I guess that's fine for now. I believe someone a while back said he'd make a macro for it? Forgot his name, he's the dude with the grungy cartoon avatar.

Anyone reply to my questino about Butr0sButr0s's picture of his E14? What is that yellow/sap/glue/goop thing at the edge of his laptop where the touchpad is? What's up with 2010 HP's QC?!?!? Also, what exactly is it that's located there, which causes the bulge in alotta these photos I've been seeing? Or is it the camera which makes the shape of the laptop look roundish?

Go through all the directories in the SWSetup folder and run the setup files for stuff.

most of the bloatware has a prompt for repair or removing when you run the setup. So...well...yeah go from there.

As a shortlist: Mediasmart, kill it. Media Smart SmartMenu is the OSD for everything but the touchpad and the wireless.

HP wireless assisant is the OSD for the wireless

I dunno what the hell is the OSD for the touchpad. probably just the touchpad drivers.

MyColors and Stardock stuff. Get rid of that unless you like the fences or something.

not sure what hpquicklaunch (HPQL) is, but the fn+button things still work even after I uninstalled it. so. *shrugs*

HPQuickWeb you can just disable (probably less of a hassle just disabling it than uninstalling it should you want to use it again sometime later).

...not really sure what the other stuff is but HP ToneControl is probably an add on to the IDT stuff and beats stuff that lets you control bass and treble. don't uninstall that.

    there's a bulge.

    most bulges aren't that big.

the bluetooth radio is there. it's that white thing you see if you look dead on at the thing.

orange goop I dunno what that is. not on mine

My envy hasn't arrived yet, but when it does, I plan to do a clean install
I'm backign up my media and burning the iso to a dvd now, I'm just wondering if I should start downloading the drivers now as well, in case some internet driver gets messed up?

That was really confusing. I'm sorry. I'm a total noob at this.
I tried burning SWSETUP to a DVD, but it said SWSETUP was too big to burn? :S I'm so confused.

My personal song to test out audio equipment is "Gifts from enola - Trieste" in flac, (this is basically the most intense hardcore post rock song I ever found, the riffs and bass line are unbelievable, that song is simply awful and sounds like noise when played on low quality stuff but it becomes exquisite with audiophile equipment).
Also if you have noise on your jack try lowering windows's main volume and increasing your player's volume & laptop volume (the one you change with volume keys), its a cheap trick but it clears the noise on 99% of laptops.
That's my two cents about music.

just backup the 4.37 to 4.7 GB SWSetup folder.

it has everything that's installed on your envy at the factory. so all the drivers and programs and the free corel and the norton trial and stuff.

some of the stuff there is nice and important to reinstall (tone control)

others...well...you can pass but I mean I dunno what half of it is since it's a little cryptic still

Well you'll have to burn it to two dvds.

I mean burn part or most of it to the first. Burn the rest to the second (drag the folders) if you're gonna copy your SWSetup directory next time

when I tried to burn, it said swsetup file was something PB.
That's more than a TB :S which makes no sense

Should I delete any folders in swsetup?

Yah, pretty sloppy QC. Know if its removable with an exacto knife/rubbing alcohol/fingernail? I don't mind it, but very surprised with the poor QC. Maybe it happened when HP merged with Compaq? (reference Activision + Blizzard = crap corporate merger)

    hmmm...

sw setup is 4.81 GB (size on disk) or 4.79GB (size)

I never knew which meant which when copy and pasting and burning.

just grab stuff up and until my colors and put it on one disc.

put the rest on the other disc. that's if you're gonna try to clean install again.

Anyone seen one of the new Sony Y series? Supposed to be pretty good build quality with ULV i5 and a radeon 4550 on the cheap.
If my envy 14 is "retarded" tomorrow, I'm getting one.

ok dudes some musicians aren't totally helpless, some are self-producing or doing some engineering of their own, especially if they just do music as a hobby at home and aren't paying for studio time they have to learn it all. They would know how to install cubase/sonar/etc and an asio driver all by themself dude, its essential to have a low latency asio driver if you are trying to record and monitor in realtime, i was not asking for such a high tech thing dude we don't need to fetch the high paid high tech producers and engineers to do spectral analysis or anything, all I asked about was ASIO and latency, like yeah totally rad dude ok? :)

Ok, first of all installing through dvd bootup does not work.

Therefore, the way I did it was do a clean install through windows.

Make sure you make the recovery disks through Recovery Media Creation and back up the Swsetup folder in Local disk C.

First you need a windows 7 install iso file. If you dont have one, you can get it from here for free ( theyre legal):
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/win...-7-download-links-just-like-vista-before.html

Follow the instructions on how to make one that would let you install any edition of windows 7.

Use this program to back up your windows activation, without the hassle of activating windows while installing it.
    http://directedge.us/files/abr/ABRbeta.exe

Then install it normally through windows. When it asks you which partition to install it on, choose local disk C.

After installation there will be two Windows folders. Delete Windows.old folder.

    Then thats it.

Edit: Oh yea, put the ABR files and your backup activation files from running the ABR application in a flash drive, so you could restore the windows activation after installation.

My speaker works fine, as do my full sized headphones. Just my 2 IEMs. Grrrr. I'm going borrow someone else's headphones and test. Maybe my IE7 are too sensitive at 16 Ohm and 125dB/mW

    Grrr

Yea well that is a high impedance phone. Do you have any IEMs to test with?

MagusDraco was using portable like headphones and have no hiss but its also 25db/MW less than the IE7. I might think its just my IEMs being too sensitive.

Thanks for that. But those tweaks were mainly for upping the built in speaker volume on the E 15. I'm glad it works on the E 14 also but there are most likely specific tweaks that will better optimize the E 14 speakers and headphone out jacks better than my original posting. So I hearby authorize anyone to cut, paste, add, delete or change my 'tweaks' specifically for the Envy 14 and repost it for adding to the 1st page.

I can't fine tune it myself because I have no E 14 (yet?)..........

The Y cant be classified to be e14 rival, its not premium and it doesn't seems to be that cheap either. it will cost you about 900 I think. Performance, material, hardware, etc...it doesn't even close to e14 level.

    I'm just wondering about this:

Since the laptop is accessible from the bottom (unlike most laptops that make you disassemble the whole laptop to get the the cpu and such) does that mean that everything is upside down (ie usb ports, sata, HDMI)? The mobo is upside down compared to most laptops, meaning that all components are always upside down. I know that the ethernet input is upside down, but is everything else?

    Alright thats good to know.

I am just wondering how well the components will hold. I know it is probably almost 100% fine, but since the mobo is upside down, all components are "hanging" instead of resting on the mobo.

I know its probably nothing, but ever since I learned that this laptop is fully accessible from the bottom, I was always wondering how things will hold up always suspended from screws instead of sitting with the full weight of the component on the mobo.
