried both BIOS settings for the fan, and I find the noise too distracting on both settings. I'm hoping a BIOS update will fix this...but I may end up returning because of the fan noise. It's that bad.
Everything else on laptop is amazing. -

Never ever EVER try to install the 10.6 drivers while you've disabled the IGP in the device manager (and you know after you rebooted to make that take affect).
you'll thank me later when your envy doesn't decide to get a partial black screen instead of the regular full one (when installing 10.6 drivers normally), boots back up, and then rapidly swaps between IGP and Radeon.
back and forth five times until they just give up and kill the screen.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
did your envy come with Ultimate? Your key only works for the same version that came installed.
