about the HP_Tools partition: i deleted mine as well while doing a clean install. however, on my new installation there is a 100mb System Reserved partition that was automatically created when i installed windows 7. i'm not sure what it contains though. you can see that it exists under Disk Management. i can't see the partition under windows explorer since it's hidden.

Wait, to perform a fresh install do you need your own Windows 7 CD?

Is it possible to do a fresh install with the software provided by HP?

Really don't want to spend money on a OS I already have on the laptop.

I know this might sound silly, but when you clean install and windows update, don't the drivers install as well?
Which ones do you have to do manually?

generic graphics and audio will install

you need to install the wifi manually

also, i found that only after a few windows updates did the touchpad even become recognized by windows, then i updated the synaptics

before, when reinstalling OS using files from msdnaa, i had to call microsoft to get the key activated because it always said the key was used (which was true since the key was used in the computer that was being for the OS being reinstalled). glad to see #2 will eliminate this step

IIRC, all discs contain the same info; it's the activation code that ultimately decides which version/function is installed.

So when installing a fresh install, I should delete all the partitions? Or should i keep the restore or tools partition there?

I don't see how it's "lame". I think it makes good business sense: instead of making x copies of each version, you make y copies of the same disc but with different labels. Thus, you technically won't "run out" of one version because all you have to do is generate new keys.

Ok, thanks to everyone who answered before. I had to go somewhere and just got back. I tried unchecking the box. The picture (thumbnail sized now :D) that you see is after I clicked ok then reentered the window.

    I feel so stupid, lol.

I just got my Envy, but already I have some disappointment in regards to the touch pad.

Is there anyway to make a two-finger tap register as a right click? (ala Bootcamp's way of handling the right click)

Is there a way to make two-finger scrolling far more smooth and tactile then it is? I feel like there is a delay to having it activate and once it has the scrolling is minimal and I have to lift my fingers over and over to get anywhere in a document.

Also after I scroll I have to lift both fingers off the touchpad in order to deactivate the scrolling. Is there a way to make it stop scrolling if I just lift off one finger?

Any help is appreciated, even if I'm sure I am just headbutting into the deficiencies of this touch pad.

I recieved my envy 14 a few days ago and I've been in love with it. The only downside is that annoying high pitched whine. It gets worse when i plug a USB mouse in for some reason. Its extremely annoying and the only solutions i found were tampering with the bios, but the bios on this computer are so basic that none of the solutions are possible. The sound is so annoying I am on the verge of returning my laptop...Does anyone know a solution to this?

I found something that at least enables two finger scrolling.

but I haven't messed around with it too much.

it also doesn't work quite right. You have to go 1-2 like you were tapping two fingers instead of hitting both down at the same time.

it also may get triggered by your hands some as you type. I need to just leave it on here for awhile and see how it works.

it also has some two finger scrolling stuff (not sure how different it would be over the built in two finger scrolling)

    TwoFingerScroll_1_0_6.zip - two-finger-scroll - TwoFingerScroll 1.0.6 - Project Hosting on Google Code

also. it has four modes. whatever one-one is. whatever one-one is, whatever two-one is.

    and then two and three.

also set the maximum distance kinda low. that stops it from triggering when you rest your thumbs on the top edges of the touchpad.

I, too, just got my Envy a couple of hours ago. I'm experiencing similar problems with the trackpad. The larger trackpad surface is one of the main reasons I bought this laptop. I have read earlier in this thread that the Envy 14 does support two finger right-click, but for the life of me I can't find it anywhere in the trackpad settings.

    meh. doesn't stop it though...

    that's annoying.

maybe I'll just use three finger right click.

two finger scrolling with this thing is pretty nice once you put it on smooth (...til it triggers while you're typing or something. meh, turning it off again)

i hope this doesn't sound repetitive but take a look at JJB's guide here http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...hp-envy-14-owners-lounge-631.html#post6468855

why don't people try chiralmotion scrolling? i find it be far easier than any other method. just set the scrolling regions a bit wider since the envy 14 has a large trackpad.

oh yeah. I like this three finger right clicking...I'd prefer two, but well...it triggers too often when typing since the track pad is wide.

have you tried turning off the bluetooth.

    sometimes that works.

sometimes disabling one of the microphones works.

other times it doesn't work at all and you're stuck with it unless you wanna replace it with another.

it's an issue with the cpu when it goes to a low power state.

    ...that doesn't sound good.

    try taking the battery out.

powering it on and getting rid of the leftover charge.

then plug it in without the battery inside and see if it turns on. If it doesn't...well...yeah. it might be DOA.

    luxo.

dun forget to grab the swsetup folder and chuck it on an external or something.

also if you wanna keep hp quickweb in a working order you may wanna turn hidden folders on so you don't miss anything in the swsetup folder.

also also if you're getting rid of all the partitions, if you dun mind losing the 100 MB, keep the HP_Tools partition. Sure you can remake it, but the system uses that partition to go and install a new bios when it shows up

Anyone know approximately how long until a 2nd gen Envy 14 is released?

By the way, I'm new here. I've been reading this thread for a while, because I'm thinking about getting an Envy 14. I don't need it immediately, which is why I might wait for a new version depending on when it will be released.

    Thanks for the tips!

I already copied the folder so I can install drivers after wards. I have also backed it up to my windows home server so I should be able to recover that way if I have to. When I reinstall I will use a new computer name so I always should have that backup.

    next tip: Go here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...-hp-laptop-out-box-guide-2-0-windows-7-a.html

'cause well...it tells you how to backup your activation if you're gonna still use home premium.

or I guess if you're gonna move home premium to another computer or something (not sure if that'll work).

I like that program, but I never really used it with my ENVY 15, since the buttons are integrated into the touchpad and resting my finger on the button counts as a finger down. If you don't want to use the buttons at all and plan on disabling them, the program is probably the best you can do.

In the program, one plus one clicking means you have one finger down and you tap with another finger. two plus one means you have two fingers down and tap with one more finger.

    Hope this helps.

three button's also the only one that doesn't get triggered while typing at a desk or something.

also I couldn't copy those two files either when copying swsetup

*shrugs* dun worry about it. probably would get reinstalled/added anyway if you reinstalled hpquickweb

It's official, just talked to HP tech support, envy 14 is dead on arrival. Now after waiting 21 days for the laptop. I have to wait another 7 to 9 business days for the repair...coupled with the hassle to get credit for the cpu price drop..needless to say i will never buy another HP product again. Should have gotten the MBP.

Booting from a dvd is better. At first you aren't able to boot from a dvd. It would just load the files from the windows 7 install disc and then the screen would go blank. What I did was change the boot order in the bios and it worked. I was frustrated when I couldn't boot from the disc, until I realize this fix.

if it's the backup one click on action center.

go to the maintenance tab. Turn off messages about windows backup. Little stuff in blue (not the button)
