I double-checked in the BIOS and my fan is set to always on and I can't hear anything. If I put my ear up to the laptop I can barely hear the fan.

Edit: My bluetooth is off and nothing plugged into USB ports.

Would a Targus travel charge be compatible with the Envy 14? The charger tip is the correct fit, but is there a difference in charging voltage or anything that could cause it to be incompatible?

What's the max temp you guys have gotten your dual cores to? I'm running prime95 right now and have gotten them up to 58 C after 10 minutes...probably still gonna go up more though

Okay, now when bluetooth is ON (attempting to prevent whine) but USB is in,

    IT WHINES AGAIN!

    What is this nonsence?

The worst part? I don't know if your computers are whining and you can't hear it and RMA'ing for a new one will do nothing or not.

I don't know, I normally hear high frequency sounds just fine. I was doing some work with a signal generator a few weeks ago and I could hear sounds most others couldn't.

I don't know if the 450 will fix anything. Honestly, I think some people can't hear the whine. I know its possible on other machines, such as the i-7's, I read online people have it.

okay lvivkse and others convinced me to stay with an i3 and not pay an extra 50 for the 450m....i really don't want a high pitched whine. my power supply had it and i had to RMA it. new one had the same thing, but i think it's gone now.

160gb ssd w/ lojack and bcb gives me 1170 after tax; the extra 50 would put me over my 1200 budget anyway.

but i'm still worried about the clean install. for the two people who went down the list for the swsetup drivers and everything went fine, what are your configs and what method did you use to clean install? (download windows 7 disc legally, using abrbeta for geniune windows, flamenko or jpzsports's guides, online drivers, etc)
could you list your steps thoroughly?

and could we please keep track of driver-related fixes =o.

Thanks to all who helped me get my envy 14 running smoothly. I have sucessfully installed a clean version of my own windows 7 ultimate and my own key. I let windows run the updates and I ran the software drivers that i have saved.

Couple things, What software do i install to get the volume indicator in the middle of the screen when u adjust the volume? Also I am thinking about putting quickweb on. Is that easy to un-install? if not, i'll leave it off. CHEERS to all and good luck to everybodies clean installs.

btw: i5 520m, 320gb toshiba hdd, 4gb ram. runs quiet. all i hear is the fans and bluetooth off.

I got base + i5-450 and did nothing special really. Just install windows as normal; of course, deleting all the trash partitions and created my own. Then went down the driver list in Swsetup from top to bottom in alphabetical order. note: I didn't use any driver listed on the website.

The trick is finding one that doesn't completely kill your performance and usability. I get a free copy of Symantec Endpoint Protection that is a good all purpose, non intrusive, slim program. It's easy to config so it doesn't get in your way. Its cheaper than piece of crap norton and isn't as intrusive, because it is marketed toward businesses instead of consumers. Check to see if your employer or school provides it, because paying for subscriptions suck. Think of it like the dell vostros. It has all the good of the original consumer product without all the crap. Endpoint Security: Antivirus, Antispyware, Intrusion Prevention, Access Control, Network Protection | Symantec

edit: I looked up the pricing and although it is cheaper, you can only purchase it with multiple licences (min is 5 at $175 :()
oh, and I had no problems with doing a fresh install. the only thing i don't have is the on screen volume meter, which reportedly boots you out of full screen software anyway.

To everyone who is complaining or wondering about the CPU whine, this happens on a lot of other laptops. The T510 was said to have the same whine on some laptops, and it definitely is the CPU. Not all laptops have it, mine certainly doesn't, but it has to do with Intel and not HP. I can't remember the reason why, but there was an explanation and it did happen on both the i5 and the i7 (of course the T510 can't be configured with an i3)

CPU whine/humming on a laptop - AVS Forum

I saw a couple posts here about the whining going away when running more intensive applications. Can anyone test this and confirm?

BTW what temps are you guys getting for your cpu idle and max?
Idle right now mine is sub 20 C for the most part, which seems very good. I ran Prime95 for a half hour and the max temps were 62/63 which also seems quite good. Ambient temp is 72 F.

So far only 520m were reported with high pitched audible whine.
I think one 450m was reported to have a normal whine that could only be heard with your ear right on keyboard right side where the cpu is (and yet he don't have confirmation this was not a hard drive noise...).
So far there was 0 i7 or i3 reported with abnormally high whine in C4 state.
Note there's always a whine in C4 (where voltage regulation is needed) state of intel cpus, but it's supposed not to be heard unless your ear is right on the cpu. Some cpus have a kind of defect that causes the whine to be 10 time stronger than it should.
USB or bluetooth modulate the whine because they cause the motherboard/processor to regulate voltage some more or less.

For the guy that says a i7 620LM works in his, is that CPU even supported on the E14's socket?

On Intel's site it says "Sockets Supported":
    i5 450m = PGA988
    i7 620LM = BGA1288

Someone put an i7-620LM in their Envy 14? Can you link to the post? I have read (almost) every page in this thread since it was started, and I must have missed this.

Where the hell did he even get an i7-620LM from? That would be my ideal configuration.

Does anyone have experience yet with ordering the slice via the parts store? I placed my order Thursday and got 1-2 days shipping, it's midnight on Monday and it hasn't even been charged to my card with no confirmation email or anything? The sales lady told me it was going to be ARRIVING Monday. I go out of town for 2 weeks on Weds...

    Guys...
tl:dr BGA1288 = soldered PGA988 the two sockets other than that are the exact same.

The only big issue is to get your hand on a LM processor since they are soldered in existing notebooks and only engineer samples on ebay ? right ?

Btw I don't think 640LM are worth the price difference, it's only 0.133 ghz faster in both turbo and normal.
