    10-15 minutes? It's really easy if you have a gentle touch. You've gotta deal with some ZIF connectors and there are a few tabs on the ODD mounting points that can probably easily break, but it should be easy if you take your time and especially if you've got the service manual PDF.

    Well, for that person, they would probably leave a comment in the thread if the choices don't precisely fit their reason.

    In any event, you can start a poll thread with the choices you came up with. You probably will get folks talking about build quality and voting along the lines of how satisfied they are with the build quality. That's because pretty much everything that is unique about the Envy comes down to build quality of each component.

    Then you may get people voting because they are dissatisfied with the amount of bloatware. Or that they don't like the actual color of the notebook as it differs slightly from pics. Or that they were dissatisfied with HP customer service.

    Just sayin'.

    If you start it and it gets traction, I'll link it to the 1st post.

    I hear you, probably not worth the effort and results will be just as skewed. Just thought there might be a useful poll that captures more than just "build quality".

    This laptop had a lot of promise because of the balance, guess we'll find out in due time if it met most expectations.

    So I guess they won't allow exchanges? You must return and reorder?

    If so, that blows for people who bought an E14 with BCB and receive an E14 with blemishes and what not.

    Can you tell what is the model name of the optical drive? Is it 12.7mm or 9.5mm?

    Edit: Never mind

    well, i had to do some convincing to talk to the manager because the service rep, and then the supervisor wouldn't budge, and they both insisted that the manager would tell me the same thing. but i got him to note out that i will also be receiving the credit i got on top of the student discount.

    basically i told the manager what was wrong with my laptop, and then i explained to him how long ive been waiting for it, and that i paid premium for this laptop, and its not my fault it came defective, and that it was HP that screwed up. and he then agreed to allow me to purchase another one for the same price and credit, which i will be calling in to do so later today.

    EDIT: i forgot to answer your question lol...the rep and supervisor were trying to get me to do an exchange...but i need a laptop to use, since i have summer school starting in a week, and i cannot wait 3 weeks for this to come in.

    Pissing match aside, does the E14 support all the same gestures? Two-finger tap for right-click, great, but what about the rest of them (save for inertial scrolling)?

    I was wondering if anyone has been having issues muting their HP envy 14 then putting the computer into sleep mode...then starting the computer out of sleep and not being able to un-mute the computer. I have noticed this twice now and the only way to fix the issue is by shutting down the computer and rebooting.

    Also, is anyone having issues with their optic disk drive making load noises and almost a rattling sound when a disk is inserted. I noticed this once with one of my disks.

    Just in general:

    As far as the web cam. I have used it quite a bit already and I feel that using it with skype or g-chat it works really well. Very good picture quality IMO and the sounds that is picked up by my voice is excellent.

    That video is Modern Warfare 2, which the Envy can probably run on high. And yes, windows was set on max. The only thing that could be slowing it down is that its a cracked version of the game, so it might not be optimized as well.

    Yea, but modern warfare of bbc2 is the same for settings ( YouTube - Battlefield: Bad Company 2 on Ati Radeon HD 5650 gameplay: Upriver_Part 1/2) 5650 @ 1336 also runs smooth bbc2 with everything on high except shadows.

    So just to clarify, they do allow for exchanges, ie you send in the defective one, they build another with the same exact specifications and send that to you. (And presumably, you don't need to bust out your credit card again.)

    I have spent the past 3 days using my Envy 14 for work and gamming with the following comments.

    1. I suppose the HP designers are left-handed since the power cord attachment is constantly in the way of my external mouse operations... :) I would have preferred it on the left side or an elbow on the connector would work as well. Does anyone know of an adapter for this?

    2. When gaming, there is quite a bit of hot air blowing out of the right vent onto your mouse hand. Gets uncomfortable for me in a matter of minutes. I wish they would have jetted the exhaust out the rear instead. Unfortunately, there is no real fix for this since I have to work using a lapdesk.

    3. My keyboard gets very hot to the right of the power switch while gaming. It doesn't really bother me as long as it doesn't affect the longevity of the screen.

    4. The screen is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!! Unfortunately, I have a bad pixel in the center that becomes noticeable when the screen is dark.

    5. DEFINITELY go with the SSD. The system runs a lot faster overall. I ordered mine with the 320GB hard drive and changed to an SSD myself and a fresh install of W7.

    6. The processor whine is not very noticeable or bothersome. The fans are always quiet when utilizing the integrated graphics. They kick on as soon as I change to the discrete graphics. Not unpleasant sounding though... :)

    7. The size is perfect, however, the weight is a bit heavy as compared to other 15" laptops.

    8. The keyboard does flex a bit more than my other laptop with the chicklet style keyboard. However, it is not a big issue. Just don't bang on your keys and all is well... :D

    9. I love this laptop and feel that the minor issues are outweighed by the quality of the screen and overall performance/value.

    10. Buy one.

    the dm4 manual says white is connected to power and fully charged, amber connected to power and charging, blinking white on battery and is either in low or critical battery state. probably the same for the envy

    (EDIT)
    Envy 14 Manual:
    off: battery power
    blinking amber: low battery, critical battery, or battery error
    amber: charging
    white: charged

    Need help with this issue because I'm trying to decide if I should return my Envy 14.

    Whenever I adjust the lid, i.e. backwards or forwards for the best viewing angles, there is an area about the size of a quarter in the center of the screen where the lcd ripples. Any recommendations or similar issues?

    Thanks!

    I am a bit confused with the first page links and what others have said through out the thread. I have my own win 7 ultimate and my own key to install a clean copy on my envy 14. Can I just save that software folder and boot from disc and install my windows?

    Where are you getting this? Optimizations and translates to 15% fps loss? 70% more pixels could kill even a high end card, depending on available bus width, being only 128bit on the 5650 a higher resolution will definitely struggle. Only way to fairly compare is run at the same resolution. There's no reason the 3820TG should run any faster than the Envy 14 with same specs.

    I typically don't run AA at native resolution, but in this case the FPS change seemed negligible with 2xMSAA (not FSAA).

    I can't even run everything at high with shadows on medium on my GTX 260m without questionable frame rates periodically, so I wouldn't expect the HD 5650 to be able to handle it.

    Just got my envy, hooray! She is certainly beautiful. How long does it take to charge up the first time so I can use this thing? I'm dying to use it (and dreading the possibility that I will soon hear a loud whine lol). Build quality seems fantastic though, don't notice any issues and the keyboard flex I would never have noticed and it's not bad at all :D

    Embarassing question here, but how do I get rid of this freaking popup? I've tried clicking on it, left and right clicking, and opening action center. It doesn't want to move.

    edit-excuse the large picture. It didn't occur to me until after I uploaded it that I could have made the paint image smaller to crop out the message.

    Open up the Action center or whatever and uncheck a box that says Do not remind me or I don't need to back up.

    I got rid of it by doing something like that. It's possible! :p

    Yep -- haven't used Win 7 for awhile, but that should do it.

    Can we get a final word on the whole trackpad / gesture thing? On the MBP side, there's:

    - Two-finger tap/click to right-click;
    - Two-finger scrolling, horizontally and vertically;
    - Three-finger swiping horizontally to move back/forward in browsers, etc.;
    - Four-finger swiping to show desktop;
    - ...

    Two-finger scrolling apparently works, but what about the rest?
